Historical Society brings towns together The Fair Haven Historical Society strives to record and preserve information and memories of the past. The society tries to bring people together who are interested in history and documenting it for future generations. Each January officers are elected to the board. The length of the term staggers to ensure that every board is not completely new. The current president is Lorraine Brown; immediate past president is Mary McNeil; vice president is Art Sabin; secretary is Ceil Hunt and treasurer is Carol Crawley. In addition to the offices there are eight other board members. The society has an exten-
sive collection of past newspapers, photos, scrapbooks of events and research projects. At this time there is not public space to allow these to be viewed without a board member present. Times can be set up for research with any board member. The historian, Dani Roberts, can help with genealogical and other research. The office is located in the first room on the left as you walk into the Municipal Building. The bulletin board in the hall has a list of events, sponsors and membership forms, having the historical society’s office located so close to the town offices gives easy access to town records.

Officials: Snowmobile season ended April 15 Green Mountain National Forest officials want to remind the public that snowmobile season ended in the GMNF this past Sunday, April 15. Weather permitting, snowmobile use is allowed on designated trails within the GMNF for four months beginning on December 16. “This has been a wonderful season for snowmobile enthusiasts. Trail conditions throughout the season have been great and use of the trail system has been heavy,” said John Sinclair, Forest Supervisor for the Green Mountain and Finger Lakes
National Forests. Heavy snow and below freezing conditions provided solid snow pack in the higher elevations this season. The GMNF and Vermont Association of Snow Travelers work together to maintain 472 miles of national forest system trails that are part of the statewide snowmobile trail system. VAST is one of the only snowmobile associations in the United States that has a cooperative partnership agreement with the U.S. Forest Service. All of these GMNF trails allow for mixed uses, people are able to snow-
shoe, hike, cross-country ski, as well as snowmobile. With snowmobile season ending, access to forest roads for wheeled highway vehicle traffic typically opens up on May 15 dependent on weather and road conditions. Given the significant amount of snow in the higher elevations this year, it is very likely spring mud season will extend later into May and early June delaying the opening of some forest roads. Thus, forest users should plan accordingly and check with their local ranger station for up-to-date road information.
‘Spring Wellness Wednesday’ set for April 25 Stone Valley Community Market is pleased to introduce Jess Garrett as its Store Manager. A resident of Fair Haven, Garrett grew up on a farm in central New York. She has cultivated vegetables and fowl, trained horses, and climbed her first mountain in the Adirondacks at age 11 on horseback. Garrett is a graduate of Green Mountain Stone College where she studied Anthropology, Environmental Studies, and History, focusing on sustainable living, alternative energy, and policy. While working on energy conservation projects with affordable housing organizations statewide in Vermont, she had her first child who has special needs. This shifted her focus to the health and wellness realm of sustainability. Garrett studied with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and became a certi-
Valley Community Market fied health and wellness coach in 2015. Now Garrett is bringing new energy to the co-op on Main Street in Poultney as she helps further the mission to offer more local products, look for new ways to engage in the surrounding community, and provide healthy items at affordable prices. Exciting new projects are in progress, including a collective effort by member volunteers, staff, and board members to give the store a new paint job and
other updates in celebration of the building’s 100th birthday this year. The space has been a grocery or food retail establishment in Poultney for the better part of its lifespan. Join Garrett and staff member Sophia on Wednesday, April 25 for Spring Wellness Wednesday, where they will share their favorite ways to nourish the body in the midst of the seasonal transition. This free event will be offered twice that day, first from 11 a.m. to noon and again from 5-6 p.m. Stop in at 216 Main St. in Poultney, or give the co-op a call at 802-287-4550 if you’d like to learn more. Every Wednesday is Wellness Wednesday when you’re a member, with 10 percent off select health and wellness products. Stone Valley Community Market is co-operatively owned by its members and is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors. Non-members are always welcome to shop.

School Board News
Quarry Valley school seeks more representation By Linda Smith My name is Linda Smith and I am one of three representatives from Poultney to the Quarry Valley Unified Union School Board consisting of school board members from Proctor, West Rutland and Poultney. The chair of the board is Jim Oberg from Poultney and vice chair Lisa Miser from Proctor. I am the clerk. There are three representatives to the Supervisory Union one from Poultney, one from Proctor and one from West Rutland. There are approximately 1,000 students from our district. Rutland Town School also has three representatives with approximately 333 students and Wells Spring District, consisting of Wells and Middletown, has three representatives with approximately 120 students in their district and Ira has one representative with approximately 40 students. As you can see QV has the most students and the least representation. We pay 57 percent of the child count for the supervisory union. A letter was generated from QV and given to the
supervisory union at their last meeting to increase their representation to six members. The supervisory union will consider it as Rutland Town, Wells Spring and Ira wish to take it to their perspective boards. More on this next time. Something to also keep in mind Rutland Central SU and Rutland Southwest SU will be together as of July 1, as the Greater Rutland County Supervisory Union. However, many issues in the new supervisory union (GRCSU) are being decided for the upcoming year. Most of the administrators as well as the superintendent come from Rutland Central Supervisory Union. QV has also received information from their lawyer regarding how to leave the supervisory union. Some of the topics of concern are how to bring together the best of all districts in technology and curriculum. Another one was where to have the supervisory union. At the last supervisory union meeting there was a discussion regarding moving the supervisory union to a different
place other than Rutland City. The supervisory union pays $65,000 per year and Rutland Southwest Supervisory Union paid $33,000. There had been some discussion at QV to try and perhaps use a town that was part of the supervisory union or use space in schools. The supervisory union passed a motion, with a vote of 6-4, to keep the supervisory union in Rutland City and to keep the lease until 2023. Ask your representatives who voted yes and who voted no. These are just a few of the many areas of concern that are being discussed. There are worries about being absorbed rather than bringing the best of both together. The next supervisory union meeting is scheduled at West Rutland on Wednesday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. They are scheduled for the fourth Wednesday of the month. Come if you can. Quarry Valley’s meeting was scheduled for April 12 at 6:30 p.m. in West Rutland. We rotate schools.

Brandon Music presents the Michele Fay Band April 21 Catch the Michele Fay Band, featuring original and Americana music, at Brandon Music on April 21. This energetic and unpretentious group brings forth a comfortable groove of folk, swing, and bluegrass-influenced songs, woven seamlessly together. Fay’s heartfelt lyrics are central to the ensemble, as she sings with a crystal clear, authentic voice. The Rutland Herald called her voice “smooth and entrancing” and says “While the band’s playing is top-notch, there’s a reason it’s called the Michele Fay Band, and that’s Michele’s voice.” Fay’s three band musicians are a perfect match for her talent as a singer-songwriter, and they add to the charm and sincerity of these songs without detracting from their earnest messages. Kalev Freeman, on fiddle, brings forth a light-hearted, lilting sound. Michael Santosusso, on upright bass, (Smokin’ Grass, Big Spike, Hot Pickin’ Party) adds dynamic beat and perfectly matched harmonies and Fay’s husband, Tim Price, contributes accomplished, melodic instrumentals on mandolin and guitar.
“There is something so reassuring about this kind of music… these tunes are Grand Ole Opry worthy. They make me think of the kind of songs country folks would love to dance to on a saw-dusted wooden floor,” says Kimmy Sophia Brown of The Noise-Boston.com. The band’s growing musicianship is increasingly being well received throughout the region as it continues to gather its well-deserved recognition. “Michele is now recognized as a performer who knows how to write strong songs and deliver them entertainingly.” (Art Edelstein, Rutland Herald) Concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Concert tickets are $20. A preconcert dinner is available for $25. Reservations are required for dinner and recommended for the show. Venue is BYOB. Call 802-247-4295 or e-mail info@brandon-music.net for reservations or for more information. Brandon Music is located at 62 Country Club Rd. Brandon, Vermont. Visit www.brandonmusic.net for additional details. This event is a part of Vermont Arts 2018, celebrating arts in Vermont.

Coffee house-style event April 20 The Pember Library and Museum will host its annual ‘60’s “Java & Jive” Coffee House Fundraiser Friday, April 20 from 7-9 p.m. “We are again turning the clock back 50 years to the atmosphere of a 1960’s coffee house with open call for musicians, singers, poets, writers and stand-ups to make their voices heard, at our open mic,” said Pember Board President, Mary King. Added King: “It’s a popular annual event that everyone looks forward to. The bad winter gave us a late start this year, so we’re pulling out all
