to incorporate community support for the project. SVT plans to hold a series of volunteer workdays to supplement the professional crew. “Today’s trail standards have changed the way trails are built - trails last longer and are less vulnerable to erosion, but they also take significantly more time and energy to build. As we work to build more new trails, and maintain the existing ones, it will be key to continue to have help from volunteers and the community”, said SVT board member Bill Alexander. SVT currently manages more than 20 miles of multiuse trails in Poultney, Wells and the surrounding area. Recent trail projects include the construction of 3.5 miles of singletrack at the town-owned Delaney Woods in Wells, and more than 7 miles of multi-use trails for all abilities at Endless Brook in Poultney. SVT also recently completed a project to plan and map 16 different gravel road bike routes, called the Slate Valley Gravel Ride

Network. The rides showcase the scenic beauty, quiet roads, and charming villages throughout the region. For more information about the project and to find out more about volunteer opportunities, visit the Slate Valley Trails website: www.slatevalleytrails.org Slate Valley Trails (SVT) is a local, volunteer-based nonprofit established in 2015. SVT’s mission is to build, maintain and promote foot and bicycling trails in the Slate Valley region of southwestern Vermont. Through this mission, SVT seeks to build community among individuals, organizations and businesses, support the local economy by promoting the region as a place to visit, and encourage the positive health benefits of being active outdoors. SVT is a chapter of the Vermont Mountain Biking Association (VMBA). Visit www.slatevalleytrails.org to become a member, donate, and volunteer.

Butcher shop opens on Route 4 in Whitehall By Matthew Saari In addition to being the birthplace of the U.S. Navy, Whitehall can now proudly say it is home to the region’s only butcher shop. The Local Butcher Shop opened at its U.S. Route 4 location last Friday after much anticipation and in preparation for the Memorial Day weekend – the unofficial start of summer and barbecues. Late Friday morning, only an hour after opening, the parking lot had several cars, their occupants eager to stop, greet the new owners and of course peruse the butcher shop’s stock. Owner Josh Cuomo said the shop currently stocks beef and pork products such as hamburger, steaks and freshmade sausage as well as cheese, Battenkill Creamery milk – which Cuomo declared is “the best milk” – and anything one would need for a weekend barbecue including sauces and dry rubs. “Anything to go with a steak,” he said. “That’s one of my passions is grilling. It’s kind of a one-stop grill shop.” As the business grows Cuomo said they plan to offer chicken products as well. Cuomo and fellow owner Jeff Cuomo need no introduction to locals as they’re the well-known owners of Champlain Beef, a generational family-owned

Josh Cuomo said the decision to transition to retail was two-fold. “There isn’t any place around you can get a good steak locally,” he said. “So many people stop at the slaughterhouse and ask if we do retail.” Secondly The Local Butcher Shop is located at 9875 U.S. Route 4, which previously housed a McDonald’s until its closure in 2015. By setting up shop there, the Cuomos are doing their part to revi-

Church to host hymn sing St. John’s Episcopal Church will host a hymn sing on Saturday, June 16 at 4 p.m. The service will feature Dr. James Cassarino, Director of the Vocal, Instrumental and Welsh Heritage programs at Green Mountain College, on the original mechanical organ. The service will feature a number of hymns including For the Beauty of the Earth, Oh Bless the Lord My Soul, and Amazing Grace. Light refreshments and fellowship will be offered after the service. St. John’s Episcopal Church, which held its first service on May 27, 1832, sits on the historic village green in East Poultney, Vermont. St. John’s held regular Sunday services until 1931. In 2013, a group of concerned citi-

zens took on the task of caring for this virtually untouched structure. The church features the original box-style pews, stenciled walls, oil lamps and a remarkable, intact mechanical organ, one of four remaining organs manufactured by the Nutting Organ Company of Vermont. The church has no plumbing facilities, no furnace, and no electricity. Recent restoration efforts have included repair of the church roof and steeple and a complete reconstruction of the front stairs, all under the guidance of a restoration architect. For more information, please contact Reverend William Davidson of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wells by calling 518-499-1850. St. John’s Episcopal Church is located on Route 140 in East Poultney.

talize the Whitehall community by renovating a previously vacant, deteriorating building. “Whitehall needs something, don’t it,” Josh Cuomo said. With regards to stock, Josh Cuomo said he is outsourcing the beef to bring the choicest of cuts to his clientele. “I’ve been bringing in western beef for the store,” he said. “It’s all Choice or better.” The pork sausages are all made in house by family friend and general

manager Brian Bird. “He makes a fantastic sausage,” said Josh Cuomo. The sauces too are outsourced. However Josh Cuomo explained that prior to stocking the shelves with another company’s product, each sauce was carefully tested before earning a place in the store. “We tested them, we liked them and we’re going to put our name on them,” he said. The buildup to The Local Butcher Shop’s grand opening was somewhat lengthy, as rumors abounded for several months that the Cuomos were eyeing the former McDonald’s building for such a venture. Last September The Times confirmed he was seeking to purchase U.S. Route 4 property and had bid on it at auction. However the butcher shop’s future was uncertain at the time as Cuomo’s bid did not meet the franchise’s reserve – an undisclosed minimum amount the seller is willing to accept. The fast food giant ultimately did accept. The Local Butcher Shop is located at 9875 U.S. Route 4 in Whitehall and is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Josh Cuomo said those hours are subject to change based upon business developments.

them to the event for a “show and tell” session following the talk. If you have information regarding an ancestor that served in the Civil War, but don’t have an item(s), that could be shared as well. The presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Game and Sip event set for June 28 The volunteers of the Haynes House of Hope invite members of the community to join them for “Game & Sip,” a relaxing evening of board games, refreshments and conversation on Thursday, June 28 from 7-9 p.m. at Haynes House in Granville. This is a perfect setting to socialize with our volunteers, learn what why

they are passionate about their work at Haynes House, and find out if volunteering at Haynes House is something you may be interested in. Volunteers attending are encouraged to bring a friend. There is no admission charge. Just bring your questions about Haynes House and your competitive spirit. The Haynes House of Hope is a comfort care home for the terminally ill and their families. Run Continued from front page Street at 8 a.m. sharp. Prospective participants who have yet to register will have the opportunity to do on Friday, June 8 at an all-you-caneat spaghetti buffet held at the armory beginning at 5 p.m. Price to attend is $12.99. Cost to register for the halfmarathon is $45 if you preregister or $55 for day-of registration. 5K prices are $30 for preregistrants and $35 for day-of. All proceeds for the event will benefit the Whitehall Wrestling Booster Club. “Every year we’ll choose a different beneficiary as we continue,” said event organizer Heather Pauquette. Day-of registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and continues until 7:15 a.m. “They can pick up their bibs right up until race time,” said Pauquette. Initially when Pauquette began organizing the event in April only a half-marathon was scheduled, but an influx of requests asking for a smaller course prompted adding the 5K. “A lot of people were asking for it,” Pauquette said. Athletes of both events will begin their run at the Whitehall Armory. The route for half-marathoners will be as follows: Route 4, Buckley Road, Route 9 to Carlton Road before turning around, Route 9A, Poultney Street, Park Avenue, Elizabeth Street, South William

Tinmouth Old Firehouse hosting concert Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen, each well-known and loved for their decades of music making, have spent nearly a decade in a joyful musical collaboration. will receive a stuffed Sasquatch, hand-crafted by Whitehall’s own Nicole Gosselin. There will be age group awards, finisher medals and the top three finishers will receive a special prize. “Lots of prizes to be had for sure,” Pauquette said. But perhaps the most coveted prize of the day has yet to be revealed – whoever outpaces and beats Sasquatch, who has confirmed he will be descending from the hills to compete in Saturday’s events – will receive an as-yet-unspecified mystery prize. Although the prize has yet to be named, one thing is for certain – Sasquatch isn’t going to be beaten without a fight. “Sasquatch is going to run his heart out,” the elusive monster said Friday. “I just finished a 12-mile run; I’m feeling pretty good.” “It all depends on the heat though – I don’t do well in the heat,” he added. Given recent headlines in The Times – specifically the March 29 article concerning the state Department of Environmental Conservation issuing Big Foot permits – Sasquatch did have one request of area residents. “If they see me out there – don’t shoot,” he said. At least 85 people had registered for the inaugural Sasquatch Half-Marathon and 5K Race with more expected by Saturday. “Every time I look there’s more,” Pauquette said.
