The talks will begin around 2 p.m. “We have a lot of artifacts in our historical society collection to illustrate the evolution,” said Wright, the society’s president. Additionally, there will be a video about Vermont maple sugaring shown throughout the day. For those who are more interested in the tastiness of Vermont’s maple products –

don’t you worry, there will be plenty of that. Downstairs, there will be maple products, desserts, coffee, cider and various other goodies for sale. Historical Society members each year make various maple desserts for sale, and there will be maple products, crafts and new syrup for sale, as well. Each year, two of the popular sugary goodies are old-fashioned sugar on snow and maple cotton candy. “I’m glad we got some fresh snow; we were wondering where we’d have to go,” Wright said. “Up to Killington I suppose.” The sweetness doesn’t stop at the taste buds, either. There will be some great prizes up for grabs throughout the day. A raffle drawing with many prizes including $100 and $50 in cash, maple syrup and maple products, craft items and gift certificates from local businesses will go on during the festival. The silent auction will include some of the event’s larger items. Bidders will go after
condominium offers in Williamsburg, Virginia; Killington ski and golf passes; a professional ski tune-up; 100 gallons of heating oil; genealogical and natural science research; lessons in billiards/ pool, spinning and photography; a basket of wine; a homemade quilt as well as other fine craft items; homemade pies; dining gift certificates and other donations from area businesses. “The silent auction is where some of the big prizes are,” Wright said. “We’ve had a lot of local businesses donate some great gifts.” While your senses of sight and taste will be overwhelmed by the delicious prospects of maple festival, so will your sense of hearing. Live acoustic music will fill the air, adding some sweet vibes. There will also be maplethemed kids’ activities for the youngest maple fanatics, including coloring and crafts, all with a seasonal theme. The Historical Society building is located on Park Avenue in Middletown Springs.

Art workshop Sunday in Fair Haven Manchester Memories On Sunday, March 18, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church there will be a handson workshop led by artist Marnie Sinclair. Sinclair is a process artist raised in the tropics with its lush flora and fauna, then living and working on Martha’s Vineyard with its pristine beaches and wildlife, and now making her home on the rugged coast of Maine. Through creative play, we will experience our connection with all things, be challenged, enlightened, and inspired to action. “Nature has always inspired my art. College students honored Winter Gala Sunday in Poultney Matthew Hadeka, a Northeastern University student from Castleton, majoring in Engineering, was recently named to the university’s dean’s list for the fall semester, which ended in December 2017. To achieve the dean’s list distinction, students must carry a full program of at least four courses, have a quality point average of 3.5 or greater out of a possible 4.0 and carry no single grade lower than a Cduring the course of their college career. Each student receives a letter of commendation and congratulation from their college dean. In addition to achieving distinction through the dean’s list, Hadeka is a member of the University Honors Program,
which offers high caliber students the chance to further hone their studies and interests, live in special interest oncampus housing, and participate in one or two honors courses each term. Invitation into the honors program is highly competitive and students must maintain a high GPA and strong commitment to campus leadership to remain a part. Douglas M. Bruce of Fair Haven, a senior majoring in computer engineering and electrical engineering at Clarkson University, received the Fred and Betsy Garry Endowed Scholarship; J. Paul Nessler ‘69 Memorial Endowed Scholarship during the 20172018 academic year.

Registration opens for summer camps The opening of registration for Hildene summer camps is a local harbinger of spring in The Shires of Vermont. Hildene camps, limited to 12 campers, are a week long, and typically fill early. All camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and campers gather first at the Lowerre Family Youth Education Building before heading outside. To give all prospective campers the opportunity to attend the camp of their choice, enrollment priority is given to children who have not previously attended a particular camp. Perennial favorites like “Nets, Buckets and Boots,” “Bug Bonanza”, “Farm Camp” and others will be returning,
and “OWLS: Outdoor Wilderness Learning and Survival” was such a success last year that it will return as well. Each summer guided by its mission: Values into Action, Hildene offers a broad spectrum of camps appropriate for children from 1st to 6th grade, exploring areas as diverse as forest, field, farm, wetland, pond and river. Campers experience a wide variety of hands-on activities that are both educational and fun in programs designed to instill a respect and appreciation for the natural world around them. Guidance comes from camp staff dedicated to fostering a child’s love of
learning and includes this summe: Hildene Director of Education, Diane Newton; Lisa Maggio, Hildene Education Assistant; Ann Hausslein, avid gardener, forager and early childhood teacher at The Little School, Weston; Jamie MaloofSchilling, environmental educator, herbalist and organic farmer from Andover; and Scott Febbie, visual arts teacher and fine artist, Londonderry. For more information or to request a brochure call Newton at 802-367-7965 or email her at newton@hildene. org. Detailed descriptions, camp schedules, fees, and printable registration forms are online at www.hildene.org.
