Regarding boat themes, Lila Burgner, of the Lake St. Catherine Association said pre-

viously, “We’ve had some wonderful ones over the years.” These have included firefighters, an eagle, a golf cart, the Statue of Liberty, and even some luaus. “They’re very original, and very patriotic,” Burgner said. Last year’s winners were Jack McVicker, Kimberly Moore and friends who decorated their pontoon boat with a Beatles 50th Anniversary theme. Blaring music and rock stars with blow-up guitars were on board the “yellow submarine.”

Burgner said that winners of previous years usually return for the parade. There were about 28 boats in the parade last year. “We hope it’ll be successful, and that people enjoy it,” said Burgner. Contact Burgner at BurgnerL@msn.com or call 802-884-8093 to register and get a boat number. For more information, visit lakestcatherine.org/blog/register_your_boat_for_the_6th_ annual_boat_parade.

Public Notices

Fireworks display on lake July 7 The annual fireworks display presented by lake resident Rick Roberts will occur on the evening of Saturday, July 7. Fireworks will be set off from a barge on the east shore of Lake St. Catherine, near the rope swing. Previously, the display has been let off in the west, but Roberts said the east sky will make for a better show. “Getting the east sky is what we’re after,” Roberts said, noting the darker backdrop. Roberts said the show will be about the same size as the one the Village of Granville sets off each year to celebrate Independence Day. It will start at dusk. The show, which will last 20-25 minutes, will be accompanied by music. Brent Tuttle will play music from his boat at the end of Cone’s Point. People gather on the shore and anchor their boats out on the lake to view the show. “It’s been nice to see,” Roberts said. “It’s a good day for the lake.”

Enerjazz comes to Fair Haven Thursday Once upon a time the Lakes Region was visited by big bands that played local venues near and around the lakes. This harkens back to the time of those bands like Tommy Dorsey and Duke Ellington this coming week when our guests Fair Haven Concerts in the Park guests will be Enerjazz. These 18 talented musicians will bring the big band sound for our fourth concert on Thursday, July 5, beginning at 7 p.m. Concert-goers are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the lovely venue. Canal Fest set for July 6-7

WANT MORE NEWS?

By Matthew Saari

For a complete listing of regional events see our online calendar at:

Skenesborough Park will be the place to be next weekend. The annual Whitehall Canal Festival, now in its 35th year, will kick off at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 6. This staple of the Whitehall community marks the beginning of summer with a variety of activities for all ages. The event begins with the ever-popular Cake Booth, where festival-goers place a wager on their lucky number and a roulette wheel is spun – if Lady Luck is with you and it lands on your number, you win a cake. “We had a lot last year,” said Carol Greenough, member of the Canal Festival committee. “People were really enthusiastic.” Inside the picnic shelter, Skene Manor volunteers will be cooking up fried bread dough while other vendors will

be hawking other victuals as well as beverages to quench one’s thirst. “On both days there will be children’s games, cotton candy and popcorn too,” Greenough said. The food and games run until 9 p.m. on Friday. Live music will be provided at 7 p.m. by the Steel Pier Jazz Band, which is returning for the fourth consecutive year. Originally formed in the 1970s as “The Dixie Daddies,” the band performed on the Lake George cruise boats for many years. Although many of the members are retired, they still enjoy bringing their tunes to the area. On Saturday, the festival picks up at noon with a chicken barbecue and many of the same vendors and rides. Free horse and carriage rides will be at 4:30 p.m. The route usually heads towards the end of Main

Street and back to the park. Local music sensation the PJ Ferguson Trio takes to the amphitheater stage at 7:30 p.m. PJ Trio plays a wide variety of cover songs from the 1950’s to today. Following PJ Ferguson Trio performance, at 9:30 p.m., the night sky will be lit with brilliant fireworks. “People come from long distances to see the fireworks,” Greenough said. Every year the centerpiece of the display is a stationary American Flag. Greenough said this is always dedicated to John Molinero, who for years supplied the funds for the American Flag firework display. When Canal Fest ends, it doesn’t mean the show doesn’t go on. Bands will be taking to the bandstand in Riverside Veterans Memorial Park every Friday through Aug. 17.

Inaugural Chili cook-off in Fair Haven tonight Bring your appetite, bib and possibly a glass of milk to Fair Haven for the first annual Chili Cook-Off tonight. The contest is free to join so if you think your chili is championship quality, cook up a pot and bring it to the contest. “We’ve never put one of these on; we’ll see how this goes,” said town manager Joe Gunter with a chuckle. “Just come on down, bring a table and pot of chili.” Each pot of chili will be numbered, with samples being provided to tasters who will then cast a vote for their favorite. “It’s a popularity contest,”

Gunter said, adding that as of press time five contestants, consisting of local shops and residents, have committed to concocting pots of chili for competition. Although one contestant is his wife, Gunter said he doesn’t have a favorite and it is anyone’s guess who will win a “fabulous prize.” “I’m staying unbiased,” he said. The “fabulous prize” is a two-night stay at Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid, which Gunter said carries with it a price tag of “upwards of $500.” The 2018 Chili Cook-Off is part of Fair Haven Fridays, events held in downtown Fair

Haven every Friday night from 5 to 7 p.m. All events are free to attend. Gunter said these events were born from a community attempt at highlighting the local flavor – pun intended – of Fair Haven. “The businesses downtown have been drumming up ideas on how to bring people to Fair Haven,” he said. The 2018 Chili Cook-Off will be held in downtown Fair Haven across from Carl Durfee’s Store on Main Street. Just look for the tables and pots of chili. “You’ll see us,” Gunter said.

Firefighters will describe and demonstrate common firefighting equipment including breathing apparatus as well as the operation of fire trucks. The event will feature a Fire Safety

32 - Friday, June 29, 2018 - The Lakes Region FreePress

Poultney Continued from front page will be a bevy of events held throughout the day, from morning till evening. Beginning at 8 a.m. a pancake breakfast will be held at the Methodist Church on Main Street. Then at 9:45 a.m. magician Tom Joyce will wow crowds on the green at LiHigh/ Depot Park on Main Street. At 10 a.m. Poultney’s July 4 parade will step off from East Main Street, travelling to Main Street then onto College Street.

Every year the Poultney July 4 parade has a theme, with this year’s being “Dream Big.” Each year’s theme brings new participants along with the regular crowd favorites including first responders and community organizations that make the Lakes Region so special. Another magic show will be held after the parade at noon courtesy of magician Blaine Good. A number of field events will also be held after the parade at the Poultney Elementary School with food vendors providing a variety of victuals.

The No Strings Marionette Company will perform two marionette shows during the afternoon hours. At 1 p.m. the company will perform a rendition of Jack and the Beanstalk then at 5 p.m. a rendition of Handsome and Gretel will be performed. The evening winds down with a dance party courtesy of DJ John Saltis before a brilliant fireworks display at dusk. The show is free however donations will gladly be accepted at the gate. For more information visit www.poultneyrecreation.com.

Hildene hosts special event July 4 At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4, Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home, will host a communal reading of Frederick Douglass’s fiery 1852 speech, “The Meaning of the Fourth of July to the Negro.” The shared reading will be followed by a discussion led by Hildene President, Seth Bongartz, and light refreshments. The program is free and members of the community are invited to take part in the communal reading. On July 5, 1852, Douglass, a former slave and leading abolitionist, begged the “race question” at an event in Rochester, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “Fellow-citizens,” he said. “Why am I called upon to speak here to-day? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Do you mean, citizens, to mock me, by asking me to speak to-day? What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July?”
