Bargain hunters near and far will converge on the town of Castleton next week for the 11th annual Castleton Town-wide Yard Sale, to be held Saturday, June 23. An untold variety of merchandise will be up for grabs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Castleton Community Center as well as at homes throughout the town. “It’s very well attended,” said Jo Ann Riley, director of the Castleton Community Center. “I’m guessing it is well over 100 and that’s probably a conservative estimate.” Thus far, 32 vendors have signed up to hawk their wares at the community center. Riley admitted this is comparatively low as typically the center is host to 50. Riley added that many vendors wait until the week of, scouting the weather. Anyone interested in renting one of the remaining space can call the center at 802-468-3093. Cost of a lawn

Parade Continued from front page dent of college advancement. Thus far 72 alumni have registered for the event with the oldest having graduated in 1958 and the youngest in 2013. “We might have more than that,” Martin said, specifically referencing a 1943 alumnus who is attempting to rally some of his classmates for the special day. Martin said each class will be provided a banner and the parade will follow the college’s commencement route, down Main Street and through the
Fest Continued from front page body?” Each year, the festival draws attendees from New York, Vermont and beyond. “We serve between 300 and 400,” said Pat Hemenway, festival co-organizer. The festival will feature strawberry shortcake made with fresh Vermont strawberries, homemade biscuits, vanilla ice cream and homemade whipped cream, along with iced tea, lemonade or coffee. “It’s a large portion,” Hemenway said. The strawberries are purchased from Dutton Berry Farm, while biscuits come from Dellveneri Bakery, whipping cream from Thomas Dairy and ice cream donated by
ing all the locations. In addition to a wide variety of items such as fishing gear, jewelry, homemade crafts, coins and more, the community center will have food vendors on site. Maple sugar products, jams and jellies, hot dogs, baked goods and barbecue chicken will be offered for sale.
Riley said this event proves to be a perennial favorite and seems to grow in popularity each year. “People ask us to send them the information in January,” Riley said. The Castleton Community Center is located at 2108 Main St. in Castleton.
campus. Alumni will not be sporting the traditional cap and gown but rather what was fashionable at the time, whether it be the 1970’s or the 2010’s. “We’re inviting them to wear anything they would have worn while on campus,” Martin said. Green Mountain College used to host such a parade every year but, Martin said, for reasons unknown the college got away from this tradition. “There has been a lot of transition in the alumni office,” she said. Parade participants are scheduled to line up at 11:15 a.m. with the parade stepping
off at 11:30 a.m. The “Parade of Classes” coincides with the college’s alumni weekend, beginning Friday, June 22 and continuing through Sunday, June 24. “There will be a full slate of activities,” Martin said. Of note, the alumni weekend has traditionally been held during the spring as opposed to most colleges who hold it in the fall. Four years ago, Martin said, the college shifted the weekend to the fall like other institutions but recently the alumni rallied and returned it to its roots. For a full list of the weekend’s activities visit Green Mountain College’s website.
Stewart’s Shops. “It’s a different experience than going to a restaurant and ordering strawberry shortcake,” Wright said. Local artists and craftspeople will display and sell their work, including maple products, jewelry, photography, knitted items, honey and beeswax products. Items donated by Historical Society members and friends will also be for sale to benefit the organization. “It’s a nice, down-home fun time,” Hemenway said. “It’s a family event.” Music by Paul Morgan and friends, and children’s activities including corn hole games, will be offered, as well as free admission to the Historical Society Museum. On view in the Museum is the exhibit “Saving Sylvanus”, about Sylvanus Haynes (17681826), the first pastor of the
Baptist church in Middletown. In addition are exhibits on the Montvert Hotel and Mineral Springs, and the Middletown History Timeline. “We have it broken down into decades, all around the room,” Wright said. Admission to the festival, a fundraiser for the Historical Society, is free. Shortcake and a drink is available for $6. The festival will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, vendors and serving will be moved into the Historical Society dining room. “We set up tables and chairs out on the town green, so it’s a lot of fun when the weather does cooperate; but even if it doesn’t we still carry on,” Wright said. For more information, contact Hemenway at 802-235-2421 or Wright at 802-235-2376.

Castleton Free Library Column
Your local library rocks! This summer, remember the 3 R’s: Rock and Roll (because summer is for fun) and Read. Castleton Free Library is targeting all three with a lineup of free programs for all ages, and lots of books. Each year libraries across the country choose a common summer reading theme to motivate kids to keep reading and enjoying books, and to help prevent the summer reading setback that many children experience - returning to school in the fall with lower reading achievement than they had the previous spring. The 2018 national theme is “Libraries Rock!” It’s about rock music, yes, and great
ers, hands-on evening workshops, and a tour scheduled. Each program will include short book talks and time to browse and check out materials. New books from suggested reading lists and award winners are arriving weekly, as well as musical CD’s for lending. Please clip and save this line-up and check the library’s Facebook page and website for new additions: Friday, July 6 – Friday, Aug. 31: Weekly Story Hour every Friday at 10:30 a.m. will feature rock themes, musically and geologically. Geared toward preschoolers of all ages.
books that sing, but in Castleton, it will also be about rocks (because we love them). As always, the library will try to motivate kids by giving out small prizes. This year’s incentive: help your children keep track of their reading using sticker charts available at each program. Every time they read three books, or you read them together, they can choose a rock sample to add to their personal collection. Who cares whether we’re encouraging future readers, geologists or rock stars - it’s all good. Programs are free and open to all. The library will have weekly events, guest perform-

Free fishing in New York this weekend Residents and visitors can fish New York water bodies for free this weekend, June 23-24. Anglers are permitted to fish at no cost without a fishing license, which otherwise cost fishermen $5-50, on any of the state’s 7,500 lakes and ponds or 70,000 miles of rivers and streams. “Year-round, whether it’s a Hudson Valley stream in July or a frozen Adirondack lake in February, there is no better fishing than right here in New York,” Governor Cuomo said in a news release. “These free fishing days give New Yorkers and visitors alike the opportunity to experience the worldclass fishing and scenic natural beauty in every corner of this great state.”

The free fishing days program is part of Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, which under the 2017-18 budget provides $19.5 million for state land access projects and $4 million for fish and wildlife infrastructure. The program began in 1991 to give people who might not fish a chance to try the rewarding sport at no cost, to introduce people to a new hobby, and to encourage people to support the sport by purchasing a New York State fishing license. Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos said in a news release: “Ice
fishing continues to grow in popularity in New York and there is no better time to give it a try than this weekend.” While a New York State fishing license is not required to participate, all other statewide fishing regulations remain in effect. There are two additional dates when anglers can fish New York waterbodies for free this year: Sept. 22 and Nov. 11. In addition to these free fishing days, there will be dozens of free fishing clinics and events held at locations across the state. For additional information, visit d dec.ny.gov/outdoor/89821.

Exercise benefits both the mind and body. Study after study indicates how physical activity can reduce the propensity for illness, boost mood, lower stress levels, and much more. Still, certain people find it difficult to muster the motivation to get up and move. In 2013, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from more than 450,000 American adults ages 18 and older who were randomly polled across the 50 states. Participants were asked about aerobic physical activity outside of their jobs. The findings were eyeopening. Estimates indicated nearly 80 Taking a workout percent of outdoors is one way American adults do not get the to increase the recommended enjoyment factor. amounts of exercise each week. People most likely to exercise, according to the CDC study, were between the ages of 18 and 24. Lack of time and inspiration may be to blame for disinterest in exercise.
Boredom with routine and being unaware of alternative fitness regimens also may be contributing factors. Increasing the fun associated with workouts could lead to greater success in or outside of the gym.
5 1. Do what you enjoy. Wasting time on activities that you don’t enjoy may cause you to throw in the towel prematurely. Don’t base fitness choices around what worked for others; find things that work for you. Exercise physiologists at John Hopkins Weight Management Center say to start with an activity that you already enjoy, even if itÕs aligned with the trend of

Having other people around can make workouts more enjoyable, and that interaction may spur competition that can make you more inclined to stay the course. People who were in the competitive groups in a study of 800 graduate and professional students at the University of Pennsylvania went to 90 percent more classes than those who exercised independently or were not competitive. The results were published in the journal Preventative Medicine Reports. Competition can be a driving factor in efforts to exercise.
4. Head outdoors. You may be more inclined to workout if you do so outside. Activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, swimming, and cycling on natural courses can be inspiring and burn calories.
5. Try sports or another activity. Exercise regimens do not have to include running on a treadmill or lifting weights. All types of activities can work, and some may be more enjoyable to you than traditional exercises. Everything from martial arts to dance classes to volleyball can offer cardiovascular and muscle-building benefits in a fun atmosphere. Making exercise fun motivates many people to embrace fitness and stick with their workout regimens.
Don't let sunburn derail your summer Many people find it impossible to think about summer without conjuring visions of spending endless hours outdoors from morning until evening, whether beachside, on the open water or even floating in a backyard pool. Although a certain measure of sun exposure is required for some natural functions of the body, it's well documented that too much time in the sun can be hazardous to ones health. That's why summer frolickers need to exercise considerable caution each time they step outside. Taking sunburn for granted can be a big mistake. Many people wouldn't risk burns from a hot stove or open fire, but they won't think twice about being unprotected under the very hot rays of the sun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one-third of adults and nearly 70 percent of children admit to suffering from sunburn within the past year. Centers Health Care
Committed to improvement for everyone's benefit Centers Health Care is the Bronxbased company that has expanded throughout the Adirondack region in the past few years. Now, they are beginning to show some verifiable proof that the claims they made when they arrived here were not just pie in the sky. In eight of the nine Center’s facilities closest to our region, the star rating for staffing in particular, has increased in the most recent rankings. After their most recent acquisitions, which included seven nursing homes formerly owned by the Capital Living Group, Centers has become the leading provider of nursing home care and short term rehabilitation in the upstate region, spanning New York from
Vermont to Buffalo. Recently, the Centers for Medicare Services which runs the Medicare.gov website that publishes the all-important health department star ratings, has shown that nearly every Centers facility in the Adirondack region has seen an increase in its overall star rating and in certain key performance indicators, including staffing. “This demonstrates that our approach to increased training and staff development, and our application of best practices across all disciplines is indeed the best approach for our residents”, according to Kenny Rozenberg, CEO of Centers Health Care. “And one area that we are especially proud of are our staffing ratings. The severe short-
age of qualified, trained nurses in New York is well-documented. There just aren’t enough quality candidates for all of the available jobs. So we invest heavily in our staff and we immediately offer increased and improved on- and off-site training.” According to Centers’ Director of Clinical Services, training is a key component of their approach to providing superior care. “We’re taking the lead in developing the next generation of trained nurses by offering courses here in the eastern Adirondacks for anyone who wants to join the healthcare workforce. Interested candidates can take CNA courses at our Warren Center in Queensbury at no cost to themselves,
with the assurance of a job upon completion. We’re working closely with the Departments of Health and Education to attract and train new healthcare employees, and that’s going to benefit our residents, and the entire region. And we offer tuition reimbursement for nurses at any level that want to continue their schooling and advance through the ranks, whether from CNA to LPN, or LPN to RN, even RNs that are interested in getting onto medical administration”. All regional nursing homes can be researched at medicare.gov, the official U.S. Government Site for Medicare by clicking on Find Nursing Homes and entering your zip code.

Strategies to get kids to exercise Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. ThatÕs not just true for adults, but for children and teenagers as well. Parents concerned about their kids living sedentary lives may have more to worry about than they know. According to a 2017 study published in the journal Preventive Medicine that analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey from 2003-2004 and 2005-2006, 19-year-olds spent as much time being inactive and sedentary as 60-yearolds. Getting kids to be more active may be especially difficult for today's parents, who must contend with the internet, social media, tablets, smart-
phones, and other distractions as they try to encourage their kids to unplug and spend more time being physically active. But parents can try various strategies to get kids off the couch and exercising. n Set a positive example. Kids, especially young children, often try to emulate their parents. Parents can capitalize on kidsÕ desire to be like mom and dad by exercising in front of their children. Young children may not be ready to lift weights or run on the treadmill, but parents can embrace kid-friendly exercises, such as walking and cycling. Invite kids along for daily bike rides or go for family walks around the neighborhood after dinner.
n Park the car. Kids don't need to know they're exercising in order to be more physically active. In lieu of driving to the bank or pharmacy, parents can leave the car at home and ride their bikes alongside their children when running errands. If possible, parents can walk youngsters to and from school rather than driving them. n Choose friend-friendly activities. Adults employ the buddy system as a means to motivate themselves to keep exercising, and that same principle can apply to children, who might be more excited about physical activity if their friends are

The wonderful health benefits of dairy products Did you know that humans are the only adult animal species that continues to consume "milk" through dairy products. While most animals wean off of their mother's milk after infancy, humans across the globe have been consuming products produced by cow, sheep or goat milk for thousands of years. And the benefits can be numerous.
Human body grows to accept milk Although dairy doubters are quick to mention that it is not ‘natural’ for humans to consume milk products into
adulthood and that the body is not designed to digest the sugars and proteins in dairy, others are saying that centuries of farming have led to the evolution of human genes so that dairy products can be included in the diet. According to a study published in 2013 in the journal Nature, archaeologist Peter Bogucki was excavating a Stone Age site in the fertile plains of central Poland in the 1970s when he came across various artifacts. One seemed to be an early pottery strainer used in cheese-making. The pottery was studied, and milk proteins were found
on it. As farming replaced hunting and gathering in many areas of the world, it's surmised that the human body slowly evolved to tolerate milk into adulthood, especially if it was fermented, such as in cheese or yogurt. Several thousand years later, it's believed that a genetic mutation spread through Europe that gave people the ability to produce lactase - the enzyme necessary to digest the lactose sugar in dairy - and drink milk. Many people who retain the ability to digest milk can trace their ancestry to Europe, according to a
group of scientists brought together to work on a multidisciplinary project called LeCHE (Lactase Persistence in the early Cultural History of Europe). There are other dairy pockets from West Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.
Dairy's present-day benefits Today we know that dairy is an important source of nutrients at all ages and stages of growth. Southeast United Dairy Industry Association, Inc. says that dairy is a great source of pro-

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that the calcium in dairy products is used for building bones and teeth and in maintaining bone mass. Diets with sufficient potassium may help to maintain healthy blood pressure. Additionally, vitamin D functions in the body to maintain ideal levels of calcium and phosphorous so that bones are built and maintained. The Australian Dietary Guidelines
say that consumption of milk, cheese and yogurt is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and colorectal cancer. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage children and adults to enjoy three servings of low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese or yogurt each day. Canada's Food Guide recommends between three and four servings for children in the preteen and teenage years and two to three servings for adults. Dairy can be a nutritious part of a healthy diet, and history suggests it has been for quite some time.

Exercise Continued from page 10 joining them. Team sports provide chances to exercise with friends, as do organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of America. But even inviting a child's friend along on a family hike or bike ride may make such activities more fun for kids. n Give gifts that encourage physical activity. Kids might want the latest device or video game for their birth-
days, but parents also can give gifts that encourage youngsters to be physically active. Bicycles, rollerblades, ice skates, and sports equipment are just a handful of potential gifts that may compel kids to exercise more. Childhood obesity is a significant problem, with the 2015-2016 NHANES reporting that 20.6 percent of youths between the ages of 12 and 19 were obese. Getting kids off the couch and exercising more often can help reduce those figures and ensure healthier futures for kids of all ages.

HEALTHY LIVING For many people, summertime is synonymous with trips to the beach, water sports and recreation. Even though summer warmth is a welcome break from winter weather for many people, State Farm warns that heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related fatalities, resulting in hundreds of deaths each year in the United States alone. Ensuring summer recreation plans remain enjoyable means keeping an eye out for heat-related illnesses and other dangers. n Hot cars can be traps. It is never safe to leave a pet, child, elderly person, or disabled individual locked in a car.
Temperatures can climb rapidly inside of a sealed vehicle, even if the windows are cracked. n Pay attention. Sun
symptoms become noticeable. Therefore, it is best for people of all ages to exercise caution when spending time in the sun. Sunburn is one of the most easily prevented summertime ailments. It's also important to note that sunburns are not just limited to the hot weather or when it is sunny outside. Ultraviolet damage can occur at any time of the year, and also from artificial UV sources, such as tanning beds. Preventing sunburn is simple. n The Mayo Clinic says the sun's rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so schedule outdoor activities for
other times of day. Otherwise, limit exposure to the sun and take frequent breaks in the shade. n Wear protective clothing that covers the arms and legs. Some outdoor gear is designed to offer sun protection. Tightly woven fabrics tend to help the most. n Apply - and reapply - sunscreen. Look for products that offer an SPF of 15 or greater. The American Academy of Dermatology actually recommends an SPF of 30 or greater. Make sure the product is broad-spectrum, meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen thoroughly, paying attention
to the tops of feet, hands and other places that tend to go untreated. Reapply every two hours or more frequently, if necessary. n Base tans do not protect the skin. Research does not support the habit of getting a tan to prevent subsequent sunburn. n Protect the face and eyes by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and highly rated UV protection sunglasses. The Skin Cancer Foundation says a person's risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns. Use protection, stay hydrated and play it smart to enjoy summer to the fullest.
Continued from page 9 ide, sunburn can be a first- or seconddegree burn. In first-degree burns, damage affects the topmost layer of skin. However, sunburn can even affect deeper layers and cause blistering in addition to redness and pain. Sunburn also can cause some irreparable damage that goes unseen. According to WebMD, ultraviolet light from the sun can alter DNA, prematurely aging skin or even contributing to skin cancers. It can take years before

Aaron Audet Band plays in Fair Haven June 28 Fair Haven Concerts in the Park welcomes a local band to the stage for the third concert. The Aaron Audet Band will be performing on Thursday, June 28 at 7 p.m. in the park. Audet and fellow band members Jeff Poremski on lead guitar, Chris Johnson on the electric bass, and Ross Edmunds on the drums, play a variety of cover songs. Audet said that they are very upbeat and play fun music to listen to and sing
along with, as well. This concert will once again feature free ice cream cones generously donated by Heritage Family Credit Union. Food items including hot dogs, popcorn and sodas are available for purchase each week. A very popular 50/50 raffle is also held each week. Many ask where the 50/50 monies are going. There are three different ways that the Concert Committee distributes these funds. Part of the money
goes to fund a scholarship for a Fair Haven Union High School graduate pursuing a major in music. The monies are also used to support the Dodge House in Rutland. The Dodge House provides housing and support for homeless veterans. Finally, some of the money is used to support the cost of the concerts. The intermission at each concert features a door prize drawing. Prizes are drawn for chil-
dren and adults. These prizes are donated by local sponsors and businesses. The platinum sponsors of the week include the Town of Fair Haven, Durfee Funeral Home, Lakes Region Radio, Eureka Lodge #75, Cam Development, Jet Service Envelope Company, Durkee Insurance, the First Congregational Church, American Legion Post #49, The Hughes Group Century 21 Premier Properties, J.S.
Laramie Roofing and Will’s Fair Haven Motors. Concerts go on rain or shine. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the Congregational Church at the north end of the park. The church is handicap accessible. Concert-goers can now call 802-265-3010 ext. 301 after 4 p.m. on Thursdays to see if the concert is outdoors or if a rain location is needed.
Summer concerts in Granville start next week By Krystle S. Morey Granville will kick off its summer concert season next Thursday with a psychedelic performance by Mellow Yellow. The five-member band is the first to play in Granville’s annual Summer Concert Series this year. Band members Brad DaddyO (David Cooper), Dusty Love (Linda Bassick), Kenny Diggit (Ken French), Apollonius “Flip” Funk (Brad Sourdiffe) and Franco Sunshine (Frank Zee) will perform a collection of Psychedelic Era music, from the late 60’s and early 70’s. “It’s going to be a great night,” said deputy village clerk Denise Davies.
Each Thursday evening from late June to the end of August, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Park, different acts will perform from the bandstand. Hit acts including New York Players, Mellow Yellow and Harold Ford & the Cash Band will bring 60’s and 70’s rock, R&B and country music to the park. Last year’s concerts drew 300-600 people each, said Davies. Daryl Magill will also return, but this year he’ll perform with the Sass and Brass band. The annual “Granville’s Taste of the Slate Valley” event is paired again this year with
Monarch Sheet Metal Shop Rake, Drip, Valleys and Flashing Pre-Bent and Ready - No Waiting Time • All Types of Custom Work • Sheets of galvanized, aluminum, stainless and copper
Magill’s concert, which is July 26. New this year, Blue Jay Way and TS Ensemble have been added to the roster. Rutland, Vermont-based Blue Jay Way will perform dance and party music from the 60’s to now. TS Ensemble, of Albany, covers the top hits from The Beatles, Santana, Chicago, and more. “It’s just a fun event for families and neighbors to enjoy, dance and catch up,” Davies
said. The concerts are free and there are often activities that run in tandem with the concerts, such as strawberry socials, free ice cream nights and chicken barbecues. Fireworks are planned for July 5. The Granville Town Band will play special concerts on select Sunday evenings throughout the summer. On Aug. 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. talented area musi-
cians will perform with marches and concert band specialties. “The park is beautiful and it’s a great venue,” Davies said. The summer concert series is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered locally by the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council and title sponsor, Great Meadow Federal Credit Union.
