Fireworks Saturday The annual fireworks display presented by lake resident Rick Roberts will occur on the evening of Saturday, July 7. Fireworks will be set off from a barge on the east shore of Lake St. Catherine, near the rope swing. Spectators are welcome to view the show from the shore or the water. Previously, the display has been let off in the west, but Roberts said the east sky will make for a better show. “Getting the east sky is what we’re after,” Roberts said, noting the darker backdrop.

Roberts said the show will be about the same size as the one the Village of Granville sets off each year to celebrate Independence Day. It will start at dusk. The show, which will last 20-25 minutes, will be accompanied by music. Brent Tuttle will play music from his boat at the end of Cone’s Point. People gather on the shore and anchor their boats out on the lake to view the show. “It’s been nice to see,” Roberts said. “It’s a good day for the lake.”

Outdoor yoga to start July 11 Slate Valley Museum is excited that this summer they will again partner again with Studio G Yoga owner Nicole Kroosz to offer Gentle Yoga on Wednesdays starting July 11 and continuing through Aug. 29 from 6:15-7:15 p.m. The classes will be held outdoors in SVM’s backyard with the beautiful Mettawee River as a backdrop. Classes are $10 per session or $8 in advance. “We are delighted to host our second summer of outdoor yoga. We had a great group of yogis and beginners last year that really made it a special experience,” said Krista Rupe, executive director of SVM. Gentle Yoga is a great introduction to yoga moving through seated, kneeling and balancing poses. It offers foundational poses and a softer practice, great for beginners or those with limitations to explore movement and flexibility. For more information visit Studio G Yoga’s Facebook page current class information.

The annual Fun Fly event is set for July 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fair Haven Municipal Airport.

St. John’s Episcopal Church honors Welsh Heritage Join St. John’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 14 for a special service to honor the contributions of the Welsh immigrants who played an important part in the history of the area. The service will begin at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Route 140, East Poultney. The service will feature scripture readings spoken in the Welsh language by Nia Davies Demiray. Davies Demiray is Vice President of the Poultney Area St. David’s Society and a native of Aberystwyth, Wales. The service will feature Dr. James Cassarino, Director of the Vocal, Instrumental and Welsh Heritage programs at Green Mountain College, on the original mechanical organ. Light refreshments and fellowship will be offered. Following the services

guests are invited to continue celebrating the Welsh heritage by joining the Poultney Area St. David’s Society for an evening of entertainment with Welsh descendant and author Dave Davies. The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Iron Lantern Restaurant, Castleton. Davies is the author of “What a Line! Highlighting 50 Years of Adventure, Artistry, Wit and Wisdom” and will share excerpts from his book, and life, at the dinner. All are welcome. Prepaid dinner reservations are required and can be secured by calling the Poultney Area St. David’s Society at 802-287-5744. St. John’s Episcopal Church, which held its first service on May 27, 1832, sits on the historic village green in East Poultney. St. John’s held regular Sunday services

until 1931. In 2013, a group of concerned citizens took on the task of caring for this virtually untouched structure. The church features the original box-style pews, stenciled walls, oil lamps and a remarkable, intact mechanical organ, one of four remaining organs manufactured by the Nutting Organ Company of Vermont. The church has no plumbing facilities, no furnace, and no electricity. Recent restoration efforts have included repair of the church roof and steeple and a complete reconstruction of the front stairs, all under the guidance of a restoration architect. For more information, please contact Reverend William Davidson of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Wells, Vermont by calling 518-4991850.

Summer reading program Avast, me hearties! The July 4 fireworks may be over, but summer fun is just beginning. Come rock the boat with Rockin’ Ron the Friendly Pirate as he kicks off the “Libraries Rock” Summer Reading Program season at Castleton Free Library. Rockin’ Ron will be at the library located on Main Street, Castleton, on Saturday, July 7 at 6:30 p.m. to share swashbuckling music with kids of all ages and adult pirates. He describes his style as “Sesame Street meets Monty Python.” Performing most often at Smugglers’ Notch Resort (entertaining families who come to Friendly Pirate Dinners and Breakfasts) Rockin’ Ron also sings nautical tunes throughout northeastern North America at schools, libraries, bookstores, museums, hospitals, parties and festivals, and has recorded three albums. He’s a friendly pirate with an edge. Are you’re wondering about pirates near landlubbing Castleton? If so, come listen to “Black Snake Tale,” the true story of pirates on Lake Champlain. There will also be a great selection of pirate books and DVD’s ready for you to borrow, as well as many other items with nautical themes. Kids going into 4th-8th grade may be interested to know that

Rockin’ Ron sings a song about Black Sam Bellamy, the very same pirate featured in one of the titles on the 18-19 Dorothy Canfield Fisher reading list. Feel free to dress and talk like a pirate, and please spread the word - it’s a free pirate p-arrrty. The library will have more music coming on Wednesday July 18, this time in the form of a play. Summer Encore will present “In Search of a Song” at 7 p.m. on the library lawn (inside if it rains). This troupe, in its 21st year, is comprised of students in grades 7-12 who developed a play, under the direction of Cathy Archer, to fit the summer reading theme, “A child hears music everywhere she goes.” The rocks, the birds, the frogs, even the trees, all have songs. She longs to have a song of her very own. But every time she opens her mouth to sing, either nothing, or awful sounds come out. Finally she goes on a quest to find her song. Who will she meet on her journey? Will she find her own song? What will it sound like? This will be an audience participation piece in which the audience will help the hero. There will be keepsakes to take home afterward. For more information call Jan at 802-468-5574 or email castletonfreelibrary@gmail.com.

‘Bald Eagles’ win annual boat parade By Krystle S. Morey Thirteen boats went on parade on Lake St. Catherine last Sunday for the Lake St. Catherine Association’s sixth annual boat parade. Lake residents and visitors decked their boats with American, bald eagle, Viking and other themes for a chance to win a series of prizes, donated by local businesses including Perry’s Main Street Eatery, the Wells Country Store, Stewart’s Shops and Full Belly Deli. Spectators cheered from the water and the shore as the decorated vessels made their way around the perimeter of the lake. Boaters traveled up the west side of the lake and down the east side, past three judging stations that ranked the boats on a scale of 1-10. Decorated boats were judged in four categories: Most original, most patriotic, funniest, and best overall. This year’s overall winner was the Pofit family’s “Lake St. Catherine Welcomes Back The ‘Bald’ Eagles” boat. The Pafit’s vessel was decorated with pine trees and other nature-themed elements, while its occupants wore eagle costumes. Second place overall went to the Goldman family, who decorated their pontoon boat with a Viking theme. The Goldmans’ boat had shields, a hoisted flag and they dressed for the part, wearing horned caps. The Tardie family won the most patriotic award. Their pontoon boat sported several flags and riders were dressed in red, white and blue hats and attire. The Higgins family won second place in the patriotic category.

The funniest boat award went to the Fitzsimmons family’s “Every day is a holiday at Lake St. Catherine” boat. A banner decorated the outside of the pontoon boat, while occupants wore bikinis, boas and mismatch party apparel. Second funniest was the Wendell family’s “May the 4th be with you Jedi” boat. The Conine family’s “Rowing Vikings” won the most original award for their speedboat, which was decked out with shields, a mast and oars. Occupants wore horned helmets, fake beards and wielded foam weapons. The Roth family’s “May the 4th be with you” boat won second place in the most original category.

The Pofit family’s “Lake St. Catherine Welcomes Back The ‘Bald’ Eagles” boat won first place overall.

The Tardie family won the most patriotic award.
