Everything’s for sale! Poultney’s Town Wide Yard Sale to features hundreds of sales By Krystle S. Morey Residents and businesses in Poultney, Vermont are gearing up for their annual townwide yard sale on Saturday, June 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. The event, which is Poultney’s spring version of the town’s fall yard-sale, is a perennial favorite. Buyers and sellers range from far and wide. People are drawn to the event from all over Vermont and eastern New York, said Brenda Cyr, Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce president. “It’s usually pretty packed,” said Cyr. She estimates a couple of thousand people attended the event last year. Perhaps some of the curb appeal stems from the fact that the event is not just another town-wide yard sale – it’s a unique amalgam of yard sale, farmers market and everything in between. More than 80 vendors and even more community members set up to hawk their wares during the spring sale each year. Crafters, food vendors, maple sugar produc-

Free Continued from front page of summer. The Vermont State Parks have hosted the event for two decades. “We want people who may not have been before … to be able to have a day to get in for free,” said Rochelle Skinner, parks sales and service manager. “They may like it enough to come back.” “People are welcome to come out and explore … maybe try a new park,” she said.
Last year, more than 20,000 people participated. Skinner said a lot of people who know about it schedule family parties and reunions during “Vermont Days Weekend” because they can get a large number of people into the parks without having to pay. Other participants use the weekend to swim, picnic and hike for free. “It gives people a taste of what good things are to come (during summer),” Skinner said. A few special events are
planned for Saturday, June 9, only. Vermonters and Vermonters-at-heart can learn about the history of the Green Mountain State with free admission to the Vermont History Museum in Montpelier. Saturday is also free fishing day in Vermont. In-state and out-of-state residents can fish at any Fish & Wildlife access June 9 without having a Vermont state fishing license. “Everyone can fish without a license, in any body of water,” Skinner said.

Arkway, a former philosophy professor at New York University, took up painting 12 years ago after she retired and moved to Vermont. The first workshops she took were with Robert Carsten at the SVAC in Manchester. Subsequently she studied painting in pastel and oil at the Art Students League and the National Academy School of Art in New York. She has also taken workshops in Portugal and Italy as well as in Canada,
New Mexico, and in various other locations in North America. Arkway’s subject matter is varied. Besides painting landscapes, she also likes to paint portraits of animals and people, flowers, still life, people at work and at play, waterfalls and seascapes. All but one of the paintings in her current show are pastels. The odd one out is an oil painting entitled “Lucy and Friend.” The subject matter of the pastels in her current show at the library includes gardens, ponds, animals, and landscapes, both local and faraway. The library’s hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 802867-5774 for more information. The Dorset Public Library is located at 3331 Vermont Route 30 in Dorset.
