Hey kids! Learn how to sail program. So that the Rec Committee can plan for the number of children that can be accepted into the program, early notice of your willingness to donate a boat would be very helpful. In addition to Sunfish, program organizers are also looking for donations of Youth PFDs (size Small or Large, accommodating those weighing between 50 and 90 pounds) and Teen or Adult Small PFDs (up to 120 pounds). Finally, while it’s not necessary to make the program work, if anyone who has a Sunfish dolly wanted to donate or lend that, it would be most appreciated. The goal is to make youth sailing instruction a regular feature of the Rec Committee’s summer offerings and even to add a kids’ racing program. If you have equipment to contribute or would like to help with the program, please contact either Amy Clapp, Recreation Committee Chairperson,
This summer, the Castleton Recreation Committee will initiate sailing lessons at Crystal Beach for children entering 4th through 8th grades. Dates and fees will be announced at a later date. Some area residents recall the days when the surface of Lake Bomoseen bloomed with sails. Many were flying on Lightning class sailboats that raced most weekends through the summer, but lots of lake visitors and residents also got out there for a few hours of relaxing, non competitive “day-sailing.” Since this new program will teach young people to sail using Sunfish sailboats, the Rec Committee is asking area residents to donate their rarely used Sunfish. Those who donate boats can claim a charitable deduction and would be able to continue to use their former boats, which will be stored at Crystal Beach, when not in use by the youth

Castleton Free Library Connection
Library to explore ways to ‘strengthen the social fabric’ At the recent annual Vermont Library Conference, your librarians and a trustee heard inspiring words about the state of libraries in today’s digital world; and refreshingly, the main focus was not on technology but on relationships. We heard sentences like, “Deep roots and connections to “place” build resiliency and lead to happiness,” and “We need to create worlds we WANT to live in,” and “The community is the heart of the library.” Libraries are transforming from emphasis on collections to connections; from privatization to new models for sharing resources (familiar territory for public libraries). Speaker Bill McKibben stressed that there is no possible way to solve
our big problems (e.g. climate change) unless we work together. Another speaker urged that we avoid entrapment in the “Edifice Complex” - narrowly defining the library as a piece of real estate with brick instead of a service area rich with human and natural assets. Serendipitously, a new batch of library-to-museum passes just arrived at the library, along with updated passes to VT State Parks and Historic Sites. This is a fantastic partnership between Vermont attractions and libraries, providing free entry to these venues that celebrate the natural and cultural wonders defining our home place. (We thank the Friends of CFL for purchas-
ing some of the passes.) The state park and historic site passes allow entry to Day Use areas (10:00 a.m. to sunset) for up to eight people in one vehicle. There are 34 qualifying parks and nine historic sites across Vermont. New this year are passes to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science Nature Center (VINS) in Quechee, and Billings Farm & Museum in Woodstock. Other museums to explore include Wonderfeet Kids’ Museum in Rutland, the American Precision Museum in Windsor, Hildene (Lincoln Family Home) in Manchester, the Vermont History Museum & Heritage Galleries in Montpelier and Barre, and Shelburne Farms. There is a

Help support July 4th festivities The Castleton community is invited to support the Celebrate Castleton July 4 festivities this year. On Friday, May 25 from 6-8 p.m., a fundraiser mixer with music is being held in The Loft, upstairs over the Lake Bomoseen Lodge Taproom. Tickets will be sold at the door and are $20. This price includes pizza and wings, one drink and a $10 donation to the July 4 fireworks and parades. Plans have already begun to celebrate July 4 and include a
reduced-price pass for Echo Lake Aquarium and Science Center in Burlington, and half-off for Shelburne Museum. Any registered Castleton Free Library patron may borrow a pass for a 3-day period on a first-come, first-served basis. In the coming months, we will be exploring additional ways to “strengthen the social fabric” by working together, being creative, and helping each other appreciate our home (or second home) place. In the meantime, borrow some books from us (or any other library through Clover, the updated free interlibrary loan system), and a pass, and head outside into the verdant, interconnected spring.

breakfast, two parades -one downtown at 10:30 a.m. and one on the water at 2 p.m. - a barbecue, concert and fireworks of course. Bright orange containers to drop donations in are around town. If you have enjoyed Castleton’s July 4 fireworks in the past, that you will continue to show support so the tradition can continue. If you need any further information, contact Davene Brown at gdddbrown@hotmail.com or call 802-468-2281.
The Post 49 American Legion in Fair Haven can be interesting. The bar is open before the meetings and some of the younger guys can really interrupt by asking a lot of nonrelated questions. However, there have always been people to step up and put a halt to the foolishness. In the 1960’s, when my dad was Commander (4
times), he was on top of this and had big support from old Clayton Presson (President of Smith Garage right where Fair Haven Auto is today). In the 1970’s it was Ed Pushee (who owned a successful garage where Stewart’s stands). He had a young good mechanic named Dave Stikeman, and Mickey Welch pumped gas.

Well, young Dom Sbardella was paying attention and took charge in the late 1970’s and continued well into the 1990’s. Dom’s family had purchased the low Hampton Restaurant (with bar) from Jerry Romania and called it Sbardella’s Fireside (after the John Tolan slate fireplace in the dance hall. My two best memories: Mother Carmen’s (Minnie) cheeseburgers (Grade A beef cooked in olive oil) Yummy! They got the big color TV at the bar and the only one who could tune it properly was Dom-who was color blind. God Bless Dom Sbardella – overseer of conduct at Post 49 while in his 50’s. The presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Was the American Civil War the last Napoleonic War or a modern war? What transformations took place during 1862-1865 that changed warfare as experienced by the Washington County boys during their service in the federal army? A detailed analysis will explore those changes that were wrought by the American Civil War as viewed through the eyes of our citizen soldiers. This informative presentation is a new perspective not previously presented by the speaker. The presenter is Michael Russert, a Civil War

The parade begins immediately after a ceremony honoring this nation’s veterans, which is held at the memorial at the intersection of Main and Washington Streets. The parade begins and ends here, starting at 2 p.m. In past years, the parade has featured marchers from the local fire department and Little League teams. Old cars have also graced the parade route, ushering in the unofficial start of summer in Fair Haven style. Parke stated that since the parade has grown over previous years it has been extended one hour. Open Continued from front page This year more than 220 artists at 179 sites across Vermont. Some artists’ handmade works will be for sale this weekend. The self-guided Open Studio tour features the work of glassblowers, jewelers, printmakers, potters, furniture makers, weavers, ironworkers, painters, sculptors, quilt makers and wood carvers. Many participating galleries will host gallery talks and feature special exhibits in conjunction with this event. In the Lakes Region, several studios will open their doors to visitors, including Karen Deets, a strained glass artist in Fair Haven. This weekend, Deets will
open her 728 Moscow Road studio to the public to view her art and participate in making painted, fused and paneled stained glass. “It’s an opportunity to learn about the process,” Deets said, noting she guides visitors in scoring and cutting glass. She said she hopes she can encourage visitors to “appreciate the art of glass in thriving and the beauty of it.” Deets’ studio is typically only open to the public by appointment only. This weekend, all are invited to view and purchase her works, which can be found hanging in windows and decorating gardens. “It is unique in that it is probably one of the only art forms that changes so dramatically as light around it changes,” she said.
Deets has done glasswork for about 40 years. Living in the Lake Bomoseen State Park area since 2010, she oftentimes uses the Vermont landscape and wildlife as her inspiration. “I came here for the beauty and inspiration of Vermont,” said Deets, who previously lived in suburbs. “I just love, love, love the birds, mountains, trees, insects…,” Deets said. Lately, Deets’ glasswork has revolved around the theme, “The Pollinators,” featuring butterflies, bees and more. “It’s part of my values. I am a gardener and always planting things … and caring for the environment,” Deets said. Deets encouraged in-state and out-of-state visitors to tour the Green Moutnain State this
weekend to catch a glimpse of all of its artists. She suggested using both days to explore the entire state. “We had a ball. One day we went south and the next day a little bit north and hit all kinds of art studios,” Deets said, regarding when her daughter and she did the self-guided Open Studio tour. Other local artists participating in the tour include Merwin Gallery - Tom Merwin. Oils on canvas, sumi ink drawings. 557 Main St, Castleton; Freedom Forge Jon Pintello. Forged metal, birdhouses, garden sculpture, lamps, tables. 926 Blissville Road, Castleton; Otherweis Limited - Dick and Nancy Weis. Encaustics, painting, collage, drawing. 188 Main St, Poultney; Stone Valley Arts at
