er; the past few years we’ve had 85 to about 130 entries,” Fowler said. “Vehicles come from throughout the region.” The weather for Saturday is looking positive so far. The forecast is calling for temperatures near 80 degrees with a slight chance of showers.

Pawlet Library hosting Washington County Band The Pawlet Public Library, with additional sponsorship from the businesses of Pawlet, will present the Washington County Band in an outdoor concert on the library lawn on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 7-9 p.m. In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Pawlet Town Hall Auditorium across the street from the library. Concert goers supply their own lawn chairs and blankets. Admission is free. More than 40 talented musicians from New York and Vermont play at various venues during the summer months. Under the direction of Paul Kafer, each concert is different to encourage followers to attend all the band’s con-
certs in the local area. The group performs popular songs of different styles of music like show tunes, jazz and American classics. The volunteer band was organized about 40 years ago, and it recruits younger musicians to join the seasoned musicians who take on a mentorship role. Currently, the ages of the band members range from 16 to 86. The Pawlet Public Library is housed in a renovated and accessible historic grammar school building, located at 141 School St. in Pawlet. For the full schedule of 2018 public programs, visit www.pawletpubliclibrary.wordpress.com or call 802-325-3123.
Continued from front page more than a half-century ago and it remained small for a while. But the sale took on a whole new dimension when Dolores Luebke expanded the scope to turn the small book sale into more of an event. “It started out small in the church basement and for a lot of years it was more of a fundraiser for the library,” Seamans said. “It just got bigger. Dolores made it very large, the way it is now.” Seamans said Luebke started contacting estate sales and other libraries and grew the number of book donations. They added book signings, raffles, auctions, food and the event turned into a two-day affair that now offers as many as 20,000 books each year. “It’s just flabbergasting to see the amount of books,” Seamans said. “It’s an amazing experience.”
Cars Continued from front page Fowler said there is a wide range of entries with cars from the 1930s and ’40s, as well as hotrods from the 60s, 70s and more recent vintages. “Last year there was an old Saab sedan with a two-cycle, three-cylinder engine,” Fowler said. “And there was a mid-60s Pontiac Grand Prix. What a beautiful car.” Fowler said there is usually a selection of Corvettes, Thunderbirds, GTOs and other popular cars. “I don’t think anybody who

Seamans said the books are collected all year and stored and sorted off-site. Wednesday the books are hauled in a truck and trailer convoy to the Mettawee Community School, where the event is held. Volunteers spend the day Thursday sorting and organizing the books into attractive displays on the tables. Mettawee’s sixth-graders volunteer for the event as do the Boy Scouts and other groups. The volunteers are fed lunch, but one of the top prizes for their volunteer effort is getting the first crack at the books. “Whoever helps, gets first dibs on the books,” Seamans said. “Pick out what you want.” Seamans said there is always a line of people waiting for the sale to open. “When the doors open, people are lined up outside, it’s pretty wild,” Seamans said. “They come rushing in. When there are 50 to 75 people lined up waiting to get in at 9 a.m.
you know it’s a good sale.” To show the scale of the book sale, Seamans said there are sometimes as many as 15 cashiers handling check out. In addition to books, there will be food including hamburgers and hotdogs, a silent auction and raffle, and a bake sale and vegetable stand. “Local community members donate vegetables,” Seamans said. It’s also a social event. Not only for the thousands of people who come through the door but for the volunteers, many of whom have been returning for years. “It really brings people together,” Seamans said. “Often you don’t see people all year and then you get to see them there and catch up on their lives.” Book prices are affordable with 20 cent paperbacks, $1 trade paperbacks, and $2 hardcovers. Credit cards are accepted. For more information, pawletpub@gmail.com or 802325-3123.
comes to the show will be disappointed,” he said. Judging will be at 1 p.m. and the awarding of trophies is slated for 2 p.m. Judges will honor the Best of Show with a trophy. Another 25 entries, including the popular People’s Choice award, will receive engraved slate awards. The slate was donated by Camara Slate. “The judges have built cars from the ground up so they
look at what was put into it,” Fowler said. Fowler said the event will feature food, with an expanded selection this year including maple goods, fried dough, burgers and a strawberry shortcake booth. There will also be vendors, a 50-50 raffle with donated prizes from chamber members, and a DJ will spin music to keep car enthusiasts bopping throughout the day.

Bike ride Aug. 4 to end addiction Tour de Slate is a bike ride through the Slate Valley on Saturday, Aug. 4 to raise money to end addiction. Addiction has touched the lives of countless friends, neighbors, coworkers and classmates. For some it’s too close to home; for others it’s the story of someone else. In Middletown Springs – and down the back roads of the Slate Valley – it’s a story of redemption. It’s a story of riding bikes to raise money to support the recovery of friends, family and neighbors. “Tour de Slate will change lives,” said Stan Achey, event coordinator. “100 percent of this fundraiser’s net proceeds will go directly to cover the expenses of men, women and teens ready to turn their lives around and break the chains of addiction at Teen Challenge Vermont. Teen Challenge Vermont is a 15-month, faith-based residential facility with an admissions office in Rutland at the Dream Center on West Street. “I came to Teen Challenge Vermont broken, hopeless and suffering from the perils of drug addiction,” said Warren York, IT supervisor of the Teen Challenge program. “My friends and family did not want
me in their lives. Today, through the skills and training of the program, my loved ones are proud of who I have become – a constructive member of society who wants to help others overcome addiction.” No one is ever turned away because of their financial circumstances or inability to pay, which is why fundraising is so crucial. Achey, an avid road cyclist, was inspired to combine his love for cycling with his desire to support Teen Challenge. “The idea just came to me,” he said. “God put this on my heart and I thought ‘I’ve gotta do it.’” Achey, supporters from Middletown Springs Community Church and Teen Challenge Vermont came together to bring the idea to fruition. Now they just need riders. The event is designed so that there is a ride route for everyone. There are three road routes including a metric century ride of 100 kilometers in length and also a family-friendly rails/trails route. Rest stops and volunteers will be positioned along the road routes to aid riders along the way. Granville’s own Slate Valley Museum is a prime stop for three of those four routes. The museum is offering tables, chairs and shade for all the rid-
ers as well as passes for future visits to the museum. All rides will start and end on the Green in Middletown Springs. Riders will receive a Tour de Slate T-shirt and a drawstring backpack with goodies inside. An authentic curry dinner will also be served. This meal is free of charge for riders and volunteers. Organizers hope the event will raise $20,000 which directly supports the care, clinical counseling and educational and career services for clients at Teen Challenge Vermont. Register to ride online at www.tourdeslate.org. Donations can be made at the same website or mailed payable to MSCC/Tour de Slate, PO Box 1012, Middletown Springs, Vermont 05757. For more information contact Achey at info@tourdeslate. org or at 802-558-0934.

WILLIAMS FOR VERMONT STATE SENATE Poultney Veteran Running for Vermont Senate POULTNEY, VT – Terry Williams, a lifelong Vermonter and resident of Poultney is running for the Vermont State Senate. Williams is campaigning to become one of three senators representing Rutland County. “I can no longer sit by and watch as our taxes go up, our school children become less safe, our infrastructure crumbles, and our constitutional rights are taken away.”, Williams stated. “I know what Vermont used to be like and a lot of work needs to be done now to keep it Vermont. I will listen to my constituents and will keep them informed because it is, and always was, about our people. When elected, I will be working hard for Vermonters and for this great state.” Williams, an Army veteran with 35 years of service to the state of Vermont and our great nation, believes in working for the greater good. As a three-term member of the Poultney Select Board and having served as the Poultney Health Officer, he knows how to work hard, stay focused on his goals and succeed within a group as well as independently. “I am able to accomplish tough tasks on a schedule and to get jobs done on time and on budget. Rutland County needs jobs, safe schools, smooth roads and dependable bridges. Shoring up the infrastructure and bettering the quality of life are interdependent; both need a thriving economy. Vermont government needs to focus upon attracting businesses to locate here. Making schools safe again means working with law enforcement to protect our children from those who suffer from mental illness, drug addiction and violent temperament. Keeping our constitutional rights and liberties is paramount to the survival of our personal freedoms. I’ll make these issues my main focus when I am elected.” Williams was born in Rutland, lived in Poultney most of his life, and raised his three children there. After retiring from the US Military, Lieutenant Colonel Terry Williams returned to Poultney where he owned and operated Slate Hill Farm until December 2017. An avid sportsman, Williams is the past president of the Poultney Fish and Game Club and is the Southern Vice President of the Vermont Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs. You can learn more about the candidate and follow his campaign on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Terryforsenate2018. WRITTEN AND PAID FOR BY THE CANDIDATE.

Rutland Women’s Healthcare hosting awareness walk To help raise awareness and support of breastfeeding, as well as commemorate World Breastfeeding Week, a walk, organized by Rutland Women’s Healthcare, will take place Wednesday Aug. 1, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rutland Regional Medical Center. This event is open to the community and all are welcome to participate. There will be information and resources available about breastfeeding. children in the US have lower incidence of intestinal disease, asthma, respiratory infections, ear infections, childhood diabetes, sudden infant death syndrome, and leukemia. It also provides children with a lower risk of obesity. Women who breastfeed have a lower incidence of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and osteoporosis. Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning will present Dr. Steven Sinding to talk about the influenza epidemic of 1918-19, the so-called “Spanish Flu,” which was one of the worst pandemics in history. The talk will take place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, in Burr and Burton Academy’s Hunter Seminar Room. The flu epidemic killed between 20 and 50 million people, more people than died fighting in the World War I, which was raging at the same time. This talk will discuss how it happened, why it was so hard to bring under control, what we have learned about epidemics, immunology and vaccines since then, and how prepared the medical and scientific communities are to prevent a similarly catastrophic outbreak in the future. Registration is $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Wells couple looks to rise from the ashes By Darren Marcy Despite being forced to dig through the ashes of their successful business to start again, Barry and Amber Morris of Wells, Vermont, are amazingly upbeat. A July 10 fire destroyed their barn, which included the tools, supplies and shop for their metalworking business. But while the flames stole their material things, the human kindness they’ve been shown by the community has filled their hearts and encouraged them to rebuild and move on from the destructive fire. Amber Morris said they moved to Wells the summer of 2017 after originally starting the business north of Lake George, hence the name, Adirondack Blacksmith. They have connections to the area and jumped at the chance when the house with the barn came on the market a year ago. Barry was raised in Granville, one of 10 kids. His grandparents were Alfred and Ruth Morris who built Granville Center, formerly known as Indian River Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Amber grew up in Thurman, just outside of Warrensburg, and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Green Mountain College in Poultney and master’s in Landscape Architecture from SUNY. Despite their connections to the area, the couple has only been in Wells about a year and are kind of introverted, Amber Morris said. She said that despite not really knowing too many people really well, the community response has been overwhelming. “We’ve been astounded at what the community has done,” Amber said. “It’s been
A July 10 fire destroyed a barn in which Barry and Amber Morris ran their business, Adirondack Blacksmith, in Wells, Vermont. amazing.” She said some businesses got together with a church next door to hold a benefit dinner in their honor. “I had barely met these people,” Amber Morris said. “They put together this huge thing and I was just blown away.” One of those involved was Juli Haley, owner of the Wells Country Store, who joined forces with other businesses and the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church to host a chicken dinner fundraiser July 19. “Barry and Amber are new here in town,” Haley wrote on Facebook. “Help show them our community love!” The next day, she followed up on Facebook celebrating the successful event. “I was so proud of our little town,” Haley wrote. “We sold out! And everyone was so gra-
cious and generous. It was truly a great night.” Despite several potential possibilities, a fire investigator couldn’t pinpoint the exact cause of the fire, which took more than four hours to control and extinguish. Amber Morris said linseed oil and propane in the structure certainly propelled it along and the 50- to 100-year-old barn went up fast. Barry Morris’ brother called them while they were running errands to tell them the barn was on fire. “I was numb for the 40-plus minutes it took to get home just to see that the fire took the barn to the ground in that little time,” Barry said. Inside were plenty of items people keep in barns, furniture, bikes, books, fishing poles and a snowblower.
But there were also cabinets and supplies for the remodeling of their house, Barry’s daughter’s wood kayak, handmade by her grandfather, and a 1981 Chevy pickup was heavily damaged. The truck was his baby and he was going to restore at some point. Perhaps the biggest loss, all the tools, equipment and supplies used in their business, a company the couple had launched four years ago and steadily grown into a successful online business. “We literally both quit our jobs four years ago and started it up,” Amber Morris said. “We’ve done really well. We’re not going back.” So far, the Morrises don’t have a firm answer on insurance coverage. Some of their possessions will be covered, but it’s possible the barn itself and
other items won’t be covered because they were operating a business from the barn without business coverage, even though it likely had nothing to do with the cause of the fire. They have already begun purchasing new tools and scavenging material from the ashes that can be salvaged to get back to work. Just a week after the fire, the couple had erected a large tent structure to begin work again to meet orders that had not been fulfilled at the time of the fire. The Morrises had shut down their online order site and posted a notice about the fire and warned customers of expected delays. “People have been really patient,” Amber Morris said 10 days after the fire. “I think we’re going to open up the online store again. Barry started welding brackets today.” But the couple needs to fill orders to generate cash flow. Questions about the insurance and the lack of income have encouraged people to set up a pair of GoFundMe accounts to help out. One is run by a friend and the other by a family member. They can be found at www. gofundme.com by searching for Barry and Amber Morris. One of the early donors on one of the GoFundMe sites was Kathy Juckett, CEO of Telescope Casual Furniture of Granville, who dropped a $1,000 donation. “We’re really thankful for how great people have been,” Amber Morris said. “That’s part of why we’re making this huge push to come back. We love Vermont so we’re determined to grow and be a valuable part of the community.” Adirondack Blacksmith can be found online at www.adirondackblacksmith.com as well as on Etsy and on Facebook.
Sunscreen dispensers installed at state parks Summer in Vermont is in full swing, and people will be able to stay and play longer, safe under the sun – thanks to free sunscreen stations being installed in Vermont State Parks and several other recreational areas. “We are always looking for ways to encourage people to spend time outdoors and enjoy everything Vermont has to offer,” said Craig Whipple, State Parks director for the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. “We’ve had a great run of beautiful, sunny days, and using sunscreen is an important part of being able to safely enjoy outdoor activities,” Whipple said. “We want to make sure no one has to call it a day just because they ran out of sunscreen.” The sunscreen stations are a joint effort by the Vermont Department of Health, State Parks and the skin cancer edu-
cation and prevention organization IMPACT Melanoma. The stations are intended to provide convenient access to SPF 30 sunscreen, but they also to serve as a reminder of how important it is to protect your skin from exposure to the hot summer sun. “Why are we doing this? The answer is simple,” said Vermont Health Commissioner Mark Levine, MD. “Most skin cancers can be prevented.” Dr. Levine explained that by taking a few basic steps to protect yourself when outdoors, and avoiding indoor tanning booths, the chances of developing melanoma go way down. “The good news is it’s easy to be sun smart,” said Dr. Levine. “Whenever you are outdoors – in the mountains, at a park or out on the lake – apply and reapply sunscreen, seek out shade, wear a hat, sunglasses, and longer clothes when practical.”
Deb Girard is executive director of the national nonprofit organization IMPACT Melanoma. She said they are pleased to be working with the Health Department to bring the sunscreen dispensers to parks and recreation areas around Vermont. “The sunscreen stations are a terrific way to deliver sun safety awareness to people when and where they most need to think about it,” said Girard. “Our goal at IMPACT Melanoma is to reduce the incidence of melanoma through education and early detection. This initiative is a creative and important way to help people understand the risk of skin cancer and what they can do to avoid it.” Dr. Levine echoed Girard’s emphasis on early detection. “Prevention is key,” said Dr. Levine. “Do what you can to avoid overexposure to the sun, check yourself regularly, and
