Weather permitting, it will be held outside on the school’s baseball diamond and football field. Each year family and friends of grads,

alumni and community members turn out at Poultney’s graduation to support the proceeding class. “There will be plenty of seating,” said principal Joe DeBonis. No tickets are required to attend. In the case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the high school

gymnasium. School officials will decide on the location the night before. “Right now it looks like it’s a go,” said DeBonis, regarding an outdoor ceremony. DeBonis said this year’s class of Slaters boasts a good mix of students

A special edition all about you! The Lakes Region FreePress' biggest special edition of the year - "Our Town 2018" - will be published the week of July 23. This edition profiles business and industry serving the Lakes Region, and every business that participates receives a free article and picture on their business. The little community of Poultney will see a diverse crowd converging upon it on Saturday, June 23. Green Mountain College will be hosting a “Parade of Classes,” which will see alumni from as far back as the 1950’s parading through town. “This is a reintroduction of something that was done in the 1920’s,” said Laurie Martin, vice president of college advancement. Thus far 72 alumni have registered for the event with the oldest having graduated in 1958 and the youngest in 2013. “We might have more than that,” Martin said, specifically referencing a 1943

Who gives way when two boats are approaching one another? Which is the starboard side of a boat? To help keep boaters safe, the Lake St. Catherine Association is offering free safe boating courses this summer. Certificates of completion are required by the state of Vermont for everyone operating a power boat that was born after Jan. 1, 1974. Lake St. Catherine’s Frank Callahan, a certified instructor, will teach the classes so that local recreators can become certified. There will be two different classes held. The first will be held at the Poultney Volunteer Fire Department, located on Firehouse Lane off of Route 30 in Poultney, Vermont, June 28-29, from 4:30-8:30 p.m. each day. The second course will be held at the Wells Village School

The courses are free and all participants need is a highlighter and a #2 pencil for the test. It is also advised participants bring a snack. Space is limited to 24 people per class, so registration is nec-

essary. Call Callahan at 802-6459136 with any questions or to reserve a spot. The course is created by the U.S. Coast Guard and the certificate is valid in all 50 states.

“We’re inviting them to wear anything they would have worn while on campus,” Martin said. Green Mountain College used to host such a parade every year but, Martin said, for reasons unknown the college got away from this tradition. “There has been a lot of transition in the alumni office,” she said. Parade participants are scheduled to line up at 11:15 a.m. with the parade stepping off at 11:30 a.m. The “Parade of Classes” coincides with the college’s

alumni weekend, beginning Friday, June 22 and continuing through Sunday, June 24. “There will be a full slate of activities,” Martin said. Of note, the alumni weekend has traditionally been held during the spring as opposed to most colleges who hold it in the fall. Four years ago, Martin said, the college shifted the weekend to the fall like other institutions but recently the alumni rallied and returned it to its roots. For a full list of the weekend’s activities visit Green Mountain College’s website.

ly has about 35 students. “It’s the smallest one since I have been here,” he said. Students will walk across a stage that is actually a trailer that was donated to the school for graduation by Loomis Trucking. School administrators, the class valedictorian and salutatorian and alumnus Sarah Jones will speak at the graduation ceremony. Jones, a 2000 graduate, works as a research assistant at the Space Weather Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. At NASA, she develops instrumentation to study thermosphere-ionosphere coupling and the aurora and airglow from sounding rockets and small satellites and is currently developing Time of Flight ion and neutral mass spectrometers for CubeSat applications. Jones has a Ph.D. in physics

from the University of New Hampshire and a bachelor of arts in physics from Dartmouth College. She is the cousin of 2018 grad Chris Cook, of Poultney. After hearing from a series of speakers and music from the school band, the graduates will walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. Also receiving diplomas at the service will be members of the Poultney Class of 1968, who are celebrating their 50th reunion this year. About 20 members of the class are expected to attend. “We recognize them and give them a golden diploma,” DeBonis said. Poultney High School has invited the class celebrating its 50th reunion to the graduation ceremony for the last couple of years. “It’s kind of a neat thing. They enjoy it,” DeBonis said.

Starline Rhythm Boys to perform Thursday On June 21, the Fair Haven Summer Concert Series will feature the Starline Rhythm Boys. The show kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Fair Haven green. Formed in 1998, Starline Rhythm Boys gets crowds singing and dancing with its Honky-Tonk and Rockabilly performances. The group features three professional musicians with combined experience of over 100 years in various bands (including bass man Billy Bratcher’s one year stint in 1997 with Wayne “The Train” Hancock), The Starline Rhythm Boys are a full time, actively booked drummerless “Tennessee Trio”, consisting of Danny Coane (“Little Danny C”) on acoustic rhythm guitar, Big Al Lemery on electric lead guitar and Billy (“Slappin’ Billy B”) Bratcher on acoustic upright “slap” bass, in the style of Elvis’, Cash’s and Perkins’ early bands. The Starline Rhythm Boys is a unique

band with outstanding, real-deal sound, style, energy, stage presence and appearance. Its repertoire consists of many superb originals, mainly written by Bratcher, as well as great covers of both classic and obscure numbers. The group has appeared at almost every type of venue, as well as on radio and television. Hot dogs, soda, water and popcorn will also be available for purchase in the park during the concert. Intermissions are highlighted by the drawings for door prizes. These prizes are generously donated by local businesses. Starline Rhythm Boys is the second concert in the 2018 Fair Haven Summer Concert Series. The next show is June 28, when Aaron Audet is set to perform. The concerts go on rain or shine. The rain location is the Congregational Church at the north end of the park. For additional information, call the concert line at 802-265-3010 ext. 301 after 4 p.m. on the day of the concert.

The Starline Rhythm Boys will perform in Fair Haven.

Solar, lunar discovery night in Hubbardton It’s nearly summer--celebrate the longest days of the year with a “Solar and Lunar Discovery Night” at the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubbardton on Saturday, June 16, from 7:30-11 p.m. Admission is by donation. Fun for the whole family. Great way to celebrate the start of summer and the end of school. Take a close look at the sun before it

sets, and then explore the moon before it too sets after 11 p.m. Members of the Green Mountain Astronomers share with you their knowledge and telescopes, including Vermont’s largest commercially made telescope dedicated to solar astronomy. You can bring blankets, flashlights, and if you like your own binoculars or telescopes. The Hubbardton Battlefield has little modern light pollution and a

sweeping open sky, and is the perfect spot to observe the heavens. The program is dependent on weather and sky conditions. Call ahead, at 802-273-2282, to confirm the program is on. The battlefield is the site of the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Vermont. It is located in Hubbardton on Monument Hill Road, seven miles north of U.S. Route 4 from Castleton or six miles east of Vermont Route 30 in

Hubbardton. The site is regularly open Wednesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last regular day of the season is Oct. 14. Regular admission is three dollars for adults and free for children under 15. For more information about the state-owned historic sites, visit www. historicsites.vermont.gov. Join the Vermont State Historic Sites on Facebook.

Area Chorus to perform Spring Concert The Granville Area Chorus concert on Friday, June 15 at 7 p.m. in the South Granville Congregational Church will feature a variety of songs, hymns, and sprituals in a variety of styles both traditional and modern. Admission is free, though a free-will offering will be accepted to defray the cost of music. There will be a reception after the performance in the church hall prepared by the Ladies of the Church. Directed by Crystal Everdyke and accompanied by Barbara Chellis, the

30-voice choir begins the program arrayed around the audience. In the traditional “For All the Saints” the audience will be invited to join on the last verse. “O Come Let Us Sing” follows, then the chorus will take their places on the altar to continue the program with the rousing “Halleluiah Amen” by G.F. Handel. “Soon and Very Soon”, a familiar spiritual, is accompanied by a conga drum, followed by “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel?” The syncopated rhythms in this move right along.

“There Will Be a New Day” is a modern piece about the coming time, followed by “Bound for the Promised Land” on the same theme, but coming from the Great Revival of the 1800’s. “As the Deer” is a slower more contemplative piece, followed by the familiar “In the Garden”, which tells of a personal relationship with God. Mary Tooley will accompany the chorus on flute. “Homeward Bound” begins in a garden setting, but continues in expectation. Joseph Bogart is the soloist,

accompanied by four hands on the piano, the second set of hands belonging to Tooley. The title “Coming Home” tells the subject of this song, as, distracted by worldly cares, the speaker looks forward to a new home. “Show Me the Way” is a request for guidance on that quest. The final piece on the program is the moving “Raise Your Hands”, a modern piece inviting folks to maintain a steady course no matter what life throws at us.

Bomoseen State Park earns fishing honors The Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation has nominated Bomoseen State Park in Castleton as the best family-friendly fishing spot in Vermont. Bomoseen is now in the running for being named among the foundation’s “Top 10 Mom-Approved Places to Fish and Boat in the Nation.” Voting is open now through June 29 and each vote is a chance to win a family fishing and boating trip to

Florida. “Taking kids fishing can be one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a summer day,” said Shawn Good, a fisheries biologist stationed near Bomoseen who frequently fishes there with his son. “Bomoseen State Park has many of the things that make for a successful fishing trip with young children. It’s best to break up time spent fishing with other activities, and Bomoseen has playgrounds and a

beach to go swimming during that down time. There are also canoe and kayak rentals so that families can get out on the water together while they’re fishing.” Bomoseen also participates in Vermont Fish & Wildlife’s Reel Fun program, which loans fishing gear free of charge during a visit to a state park in Vermont. Bomoseen is only one of many Vermont State Parks with great fami-

ly-friendly fishing opportunities. Vermont also has more than 180 fishing access areas where anglers can fish from shore or launch a boat. Kids up to 15 fish for free in Vermont. Anglers older than 15 can buy a fishing license at www.vtfishandwildlife.com. “Make this your summer to get out fishing with your kids,” said Good. “The memories you make will last a lifetime.”

St. John’s Episcopal Church to host hymn sing event this Saturday St. John’s Episcopal Church will host a hymn sing on Saturday, June 16 at 4 p.m. The service will feature Dr. James Cassarino, Director of the Vocal, Instrumental and Welsh Heritage programs at Green Mountain College, on the original mechanical organ. The service will feature a number of hymns including For the Beauty of the Earth, Oh Bless the Lord My Soul, and Amazing Grace. Light

refreshments and fellowship will be offered after the service. St. John’s Episcopal Church, which held its first service on May 27, 1832, sits on the historic village green in East Poultney, Vermont. St. John’s held regular Sunday services until 1931. In 2013, a group of concerned citizens took on the task of caring for this virtually untouched structure. The church features

the original box-style pews, stenciled walls, oil lamps and a remarkable, intact mechanical organ, one of four remaining organs manufactured by the Nutting Organ Company of Vermont. The church has no plumbing facilities, no furnace, and no electricity. Recent restoration efforts have included repair of the church roof and steeple and a complete reconstruction of the front stairs, all

under the guidance of a restoration architect. For more information, please contact Reverend William Davidson of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wells by calling 518-499-1850. St. John’s Episcopal Church is located on Route 140 in East Poultney.

We are here to let them know that if things don’t quite work out there is always The Birdseye Diner. While they aren’t going to be gazing into a pit of open flames, we know they are going to like the end results. ‘Cause if there is anyone that knows how to cook meat to perfection, it’s The Birdseye Diner... it’s what we do!

Pawlet Public Library hosting summer reading program The Pawlet Public Library, with sponsorship from Stewart’s Holiday Match and the Vermont Department of Libraries, begins its free Summer Reading Program for children grades 1-6, on Thursday, June 21, 10-11:30 a.m. The five-session program, following the statewide theme “Libraries Rock!,” continues Wednesdays, June 27, July 11, July 18, and July 25, 10-11:30 a.m. The Summer Reading Program is designed to encourage elementary-aged children to continue reading during summer vacation. Hunter Bassett of

Granville, New York orchestrates the program, encompassing all things rock—from geology to rock n’ roll. Bassett is a graduate of SUNY Oneonta with a B.S. degree in biology. For the past two summers she has served as counselor and director of the Granville Summer Recreation program. She is currently a Mettawee Community School paraeducator in a kindergarten classroom. The program features a treasure trove of activities and books, and children earn prizes as they advance

through the sessions. Parents, grandparents and other caregivers are encouraged to join in to foster discovery and working together cooperatively. While the five-session Summer Reading Program is free, registration is required because space is limited. To register, call 802-325-3123. The program kicks off on Sunday, June 17, at 3 p.m. with a public puppet theater and music performance by Modern Times Theatre. The performance, sponsored by a Vermont Department of Libraries performance

grant, will be held at the Pawlet Town Hall Auditorium. Following the performance, the audience is invited across the street to the Pawlet Public Library for refreshments and final registration for the free Summer Reading Program. The Pawlet Public Library is housed in a renovated and accessible historic grammar school building, located at 141 School St. in Pawlet. For a full schedule of public programs, details and suggested program reading lists, visit www. pawletpubliclibrary.wordpress.com or call 802-325-3123.

Historic building donated to Stone Valley Arts in Poultney Imagine that a great stone building was constructed in Poultney in 1822. Then imagine it became the first Methodist Church in the state of Vermont and later a Masonic Lodge. Fast-forward to 2007, when two sisters, Rita Fuchsberg and Irene Minkoff, and Irene’s husband Michael Castagnaro, purchased the building in the hopes of establishing a community arts center. In 2015, Fuchsberg and Minkoff donated the building to the Preservation Trust of Vermont. “This is a great gift,” said Paul Bruhn, Executive Director of the trust.

“The trust will be a transitional owner and work with the arts organization it wants to take over the building.” Minkoff added, “It keeps the dream alive.” So, now imagine a party. To celebrate this important milestone, Stone Valley Arts at Fox Hill is holding a party at the white columned two-story stone building on East Main Street on Sunday, July 1, from 2-5 pm. The festivities will include bluegrass, folk, and jazz; a dance presentation; and children’s activities. At 4 p.m. there will be a tribute to Fuchsberg and Minkoff

for their generous gift, as well as to Bruhn and the PTV for their stellar efforts on behalf of the community. Stone Valley Arts, whose mission is to inspire interest and participation in the arts in Poultney and surrounding communities, began in the Journal Press Building in 2012. Thanks to the generosity of Fuchsberg and Minkoff, SVA moved to Fox Hill in 2016. Since then, with support of the PTV, Stone Valley Arts has presented offerings for all ages, including programs and events in visual arts, dance, literary arts, music and yoga. In 2018, the PTV

transferred ownership of this magnificent, historic building to Stone Valley Arts. Special thanks to Bruhn and PTV Board Members, Ina Smith and Jaime Lee. Poultney and surrounding communities have provided such strong support through the years. The Board of Stone Valley Arts at Fox Hill is thankful to the whole community. This thank-you celebration is a free event of art, food, music, and fun. Everyone is invited. Stone Valley Arts at Fox Hill is located at 145 E. Main St. in Poultney.

Relay For Life event Saturday at Vermont State Fairground Teams of Rutland County residents will gather at the Vermont State Fairgrounds on June 16 at 1 p.m. for an overnight relay against cancer. The event begins with a cancer survivors lap, celebrating those who have survived cancer or who are currently battling cancer. Games, music, live entertainment encourage people all through the night. Some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during the relay.

Relay for Life’s Luminaria Ceremony takes place after sundown, honoring the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer. Luminaria can be purchased for five dollars by calling 802353-7100 or 802-683-0479 or by visiting www.relayforlife.org. Also, a part of the Rutland County

Relay for Life event is the Fight Back Ceremony in which a community leader will inspire relay participants with his or her own commitment and will challenge them to take a personal pledge of action – stop smoking, eat healthier, exercise regularly – in fighting back. Relay For Life is a fun-filled event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors – anyone who has ever been diagnosed

with cancer – remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer. The American Cancer Society Relay for Life first started in May 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt took the first step of this 24-hour walk around the track in Tacoma, Washington, raising $27,000 to support the cancer society. For more information on how you can get involved in the relay, visit www. relayforlife.org or call 1-800-227-2345.

‘Evolution of Warfare’ event June 16 The Pember Library and Museum will present The Winds of Change: The Evolution of Warfare as Experienced by the 123rd New York Volunteer Infantry Saturday, June 16 at 1 p.m. The presenter is Michael Russert, a Civil War historian. Attendees who own items with Civil War provenance are encouraged to bring them

to the event for a “show and tell” session following the talk. If you have information regarding an ancestor that served in the Civil War, but don’t have an item(s), that could be shared as well. The presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Book signing Saturday at the Big Apple Diner in Whitehall Cryptozoological aficionados will have the opportunity to obtain a copy of “Abair Road: The True Story,” signed by a bonafide Sasquatch eyewitness. Brian and Sue Gosselin will be hosting a book signing at the Big Apple Diner in Whitehall on June 16 from 2-4 p.m. The Gosselins’ book relates the close-up encounter Brian Gosselin had with a Big Foot-

type creature in a field off of Abair Road in 1976. Brian Gosselin was a police officer at that time and his encounter has become the subject matter for numerous television programs, documentaries, and published books and articles across the country. Most recently, he was featured in the documentary film, The Beast of Whitehall, filmed by Seth Breedlove of Small Town Monsters.

Brian and Sue Gosselin have published their own book regarding what happened that night on Abair Road as well as many ongoing stories and events that have never been released to the public before. Signed copies of the book are available at the Big Apple Diner located at 11850 U.S. Route 4, east of Whitehall. Copies are also available on Amazon.

I have a favor to ask: If you pass first, could I write your remembrance?” I replied, “Only if I can return the favor.” Contemporaries. And here I write for a man six years my junior. God Bless Joel Williams, a very gifted writer. You get what I mean… “Twig Remembers”
