Paintings by Castleton artist Richard Weis will be featured through May 27 at the Slate Valley Museum in Granville, New York. Weis will unveil his exhibit, “Of Time and Place,” this Friday, April 6 from 7-9 p.m. at Granville’s First Friday event. The show is both globally influenced and culturally diverse in content. “All of these paintings have been generated from a particular location,” Weis said, noting wildfires and iron mines in Minnesota and sceneries Robert Weis, of Castleton, is one local artist whose work will be in Wales I as inspirations. on display at the First Friday events in Granville this Friday. Peeps on parade By Serena Kovalosky Peeps are back! The sugar-coated marshmallow chicks and bunnies have once again taken over the Poultney Public Library for the sixth annual Peeps Diorama Contest. The colorful, squishy treats have been a staple in children’s Easter baskets since the early 1900s. Since then they have become a national icon – and not just for eating. Peeps have found their way into the hands of artists and since 2004 have populated miniature dioramas in competitions around the country. An estimated one-third of all Peeps sold are used in art and crafts. The Poultney Library has been hosting its own annual Peeps Diorama Contest for the past six

traditional landscape painter sees it,” he said. “What I try to do is not do a reproduction, but use composition and colors … to evoke some sense that I felt at a certain place.” Sometimes Weis will hang on to the memory of a landscape and wait for “different types of feelings to gel,” before putting the abstract image to canvas. Weis, a former Green Mountain College professor, has a studio in Poultney. Krista Rupe, the museum’s executive director, invited Weis to display his work at the April First Friday because she has a love for his work. “I grew up loving his modern, abstract pieces,” Rupe

Peeps Continued from front page years. This year’s theme is “Great Peeps in Television.” The Poultney contest is open to individuals and groups of all ages. For this year, participants were asked to make a diorama depicting a scene from one of their favorite television shows, current or classic. The only catch is that all characters must be created using marshmallow Peeps. Eighteen Peeps-inspired dioramas are currently on display at the library, hoping for the chance to win the coveted Golden Peep Award. “We received a wide range of entries,” said director Rebecca Cook. “People put a lot of energy into their creations. Some are pretty clever.” In the kids’ division, “Peeps Patrol” features Peeps instead of pups, inspired by “PAW Patrol.” In the adult category, Peeps bunnies offer their Tool Time tips to an audience of sugary chicks in “Peeps Improvement” (“Home Improvement”). There’s even a Peeps version of “Friends.” Anyone who has ever come in contact with Peeps knows the creative process can be quite sticky. Cook has participated in past contests and shared the secret to working with Peeps:
Seniors Continued from front page and at 1 p.m. guest speaker Joe Carroll, the host of WCAX TV’s popular show “Super Seniors,” will share some of his experiences visiting and recording some of Vermont’s most interesting older adults. Throughout the day there will be a video presentation: “20 Years of Service to the Community,” a 20 Question Trivia Contest - winner receives a Vermont Country Store Basket valued at $100 and a 20 Item Silent Auction with valuable items and gift certificates donated by local businesses and restaurants. The organization traces its roots to 1995 when a group of seniors, led by Dr. Holman Jordan and Nancy Doran, met to assess the needs of older adults in the western Rutland County area. In 1997 the first by-laws of the organization were created and in 1998, they held the first meeting of the Castleton Community Seniors Board of

The Doctor Who-themed peep diorama is on display at the library. “Open up the package ahead of time and let them get stale,” she advised. Voting for the 2018 Peeps Diorama Contest is open to everyone and will continue through Saturday, April 7. Ballots can be cast at the library or online by visiting the library’s Facebook page. Votes may be placed for one entry in each category: Children (C), Staff (S), and Adult (A). Online voters simply comment “vote” on the diorama they wish to vote for. “We’ll keep the voting open for people who come to the library for our Saturday night movie,” Cook said. Winners will be announced
on Facebook and at the library. Next year’s contest theme has already been determined. “We’re going with a local theme for 2019,” Cook said. “It’ll be: Great Peeps in Poultney.” Cook suggests that now is the time for potential participants to begin stocking up on their Peeps. “They’re on sale and they’ll be just right to work with for next year,” she said. For more information on the Peeps Diorama Contest, contact the library at 802-287-5556 or visit their Facebook page. The Poultney Public Library is located at 205 Main St., Poultney, Vermont.
Directors. Through the generosity of the Alma Gibbs Donchian Foundation, the organization was able to establish a permanent home at the Old Homestead on Main Street. The Castleton Community Seniors meal program and Elderly and Disabled Transportation program were initiated in 1998. Today more than 1,200 meals are served in the center’s dining room, and more than 3,200 rides are given annually for essential travel to doctor’s appointments, physical therapy, adult day care, senior meals and essential food shopping for older adults in western Rutland County. The center’s Wellness Program was launched in 2004 and expanded in 2009 with the renovation of the adjacent barn into a multi-purpose Wellness Center. Today there are 10 different fitness classes for older adults to choose from each week. The vision of the founding members, written in 1998, is a true reflection of the Community Center today. It reads: “The Castleton Community Center should be a caring, giving place for young
and old alike. It should be a place where people can go to learn, feel better about themselves and others, have fun, spend an evening, an afternoon or morning. It should be a place to meet friends and make new friends; a place to share and enjoy with others; a place to escape isolation and winter blues. It should be a place where there is always something happening and usually more than one thing at a time. It is a lively, active, joyful place. It is a place where you and your family can do things that you might not be able to do in your own homes. It should be a place to celebrate life and living ---with others.” From grassroots to fullfledged 501c3 with more than 500 members, the Castleton Community Seniors have much to celebrate. Everyone is invited to join in the celebration of 20 years of “Seniors Serving the Community” at an Open House this Friday. For information or luncheon reservations call 802-468-3093 or e-mail homested@shoreham.net.

Local university students receive scholarship Free movie night Saturday
Two local Castleton University students were recently awarded Academic Recognition Scholarships. These scholarships are given to first-year students who have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and are nominated by their First Year Seminar professor. Nicholas Hooker and Eric Ray, both of Castleton, will
receive an annual scholarship and enrollment in Honors courses during their sophomore year. They will also have the option to live in Honors housing and will be eligible to serve on the Honors Council. Castleton University is small enough to be a community where every student matters, yet offers more than 75 pro-
grams of study for undergraduate and graduate students, 28 varsity sports and over 50 clubs and organizations. The university stresses experiential learning through internships, community service and research opportunities provided by more than 400 community partnerships.
“Barn Art” celebrates rural Vermont icons Artists in Vermont clearly have an affinity with barns. The many barns that dot the Vermont landscape are a treasured subject matter that provide inspiration to artists, as well as reminders of their purpose and history. The Compass Music and Arts Center’s new exhibit, “Barn Art,” is a collection of works from 31 different artists in celebration of these functional, yet stunning, architectural gems. The exhibit runs from April 6 through June 16, with an opening reception on Friday, April 6, from 5-7 p.m. The different ways in which these 31 artists see, portray and feel about barns are inspirations in themselves. The response, quality and variety of work submitted by artists for this juried exhibit was beyond all expectations. Watercolorists C. Asheley Kapelewski and Barbara A. Brosnan focus on the not-soobvious “tenants” of a barn, like the birds who perch on its rafters, or the back shed often used by cats as a shelter. Conversely, Jeanne Lamoureux-Wood’s mixedmedia piece reflects her idea that barns are an “integral part of a highly functional, working unit” and by incorporating photographs of her farm animals confirms that, to her, the “true essence of a barn is derived from its inhabitants, the animals.” Other work in the exhibit offers an artistic record of barns that sadly no longer exist. Leonard Duffy calls them “icons of time and place” and said that “painting barns, like painting flowers, is an attempt to capture an ephemeral moment for future generations.” Daniel Doyle’s photograph profoundly shares the continual loss of Vermont’s dairy history. Peg Lawrence also shares a similar perspective. Her work titled “The Last Farm” is her
response to the fact that “we are losing our lovely old barns,” not just in Vermont but nationwide, due, to a large extent, to urban sprawl. Some artists, like Hope Wurmfeld, used materials from old barns, in the form of a window, as the “canvas” for photographs. Lori Pietropaolis, on the other hand, took a completely different, more abstract approach. Driving through rural areas, images of farms and homesteads become abstract designs in glass with “the weathered but sturdy barn, peeling red paint revealing the silvering wood” beneath, she said. Three major resident Vermont artists, Susan Bull Riley, Denise Letendre and Stephanie Stouffer, were invited to jury the exhibit and select winners. They all agreed that, although very rewarding, it was a not an easy task identifying the most exceptional pieces from a host of strong entries. Edna Sutton, managing partner for the Compass Music and Arts Center, was pleased the “Barn Art” exhibit attracted the interest of so many talented Vermont artists and acknowledges the generous support of the jurors. “We are so grateful to each of the jurors,” she said. “We know and value each of them as talented artists and now, as jurors, we can appreciate further the unique perspective, skill, knowledge, insight and thoughtfulness they brought, as they considered each of the submissions.” According to juror Stephanie Stouffer, the “Barn Art” exhibit will offer a broad appeal: “It will surely be a popular exhibit, as the subject matter is so integral to our life in Vermont.” Other exhibiting artists include: Amanda Amend, Glen Bartolomeo, Terry Boyle, Gayl M. Braisted, Carol Calhoun, Jean Cannon, Susannah Colby,

Twig Remembers John Heald, Jr. Somewhere Restaurant back in the 1970’s. John’s mother, Rita, was comanaging the business with Fred Smith. John and his sister, Faith, moved up from Connecticut to be closer to their mother. I got to know John better at Williams’ Hardware when he opened his auto garage in Poultney - he was a regular for nuts, bolts and accessories for his work. We’d talk about his Harley and big chatter before and after his annual trip to the Loudon, New Hampshire Speedway for the big race. Let me tell you about John the mechanic. He had this knack for fixing the hard stuff that nobody else wanted to do. If you asked him if he needed money down, he would say “No, just a handshake.” When the job was done, you just couldn’t believe how fair his price was. When John was Vice Commander for State American Legion, he started raising money for a special
room at the Vets Home where I live now. He said once the word was out, guys with a lot of money were writing checks for thousands of dollars-he raised enough money to renovate the guest room like a 5-Star quality hotel room. In late November, I was taking a nap and in walks John. He had driven down (to VVH). I said “Motorcycle?” He answered “No, I couldn’t” and told me that the cancer he had for 10 years had finally gotten into his bone marrow, but he was hopin’ to get stronger. He came down to take a look at the completed project-a guest room for families that travel a distance can stay overnight in. We had a great visit for about 45 minutes. I could tell that he was hurting from the ride. God bless Legionnaire John Heald, the originator of his Post 39, Poultney’s Motorcycle Riders, who raised monies for many organizations, and especially this Vermont Veterans’ Home. You get what I mean… “Twig Remembers”

New anthology of Vermont poetry released A new anthology of 111 contemporary poems by 67 Vermont poets, “Birchsong: Poetry Centered in Vermont, vol. II,” has been published by The Blueline Press in East Dorset. A launch party will be held at the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, Vermont, on Saturday, April 14, beginning at 2 p.m., and many of the poets featured in the book will be reading their work. Illustrated by artist Mary Schwartz, also from East Dorset, the book is a rich collection of poetry reflecting the Vermont landscape, its people
and its culture. In the six years since the first Birchsong volume, which appeared in 2012 following tropical storm Irene in 2011, there have been changes to the Vermont countryside and in the way of life, yet the constants that endure throughout the cycle of years and seasons will be recognized by all who revere the natural world. “The poets represented in this volume [one] are all attuned to nature and its meanings for our lives. The variety of forms, tone, perspective, and subjects weave a fascinating tapestry,” wrote Anthony O.
Tyler, former editor of Blueline. The second volume is edited by Northshire Poets Alice Wolf Gilborn, Carol Cone, David Mook, Marcia Angermann, Peter Bradley and Monica Stillman. The Blueline Press, licensed in Vermont, was established by Gilborn mainly as a reprint press, though it has published original works on occasion, including the first Birchsong. For more information, visit Northshire Bookstore at northshire.com or email thebluelinepressvt16@gmail.com.

‘Mystery in the Mountains’ interactive dinner party April 14 Get away with murder at the first annual Mud Season Mystery on April 14. The interactive dinner party begins on Saturday, April 14 at 6:30 pm. Guests are invited to dress in Gilded Age or Imperial finery as they follow a cast of actors through the 1902 Wilburton mansion to solve a mystery inspired by real events from Manchester’s history. Prizes will be awarded for best sleuthing and most creative costume. Tickets to the Mystery Dinner Party are $70, with dis-
counts for groups of 8 or more. $5 of each ticket will be donated to the Manchester Historical Society. This event is part of Vermont Arts 2018, a project of the Vermont Arts Council. This year’s mystery saga, A Vodka Shot in The Dark, is inspired by the historic unsolved murder of Manchester’s civic leader, George Orvis, owner of the Equinox Hotel, whose body was discovered in the Equinox Pond in 1917. The newspapers claimed it was a swimming accident. But was it??
Family Innkeeper and New York City playwright Tajlei Levis uses the rich history of the Wilburton and Manchester events as inspiration for each year’s original mystery; however, the complex plots are creative invention. Levis explains, “these mysteries are interactive romantic comedies, with local history, political satire and songs from the era.” Guests mingle and dine with the cast as they work together to figure out who-dunnit and why. The cast includes New York

Creative costumes are encouraged: Gilded Era gowns, suffragette sashes, Russian fur hats. The Wilburton Inn is a historic 1902 Tudor mansion high on a hill – a perfect setting for an Agatha Christie mystery or a real game of Clue. The tradition of Wilburton mystery events was begun by founding innkeeper Georgette Levis, sister of Tony-award winning
playwright Wendy Wasserstein, and is continued by Georgette’s eldest daughter Tajlei Levis. The Wilburton Inn is located at 257 Wilburton Drive, off River Road, in Manchester Village, Vermont. Call to reserve: 802-362-2500. Lodging packages are available.
