Church to honor Welsh immigrants Join St. John’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 14 for a special service to honor the contributions of the Welsh immigrants who played an important part in the history of the area.

Fun Fly Saturday Free event features

model aviators from all over New York, New England

By Matthew Saari The skies over Fair Haven are going to be buzzing with activity as the Rutland County RC Flyers host their annual Fun Fly on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the former Fair Haven Airport.

Dozens of pilots are expected to attend, bringing with them a dizzying array of remote-controlled aircraft which will soar, barrel roll and scream through the skies for public enjoyment, free of charge.

“We have pilots planning to visit from all over New England as well as some from Canada,” said Pete Galligan, a seven-year member of RC Flyers. “It’s what we call a celebration of model aviation.”

Auto show, flea market this weekend

By Darren Marcy The Rutland Car Show and Auto Flea Market makes its 39th appearance at the Vermont State Fairgrounds in Rutland this weekend.

The show runs July 14-15 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Vehicle owners can register for $20, which includes entrance for two people for both days. Spectators pay $5. Kids younger than 12 enter free.

Formerly known as the RAVE

Car Show, named after the Rutland Area Vehicle Enthusiasts car club that puts on the event, this year’s show was renamed to connect better with the Rutland community.

Sean Barrett, president of RAVE, said the mix of vehicles exhibited at the show is diverse with plenty of street rods and muscle cars from the 1960s and ‘70s as well as, increasingly, the 1980s.

Area military veterans are invited to gather on Sunday, July 15, at the American Legion Post 50, Route 4A, Castleton, Vermont, for a “VET to VET” forum from 2 to 4 p.m.

This will be the first in a series of “VET to VET” forums presented by LTC Terry Williams, U.S. Army, Retired, of Poultney.

Having served for more than 35 in the military, Williams knows that transitioning home is not always easy for the veteran.

The purpose of the series is to provide an informational exchange between military veterans, their families and friends. Each forum panel will consist of either retired or active-duty military persons who have information, a story to tell or a hand to lend.

During this period, users of the municipal water system may experience fluctuations or partial loss of water pressure, and the water may become cloudy or rust-colored. These conditions are normal, and allowing the water to run for a period of time before use will often remedy the problem.

In particular, commercial establishments using water for public consumption, and those with automatic sprinkler/alarm systems that respond to reductions in system pressure, are advised to make the necessary arrangements to compensate for this period of disturbance to the water system.

Last year Mike Peque, of the Barre region, won Best in Show with his jet, which weighs 53 pounds, has a 10-foot wing span and travels as “just under 200 miles per hour.”

“Last year the jet stole the show,” said Galligan.

“Those are mostly World War I and World War II scale model aircraft,” Galligan said.

Following the show, the public will be allowed into the fly zone for an up-close look at the aircraft and to speak with the pilots. The public can also vote for Best in Show.

After some time the public will be escorted out of the fly zone and “open flying” will recommence until 4 p.m.

The Fun Fly will also host a cash concession offering freshcooked food such as hot dogs, hamburgers, fries and salads as well as beverages. Bathroom facilities will be accessible throughout the day.

“We do recommend if you bring family also bring something to sit on and bug spray,” said Galligan.

The RC Flyers were founded in the early 1970’s and is a chartered club associated with the Academy of Model Aeronautics. The founding coincided with a surge of public interest in the hobby. In recent years the hobby has seen a resurgence of interest, thanks largely to the multirotor aircraft – drones – being made available to the public.

“People found out hey, these things are pretty easy to fly,” Galligan said. “But it’s important to remember that model aircraft, no matter what type, must follow strict safety rules.”

The Fair Haven Airport is located at 870 Airport Rd. Take Exit 2 off Route 4 and follow the posted signs to Airport Road. Continue on that road until the airfield.

Town of Fair Haven NOTICE OF ORDINANCE ADOPTION The Town of Fair Haven amended its Traffic Control Ordinance at a regularly scheduled meeting on July 3rd, 2018.

The Board amended Article 16 to define the school zone as: 1,000 feet north and south of the school on both the east and west side of Main St. The Board also amended Section 5 of the same article making it unlawful to park for more than 2 hours in the school zone where posted. Furthermore; It amended the same section to make it unlawful to park for more than 15 minutes in the school zone where posted.

The ordinance shall become effective 60 days after its adoption unless a petition is signed by at least five percent of the voters of Fair Haven requesting voter approval as provided in 24 V.S.A. 1974 and is received by the Town Clerk within 45 days following the adoption.

Local swimming spots to beat the heat There’s nothing more refreshing on a steamy summer’s day than a dip in a cool mountain lake. Fortunately, in this region lakes both large and small abound, with several lakeside beaches just a short drive away.

Here are some great options for a refreshing getaway when the mercury rises:

Lake St. Catherine State Park Poultney Lake St. Catherine State Park features 117 acres with a beautiful beach near the northern end of the lake. The beach offers a large sanded area for relaxing and roped-off swimming area. The park rents canoes, kayaks, rowboats and pedal boats, has a concession stand and picnic area with charcoal grills, large field, basketball court and giant pines that provide respite from the sun.

The park is on Route 30 and is open daily from 10 a.m. to sunset from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There is a small fee to enter the state-run park. Pets are permitted outside the dayuse area.

Crystal Beach Lake Bomoseen This town park on the shores of Lake Bomoseen offers swimming, basketball and volleyball courts, grills and an outside covered pavilion for picnics as well as a snack bar and roped swimming area. The park opens Memorial Day weekend. Kayaks are available for rental. Entrance fee is $4, $2 for children and seniors. Swim lessons will be offered at Crystal Beach from June 26-July 7 with Gail McGann.

Half Moon Pond State Park Hubbardton This park, which was previously selected as Vermont State Park of the Year, features two small sandy beaches for sunbathing and swimming in the pond. As motor boats are not permitted on the lake, beachgoers can enjoy a quiet day.

Rowboats, kayaks, canoes and pedal boats are available for rent, and hiking trails surround the water. This is a camping-only park and day-use opportunities are not available.

Bomoseen State Park Castleton Within a 3,575-acre park, the beach at Bomoseen State Park boasts that it is on the largest lake contained entirely within Vermont. Besides swimming, the beach offers a picnic area, concession stand, pavilion (for rent), and canoe, kayak, row and pedal boat rentals.

The park is at 22 Cedar Mountain Road and is open daily from 10 a.m. to sunset from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. There is a small fee to enter the park.

Family bike ride July 18 Blue Jay Way comes to Fair Haven July 19 Slate Valley Trails’ Tim Johnson is leading a Family Fun Bike Ride beginning at 7 p.m. at the Poultney Public Library.

This ride is for adults and children ages seven and up.

Riders less than 10 years old should be accompanied by an adult. Please be sure to bring a helmet.

Bikes as well as helmets are available at the Poultney Public

Library. Please be sure to arrive early if you require one or the other as the library closes at 7 p.m. sharp.

Bikers will be exploring Poultney on the rail trail, dirt paths and some paved streets.

Boater’s body recovered from lake The body of a 61-year-old Schenectady man who fell from his boat into Lake St. Catherine last week has been recovered.

Thomas Flood, 61, and his wife were staying at a family camp on the lake in Poultney, Vermont, and the couple was attempting to step out of the boat to sit on inner tubes tethered to the vessel when Flood fell into the water.

When he did not emerge immediately, his wife contacted police and emergency crews were dispatched at about 3:20 p.m. last Thursday.

A search by first-response agencies, including divers from two New York teams using sonar, was unsuccessful in locating Flood and the effort was suspended at about

7:30 p.m. It resumed at 8 a.m. on Friday.

That afternoon, Vermont State Police Dive Team members located Flood’s body in 50 feet of water using sonar to view the lake’s floor.

Investigation revealed Flood was not wearing a flotation device. Conditions on the lake were windy, and the water was choppy.

The Floods were the only people aboard the boat.

Responding agencies included Vermont State Police, the Poultney Fire Department and the Wells Fire Department, Corinth Fire Department Dive Team, the South Glens Falls Dive Team and the Washington County Department of Public Safety.

The Fair Haven Concerts in the Park will feature Rock & Roll with Blue Jay Way on Thursday, July 19.

This band is making their second visit to the Fair Haven Park. Blue Jay Way began in the early 1970’s when Dave Sabatino and Tim Brown began to perform locally at the Checkmate in Castleton.

Mars astromony night in Hubbardton It’s time to take a close look at the planet Mars, which is at its best for viewing in mid to late July as it approaches the earth.

Come to the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site in Hubbardton, on Saturday, July 14, from 7-11 p.m. for Mars Astronomy Night. Admission is by donation.

Members of the Green Mountain Astronomers bring their telescopes and their knowledge to share with you.

First look at the sun before it sets, with Vermont’s largest commercially made telescope

dedicated to solar astronomy.

Then enjoy the night sky, including Mars.

Bring a flashlight and if you like blankets or lawn chairs and your own binoculars or telescopes. The Hubbardton Battlefield is a perfect spot to observe the night sky, with little modern light pollution and a sweeping open sky. The program is dependent on weather and sky conditions. Call ahead, at 802-273-2282, to confirm the program is on.

The battlefield is the site of the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Vermont. It is

located in Hubbardton on Monument Hill Road, seven miles north of U.S. Route 4 from Castleton or six miles east of Vermont Route 30 in Hubbardton.

The site is regularly open Wednesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last regular day of the season is Oct. 14.

Regular admission is $3 for adults and free for children under 15.

Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein turns 200 this year, and to celebrate, Dorset Village Library is hosting a Frankenstein movie night.

The late Theresa O. Turner held several active spots in the area’s business and community-at-large for many years. Her business entrepreneurship

included a bakery in Fair Haven and in Poultney a flower shop as well as her long-time food establishment – TOT’s restaurant.

At TOT’s, Turner hosted many community groups for their meetings and gatherings including, but not limited to, Poultney Rotary International, Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce and Poultney Area St. David’s Society.

She always took great pride in her businesses and the local community and offered great seasonal displays in her storefront windows. She is known to have funded and maintained the flower barrels in front of her business as a way to help beautify Main Street.

Turner’s dedication was tireless to St. Raphael’s, to

American Legion Post 39, to the Rotary and Chamber, to elementary, high school and college student programs, and to many organizations through a variety of dinners and fundraisers she spearheaded. She held high values and always strived to achieve her goals.

Turner took great pride in her businesses and customer service. Those who dined often at her food establishment knew she would usually almost have their meals ready before they sat down.

“One of the crazier cars we’ve seen in recent years was a green AMC Pacer with a very healthy supercharged motor,” Barrett said. “It was set up like drag car with wheelie bars.”

Barrett said the Pacer was expected back again this year.

Also this year, the show is featuring Chevrolet trucks to honor the 100th anniversary of the first Chevy trucks to roll off the assembly line.

Fans can get a sneak peek Friday night as about two dozen show cars belonging to RAVE members will be on display in conjunction with Friday Night Live. The cars will be lined up one block over on Washington Street from 6-8 p.m.

But Friday night is just a taste of what’s to come Saturday and Sunday when an estimated 200 vehicles should be on hand. Since RAVE held its first car show in 1980, it has,

at times, drawn as many as 400 exhibitors, but that number has fallen off as more shows crowded the regional schedule.

“Last year, there were more than 200 registered vehicles,” Barrett said. “If the weather holds there isn’t any reason we can’t match that if not beat that number.”

Attendees will have the chance to vote on their favorites among the hundreds of cars, trucks, motorcycles and other classics, restored and customized vehicles with the winners taking home a trophy.

In addition, students on the First Robotics team from Stafford Technical Center will be showing off robotics projects they’ve been working on. The demonstrations will go on Saturday and Sunday.

There will be food, games, product displays and flea market vendors.

Money raised from the two-day event will benefit eight different charities that RAVE has chosen to help this year. In the 38 years the car show has been held, RAVE has donated more than $175,000 to charities in the area.
