15 FRIDAY Festival Now in its 26th year, the Whipple City Festival has become the premier event to kick off summer in Southern Washington County. On Friday and Saturday, June 15 and 16, the Village of Greenwich will once again host a weekend of live music, great food and drink, children’s activities, historical re-enactment, artisans and commercial vendors, a 5/10K race, free horse-drawn wagon rides, and more. Festivities begin Friday when a “History & Heritage” themed parade steps off at 6 p.m. from the K-Mart Plaza in Greenwich. A Children’s Zone with activities will be set up on Academy Street from 6 to 10 p.m. while Buck2Fifty performs at Mowry Park. Saturday will feature food vendors, local brews and wine and an artisan market with activities throughout the day. The Human Foosball Tournament will be held next to the Village Hall from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and live music in Mowry Park begins at 4 p.m. with The Roadside Blues Band followed by Eastbound Jesus at 7 p.m. Schedule and information: www.greenwichchamber.org and on their Facebook page.
Film/Music Local cellist and composer John Anthime Miller and sound designer Curtis F. Jones will premiere their new collaborative score for the 1922 German horror film by F.W. Murnau “Nosferatu,” with a screening of the silent film and a live performance of the score at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 15 at The Strand Theater in Hudson Falls. “Nosferatu” is an unauthorized film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” It was nearly lost to history when Stoker’s estate sued to have all copies of the film destroyed. Concert The Granville Area Chorus concert will be held at the South Granville Congregational Church on Friday, June 15, at 7 p.m. The concert will feature songs, hymns, and spirituals in a variety of styles both traditional and modern. Avoid a hot weather automotive breakdown Tires
When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hot-weather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form.
Hot weather causes the pressure inside of tires to rise. Overinflated tires can wear down prematurely or result in blowouts. The Car Care Council recommends checking tire pressure routinely in the summer, when tires are cold. Follow the guidelines in the owner’s manual for recommended air pressure. Look for improper tread wear, weak spots or other tire damage that may end up causing flats.
Fluid levels Hot weather can put extra demand on all fluids and engine components. Check transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and engine oil levels. Top off or change when necessary.
Battery Excessive heat can shorten the life of a battery because it causes battery fluid to evaporate more quickly. This, in turn, can damage the internal structure of the battery. AAA reports that car battery issues are the most common breakdown calls. It’s a good idea to top off a battery with distilled water if it is the kind that requires it. Low-maintenance batteries may not have filler caps and will not require water. Inspect the battery for corrosion and leakage of battery acid. This could be a sign that the battery is getting old and will need to be replaced.
Pack with breakdowns in mind
Cooling system Cooling systems work hard to keep the flow of air to the engine and prevent it from overheating during warm seasons. Compromised cooling fans or lack of coolant can be troublesome. To avoid overheating, check coolant levels before
getting on the road. In addition, have the cooling system checked by a trained mechanic prior to the summer driving season. It’s a small price to pay to avoid extensive engine damage from overheating.
Plan ahead for potential summer breakdowns by bringing along water, snacks, sunscreen, and an emergency medical kit. Be sure mobile phones are fully charged and that the number of a tow service or roadside assistance crew is entered into your list of contacts in the event of an emergency. With warm-weather road trips beckoning, it’s time to plan accordingly to prevent breakdowns that can derail fun.
What to do when your vehicle breaks down out and safely make it to the shoulder. If necessary, crawl across the front seat and exit using the passenger-side door. All passengers should exit the vehicle on the passenger-side if the car has been pulled onto the right shoulder.
Knowing what to do when a car breaks down can make such unfortunate situations much less stressful for drivers. Smartphones and wifi networks may make it less stressful to cope with broken down vehicles. However, wifi networks are not always accessible in remote locations, so drivers would be wise to revisit these tips for handling broken down vehicles, courtesy of Esurance, in advance of their next road trip.
Q Call for help. Only after they have safely gotten their vehicles off the highway should drivers call for help. Passengers may want to avoid calling until the car is off the road as well, as it can make for faster relief if callers wait until they know their exact location to call for help.
Q Turn on hazard lights. Hazard lights inform other drivers that something is wrong with your vehicle, and the sight of hazard lights typically compels fellow motorists to give drivers a wide berth and facilitate their moving off of the roadway.
Q Set up flares or triangles behind the vehicle. If it’s safe to do so, set up flares or triangles behind the vehicle. If the flares or triangles are buried in the trunk, drivers can ask a passenger to serve as lookout and warn them if they need to get away from the vehicle.
Q Attempt to get off the highway. After turning on their hazard lights, drivers who know or suspect something is wrong with their vehicles should try to get off the highway. Move into the right-hand lane as soon as possible, ultimately trying to get onto the shoulder. Avoid the left-hand shoulder if possible, as the left lane is a passing lane and motorists likely won’t be expecting vehicles in this area of the highway.
Q Turn the steering wheel away
from the road. Broken down vehicles are unpredictable, and drivers may not have the luxury of pulling over onto flat road surfaces. Turning the steering wheel away from the road prevents it from rolling into traffic if drivers are forced to pull over on an incline.
Q Be especially careful before exiting the vehicle. Exiting a broken down vehicle can be very dangerous, especially when drivers are forced to pull over on busy highways. Drivers who have pulled over into the right shoulder should wait to exit the car until there is ample time for them to get
Q Pop the hood. An opened hood is another indicator that a vehicle is broken down and can be especially valuable to drivers who do not have flares or triangles. Q Wait for help. Do not attempt to fix the vehicle on the side of the highway. Doing so leaves drivers vulnerable to oncoming motorists.

Insects and bird droppings Splattered bugs and avian surprises dropped from above can be a messy, unsightly nuisance. Their acidic composition also may cause them to damage paint over time. Bugs and droppings can be sticky, so you will need to work with something that will remove the splatter without removing the paint in the process. A product like WD-40 may help. This oily product is normally used on rust and hinges. When applied with a cloth and allowed to penetrate the stain, it can loosen difficult-to-remove sticky substances. Always test any prod-

June is National Dairy Month! FEWER FARMS, MORE MILK Dairy Industry Is Changing By Matthew Saari As ever, the dairy industry remains one of the most significant economic forces in Washington County – but there are fewer farms involved as more choose to sell out. Although metrics denoting quantities of milk produced was unavailable, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed a nationwide trend of fewer farms producing more milk. “Nationwide the dairy industry has seen a downturn the past several years,” said David Holk, county executive director of the USDA Farm Service Agency. This downturn includes an increasing number of dairy farmers succumbing to cheap milk prices, which in turn forces them to sell the farm, which in turn is purchased by more competitive farms. “In general farms still in business snap it up,” Holk said. “There isn’t too much sitting idle.” Holk likened the situation to that of retail stores. In years past there were a multitude of “mom and pop” stores as well as Woolworth’s, Ames, K-Mart and more. “Then along comes Walmart,” Holk said. However, Holk was quick to add that it is not corporate entities buying up local farms but rather generational family farms are growing ever larger. “Usually to include other family members in the business,” he said. The main force driving the buy-outs, Holk said, is the cheap prices farmers are being offered for their milk versus how much it costs to produce. Regionally, the average cost to produce milk is $20 per hundredweight, Holk said. Conversely, the same farmers are being offered only about $15 per hundredweight. Holk said this is because of the basic economic principal of supply and demand – there’s too much milk and not enough demand for it. “The dairy business now is a global business,” he said. Additionally, farmers of all stripes are fighting to buy land in Washington County. “The demand for land Hartford and south is stronger than ever,” Holk said, adding that instead of dairy farming these farmers may be raising beef cattle or growing different crops.
