Hutchinson’s process is inspired by the very act of drawing and the challenge of translating a three-dimensional object from life onto a flat, twodimensional surface. A jig-saw puzzle effect is revealed with the added inclusion of cut-outs and tiered layering of the paper or wood. The artist considers the use of her materials as relative to alchemy. Each piece, no matter the subject, is an exploration of cause and effect, investigating the medium and act of creation. Her materials direct and translate an empirical narrative that are embedded with color inspired from her daily surroundings. The opening reception will feature local food products and is free and open to the public. “Dimensions of Space” will be on display in the center’s Great Hall from April 15 to May 24. Information: 518-854-7053. Salem Courthouse Community Center, 58 E. Broadway, Salem, N.Y.

6 • The FREEPRESS • Friday, April 20, 2018 of 20 large-format artworks by Douglas Gayeton that tell the story of Mals, Italy, long known as the breadbasket of the Tyrol. Recently the tiny town of Mals became known for preserving and protecting its food heritage. “A Precautionary Tale” tells how that was accomplished, introducing an unlikely group of activists and a forward-thinking mayor who came together to ban pesticides in Mals by a referendum vote— making it the first place on Earth to accomplish such a feat, and a model for other towns and regions to follow. AckermanLeist’s program and exhibit form a portion of the multimedia approach to telling the story of Mals all over the U.S. and parts of Europe. The program is free, and the exhibit runs through May 9. The Pawlet Public Library is located at 141 School St. in Pawlet, Vt.
