Castleton completes office move The final leg of the Town of Castleton’s infrastructure project is now complete. After a new fire and police station was completed, the town offices, previously located at 1655 Main St. in rented modular units, were moved to the new Municipal Town Offices, just south of the public safety buildings at 263 Rte 30 N. In March 2016, Castleton voters approved moving the town offices to a more permanent location. The project began shortly after and took only 10 months to complete. The new 3,700 square foot location is owned by the town and has been open since May. Town Manager Mark Shea indicated that through the vision and goals of the Selectboard, this has been possible and “We’re very proud of this building” The new building houses several town departments in one building, helping with interconnectedness and functionality between various town offices. Accounting, Assessor, Emergency Preparedness, Health Officer, Tax Collection, Town Clerk, Town Manager, Treasurer, and Zoning Administrator all share the building. Most offices are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and contact information can be found at www.castletonvermont.org/departments .

FRIENDLY PEOPLE IN CASTLETON With A Tradition of Shopping Local The people of Castleton have had a reputation as being helpful and friendly since the American Revolution. Although, Fays Tavern in Bennington was known as the headquarters of the Green Mountain Boys, Zadok Remington’s Castleton Tavern was an outpost headquarters in early May of 1775. The Tavern was open to Ethan Allen and his small army of men where a Committee of War was organized to develop a campaign against Fort Ticonderoga. I am sure Mr. Remington provided plenty of “grog” and “flip” to bolster bravery of the Green Mountain Boys. Among the decision made by the Committee of War the soldiers would follow none other than Ethan Allen, regardless of the objections of Benedict Arnold, who apparently appeared at the Tavern. There was talk amongst the locals as to simply hanging Arnold or at least throwing him through the door and turning him back to where he came from. The Castleton soldiers and the other men who undertook the siege, were paid $2.00 a day, if they were to be paid at all. Ethan was concerned that Benedict Arnold had a commission of command while he had nothing, but the support of his men. After the siege, a good Castleton citizen and a member of the War Committee drew a battlefield commission giving command of the forces to Ethan, together with the plunder that included canons that would become valuable to the American fight. In May 1775, Castleton folks were already shopping local and were helpful in achieving one of the earliest victories of the American forces. My assistant Linda Way and I try to always shop local and offer the best possible representation, consultation and advice regarding legal issues and document preparation. The office is decorated with an ever changing collection of eclectic memorabilia from the past centuries. Our business equipment is state of the art leading to the greatest level of efficiency to assist client’s needs. My office offers expertise in probate practice, family law, real estate, civil law and personal injury. I am proud to live and work in Castleton and among the people who shop local.

Colonial Day Tour a favorite in August There’s plenty of history in this area, and that’s not lost on the members of the Castleton Women’s Club. Each and every year, during the month of August, members of the Castleton Women’s Club take the community on a trip back to the Colonial era. The event, known as the Castleton Colonial Day House Tour, has been a staple in the community for 79 years. According to the Woman’s Club’s website, “This annual self-guided tour features outstanding private homes and historic sites, exhibits of antique tools, carriages, a period clothing collection, displays and demonstrations of Early American crafts.” Many on the tour get dressed up in garb from the Colonial era, giving the event a true, authentic vibe. The tour includes 20 sites throughout the village of Castleton, from period homes and historical sites to public buildings and galleries. Perhaps the most popular location on the self-guided tour is the Castleton Federated Church building where
Every August the Castleton Women's Club brings back the Colonial era and holds house tours. visitors can see the beautifully carved pulpit. The pulpit at the Castleton Federated Church is often considered the architectural masterpiece of Thomas Royal Dake, a prominent builder of the
day. Dake’s influence doesn’t stop at the church, though. Many of the houses included on the tour have pieces of Dake’s architecture in them. Another prominent
building featured on the tour is the Higley House, which is a home base for the Castleton Historical Society. At the Higley House, tour-goers can look through displays including period fashion and accessories, quilts, antique tools and carriages. One of the most popular displays present at the Higley House is the Blue Cat Quilt, “a point of pride for the town and Historical Society.” The quilt depicts scenes from historic Castleton and the 1949 children’s novel, “The Blue Cat of Castle Town.” The novel, by Catherine Coblentz, tells the story of a blue kitten that goes around town, helping the people of Castelton with various problems. On the Barnes and Noble website, the novel receives a 5 out of 5 rating. This year’s event is set for Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tour tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors 62 years of age or older and free for kids age 12 and under. For more information on the event, call 802-468-5691 or email rileytjvt@comcast.net.

Castleton Village Farmers’ Market Thursdays 3:30-6:00 • June to October • Main Street, Castleton, VT Having fresh, locally sourced food isn’t hard with the Castleton Village Farmers Market, which offers such food and enables families to support local business. Each Thursday afternoon through Oct. 5 on Main Street, shoppers will be able to find a little a bit of everything – food, products and crafts, even some things you didn’t
know you needed. Some of the most popular items include fried dough, maple syrup, maple butter, maple candy, artisan bread and cheeses. Jelly, pickles, relish, meats, eggs, goat’s milk, raw honey, corn tomatoes. And what kind of farmer’s market would it be without assorted vegetables. Stepping out of the food section
you’ll find birdhouses, picnic tables, cutting boards, garden pick, various knitted things and even goodies for your favorite four-legged friend. There’s so much to do at the farmers market, which sometimes features live music and art displays. All are welcome to stop by and see all the Castleton Village Farmers Market has to offer.

Castleton Lions Club “Everything we raise goes back to the community.” This quote on the Castleton, Vermont Lions Club homepage is a statement that embodies the group’s mission: to help their community. The Lions Club International is the world’s largest service club organization, with 1.4 million members in 206 countries, so there’s always a helpful lion to take care of their community. Chartered on Nov. 7, 1947, the Castleton Vermont Lions Club was established to work with the needs of the community, and, after 70
years in Castleton, the lions have not lost their roar, still helping out with whatever is needed by hosting events each year. Every August got 58 years the Castleton Lions sponsor a “country” auction at the Castleton Village Green. The auction offers a wide variety of items, along with a food shack for hungry bidders and a raffle each night. This is the club’s biggest
fundraiser, with the proceeds going local projects such as hunter safety, holiday baskets, camps, scholarships, Green Up Day, kids’ fishing derbies, eye assistance program, hearing assistance program, school trips and Little League. The club also sponsors a popular four-part Ice Fishing Derby. The annual Lake Bomossen Ice Fishing Derby, the
Panorama OPEN YEAR ‘ROUND! Motel
third of the series, draws anglers from all over Vermont and New York. Think you can reel in the biggest fish? Try your hand. Proceeds go to different charities in Castleton such as school projects, Halloween parties, and many others projects and charities that the Lion Club is involved with and supports. Want to be a part of the Lions’ Den? Come to a meeting on the first and third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. from September to early June at the Track-In in Bomoseen, or visit castletonlions.org.

Castleton Free Library When someone says library, do you think book? If so, it’s time to tweak your associations. Like most public libraries today, Castleton Free is devoted to far more than collecting and lending books (although we are still bibliophiles). A more appropriate associative word would be connections – the library is a place to connect with neighbors serendipitously or at planned events; to connect to the virtual world of information and social networks via our public computers and wifi; to connect to compelling ideas and lifelong learning opportunities through on-line classes; and to tap creative energy through our large AV collection and diverse arts, humanities, and maker programs. And the “Free” part of our name emphasizes the democratic nature of our mission. Library resources and services are free to all. Rich, poor, reader, non-reader, young, old - we aim to reach across cultural, racial, political and gender divisions to connect with all community members.
The Castleton Free Library. The public library is the essence of the “third place” concept, where you can meet others outside of your home place and workplace, crossing paths with people you might otherwise never see. Your library card entitles you to borrow from our collection of over 20,000 items including books, DVD’s, audiobooks, musical CD’s, park/museum passes, kindles (loaded with novels), and magazines. Besides the usual fiction and non-fiction collections, sections and broadly represented genres include large print
Arts and crafts at Castleton Free Library.
books, young adult fiction, adult mysteries, local history, parenting, biographies, youth graphic books, juvenile fantasy and sci-fi, easyreaders, picture books, and baby board books. But your card’s borrowing power does not stop at our walls – we’re linked through free interlibrary loan to the other libraries in (and beyond) Vermont, and can usually get your requests filled within a few days. This system was recently completely overhauled, making it far easier for you to undertake searches and make requests on your own.
We’re glad to assist in the process. As a Castleton Free Library member, you also can download e-books and audiobooks through our two subscription programs, Listen-Up Vermont and Recorded Books’ OneClickDigital. And as a Vermonter, you can access the entire Vermont Online Library of informational databases and courses through Universal Class. Our summer programs are nearly over, but watch this paper for the fall lineup of guest speakers and events. In the meantime, drop in to Preschool Story Hour or Playgroup (both year-round) or call to join one of our two book discussion clubs. The library is located on Main Street in the historic village part of town, near the post office, Village School, and Castleton University entrance. We have street parking, as well as a small west-side lot with a designated van-accessible space. Our accessible entrance is via a hard-pack walkway on the north side, leading to our children’s room and multipurpose
Halloween happenings at Castleton Free Library.

The power of a good book.
Please visit us soon in person! We are an incorporated library, overseen by an active five-person Board of Trustees: Pam Arel, Dick Diehl, Tom Kearns (chairman), Nancy Mark, and Mary Waite. The library is run by two part-time librar-
ians (Director/children’s librarian Jan Jones and Adult services librarian Mary Kearns), and a group of dedicated volunteers. We all love meeting new people and welcome your ideas.
