At the Granville town-wide garage sale this weekend, these items and more will be sold for a fraction of their retail price. Residents have been busy cleaning out their garages, closets, attics and basements, and pruning their lawns, in preparation for this weekend’s sale, an annual event that draws hundreds of bargain-hunters to the village. Many rummage opportunities will be available in both Granville’s town and village next Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20. For those residents who live on the outskirts of town or those who want to capture more foot traffic in the village, there are spots available for lease of the front lawn of Granville High School. A 15x15-foot space costs
Bargain hunters from throughout the Lakes Region will be descending on Granville this weekend. just $20 for the weekend. “They run from Bardin’s all of the way along the sidewalk to Stewart’s and up toward the school,” said Bob Jones, who leases the spots to benefit the Granville Rotary Club. Proceeds average $350 to $400. Vendors who set up at the high school lots sell a variety
of items including maple products, knives, clothing and pocketbooks. “We’ve got everything. You name it, we’ve got it,” Jones said. About 15 vendors are registered to sell on the Granville High School lawn this weekend. Those interested in leasing a space should
contact Jones at 518-291-7537. “We’ve never run out of room,” Jones said. “There’s plenty of room.” “Hundreds” of people flock to Granville during its town-wide sale weekend, Jones said. Simultaneously, various churches and scout organizations and other groups will sell food and other items throughout the village. The Granville Lions Club will be selling high quality outdoor furniture behind the Post Office on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Public toilets will be available at Granville Baptist Church at 23 Quaker St., the New Creation Church at 49 Main St., and at the Chamber of Commerce building on the corner of Main and Church streets. The annual event is sponsored by the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Students have been hard at work this year learning the science and technical aspects of greenhouse operation and are finally ready to showcase the fruits of their labors. From garden starters to patio pots of flowers, there is something here for everyone. This year the students are especially excited to showcase the absolutely stunning begonias in 10” hanging baskets and pots. Middletown Continued from front page During the ceremony on the Green that follows the parade, Master of Ceremonies Robin Chesnut-Tangerman will pay tribute to those whose efforts on the “home front” supported the troops and kept Vermont’s towns and farms running in the absence of those who were serving “over there.” Mention will be made of our town’s one military loss, Private Mosely Hastings Gray, who was killed in action on October 23, 1918, within weeks of the declara-
tion of peace. A highlight of this year’s ceremony will be two performances by students of Middletown Springs Elementary School. “I’m Thinking of You,” a choral reading by the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who wrote this collaborative poem, will be followed by a student rendition of “In Flanders Fields” by Canadian poet John McRae. Winners of the annual Memorial Day posters, poems, and essays contest will be announced, along with presentations of certificates and prizes to winners of the float competition and the area-wide fire
department and rescue squad contest. The event will close with the raising of the flag, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the traditional honor guard salute, accompanied by the Mill River Marching Band. The Middletown Springs Volunteer Fire Department will have hamburgers, hot dogs, baked goods, popcorn, soft drinks, and water for purchase on the southwestern edge of the Green, not far from a canopy featuring a display of all entries from this year’s Memorial Day student writings and art contest.

Homosexuality, faith discussed at Lifetree Café How God feels about homosexuality will be explored at Lifetree Café on Monday, May 21 at 7 p.m. Admission to the 60-minute event is free. The program, titled “God and Gays: An Hour of Civil Conversation,” features the filmed stories of Jeff Chu, author of Does Jesus Really Love Me? A Gay Christian’s Pilgrimage in Search of God in America, and Christopher Yuan, author of Out of a Far Country. During the program,
Yuan, a professor at Moody Bible Institute, shares his story of finding a Christian faith and wrestling with his sexuality as a gay man. In addition, Chu discusses his journey crisscrossing America speaking with a wide range of Christian groups. “I’d be lying if I said faith was easy for me now,” he said. “There are days I believe Jesus loves me and every single part of me. And there are days when I doubt that.” Participants in the Lifetree
program will have an opportunity to discuss issues relating to homosexuality and faith in a safe, caring environment. Events on tap at Slate Valley Arts Slate Valley Art at Fox Hill has aa full itinerary of events this week with six events scheduled throughout the coming week. On Friday, May 18 SVA will host a Script Writers Workshop led by Karen Klami. This is an ongoing, weekly workshop for college-aged on up individuals who wish to hone their skills in writing stage plays and screenplays. A Blooming Day at Rupert Kittay Saturday The Rupert Kittay Library’s Plant Sale will be taking place on Saturday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be well-labeled annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables available for all your gardening needs. The plants will be in both pots and six-packs,as well as hanging baskets. The plants have been grown
locally. If your garden has produced more perennials than you need, the library will be happy to add them to the sale. Please label the plant and bring them to the library between May 16 and May18. This is one of the library’s fund raising events that contributes to

A history of vegetables May 20 at Pawlet Library The Pawlet Public Library hosts Vermont Humanities Council speaker Rebecca Rupp, who will present the surprising history of common garden vegetables, on Sunday, May 20 at 3 p.m. Her talk, “Wolf Peaches, Poisoned Peas, and Madame Pompadour’s Underwear,” is geared for gardening enthusiasts and history buffs with a sense of humor. The program is free, and attendees are encouraged to swap vegetable seeds after the program. During her talk, Rupp discusses the stories behind many favorite vegetables, among them the much-maligned toma-

She has written nonfiction articles for many national magazines on topics ranging from the history of

In addition, she has been an educational consultant for the America Library Association’s Book Links and the Vermont Center for the Book, and the author of “Good Stuff,” the educational resources column in Home Education Magazine. Free community presentations by renowned substance abuse expert Youth substance abuse is a concern in Rutland County. Michael Nerney, a renowned expert on substance abuse prevention and education will be speaking on Teen Substance Abuse issues on Wednesday, May 23 from 6-8 p.m. in the Withey East Room at Green Mountain College and Thursday, May 24 from 7-9 p.m. at the Brandon Inn. Here are some grim statistics from a 2016 Vermont Young Adult Survey: In Rutland County 43 percent of young adults binge-drank in the last 30 days; 44 percent of young adults used marijuana in the last 30 days; and 12 percent of young adults used prescription stimulants for non-medical purposes in the past year. Meanwhile 10 percent of high school students have drank alcohol before the age of 13 and nine percent of high school students have misused a prescription stimulant or pain reliever. These stats are from a 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Families and community members ask these questions time and again: Why do teens love risk-taking, including using alcohol and drugs? How
do addictive drugs change the adolescent brain? “Green Mountain College is delighted to host such a nationally recognized expert on the impact of substance use on the developing brain, and to be able to do so for our whole community at no cost. We are grateful to the Partners for Prevention of Rutland County for making this timely and important presentation possible.” said Peg Gregory, LICSW, with Green Mountain College. Adults and children are encouraged to attend Modern Times Theater’s old fashioned puppet show and music concert on Sunday, June 17, 3-5 p.m. Vermont Vaudeville co-founders Rose Friedman and Justin Lander perform That’s What I Call Sweet Music: The Troubles and Travails of Puppetry’s Favorite Loudmouth, Mr. Punch. Their entertainment features a mini-concert with cornet, ukulele, upright bass, fivestring banjo and bicycle pump. Back by popular demand, the Washington County Band performs on Saturday, August 4 from 7-9 p.m., on the library lawn. Active for more than 30 years, the band has grown steadily, both in size and musicianship. William Hosley, collector, photographer and preservationist, presents New England Impressions: Art and the Making of Regional Identity, 1885-1950, on Sunday, Sept. 16 from 3-5 p.m. The aspiring New England artists, who are the subjects of his talk, share a reverence for place, past, seasonality and ideas associated with New England’s epic heritage. The library pulls together its collection of New England art in a special exhibit for the occasion. Hosley is a Vermont Humanities Council Speaker, and the program is free. On Thursday, Oct. 11 from 6-9 p.m., the library’s Board of Trustees hosts a fundraising dinner and silent auction at The Barn in Pawlet. The proceeds from the event help fund the continuation of free library programs and the purchase of new books for adults and children. Advanced registration is required for this fall foliage dinner and opportunity to support the library. In November, a motor coach tour to King Arthur Flour in Norwich, kicks off a series of public programs in collaboration with the Vermont Humanities Council’s Vermont Reads 2018, featuring the book Bread and Roses, Too by
Vermont author Katherine Paterson. Her book about the 1912 “Bread and Roses” strike in the Lawrence, Massachusetts, textile mills is seen through the eyes of a young ItalianAmerican girl and a runaway boy, who are sent temporarily to a foster family in Barre. Advanced registration and $55 payment is required for the King Arthur Flour tour and demo, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, departing the library at 9 a.m. and returning at 5 p.m. Copies of the book will be available to read on the motor coach. On Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 1-2 p.m., the library’s Tea Read Book Club invites the public to a book discussion about Bread and Roses, Too. The final session in the library’s Vermont Reads 2018 programs will be held at the Slate Valley Museum on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 1-2 p.m. to view exhibits that interpret the immigration experience of many families who moved to the local area to work in the slate industry. The book discussion is free and the museum visit is five dollars. The 2018 season of public programs at the library concludes with a Holiday Tea on Sunday, Dec. 16 from 2-4 p.m., courtesy of the staff, board and trustees. Tablecloths and teapots will grace the tables in the program room and the children’s room. Guests are encouraged to add their favorite cookies and recipes to the cookie share. Film screening Tuesday On Tuesday, May 22 at 1 p.m., Manchester Community Library will screen a 2017 biographical film about an early trial in the career of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. The film follows the young lawyer to conservative Connecticut where he defends a black chauffeur charged with the sexual assault and attempted murder of a white socialite. Rock N Brews concert series May 20 at Riley Rink The Rock N Brews Concert Series, a series of musical events presented by the Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Anchored Media and Hopridge Farms, will be making its debut in Manchester this spring. The second concert of the series will be held at the Northshire Civic Center at Riley Rink on Sunday, May 20. The event will coincide with the Shires of Vermont Marathon taking place that same day. The marathon, starting at Bennington College at 8am, will finish at the Riley Rink as the concert series kicks off around noon. The concert will feature four regional musical acts this time around. “The first concert focused more on punk and emo styles of music; this one will
have a much different feel as we focus on bluegrass, country and alternative,’” explains Joe Frey of Anchored Media and musical director of the event. “We were excited to partner with Jon Larson and the Northshire Civic Center to bring this to the Northshire community.” Opening up the day is local Outlaw Country/ Cow-Punk Bubba Lou Tugget. Next up is Billy Wylder, which has a rock, folk and world vibe. Within a similar vein with sweet harmonies is the progressive folk & singer/songwriter Honeysuckle. Last but not least Northshire local favorites Luminous Crush (featuring members of the Bondville Boys) will be closing out the day. Another twist this time around will be the focus on one
