Genealogy 101 at Castleton Free Library Fair Haven native competes Castleton Free Library will be hosting an introduction to genealogy on Monday, March 26 at 7 p.m. This free presentation, targeting people who are curious but have not yet jumped down this rabbit hole, will provide an overview of genealogy resources and how-to advice on setting up accounts, making family trees, searching for records, and joining lineage societies. Presenter Ivy Marr, a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS), has been engaged in on-going research on her own family tree, tracing some verified branches back six generations. The program will begin with a demonstration of Ancestry. com, which is a fee-based platform, to give potential users an idea of whether or not they are ready to buy a membership. Ancestry offers free two-week trials and month-to-month subscriptions.
Marr will also review free resources, including HeritageQuest, an online collection available through the library, and FamilySearch, a genealogical organization run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The presenter will give tips on search techniques and provide opportunities for analysis of census records. She will discuss the challenges of verifying data using examples from her own searches; share sample birth, death, and marriage records; and talk about the information gleaned from DNA ancestry testing. While still considering herself an amateur genealogist, Marr warns that the process can become very addictive, citing as evidence the fact that one whole wall of her apartment was covered in sticky notes before she invested in a 2x3 foot family tree template from England. The obsession has sent her, with family mem-
bers in tow, searching for an old address along the River Clyde in Glasgow at midnight; has led her to wander through cemeteries in Brooklyn - a goose chase during which no relatives were found but she saw the wild parrots - and Queens before moving onto pour over microfiche at the NYC Municipal Archives in Manhattan and private online databases at NEHGS in Boston. Whether your goal is to prove that you are a legitimate Son or Daughter of the American Revolution, a member of the Mayflower Society, a Flagon & Trencher (colonial tavern owners) descendent, or just an ordinary person with some interesting ancestors (Great Grandma’s name means Oat Beer? The poor Brooklyn family actually came from Vermont? There was a lighthouse keeper?) – this program may get you on your way. Open to all. Questions? Call 802-468-5574.

Poultney church eyes grant Pastor Todd Eaton of the iconic Baptist church in East Poultney has good news to tell. First, the coming of Easter and its story is good news. Second, the beautiful 1805 church has been given an awesome opportunity. An organization which offers grants to active churches, The Fund for Sacred Places, has put this 210-year-old building on its potential grant list. This is quite an honor as it more often funds city churches with larger congregations and bigger outreach services to their communities. Certainly, the building, which has been lovingly cared for in the past, could still use major maintenance and repair. Certainly, it has reached out to the community over the years, housing many different groups. At present in the basement it has a bulk-buying group ideal for families looking for wise, lower cost, local staples and groceries. The potential grant, to cover much structural work and the job of preparing and painting the outside of the church, could be from $50,000$100,000. Just the prep and painting could cost $70,000. It sounds wonderful, but it comes with the promise of a great deal of work - searching, praying and giving with the help of dedicated donors who would never want to see a deteriorated building on the East Poultney green. That said, all money given by their grant must be matched. At least $50,000, ideally $100,000, must be raised by dedicated donors individuals, organizations, and former members, local and away who would not want to see this
handsome building deteriorate. If 1,000 people gave $100 or 100 people gave $1,000 each, the greatest dream goal would be reached. There is a Poultney story which is a warning; the ruined three story hulk of a vacated Congregational church stood on the corner of Bird and East Main for years, the back sanctuary open to the air and used for shop work. A family lived frugally in what remained of its entry area. Its minister and people abandoned it, going west when life became difficult in the hamlet of East Poultney. Its history forgotten, the skeleton was finally torn down. So, back to the good news of Easter. Pastor Eaton invites the community to all or some of the Easter celebration at the church. These celebrations are open to those of all faiths, even to those who are curious, wish a new experience or wish to share in the religious experience. At 6 a.m. there will be a simple sunrise service at the church. This can be a fine way to start the day. At 8 a.m. people go up the ramp or stairs into the Town Room for a hearty breakfast of local eggs, sausage, fruit, pancakes etc. It is another good time for your families, as the breakfast is free. The Easter celebration service is at 10 a.m. in the lovely second floor sanctuary which may be reached by a glider chair for those who need easier accessibility. The church needs you to be a part of this historic matching effort; if you wish to be you may contact pastor@ubcofpoultney.com.

Emergency crews are often the first responders to accidents, tragedies and more. They are there for the people in our community on their worst days. The Granville Rescue Squad is looking for mature individuals 16 and older with a drive to help others. Applicants must have a clean driver’s license. Community members interested in becoming a part of the team and those who would just like to learn about the life-saving technology the Granville Rescue Squad has should attend its open house event this Sunday, March 25. “We can talk to them about joining and the different jobs that we have,” Zinn said. “… whether they want to drive, be a patient care attendant, take and EMT class. There are plenty of jobs.” This Sunday, the squad will offer free tours, demonstrations, a pancake breakfast and other activities. The breakfast, which runs from 7 a.m. to noon, will include pancakes, sausage and
scrambled eggs. The Granville Rescue Squad has 32 volunteers and 10 paid staff. It boasts six ambulances, a fly car, an Argo and a fourwheeler. Squad members will show off life-saving equipment with demonstrations and offer various building and ambulance tours. The squad’s new Argo all-terrain vehicle and heart monitors will be on display. “We try to have one piece of all of the equipment that we have out,” Zinn said. Included with the gear will be a note explaining how much each cost the squad and what it is used for. Information about upcoming CPR and first aid classes will also be available. There is no cost to attend the breakfast or open house, but donations are accepted. Zinn said the squad’s open house is a good way for first responders to get to know the community and for the community to get to know the first responders. About 200 people attend the breakfast and open house each year. “Come see what we are about,” he said. The squad rooms, which can be reached at 518-642-1830, is located at 64 East Potter Ave. in Granville.

STRESS! 5 ways to alleviate stress Stress affects everyone at some point in their lives and does not discriminate based on gender, nationality, ethnicity, economic status, or age. The American Institute of Stress says job-related stress costs businesses millions of dollars each year due to unanticipated absences. In fact, work is the foremost source of stress for many adults. Although not all stress is bad and stress responses can motivate people to perform more effectively, repeated stress is a problem. The National Institute of Mental Health says routine stress that becomes chronic can suppress immune system functions, disrupt digestion, adversely affect sleep, and cause abnormal changes in reproductive systems. People who have chronic stress are often prone to frequent and severe viral infections, like colds and the flu. Repetitive stress may be the most difficult to recognize because it often becomes a part of daily life. Managing stress and anxiety involves finding techniques that work for each individual. While not every approach works for everyone, the following are five effective means to managing stress.
1. Exercise: The American
themselves in a relaxing place while slowly breathing in and out.
3. Take a break: Removing oneself from a stressful situation for a little while can be helpful. A brief break of 15 to 20 minutes can provide a sense of calm. 4. Cognitive-behavioral therapy: Harvard Medical School defines cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, as a process of changing unhealthy thinking in order to change emotions. Therapists will identify negative thinking patterns and help patients learn to automatically replace them with healthy or positive thoughts.
Prolonged stress can take a toll on the body. Psychological Association says research continues to confirm the benefits of exercise in regard to combatting stress. Regular exercise has long-term benefits, but even a 20-minute exercise session during a stressful time can produce an
immediate effect that lasts a few hours.
2. Deep breathing: Mindful breathing can be effective and only takes 10 minutes. Men and women battling stress can sit in a comfortable position with their eyes closed and imagine
5. Support network: Simply having someone to talk to can help tame stress. People should surround themselves with others they trust who are good listeners. These can be friends, family members or professional therapists. Talking oneself through stressful situations can provide relief. Stress is a growing problem that can adversely affect one's health in various ways. Relieving stress involves identifying the stressor and taking a proactive approach before symptoms of stress worsen.
Diet vs. Exercise Weighing in on weight loss Statistics indicate more and more men, women and children are overweight or obese. The National Institutes of Health state that more than 35 percent of adults in the United States are obese and more than 34 percent are overweight, while 17 percent of children and adolescents in the United States are obese. Obesity rates are three times as high among today's children than they were among youngsters just one generation ago. As individuals attempt to lose weight, they may wonder what is the most effective way to accomplish that objective. Some argue that the secret to weight loss is lots of exercise, while oth-
ers insist that calorie control is the key. When it comes to slimming down, some may be surprised by what the experts have to say. The Mayo Clinic advises that cutting calories through dietary changes appears to promote weight loss more effectively than physi-
cal exercise alone. According to Shawn M. Talbott, Ph.D., a nutritional biochemist and former director of the University of Utah Nutrition Clinic, weight loss is about 75 percent diet and 25 percent exercise. People generally see
the largest short-term results when they eat healthy foods and healthy portions. Poor diets can be difficult to overcome, as it takes a lot of exercise to spur dramatic weight loss, whereas a low-calorie, healthy diet can be a simple and effective means to losing weight. Nutritionists often point to a balanced diet that focuses on fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole-grain carbohydrates over fad diets or ones that require the adherence to strict guidelines that are difficult to follow for lengthy periods of time.

tain strong bones, build muscle, improve flexibility, and keep the cardiovascular system working efficiently. Exercise also releases endorphins, which can improve mental alertness and feelings of well-being. The Mayo Clinic notes that studies have shown that people who lose weight and keep it off over the long
haul are those who get regular physical activity. When it comes to losing weight, the foods a person eats play a bigger role than exercise. But it is the combination of both diet and exercise that can lead to greater overall health and sustained weight loss.

Owning pets can be beneficial to your health About 65 percent of American households have pets, and we spend nearly $35 billion dollars a year on these companion animals. (Lucky dogs.) Our pets clearly have us wrapped around their little paws, but what do we get from them in return? There are the obvious answers–companionship, unconditional love, a best friend, some slipper-fetching. But there are also a number of unseen benefits with farreaching effects: Pets are great for our health. Pets can help us to heal emotionally, physically, and mentally, but scientists are also discovering that cats and dogs can help fight disease and assist us in coping with chronic conditions. They can have a biochemical impact on their owners’ body chemistry. Numerous medical experts have provided the results of scientific studies that support this biological basis for what we’ve felt intuitively. Here are some of the ways in which pets can have a positive effect on our health.
blood of babies immediately after birth and one year later. He was looking for evidence of an allergic reaction, immunity changes, and for reactions to bacteria in the environment. If a dog lived in the home, infants were less likely to show evidence of pet allergies. They also were less likely to have eczema; and they had higher levels of some immune system chemicals–a sign of stronger immune system activation. This sounds similar to the concepts explored in the hygiene hypothesis.
1. Pets Lessen the Risk of Allergies & Asthma
This one is kind of a no-brainer: a survey by Mindlab International found that 55 percent of people were more relaxed after spending time with their pets–44 percent were also less worried about specific problems such as job security and finance. Dr David Lewis, a psychologist at Mindlab said that “Interacting with a dog is a profound and effective stress reducer. It increases feelings of contentment and relaxation.” One quarter of respondents described their dog as their best friend while one in six women said they confided their deepest thoughts only in their pets–and walking the dog was also found to be a more effective means of spending quality time with the family than even meal-
Counterintuitive, at first, but it makes perfect sense. “The old thinking was that if your family had a pet, the children were more likely to become allergic to the pet. And if you came from an allergy-prone family, pets should be avoided,” says researcher James E. Gern, MD, a pediatrician at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. But a number of new studies suggest that kids growing up in a home with “furred animals”–which can include cats and dogs, as well as farm animals–will have less risk of allergies and asthma. In his recent study, Gern analyzed the

times or holidays.
4. Cats Lower Risk of Fatal Heart Attack Researchers looked at nearly 4,500 adults and found that cat ownership was related to a 40 percent lower risk of suffering a fatal heart attack. The team speculated that having a cat may reduce stress and anxiety, and thus protect against cardiovascular disease. For example, the mere act of petting your cat can lower your blood pressure!
3. Dogs Lower Blood Pressure and Cholesterol A psychologist from Queen’s University, Belfast, said dog owners tended to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Writing in the British Journal of Health Psychology, she says that regular walks may partly explain the difference. Taking care of a dog can often leads to increases in physical activity and facilitates the development of social contacts, which may enhance both physiological and psychological human health. As well as lower blood pressure and cholesterol, dog-owners suffer fewer minor ailments and serious medical problems.
5. Pets Can Help People with Serious Illness
Some medical doctors recommend “pet prescriptions” to their patients who are alone and need companionship. That’s because physicians have discovered that a family pet can actually motivate some patients to give their best effort when dealing with serious illness such as cancer. Having a pet to care for and feed can stimulate ailing individuals to take better care of themselves.
6. Dogs Help with Weight Loss According to a story published in The New York Times, research from the University of Missouri found that people who walk dogs are more consistent about regular exercise and show more improvement in fitness than people who walk with a human companion. In the 12-week study of 54 older adults, 35 people were assigned to a walking program for five days a week, while the remaining 19 served as a control group. Among the walkers, 23 selected a friend or spouse to serve as a regular walking partner, another 12 participants took a bus daily to a local animal shelter where they were assigned a dog to walk. The researchers were surprised to find that the dog-walkers showed an impressive improvement in fitness, while the human walkers leaned towards making excuses to avoid the workout. Walking speed among the dog walkers increased by a whopping 28 percent, compared with just a 4 percent increase among the human walkers. A University of Missouri-Columbia study showed that people who did not walk regularly could lose an average of 14 pounds in one year by walking a dog 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week!

Mettowee Valley Speech Therapy Services has served the area since 1996 How we speak and how we learn is directly related to our ability to understand and communicate our wants, needs, feelings and ideas. Speech disorders were first identified and discussed in the late 1800’s but it wasn’t until the 1940’s and 50’s that the profession began to develop and work with people of all ages with a variety of communication disorders. Over the past 70 years, speech language pathologists have worked to improve the lives of children and adults with disorders related to delayed development, speech impairment, learning disabilities, physical anomalies, stuttering, voice, neurologic impairment and swallowing. Claudia H. Ellis is a licensed speech language pathologist who has operated Mettowee Valley Speech Therapy Services, PLLC in the Granville area since 1996. The office has been serving children, adolescents and adults at the Mettowee St. office since February of 2002. Services are provided through private insurance, private pay, schools and programs for children ages 3-5 with speech and language delays. The office accepts Fideliscare, Empire Plan, Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield, CDPHP, GHI/Emblem Health and Medicare. Mettowee Valley Speech Therapy Services specializes in working with children and adolescents with delayed development, speech impairment, learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorders. Therapy is individualized to meet the individual’s specific needs after a thorough assessment has been completed. Frequency of therapy is dependent upon the need of the patient. HEALTHY LIVING
Healthy habits that can have a lasting impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person's control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives. n Keep working. While many working men and women dream of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and for all, they might
want to think more about a second career than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia. While men and women may want to retire from their professions, finding second careers or volunteering close to full-time hours may improve their long-term health and quality of life.

n Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase
with age, so men and women aiming for long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. n Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. HEALTHY LIVING
Habits Continued from page 6 ic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That's an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. n Visit your physician annually if not more frequently. While many peo-
ple, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases, including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples' quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.
Did you know? Millions of people resolve to get healthier by dieting and exercising more frequently at the start of each new year. According to data from the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, 12 percent of new gym memberships are opened in January. The second week of January is one of the busiest times of year in the fitness industry. But many people who decide to exercise more at the dawn of a new year quickly lose that resolve. New Year's resolutions to diet may wane as well. In 2013, a UK food company found that of those who diet regularly, two out of five quit within the first seven days, one out of five last a month, and only 20 percent make it to the three-month mark. To make healthy resolutions last longer, people should recognize that results do not happen overnight and should not be discouraged by slow progress. In addition, diet and exercise is not a fast fix, but rather a lifestyle change. With consistent calorie control and exercise, people may see a gradual reduction in weight and other improvements to their overall health. Some may find it most effective to work with a nutritionist and a gym trainer.
