Wells celebrates with Variety Day, town-wide yard sales By Darren Marcy The quiet town of Wells will be hopping on Saturday, July 21, when the 38th annual Wells Variety Day teams up with townwide yard sales to offer a full day of bargain-hunting and entertainment. Yard sales will be scattered throughout the town with the Wells Volunteer Fire Department hosting a huge tag sale at the firehouse. The town-wide yard sale began four years ago when the variety days celebration was taken over by the Modern Woodman of America and moved it to its spacious site at 10 Main St. With more space and volunteer availability, the MWA wanted to keep the tradition alive and sup-
port a long-standing local event, said Andrea Rathbun, vice president of MWA. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Karen Stomski, who is in charge of reservations for vendor tables for variety days, said there was a diverse assortment of vendors registered, including flea market items, arts and crafts, collectibles and antiques, as well as commercial vendors selling popular brands of merchandise. Other highlights include the Lewis Sugar House offering maple products, a henna tattoos booth, and a Lake St. Catherine information booth. The Poultney High School varsity cheerleaders will be raising money at the event as well.

Free tasting event July 26 Granville area businesses will line the perimeter of Veterans Memorial Park next Thursday, offering free samples of cookies, ice cream, coffee, jerky and more. Held annually in conjunction with the village’s summer concert series in the park, Granville’s Taste of the Slate Valley event is in its third year. “It’s a free night … free samples and free music,” said Teresa Loomis, organizer. Starting at 6 p.m. on July 26, about 15 vendors including Chapman’s General Store and Muddy Trail Jerky Co. will serve free food and drink samples to concert attendees. Daryl Magill and Sass and Brass will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. “There will be baked goods, mac n’ cheese, sandwiches, cupcakes, pastries … all of that good stuff,” Loomis said.
New this year, Loomis expanded the invite to eateries outside Granville. The Kinder Way Café in Fair Haven and Wells Country Store and Otto’s Cones Point General Store in Wells are a few. “We have a nice turnout with Granville, but I wanted to offer more,” Loomis said. “Also, it’s another way of keeping money in our region, instead of going to Saratoga or other places,” she said. Loomis said the tasting event pairs well with the summer concerts, especially when Magill is performing. “All of the kids are around and it’s a big family night,” she said. “Everybody loves it. By the end of the night, all of the vendors are happy … and everybody has a full belly.” For more information or for vendor sign-up, contact Denise Davies at 518-642-2640.

Books Continued from front page and has run the book sale for the past two years. Seamans said the sale started out small more than a halfcentury ago and it remained small for a while. But the sale took on a whole new dimension when Dolores Luebke expanded the scope to turn the small book sale into more of an event. “It started out small in the church basement and for a lot of years it was more of a fundraiser for the library,” Seamans said. “It just got bigger. Dolores made it very large, the way it is now.” Seamans said Luebke started contacting estate sales and other libraries and grew the number of book donations. They added book signings, raffles, auctions, food and the event turned into a two-day affair that now offers as many as 20,000 books each year. “It’s just flabbergasting to see the amount of books,” Seamans said. “It’s an amazing experience.”
Seamans said the books are collected all year and stored and sorted off-site. Wednesday the books are hauled in a truck and trailer convoy to the Mettawee Community School, where the event is held. Volunteers spend the day Thursday sorting and organizing the books into attractive displays on the tables. Mettawee’s sixth-graders volunteer for the event as do the Boy Scouts and other groups. The volunteers are fed lunch, but one of the top prizes for their volunteer effort is getting the first crack at the books. “Whoever helps, gets first dibs on the books,” Seamans said. “Pick out what you want.” More volunteers are always welcome. Just show up at 9 a.m. or after on Thursday, July 26. And that kind of access can pay off. Seamans said there is always a line of people waiting for the sale to open. “When the doors open, people are lined up outside, it’s pretty wild,” Seamans said.
“They come rushing in. When there are 50 to 75 people lined up waiting to get in at 9 a.m. you know it’s a good sale.” To show the scale of the book sale, Seamans said there are sometimes as many as 15 cashiers handling check out. In addition to books, there will be food including hamburgers and hotdogs, a silent auction and raffle, and a bake sale and vegetable stand. “Local community members donate vegetables,” Seamans said. It’s also a social event. Not only for the thousands of people who come through the door but for the volunteers, many of whom have been returning for years. “It really brings people together,” Seamans said. “Often you don’t see people all year and then you get to see them there and catch up on their lives.” Book prices are affordable with 20 cent paperbacks, $1 trade paperbacks, and $2 hardcovers. Credit cards are accepted. For more information, pawletpub@gmail.com or 802325-3123.
Lake St. Catherine Association to hold meeting The Lake St. Catherine Association will hold its annual membership meeting and dinner Saturday. trustees. Three guest speakers will make brief presentations including: Kara Sliwoski, of SOLitude Lake Management, on milfoil and milfoil control; Sadie Brown, of the Poultney Mettowee Natural Resources Conservation District, on Lake Wise and storm water master planning; and Bill Alexander, of Slate Valley Trails, on bicycle and foot trails in the Slate Valley Region.

Theresa O. Turner (TOT’s) memorial ceremony July 22 By Janice B. Edwards, Freelance Writer Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce extends invitation to the community to join them for the Theresa O. Turner Memorial Ceremony. The ceremony will be held Sunday, July 22 at 1 p.m. outside the former TOT’s Diner, 25 Main St., Poultney. Father Lourduraja Simeone, H.G.N., Deacon Myers and the choir of St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church will participate in the ceremony as will Jonas Rosenthal, retired Poultney Town Manager. The late Theresa O. Turner held several active spots in the area’s business and community-at-large for many years. Her
business entrepreneurship included a bakery in Fair Haven and in Poultney a flower shop as well as her long-time food establishment – TOT’s restaurant. At TOT’s, Turner hosted many community groups for their meetings and gatherings including, but not limited to, Poultney Rotary International, Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce and Poultney Area St. David’s Society. She always took great pride in her businesses and the local community and offered great seasonal displays in her storefront windows. She is known to have funded and maintained the flower barrels in front of her business as a way to help beautify
Main Street. Turner’s dedication was tireless to St. Raphael’s, to American Legion Post 39, to the Rotary and Chamber, to elementary, high school and college student programs, and to many organizations through a variety of dinners and fundraisers she spearheaded. She held high values and always strived to achieve her goals. Turner took great pride in her businesses and customer service. Those who dined often at her food establishment knew she would usually almost have their meals ready before they sat down. For more information about this event, please contact Brenda Cyr at 802-353-1733.

Sailing camp for kids starts in August From Aug. 6-10, Castleton Recreation will be running its first-ever sailing camp at Crystal Beach on Lake Bomoseen. With help from other volunteers, Joe Mark will be teaching 5th-8th graders how to sail safely, with lots of time spent on the water. Participants will learn nautical terminology, knot tying, and sailing’s “rules of the road” while developing their boat handling skills and practicing capsizing and recovery drills. Along with introducing area youth to the joys of sail-powered boats, the long-term goal of the program is to start an annual summer racing program at Crystal Beach. Many people have helped make this program possible. Participants will be learning the art and science of sailing through the use of donated Sunfish. Over the past year, the following kind folks donated their boats so that local youth can learn to sail: Pete Bethge, John Caravello, Katharine Clancy, Kenneth Dandeneau, Tom Ellis, Carmen Fallar, Del and Sue Herrick, Mike

Castleton Free Library News Our kids’ Summer Reading Program at Castleton Free Library continues with two special events in the coming weeks. This Monday, July 23, we’ll be taking the “Libraries Rock!” theme on the road with a tour of the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in nearby West Rutland. While this site is only seven and a half miles east of our library, located on top of historic marble quarries, many local residents have never visited and are unaware of their programs and exhibitions drawing artists from around the country and world. The evening will feature a kidfriendly tour of the quarries, the post-industrial remnants, the sculpture garden, and the indoor gallery, including stories about the history of the place as well as its transformation into a hub of creativity. This event is free and open
And the lucky winners are....
to all ages with adult supervision, but participants must provide their own transportation to the venue. Anyone wishing to caravan to the site should meet at Castleton Free Library at 6:30 p.m. We’ll gather in the parking lot of the Carving Studio at 6:50 p.m., meeting up with anyone who wishes to drive directly there. The Carving Studio is located at 636 Marble St. in West Rutland. If bad weather threatens, we will reschedule and hold an alternative reading program at the library, so please call 802-4685574 or check our Facebook page if you are uncertain. Children who have been coming to “Libraries Rock!” programs know that we’re offering rock collections as reading incentives - for every three books your child reads (a big book counts double), they may choose a geological sample to add to their collection. There
will be samples at the quarry as well. Please mark your calendars now for our CLiF Summer Readers Storytelling event. On Thursday Aug. 2 from 3:30-4:30 p.m., Marv Klassen-Landis will visit Castleton Free Library for a storytelling event and free book giveaway where each child in attendance selects two brand new books to take home. CLiF’s Summer Readers grant supports summer programs across Vermont and New Hampshire to keep reading a part of children’s lives during the school vacation. The Children’s Literacy Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire a love of reading and writing among children up to age 12 in every region of the Twin States. Since 1998, CLiF has served more than 180,000 lowincome, at-risk, and rural children in 400 communities.
