Theater Performance Only three days left to catch the Hubbard Hall performance of “The Velocity of Autumn” by Eric Coble, directed by Hubbard Hall Executive and Artistic Director David Snider. “The Velocity of Autumn” is a hilarious and heartfelt play about what happens when life becomes too hard to handle. Alexandra, a retired painter, has been told she must move out of her house and into a retirement home. As the play begins, we find her at home in her Brooklyn brownstone, sur-
rounded by Molotov cocktails, ready to ignite them and go out in a blaze of glory rather than be taken from her home. Just as she’s about to light the place up, her estranged son Chris climbs into the second-story window: “Hi, Mom.” So begins a hilarious and harrowing comedy, which explores the roadblocks we all experience in life and asks the eternal questions “why are we here” and “who will care for us when life becomes too hard to handle?” Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. The final performance is on March 11. Tickets are 30, $15 for students aged 6-22, and $25 for seniors. For more information and tickets, visit www.hubbardhall. org/the-velocity-of-autumn or call 518-677-2495. The Girl Scouts of America is an organization that strives to instill proper moral values, character, and courage in the young women of America. Anyone who has met a member of one of the 20 troops within the Southern Washington County Girl Scouts can surely agree. Area residents have probably already been asked to purchase cookies by a scout. The girls get off to an early start, hawking their iconic cookies to friends and family starting in January and continuing on through February. Beginning in March, expect to see cookie booths pop up in Stewart’s Shops throughout Argyle, Greenwich, Cambridge and Salem. Although perhaps the most well-known aspect of Girl Scouts, selling cookies is but a fraction of what the girls do throughout the year. Lisa Pembroke, the service unit manager for southern Washington county, keeps the girls’ agenda packed at all times. Recently the girls hosted their annual Powderpuff Derby, which saw a tremendous turnout Pembroke said. This year there were over 90 cars participating in the event. A significant event the girls host is their drive to acquire new books for area hospitals. The scouts collect literature for the new-born wing of the hospitals. Brand-new parents then have the ability to bring books home with their infant and encourage reading from an early age. Each year the area scouts embark on a trip to Hidden Lake in Queensbury. If the weather cooperates the girls are able to experience snowshoeing and participate in shaping ice sculptures. In April the girls plan an event themed around Earth Day. Last year the scouts planted flowers at the Salem gazebo. This year Earth Day is on Saturday, April 22. Every year the Girl Scouts march in the Memorial Day parade. Expect to see the girls in this year’s parade on Monday, May 29. In June the area scouts hold their annual awards ceremony recognizing the efforts and accomplishments of the girls and seniors who will be graduating; the bridging ceremony, in which scouts progress to the next level of scouting, is also held at this time. Girls who are interested in joining the Girl Scouts should contact Pembroke at 518-222-4372.

St. Patrick’s Day events in the region St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner and the region is gearing up to celebrate! There will be plenty of Irish music and corned beef and cabbage throughout the week, culminating in one of the largest annual St. Patrick's parades in the area. A parade and a festival The 27th annual Hoosick Falls St. Patrick's Parade and Irish Festival has it all – marching pipe bands, Irish danc- ing and lots of Wearing of the Green! More than 20 years ago, local Irishmen Mike Conway and T.J. Carmody wanted to find a way to keep the Irish culture and history alive in the Hoosick area, and decided that a parade was the ticket. The St. Patrick’s Day parade kicks off on Saturday, March 17, at noon from Wood Park in Hoosick Falls. It will proceed down Main Street, then on to John, Church and Willard Streets before heading back down Main. More than 40 marching units and floats will surprise and delight, including The Taconic Pipe Band, The Yankee Doodle Band, The Fifes and Drums of Olde Saratoga, The Hoosick Falls Jazz Band, The St. Andrews Pipe Band and The Excelsior Drum and Bugle Corp. After the parade, the Irish Festival begins, featuring the
bands Hellcat Maggie at 1 p.m. and Kevin McKrell at 2:30 p.m. in Wood Park. The Hubbard Hall Irish Dancers from Cambridge will be at BYTE Restaurant and The Sand Bar will feature The Celtic Games. Bands, Irish food and music will be served up throughout the afternoon at the Eagle Club and the Polish Hall. For more information on the Hoosick Falls St. Patrick's Parade and Irish Festival, contact Kevin O'Malley at 518894-5035 or hoosickkid@ gmail.com. Tap your toes and sing along For those who prefer to start celebrating early, a week-long schedule of musical performances will take place throughout the region. Folk singer and songwriter Kevin McKrell and Co. will present a festive Irish evening of musical entertainment for all ages on Saturday, March 10, at 7 p.m. at Home Made Theater in Saratoga. General admission: $15. Tickets and information: 518587-4427 or homemadetheater. org. On Tuesday, March 13, at 7 p.m., Craic Agus Ceol will have everyone clapping and singing
