Food heritage highlights Earth Day event Pawlet Public Library hosting free event - and art exhibit In honor of Earth Day, the Pawlet Public Library is hosting an author talk and pop-up art show inspired by the book: “A Precautionary Tale: How One Small Town Banned Pesticides, Preserved Its Food Heritage, and Inspired a Movement.” The talk and art opening will take place on Sunday, April 22, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Pawlet author, farmer and college professor Philip Ackerman-Leist will speak about his book which, along with the accompanying exhibition of 20 large-format artworks by Douglas Gayeton, tells the story of Mals, Italy, long known as the breadbasket of the Tyrol. The tiny town of Mals recently became known for preserving and protecting its food heritage. “A Precautionary Tale” tells how it was accomplished, introducing an unlikely

pesticides in Mals by a referendum vote—making it the first place on Earth

to accomplish such a feat, and a model for other towns and regions to follow. With a history as rich as its soils, Mals and the Vinschgau Valley once supplied the Vatican and the British Royal Family with its exceptional grains. The cutthroat competition of the international grain market eventually led to a plummeting of grain production in the area. A few seed-savers and stubborn farmers held onto a handful of seeds and fields dedicated to the valley’s traditional diet, saving the seeds in their basements to preserve the genetic record of crops that had grown there for thousands of years. Ackerman-Leist offers that seed-savers don’t think in terms of supposed instant fixes offered by pesticides. They think from the vantage point of years, generations, and even millennia—in the past and for the future. The program is free, and the art exhibit runs through May 9. The Pawlet Public Library is located at 141 School St. in Pawlet, Vt. For more information, visit pawletpubliclibrary. wordpress.com or call 802-325-3123.
