Got drugs? The best thing to do with unused medications is to get them out of medicine cabinets and keep them off the streets, said Fair Haven Police Chief Bill Humphries. “If they fall into the wrong hands, it can be dangerous,” Humphries said. “They can be abused, sold…” That’s why the Fair Haven Police Department and other agencies across the U.S. are hosting a drug take-back event this Saturday. Prescription drug abuse has grown in the region in recent years. Residents in the Lakes Region and beyond are urged to gather any unused or unneeded pills and turn them in to law enforcement officials. “Anyone is welcome to come here; they don’t have to live in Fair Haven,” Humphries said. Saturday’s collections are part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Drug Take Back Day. The DEA will retrieve the drugs from agencies from around the country, weigh them and destroy them. Last year, Humphries said his office in Fair Haven collected 20 pounds of prescription, over-the-counter and pet medications on National Drug Take Back Day. Nationally, agencies collected and destroyed 912,305 pounds of drugs.

National Day of Prayer event Thursday In observance of the National Day of Prayer, there will be an event held next to the Town Offices on Main Street in Poultney, Vermont on Thursday, May 3 at 9 a.m. Prayer will be for the nation, state, community, military and more. All are invited to attend.

Getting ready for Green Up Day By Serena Kovalosky Every year on the first Saturday in May, residents of Vermont come together to clean up their communities. The 48th annual Vermont Green Up Day will be held on Saturday, May 5. Vermonters will be out along roadsides

and public spaces with brightly colored garbage bags to pick up litter throughout the Green Mountain State Community members from all Vermont towns are encouraged to join in and help. Free coffee, lunch and trash bags are given to par-

ticipants at some of the locations. In Benson, bags are available in the two stores, the town office and the transfer station. Bags left on the side of the road will be picked up by the town crew. Contact

Drugs Continued from front page “We would like to beat last year’s weight, but the ultimate goal is to get them off the streets,” Humphries said. Medications that are turned in range from high blood pressure pills to opioids. Drugs are turned in when people are simply cleaning out their cupboards or when a family member passes on. Many leftover pills even result from a person feeling better. “It’s pretty common. People will get a prescription for something, start to feel better and only take 10 of 15 pills,” Humphries said. Fair Haven’s drug collection doesn’t stop with the National Take Back Day. There’s a collection box year-round at the sta-

tion, located at 3 North Park Place. “The National Take-back Day is really just a reminder,” Humphries said. Any law enforcement agency, he said, whether they have a public collection box or not, will collect unused meds and destroy them. Humphries stressed the environmental benefits of turning extra drugs in to authorities. “A lot of people flush them … then they end up in our water and sewer systems,” he said. Any amount of prescription pills can be dropped off, from a bottle to just a few pills. “Two pills are better than nothing,” Humphries said. Local agencies do not accept liquid medications, but officials will advise how to dispose of them properly.

Legion to host comedian A comedy show featuring well-known comedian Kevin Downey Jr. will be held on Saturday, April 28 Fair Haven’s American Legion Post 49 beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and are available at the post daily, after 1:30 p.m. Downey has headlined clubs everywhere in the US, and can be heard regularly on The Bob and Tom Show, as well as Sirius and XM Satellite radio. He is a proud member of Armed Forces Entertainment and travels the world performing for the troops. Some of the bases he has been to include Pearl Harbor, Guam, RoiNamur, Kwajalein Atoll, Singapore and Diego Garcia. Downey has also appeared on Comedy Central, What Not to Wear and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. He appears at the Tropicana’s Comedy Stop in Las Vegas at least four times a year. He truly appreciates his ever-growing fan base. Downey authors a column entitled, Drinking on $11 a Night, which is featured in Bachelor Pad Magazine and GC magazine. He was one of 30 acts to advance straight to the Quarter Finals in New York, Radio City Music Hall, without performing in Las Vegas on Season 8 of America’s Got Talent. He did not receive enough votes to be sent to the semi-finals, eliminating him from the competition. Downey is edgy, unique and unlike most comedians you see – no props, no guitar and yet somehow funny anyway. Fair Haven American Legion Post 49 is located at 72 South Main St., Fair Haven. Prevention Month

To report suspected child abuse or neglect call

800-649-5285 This hotline is open 24/7 Caller can remain anonymous.

Child abuse can be hard to distinguish, but certain visual clues or changes in behavior may indicate there is a problem. The Child Abuse Prevention Center and other organizations offer these signs of child abuse or neglect: • There may be visible signs of injury, including bruises or burns. • Abused children may appear scared or anxious. They may also seem withdrawn or depressed. However, abused children also may act like nothing is wrong or become “class clowns” in an attempt to avoid unpleasant feelings. • Some abused kids may fear going home or to places where they may be abused. • Changes in school performance may indicate a problem. Some children will fall behind on work or have difficulty concentrating. Others may do especially well on tests or be obsessive about getting good grades for fear of punishment. • Abused and neglected children may suffer from a lack of personal care or hygiene. Clothing may not be appropriate for the weather or appear dirty. • Abused kids could have sleep disturbances that cause them to appear tired. • Behaviors such as bed-wetting, thumb-sucking or other habits of early childhood may be brought on by abuse. Some children may have memory problems or stop speaking. • Children who are abused may balk at normal, appropriate touch. They may not be able to distinguish between good and bad touch. • Risk-taking behavior may be present in abused children. The youngsters may be testing their minds and bodies to extremes or looking for another form of escapism. • Children who have been sexually abused may exhibit overly sexualized behavior or use explicit sexual language. Brass trio to perform in area schools April 30 The Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s “Fanfare” Brass Trio will present performances at three Rutland County schools on Monday, April 30. These performances are made possible by Stewart’s Shops. The schedule is as follows: Lothrop School (Pittsford) at 8:45 a.m.’ Clarendon Elementary School at 10:15 a.m.; and Poultney Elementary School at 1:30 p.m. Fanfare members Glendon Ingalls, trumpet; Ron Wold, French horn; and Bear Irwin, trombone, play a variety of musical styles and demonstrate how the instruments produce their

sounds and how each one has changed since its beginnings. These performances are part of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s statewide SymphonyKids education program, which reached more than 22,000 school children last year with 257 presentations serving 139 schools in 111 different towns. The VSO’s traveling ensembles visit all corners of the state as part of an outreach program known as the Lois H. McClure “Musicians-in-theSchools” Program. These lively concerts are met with overwhelming enthusiasm, as the musical ambassadors spread

the word that classical music can be fun. The Vermont Symphony Orchestra is the only professional statewide orchestra providing live musical experiences for listeners in Vermont. It is a statesupported non-profit institution founded in 1935 and exists for the purpose of fostering and encouraging the appreciation of music in all its various forms, with emphasis on orchestral, choral and chamber music. If you would like more information or would like to schedule an interview, contact Eleanor Long at 802-864-5741 ext. 14 or eleanor@vso.org.

Castleton Community Center turns 20 By Matthew Saari The Castleton Community Center celebrated its 20th anniversary on Friday, April 6. For two decades, the center has been providing services for area residents young and old. Whether it is nutrition, health, fitness, educational or recreational, seniors over 60 can find it all at the Castleton Community Center. Leading the itinerary – and new this year – is a drawing course, to be held on Thursday, May 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. Prospective artists will bring in something – anything – to draw, whether it be a teapot, shell, branch, leaf or rock. “What you will experience is a beginning exercise to loosen and relax your mind-body connection – to reach and awaken your muse,” the center’s newsletter reads. Returning this year are the community center’s “Great Courses,” which are college-level courses that focus on a wide variety of subject matter. Last the focus was on different cultures found throughout the world as well as economics. This year, courses will focus on the indigenous people of North America and genealogy. The first course, Native Peoples of North America, will be held on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3 p.m. while the second, Discovering Your Roots: An

The Castleton Community Center. Introduction to Genealogy on Thursdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The center also offers a very exhaustive health and wellness program, which is geared towards seniors. Each day of the week offers a different course with a different focus. Dance for Health, Bone Builders, Better Balance and several levels of Tai Chi are just a sampling of the courses offered at the Castleton Community

Center. “We have a whole group – we call them young adults. They’re looking for activities that are more active,” said director Jo Ann Riley. The center also offers lunch for seniors Monday through Wednesday. Each meal is donation-based with a suggested contribution of four dollars and five dollars for non-seniors. If you plan on attending please secure a reserva-

tion with the center by 10 a.m. the day prior. For Monday’s meal the deadline is 10 a.m. Friday. The reason for the deadline is so center staff can obtain an accurate headcount and freshly prepare enough food. The center also maintains a transportation program which provides senior citizens a ride to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store and other necessary locales they may otherwise be unable to reach. More than 5,000 rides are provided annually. Rides are available, free-ofcharge, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Last but certainly not least, the Castleton Community Center hosts a bevy of intellectually stimulating activities throughout the week such as Mahjong, Dominos, Bridge and more. Some events are held twice a week while others are held bi-monthly. “They have been very popular with seniors – it keeps them mentally sharp,” Riley said. The Castleton Community Center is located at 2108 Main St., Castleton. For more information about the numerous programs the community center offers contact them at 802-468-3093 or by email at homested@shoreham.net. You can also visit their website, www.castletoncsi.org to view their monthly calendar.

A place for the 'Young at Heart' in Poultney By Krystle S. Morey Young at Heart Senior Center in Poultney has many activities and services to entice area seniors to eat well, exercise and continue to learn. There’s fun to be had both at the center and during trips away from the center. This year, the center is looking to add more day outings, said site director Kathy Hutson. In the past, seniors from New York and Vermont have traveled to places such as Burlington to shop, the Vermont Country Store and the Saratoga Casino. And, Hutson said, the center is always open to suggestions of locations for future trips. “We are looking forward to doing more day trips, once the weather breaks,” she said. The center also has a pair of longer trips planned for this summer. One trip will take senior travelers to New Orleans and Biloxi, Mississippi, for 11 days and 10 nights in October. That trip costs $889 per person, double occupancy. More information can be obtained at grouptrips.com. “It’s going to be great,” Hutson said, noting the adults-only trip will feature a variety of activities, including stays at casinos in “The Big Easy.” The other trip, to the Canadian Island of Coudres, is set for June. The six-day, five-night trip is already booked, Hutson said. It’s $639 per person, double occupancy. “They are very reasonable,” she said. “They include most of your meals, accommodations, transportation and access to whatever the tours are.” The senior center also has a lot to offer in-house. It serves soup and coffee

The Young at Heart Senior Center in Poultney. starting at 11:15 a.m. and lunch at noon Tuesday through Friday each week. Meals include roasted pork, macaroni and cheese, bacon and vegetable quiche and more. Suggested donations for meals is $3.50 for seniors 60+ and $4.50 for younger guests. Those interested in eating should call the center at 802-2879200 one day in advance to reserve a plate. Cancellation notices are appreciated. Its birthday dinners, which are held each month, are some of the most popular, Hutson said. “One month it will be a full turkey dinner and another month it will be ham and scalloped potatoes, she said. “Those attract the most people and we can serve up to 67 people.” Young at Heart is the only meal site in Rutland County that prepares all its

meals on-site. The center serves about 1,000 meals per month on-site and via its Meals-on-Wheels program, said Hutson. The center’s reach expands far beyond Poultney, serving meals to residents in Vermont and New York towns including Fair Haven, Granville, Castleton, Rutland and Middletown. Groups from Salem, New York and Chittenden also attend regular meals at Young at Heart. “Just because we’re located in Poultney doesn’t mean that we just serve Poultney residents,” Hutson said. “A lot of people come to us.” Hutson added that Young at Heart serves meals “family-style.” “It’s very interactive,” she said. Meals on Wheels are delivered by volunteers to seniors in the Poultney area who are unable to come to the

center. Arrangements for Meals on Wheels can be made by contacting the Vermont Council on Aging at 802-7865990. Just as important as eating right is exercising and staying informed, Hutson said. Educational programs and classes are also offered at the center. Twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., the center offers Bone Builders, a lowimpact exercise class. It also hosts programs with speakers from various agencies including AARP, Center of Vermont Elders (COVE), the Rutland County Sheriff ’s Department and Rutland Regional Medical Center. Discussions range from Medicare updates to health and safety issues for seniors. “…everything from proper disposal of medication to safety in the home or parking lots,” Huston said. “It helps keep them informed and keeps them in the loop and educated about issues around them,” she added. Young at Heart also offers free use of Wi-Fi and laptops. “We don’t get much use of the laptops, but a lot of people use the Wi-Fi,” Hutson said. “People who have smartphones and kindles, they come in and show their dinner mates pictures of their grandkids. They also look up things and watch funny cat videos,” she joked. Young at Heart, located at 206 Furnace St. in Poultney, is open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It has served Poultney and the surrounding communities for 41 years. It has two full-time employees and its volunteers log more than 450 community service hours each month.

Brain-healthy habits everyone should embrace Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The AlzheimerÕs Association says that more than five million Americans are living with AlzheimerÕs disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian AlzheimerÕs Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain.

It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.

Exercise Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory.

The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.

Quit smoking The AlzheimerÕs Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.

Eat healthy foods Foods that are good for the heart and

blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.

How the American Legion can help Veterans By Deb Brosseau There are many programs set in place to aid veterans with disabilities designed to improve quality of life. These benefits are available to DAV, VFW, American Legion and Wounded Warrior members. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Vietnam veteran Roy Eckler about how one of these benefits has greatly improved his quality of life. Roy Eckler, a resident of Fair Haven and Vietnam veteran, has been slowly losing his sight for the past few years

and is now considered legally blind. Through the American Legion, Eckler attended a sight school and learned how to re-do the everyday tasks that so many of take for granted. Eckler attended the Eastern Regional Blind Center in West

AARP driver safety program at Rutland Regional Driving is a complicated task. It requires people to see and hear clearly; pay close attention to other cars, traffic signs and signals, and pedestrians; and react quickly to events. It’s common for people to have declines in visual, thinking, or physical abilities as they get older. As a result, older drivers are more likely than younger ones to have trouble in certain situations.

Rutland Regional Medical Center is hosting an AARP Smart Driving Course, Saturday, May 3rd from 5:009:30pm at the CVPS/Leahy Community Education Center, 160 Allen Street in Rutland. This is an excellent opportunity to refresh your driving skills and learn strategies to stay safe behind the wheel. Among the topics covered will be how to adjust your driving to age relat-

Service at a time of need People are touched, lives are honored, healing ceremonies are created and the funeral is a vital and important part of the marking of the passing of a life. We have accepted the reality that meeting the needs of our families must take on a new look and new approach. We strive to make each family’s experience as meaningful to them as possible. With the family’s input, we can provide a truly unique and memorable service that honors the life and legacy of their loved one. The economic concerns our world is facing have altered what people can spend; we try to provide a memorable tribute for the loved one of the families we serve and stay within their financial boundaries. Many things we do on a daily basis cost nothing but mean the world to our families. There is no price for caring attention and satisfying our customer’s needs. Charlie and Mary, both licensed

trained in the specific area of conducting funerals for families who wish to have a personalized and individualized funeral service experience. Our society has become much more mobile and less tied to the church. Many people not affiliated with religion or theologies do not have a clergy person on whom to call in the times of death. Also many people are not comfortable with a traditional religious funeral ceremony. Therefore, a funeral celebrant can guide them through conducting a funeral experience that honors the loved one and celebrates their life. Gemini Fitness main mission is to make you healthier, happier Who is Gemini Fitness? As the picture shows, we are all sizes, shapes, ages, and abilities. One of our stars is 93 years old! Others are seriously overweight, have significant health challenges, or are beginners. Yet they come to us to help them change their lives. Every one of them was uncomfortable about coming in at first. They felt out of shape, too old, or in too much pain. They assumed everybody else at Gemini Fitness would be in glorious shape and know how to do everything. That’s not who we are. We cater to those who are out of shape, who have health or physical challenges, or who need to lose weight. We help strengthen people who are about to have major surgery, like hip, knee, shoulder, or back surgery. And then we help them become more functional after their surgery and physical therapy.

We are a family business. We know

members with their fitness routines every day. That is what we are here for. Since we have several hundred members, you will probably know some when you come visit. And you can start for just $11.25/week. The hardest part for you may be just walking in the door. We don’t bite, or hard-sell anyone. We will discuss your needs, how we can help you, then give you a tour. At that point you can take our brochure and go home. If you are like most of our members, you will quickly feel comfortable and begin getting stronger, healthier, have less stress, sleep better, feel more confident, and look better! That is our only mission at Gemini Fitness. To help our members get back the energy, vitality and health they may have lost. See our ad for details on our hours of operation and address.

Fainting spells in elderly linked to blood clots Falls are one of the greatest risk factors for injury among the aging population. When falls are attributed to fainting spells, people may be very eager to get to the source of the fall. Doctors have found that blood clots may attribute to fainting in the elderly. Information published in the journal Clinical Geriatric Medicine found that the elderly are at a higher risk of blood clots because of their reduced mobility. Blood clots may result in deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, and could lead to a pulmonary embolism if left untreated. DVT is a common problem involving the veins of the legs. Blood pooling in the legs may cause a blood clot to form in the deep veins of the lower leg, impairing blood flow back to the heart. A pulmonary embolism, or PE, occurs when a clot dislodges from the leg veins and travels through the bloodstream to reach the heart and lungs. According to the health site Aging Care, as many as one million Americans suffer from blood clots every year, often resulting in hospitalization. While swelling in the legs, cramping in the lower legs, skin color changes, and warmth of the skin where the clot

is located can signal a problem, symptoms of a PE may vary greatly. Shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and rapid or irregular heartbeat can all occur, says The Mayo Clinic. Researchers are finding that, in some

spells should be on the radar for other symptoms of PE, advises the American College of Chest Physicians. However, itÕs important to note that fainting can be attributed to dehydration, a drop in blood pressure and heart-rhythm disturbances. Certain risk factors put people at a higher chance for DVT and PE. These include: n prior surgery n certain cancers n cardiovascular disease n bed rest that causes blood to pool n sitting for long periods of time n smoking n being overweight Use of compression stockings to move blood more efficiently, physical activity, leg elevation, anticoagulants, and pneumatic compression can help prevent the formation of clots. Because PE can be lifethreatening, people experiencing fainting or other symptoms are urged to speak with their doctors.

Miraculous interventions discussed at Lifetree Café The true story of a lifethreatening medical condition and a seemingly miraculous outcome will be discussed at Lifetree Café on Monday, April 30th at 7:00 PM. The program, titled “Emergency: Make Room for God,” features a filmed interview with Dena Ballagh, a woman who experienced a sudden life-threatening illness but was saved largely due to the efforts of a doctor whose identity she still doesn’t know. “I was trying to get out the words ‘I can’t breathe,’ as my lungs were starting to fail,” Ballagh says. “They put an oxygen mask over my face, and I don’t remember anything after that.” During this program, participants will have an opportunity to share emergency situations they’ve experienced and

Gusakovs to play tonight The railroad never got to Tinmouth – one was planned that would have run right past the Firehouse – but David Gusakov and his son Nate are bringing a symbolical train on Friday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $10 to $15, 90 percent of which goes to the performers and the rest to the town for upkeep of the Old Firehouse. Homemade desserts, coffee and tea will be available. Donations for them will help support community activities David Gusakov is a playanything musician – Vermont Symphony; jazz at the Firehouse two weeks before with Swing Noire; bluegrass, and fiddle and banjo music with his clawhammer banjo expert son Nate Gusakov. They play with a lively, toe-tapping touch, sing with

mournful sensitivity, and exhibit a creative chemistry that can only be born of a lifetime relationship. Their music tells of the beauty and peace of home, of delight and sadness and the wild human emotions inherent in living and dying. It’s American music, with a hint of rural Ukraine, where the Gusakov family village of Zinkov lies. David and Nate Gusakov play original songs and old tunes about life and death and the beauty of the hills. Featuring clawhammer banjo, wicked fiddling, and family harmonies, the Gusakovs are creating some of today’s most unique and compelling folk music. The Old Firehouse is at the intersection of Mountain View Road and Vermont Route 140 in downtown Tinmouth, between the current firehouse and the Town Office building.

Fundraiser for Nancy Flanders Spirit of Giving at Castleton Free Library A fundraiser will be held for Nancy Flanders this Saturday, April 28 at 6 p.m. at the Poultney High School Gym Proceeds from the event will help Nancy defray medical expenses. She currently undergoing treatments for lung disease.

The event will feature a “classic Disney movie” and everyone is invited to have a “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” time. Admission is $5 and there will be popcorn, candy and drinks for sale – as well as a door prize raffle.

Public libraries epitomize the spirit of giving - sharing stories and culture through books and collections and reaching out with services to those who might otherwise have no access. In turn, the library itself benefits from the generosity of so many people who serve as regular volunteers, donate money and materials, or donate time to short-term projects that make a huge difference in helping it flourish. For all of this, the library is enormously grateful. This weekend, a group from Fellowship Bible Church - part of Neighbor Reach - will be contributing hard labor raking, cleaning up the winter detritus and preparing the garden plot for another year of community vegetables, herbs and flowers. The garden serves as a lab for experimenting with planting techniques, introducing young patrons to gardening, or

for just quietly sitting in the shade with a book or laptop. Once the garden is laid out, the library welcomes people who don’t have their own plots but would like a chance to dig in the earth to help care for it. The following Saturday, May 5, is Green Up Day. The library will open at 8 a.m. with extended hours until noon. Green Up bags will be available at the library, as well as free coffee, bagels, juice, and more. Come have a short visit with neighbors before heading out to participate in this great Vermont tradition. Many thanks to the Friends of Castleton Free Library for this “Bags and Bagels” event, which will run from 8-10 a.m., or until food is gone, rain or shine. Behind the scenes, other sporadic funding helps support the mission. This spring the library has partnered on Castleton Elementary School’s Children’s Literacy Foundation

grant application to promote children’s literacy and attended a conference to learn more about their selection as a “Year of the Book” school. One of the many exciting components of this award is that the public library also receives $1,000 worth of children’s books to add to its collection. CLiF is a non-profit organization whose goal is to nurture a love of reading and writing among low-income, atrisk, and rural children up to age 12 in Vermont and New Hampshire. Finally, the library also received word of grant funding from the Vermont Department of Libraries to help cover the cost of one performer during the 2018 Summer Reading Program for school-aged kids. This year’s theme is Libraries Rock! Stay tuned for the full schedule of events, or check the library’s Facebook page or website for updates.

working as a team to complete the boardwalk and their afternoons investigating the diverse ecology of Hildene. It’s not all work and no fun, as Youth Corps members will also be making yogurt from goat’s milk, building a birdhouse, felting, lending a helping hand at Dene Farm and exploring the greenhouse. Over the course of the two weeks, they will also learn about nonprofits that are doing important conservation and ecology work, because at the end of the two week session each will be awarded $50 to donate to one of these organizations.
