Touch Continued from front page Fire trucks from Fair Haven, West Haven, Benson and Castleton will be set up on Main Street in downtown Fair Haven, just outside of Kinder Way Café and Finder s Keepers, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 4. “We are each going to have a truck or two there to allow kids and adults to touch and look and ask questions,” said Don Proctor, assistant chief of the Fair Haven Volunteer Fire Department. Attendees will be able to explore the different types of trucks while examining different types of gear and equipment that local firefighters use to save lives every day. Firefighters will demonstrate turnout gear, the Jaws of

Life and ladders. In addition, there will be live music, games, prizes, face painting, balloons and more. “It’s about community involvement and to show what we’re about … it’s also a member recruitment for all four departments,” Proctor said. Proctor said all volunteer departments are struggling to attract and retain members. “Our numbers are down, as are many of the departments’ in the area,” he said. Added Proctor: “If we can get one or two members out of something like this, great. If we get nothing, the kids still have a great time and we’ll have some fire safety stuff there.” Many local fire department have junior programs for members as young as 15 years old. “We will have chief officers there and applications (for those interested in joining),” Proctor said.

In Fair Haven, bags will be distributed at the north end of the town green on Green Up Day from 8 a.m. to noon and the bags can be left along the roadside for pickup or returned to the town green. The coordinator is Bonnie Rosati at 802265-4529 or bonniefhpd@yahoo. com.

nature, such as waterfalls, trees and flowers,” said Williams, “but I’m also drawn to capturing portraits of people, family and events.” Added Williams: “Photography comes down to seeing new perspectives, and while I’m part of the process of creating an image, the really interesting aspect is in letting the image create itself. That is what I love to see.” Williams’ work will be complemented with musical entertainment by Jeff Anderson and Tom Behan of the High Peaks Bluegrass Band, a Bluegrass, Gospel & Old Time group. very real.” During the program, Lifetree participants will have an opportunity to discuss times in their own lives when they’ve doubted God. Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Lifetree Café is located Poultney Public Library, 205 Main St., Poultney. Please use the side entrance. Twig Remembers Shirley Davenport You know how they say opposites attract… well, the perfect example would be George and Shirley Davenport of Poultney. Now if George got upset with something, you could hear him spouting off all the way down the other end of the store; Shirley, she was quiet like a church mouse. If she got upset, you’d hear an old dry humor line from the 1940’s. The whole family were regulars at Williams’ Hardware. My favorite time with George was a couple weeks before Christmas. He’d be in the store looking for me to help him pick out a five dollar gift for Shirley for their Yankee Swap. We’d walk the whole store looking for things that were weird or different. If instead one of the boys got it at the Swap, he’d tell them he was hoping that they would get it,

but then on the sly he would tell Shirley the same thing. Like I said, the whole family shopped there, even her grandson named Tud. So anyway, Tud is in the store and says he’s taking up bowling. I ask him about it and he says he keeps getting better and better and that his goal is to beat his grandma. Well, Shirley has been bowling for years in a Fair Haven league, probably to get out of the house and give George some time to himself. I told Shirley about the challenge and she said “Well, he’s just a young lad and he’s got a lot to learn. And, Twig, he’s especially got a lot to learn about his gramma.” God Bless Shirley Davenport-Best Bowler in that household! You get what I mean… “Twig Remembers”

Floats and marchers needed for parade The 49th annual Middletown Springs Memorial Day Parade takes place Sunday, May 27, at 3 p.m. The Parade Committee invites your organization or group to participate. “Home of the Free Because of the Brave” is the theme of this year’s 49th annual Middletown Springs Memorial Day Parade, which also marks the 100th anniversary year of the end of World War I. The parade begins on South Street (Rt. 133) and Buxton Avenue and moves north to the town Green. The ceremony on the Green that follows the

parade will feature the winners of the Memorial Day student posters, poems, and essay contest. Tolling bells will reverberate through the valley in honor of those who sacrificed, after which the traditional color guard salute will be made, accompanied by the Mill River marching band. The Middletown Springs Volunteer Fire Department will have hamburgers, hot dogs, baked goods, popcorn, soft drinks, and water for purchase on the southeastern edge of the Green. The committee is seeking floats by area organizations

and businesses, children’s floats, vintage vehicles — including antique tractors and farm equipment for a brigade -- to join the vehicles from area fire departments and rescue squads. Formal or informal band or music groups are invited to participate alongside the Mill River High School Band. Your group or organization can add to the color and vibrancy of Middletown Springs’ parade. Prizes are awarded to floats. Email msmemorialparade@ gmail.com or call Bob Bruttomesso at 802-683-8106 to join.

‘DaddyLongLegs’ coming to Brandon Music May 12 DaddyLongLegs is the confluence of three well known Vermont musicians whose talents merge to form a highly original acoustic trio. The trio can be seen at Brandon Music on May 12. David Gusakov, Rick Ceballos, and Matt Witten play with “exceptional skill and taste”, says Seven Days’ music reviewer Dan Bolles. The group is playful and dynamic, infusing catchy folk songs, Celtic and “oldtimey” melodies, and early minstrel and jazz pieces with passion and intricacy. DaddyLongLegs “will take you on a musical journey around the world with their wonderful arrangements of tradi-

tional and original tunes” (The Ripton Community Coffee House). Between them, they play fiddle, viola, banjo, gourd banjo, piano, guitar, percussion, as well as sing, creating vibrant, sensitive and surprising 21st-century folk music. Ceballos is a banjo and button accordion player who has been playing and promoting traditional folk music in the Champlain Valley for over twenty five years. He has performed solo and with various groups. Ceballos recorded a solo CD of his original works in 2002 called ‘Spring is Near’. He has written music for film scores and often performs his History of the Banjo program for librar-

ies and festivals Gusakov arrived in Vermont in 1973 and has been playing music in the state fulltime ever since. A long-time member of the Vermont Symphony, he has explored a variety of other genres with any number of ensembles. Currently, in addition to DaddyLongLegs, he plays as a member of Last Train to Zinkov with his son Nate, and Swing Noire, an acoustic Parisian jazz ensemble. Witten began his performing career on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater with Pete Seeger and a bunch of other sailors and enviros. Witten’s main gig is with the Swing Peepers, who carry on the tradition of earth-friendly songs for

families in Vermont and surrounding states. With DaddyLongLegs, Witten plays guitar, keyboard, and percussion. DaddyLongLegs has played in many Vermont venues including the Tinmouth Firehouse Music Series, Bristol Best Night, Spice on Snow Music Festival, Burlington City Arts Noontime Concert Series, and Burnham Music Series. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Concert tickets are $20. A pre-concert dinner is available for $25. Reservations are required for dinner and recommended for the show. Venue is BYOB. Call 802-247-4295 or e-mail info@brandon-music.net for reservations or for more information. Brandon Music is located at 62 Country Club Road in Brandon, VT Vermont. This event is a part of Vermont Arts 2018, celebrating arts in Vermont.
