Mason Continued from front page knit community aspect of life,” related high school coach Todd Hayes. “She has a great heart and is all about family.” In fact, it was the familial feelings surrounding the women’s team that cemented Mason’s decision to attend Green Mountain. “I chose GMC because of the family environment similar to the one I experienced during my high school career,” said Mason. “GMC also works with the community, so I can continue working with those people I have become so familiar with

Hunger Continued from front page butter, macaroni and cheese, canned protein (tuna, chicken and turkey), beans (canned or dry). Healthy, low-sodium, lowsugar items such as beans, oatmeal and other whole grains, and canola or olive oil are also accepted. “It’s an easy way to donate to your community,” said Jason Eaton, Fair Haven postmaster. Food collected in Fair Haven will be donated to Fair Haven Concerned, Eaton said. Items collected in Poultney and Castleton will be donated to their respective food shelves, he said. Eaton said food should be

Roma Continued from front page auctioned off by the Washington County Local Development Corporation. “It went well the other day; the property went for $71,000,” said Deanna Derway, president of the LDC, adding that the money will be used to pay the back taxes on the property as well as the water bill, thus allowing the new owners a fresh start. The Roma operated at the location for 85 years, from 1927 to 2012. After the Roma closed, the restaurant continued as Lucia’s and then Cook Street Station. Legal notices published prior to the auction stated the property had a lien of $161,116.63 against it. Derway confirmed the sale represents a loss to the corporation, which will go against the LDC’s portfolio. The auction turned into a bidding war, as several parties showed up. Ultimately the highest bidder was none other than Erik Ross, an owner of Ross Chevrolet on Broadway in Whitehall. Ross and his wife Laurie rallied with four other couples – all with deep ties to the community – in an effort to revitalize not only the Whitehall landmark, but Whitehall itself. “We rallied alright,” said Cheryl Putorti, co-owner of Putorti’s Broadway Market. She went on to identify the other involved parties as husband Francis “Fra”

over the years.” Having attended countless basketball games at the Eagle Dome over the past few years, Mason should be quite familiar with head coach Brad Rideout having seen him up close and personal. While a few initial jitters won’t be out of the question, she should quickly adapt to essentially playing in her back yard. “I am a little nervous [about making the transition to play collegiate basketball], but once I get in the gym the first time, I think I will be fine.” Mason should add some skill and depth to the Eagles’ front court having eclipsed the 1,000 point plateau in her career. This past year Mason

was one of the Marble Valley League D Division’s leading rebounders finishing with a total of 231 boards. The senior forward was recognized as a MVL D Division First Team All-Star and played in the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game on the South squad contributing seven points. Staying close to home for Mason will be incredibly valuable. “It is going to be nice to be able to play ball close to home so I continue to benefit from the support that everyone has provided me with throughout the years as well as truly making it a home court advantage,” said Mason.

placed at residents’ mailboxes. “Our carrier will pick up food if people leave it out,” said Jennifer McDermott, Pawlet clerk. Food collected in Pawlet will be donate to the Pawlet food shelf. “It goes for a good cause,” McDermott said. “There are a lot of people out there in our community that are struggling to make ends meet. If people can share what they have, it will benefit their local community.” The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is the largest one-day food drive in America, according to the organization’s website. All food stays in the area in which it is collected. Nationally, the drive last year collected more than 71 million

pounds of non-perishable food in more than 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This figure brought the quarter-century total to more than 1.5 billion pounds. Eaton said Fair Haven collects quite a bit of food to donate each year. “We do pretty well,” he said. The food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive most of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. By springtime many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.

Putorti; Michael and Kathy Putorti; Tom and Patti Abbott; and Dan and Debbie O’Rourke. “Ever since it closed a number of years ago we talked about it,” Cheryl Putorti said, adding that initial prices for the restaurant were too steep to be able to turn a profit. When Derway and the LDC announced the bidding would open at $50,000, the group decided to go for it. Although Erik Ross’s name is on the paperwork, both he and Cheryl Putorti said the group will be forming a limited liability corporation and everyone involved will have a set job. And the LLC’s name? The Roma LLC. “I’ve been around here a long time and I know how much that place means to people,” Erik Ross said. “Whitehall needs this restaurant,” emphasized Cheryl Putorti. However, before 209 Broadway becomes a staple of Whitehall once again, there is much work to be done with Cheryl Putorti specifically referencing the need to repair a leaking roof and replace rotten floorboards. “When it’s ready, trust me, we’re going to go big,” she said. With regards to a timeline, Erik Ross stated the best-case scenario is possibly this fall , but next spring is more likely. “We want to do it right,” he said. The group has yet to settle on a name for the establishment but Cheryl Putorti hinted at possibly returning the restaurant to its roots and naming

it the Roma. “I can’t say we haven’t discussed that,” she said. Needless to say, upon hearing that such an iconic piece of Whitehall’s history is slated to reopen, members of the community were beside themselves. “You got a good group of people right there,” said former village trustee Mike LaChapelle of the buyers. “It should work this time.” “If Cheryl and Francis Putorti have anything to do with it the food is going to be good,” added Carol Greenough. “It’s a no-brainer; it sounds like a really good idea.” Greenough also provided a little historical perspective on the restaurant. “When I came here in 1967 it was the place to go,” she said. Both LaChapelle and Greenough said the Roma was not only well-known among Whitehallers but also regionally, with people coming from near and far to sample its Italian fare. “They used to have the best pizza in the area,” LaChapelle said, adding that once the Roma doors reopen, the first thing he’s ordering is another pizza. “It was really special, not just in the village,” Greenough added. “There were several pasta dishes that were excellent.” Regardless of what the group decides, Derway perhaps summed up the community’s thoughts most succinctly. “I look forward to getting a good meal over there,” she said.

Castleton Free Library to host discussion on happiness What is happiness? Can it be measured? What is the relationship between happiness and virtue, money, pleasure, relationships, mindfulness, and satisfaction? If you ever ponder this, come to Castleton Free Library at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17 for a talk by William Edelglass on “The Genealogy of Happiness - From Aristotle to Positive Psychology.” The program will begin with an overview of different conceptions of happiness in Western philosophy, religion, and political theory. Edelglass will then turn to the numerous claims about what makes people happy based on results of the “new science of happiness.” He will conclude by reflecting on findings of positive psychology in the context of historical ideas of happiness. Edelglass teaches philosophy, environmental studies, and Buddhist studies at Marlboro College. He has published widely in Indian and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, environmental philosophy, and 20th-century European thought. His background includes work as a wilderness guide for Outward Bound, and three years teaching Western Philosophy to Tibetan monks at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamsala, India. This talk is a Vermont Humanities Council program, supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Vermont Humanities Council. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the NEH or VHC. The event is free, open to the public, and accessible through the library’s north entrance;

According to Charlie Brown, “Happiness is two kinds of ice cream” and “being alone every now and then.” If you agree, then enjoy a bit of ice cream at the program, and borrow some books for your alone time. The library shelves are full of new titles and displays to feed your spring fever and curiosity. How about The Pruner’s Handbook, or Heirloom Plants for meditative work in fresh garden beds? Or Radio Free Vermont - A Fable of Resistance, Bill McKibben’s first novel? Or new collections of short stories or poetry; a bio of David Bowie; a photo-essay on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail; kids’ books from the newly released awards lists? Or how about advice from Happiness is a Choice You Make: Lessons from a Year Among the Oldest Old? Visit the library; it has things to make you happy.

Student-led walkouts explored at Lifetree Café The rise and impact of student-led school walkouts surrounding gun control will be discussed at Lifetree Café on Monday, May 14 at 7 p.m. Admission to the 60-minute event is free. The program, titled “In the News: Banning Guns,” features interviews with two students who organized walkouts at their high schools, one in favor of gun control and one in opposition.

standing the viewpoints of others. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. “We’ve got your Mom!!!” That’s right, she’s cooking down here. At least that’s what all your friends are going to think when you bring them down to the Birdseye. It’s because our food is home-cooked good. We’re making fresh soups daily, cooking hearty meals, and getting warm baked pies delivered to our back doors. Our cooks (your surrogate parents) can make you a hot plate of food in minutes. So come home to the Birdseye, we’re glad to have you, and we won’t make you mind your manners.
