Exercise benefits both the mind and body. Study after study indicates how physical activity can reduce the propensity for illness, boost mood, lower stress levels, and much more. Still, certain people find it difficult to muster the motivation to get up and move. In 2013, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from more than 450,000 American adults ages 18 and older who were randomly polled across the 50 states. Participants were asked about aerobic physical activity outside of their jobs. The findings were eyeopening. Estimates indicated nearly 80 Taking a workout percent of outdoors is one way American adults do not get the to increase the recommended enjoyment factor. amounts of exercise each week. People most likely to exercise, according to the CDC study, were between the ages of 18 and 24. Lack of time and inspiration may be to blame for disinterest in exercise.
Boredom with routine and being unaware of alternative fitness regimens also may be contributing factors. Increasing the fun associated with workouts could lead to greater success in or outside of the gym.

3. Exercise with friends or a group.
FUN WAYS TO GET FIT 2. Tweak your playlist.
1. Do what you enjoy. Wasting time on activities that you donÕt enjoy may cause you to throw in the towel prematurely. DonÕt base fitness choices around what worked for others; find things that work for you. Exercise physiologists at John Hopkins Weight Management Center say to start

Having other people around can make workouts more enjoyable, and that interaction may spur competition that can make you more inclined to stay the course. People who were in the competitive groups in a study of 800 graduate and professional students at the University of Pennsylvania went to 90 percent more classes than those who exercised independently or were not competitive. The results were published in the journal Preventative Medicine Reports. Competition can be a driving factor in efforts to exercise.
4. Head outdoors. You may be more inclined to workout if you do so outside. Activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, swimming, and cycling on natural courses can be inspiring and burn calories.
5. Try sports or another activity. Exercise regimens do not have to include running on a treadmill or lifting weights. All types of activities can work, and some may be more enjoyable to you than traditional exercises. Everything from martial arts to dance classes to volleyball can offer cardiovascular and muscle-building benefits in a fun atmosphere. Making exercise fun motivates many people to embrace fitness and stick with their workout regimens.
Don't let sunburn derail your summer Many people find it impossible to think about summer without conjuring visions of spending endless hours outdoors from morning until evening, whether beachside, on the open water or even floating in a backyard pool. Although a certain measure of sun exposure is required for some natural functions of the body, it's well documented that too much time in the sun can be hazardous to ones health. That's why summer frolickers need to exercise considerable caution each time they step outside. Taking sunburn for granted can be a big mistake. Many people wouldn't risk burns from a hot stove or open fire, but they won't think twice about being unprotected under the very hot rays of the sun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one-third of adults and nearly 70 percent of children admit to suffering from sunburn within the past year. symptoms become noticeable. Therefore, it is best for people of all ages to exercise caution when spending time in the sun. Sunburn is one of the most easily prevented summertime ailments. It's also important to note that sunburns are not just limited to the hot weather or when it is sunny outside. Ultraviolet damage can occur at any time of the year, and also from artificial UV sources, such as tanning beds. Preventing sunburn is simple. n The Mayo Clinic says the sun's rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so schedule outdoor activities for
other times of day. Otherwise, limit exposure to the sun and take frequent breaks in the shade. n Wear protective clothing that covers the arms and legs. Some outdoor gear is designed to offer sun protection. Tightly woven fabrics tend to help the most. n Apply - and reapply - sunscreen. Look for products that offer an SPF of 15 or greater. The American Academy of Dermatology actually recommends an SPF of 30 or greater. Make sure the product is broad-spectrum, meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen thoroughly, paying attention
to the tops of feet, hands and other places that tend to go untreated. Reapply every two hours or more frequently, if necessary. n Base tans do not protect the skin. Research does not support the habit of getting a tan to prevent subsequent sunburn. n Protect the face and eyes by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and highly rated UV protection sunglasses. The Skin Cancer Foundation says a person's risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns. Use protection, stay hydrated and play it smart to enjoy summer to the fullest.
Continued from page 10 ide, sunburn can be a first- or seconddegree burn. In first-degree burns, damage affects the topmost layer of skin. However, sunburn can even affect deeper layers and cause blistering in addition to redness and pain. Sunburn also can cause some irreparable damage that goes unseen. According to WebMD, ultraviolet light from the sun can alter DNA, prematurely aging skin or even contributing to skin cancers. It can take years before

Centers Health Care
Committed to improvement for everyone's benefit Centers Health Care is the Bronxbased company that has expanded throughout the Adirondack region in the past few years. Now, they are beginning to show some verifiable proof that the claims they made when they arrived here were not just pie in the sky. In eight of the nine Center’s facilities closest to our region, the star rating for staffing in particular, has increased in the most recent rankings. After their most recent acquisitions, which included seven nursing homes formerly owned by the Capital Living Group, Centers has become the leading provider of nursing home care and short term rehabilitation in the upstate region, spanning New York from
Vermont to Buffalo. Recently, the Centers for Medicare Services which runs the Medicare.gov website that publishes the all-important health department star ratings, has shown that nearly every Centers facility in the Adirondack region has seen an increase in its overall star rating and in certain key performance indicators, including staffing. “This demonstrates that our approach to increased training and staff development, and our application of best practices across all disciplines is indeed the best approach for our residents”, according to Kenny Rozenberg, CEO of Centers Health Care. “And one area that we are especially proud of are our staffing ratings. The severe short-
age of qualified, trained nurses in New York is well-documented. There just aren’t enough quality candidates for all of the available jobs. So we invest heavily in our staff and we immediately offer increased and improved on- and off-site training.” According to Centers’ Director of Clinical Services, training is a key component of their approach to providing superior care. “We’re taking the lead in developing the next generation of trained nurses by offering courses here in the eastern Adirondacks for anyone who wants to join the healthcare workforce. Interested candidates can take CNA courses at our Warren Center in Queensbury at no cost to themselves,
with the assurance of a job upon completion. We’re working closely with the Departments of Health and Education to attract and train new healthcare employees, and that’s going to benefit our residents, and the entire region. And we offer tuition reimbursement for nurses at any level that want to continue their schooling and advance through the ranks, whether from CNA to LPN, or LPN to RN, even RNs that are interested in getting onto medical administration”. All regional nursing homes can be researched at medicare.gov, the official U.S. Government Site for Medicare by clicking on Find Nursing Homes and entering your zip code.

Strategies to get kids to exercise Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. ThatÕs not just true for adults, but for children and teenagers as well. Parents concerned about their kids living sedentary lives may have more to worry about than they know. According to a 2017 study published in the journal Preventive Medicine that analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey from 2003-2004 and 2005-2006, 19-year-olds spent as much time being inactive and sedentary as 60-year-olds. Getting kids to be more active may be especially difficult for today's parents, who must contend with the internet, social media, tablets, smart-
phones, and other distractions as they try to encourage their kids to unplug and spend more time being physically active. But parents can try various strategies to get kids off the couch and exercising. n Set a positive example. Kids, especially young children, often try to emulate their parents. Parents can capitalize on kidsÕ desire to be like mom and dad by exercising in front of their children. Young children may not be ready to lift weights or run on the treadmill, but parents can embrace kid-friendly exercises, such as walking and cycling. Invite kids along for daily bike rides or go for family walks around the neighborhood after din-
ner. n Park the car. Kids don't need to know they're exercising in order to be more physically active. In lieu of driving to the bank or pharmacy, parents can leave the car at home and ride their bikes alongside their children when running errands. If possible, parents can walk youngsters to and from school rather than driving them. n Choose friend-friendly activities. Adults employ the buddy system as a means to motivate themselves to keep exercising, and that same principle can apply to children, who might be more excited about physical activi

The wonderful health benefits of dairy products Did you know that humans are the only adult animal species that continues to consume "milk" through dairy products. While most animals wean off of their mother's milk after infancy, humans across the globe have been consuming products produced by cow, sheep or goat milk for thousands of years. And the benefits can be numerous.
Human body grows to accept milk Although dairy doubters are quick to mention that it is not ÒnaturalÓ for humans to consume milk products into
adulthood and that the body is not designed to digest the sugars and proteins in dairy, others are saying that centuries of farming have led to the evolution of human genes so that dairy products can be included in the diet. According to a study published in 2013 in the journal Nature, archaeologist Peter Bogucki was excavating a Stone Age site in the fertile plains of central Poland in the 1970s when he came across various artifacts. One seemed to be an early pottery strainer used in cheese-making. The pottery was studied, and milk proteins were found
on it. As farming replaced hunting and gathering in many areas of the world, it's surmised that the human body slowly evolved to tolerate milk into adulthood, especially if it was fermented, such as in cheese or yogurt. Several thousand years later, it's believed that a genetic mutation spread through Europe that gave people the ability to produce lactase - the enzyme necessary to digest the lactose sugar in dairy - and drink milk. Many people who retain the ability to digest milk can trace their ancestry to Europe, according to a
group of scientists brought together to work on a multidisciplinary project called LeCHE (Lactase Persistence in the early Cultural History of Europe). There are other dairy pockets from West Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.
Dairy's present-day benefits Today we know that dairy is an important source of nutrients at all ages and stages of growth. Southeast United Dairy Industry Association, Inc. says that dairy is a great source of pro

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that the calcium in dairy products is used for building bones and teeth and in maintaining bone mass. Diets with sufficient potassium may help to maintain healthy blood pressure. Additionally, vitamin D functions in the body to maintain ideal levels of calcium and phosphorous so that bones are built and maintained. The Australian Dietary Guidelines
say that consumption of milk, cheese and yogurt is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and colorectal cancer. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage children and adults to enjoy three servings of low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese or yogurt each day. Canada's Food Guide recommends between three and four servings for children in the preteen and teenage years and two to three servings for adults. Dairy can be a nutritious part of a healthy diet, and history suggests it has been for quite some time.
We’re More than You Expect. Care for Mom. Peace of Mind for You.
Kids Continued from page 12 ty if their friends are joining them. Team sports provide chances to exercise with friends, as do organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of America. But even inviting a child's friend along on a family hike or bike ride may make such activities more fun for kids. n Give gifts that encourage physical activity. Kids might want the latest device or video game for their birthdays,
but parents also can give gifts that encourage youngsters to be physically active. Bicycles, rollerblades, ice skates, and sports equipment are just a handful of potential gifts that may compel kids to exercise more. Childhood obesity is a significant problem, with the 2015-2016 NHANES reporting that 20.6 percent of youths between the ages of 12 and 19 were obese. Getting kids off the couch and exercising more often can help reduce those figures and ensure healthier futures for kids of all ages.

HEALTHY LIVING For many people, summertime is synonymous with trips to the beach, water sports and recreation. Even though summer warmth is a welcome break from winter weather for many people, State Farm warns that heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related fatalities, resulting in hundreds of deaths each year in the United States alone. Ensuring summer recreation plans remain enjoyable means keeping an eye out for heat-related illnesses and other dangers. n Hot cars can be traps. It is never safe to leave a pet, child, elderly person, or disabled individual locked in a car.
