Fair Haven’s memories preserved By Krystle S. Morey Do you remember the bridge at Carver’s Falls? How about the airport or the town trolley? After more than three years of interviewing residents, compiling stories and scanning old photographs, Fair Haven’s first memories book is complete. “We’re so excited about our book,” said Lorraine Brown of the Fair Haven Historical Society. The Historical Society published the “Memories of Fair Haven Book” to create a historical record of events from 1900 to
date. “It’s not a history book,” Brown said. “Fair Haven has a very good history book up to 1900.” “Our purpose was for people to realize how important it is to document everything and to date it,” she said. The book, which has an accompanying audio CD, features stories from people who live or grew up in Fair Haven. “There are people to remember, places to remember, businesses past and present…,” Brown said.

Rupert Old Home Days begin Thursday By Matthew Saari A 50-year tradition continues next week when the Rupert Volunteer Fire Department hosts Rupert Old Home Days. “Oh my goodness it’s been 54 years – a long time,” said Kelly Lewis, carnival chairwoman, who attributes the carnival’s continued success to the tremendous outreach of community support each and every year. “We have such great community support,” she said. “Some people make it their vacation.” The multi-day event kicks off Thursday, Aug. 9 and continues until Saturday, Aug. 11. Festivities begin Thursday night with a performance of Slow Burn, a party band which plays a wide variety of jams including classic rock, blues and familiar favorites. The performance begins at 7 p.m.
Slow Burn has been entertaining the region since 2002. Its repertoire includes classics from Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Allman Brothers, Beatles, the Eagles and many others. The fun continues Friday with another live band performance, this one courtesy of the Atomic Ranch Hands, who take the stage at 7 p.m. Lewis said this band specializes in country and classic rock tunes. “All these bands are new for us this year,” she added. Saturday is the big Old Home Day, with a barbecue, parade and carnival scheduled throughout the day. A chicken barbecue will commence at 11:30 a.m. and continue till 2 p.m. There is such a

Pawlet Library hosting Washington County Band The Pawlet Public Library, with additional sponsorship from the businesses of Pawlet, will present the Washington County Band in an outdoor concert on the library lawn on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 7-9 p.m. In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Pawlet Town Hall Auditorium across the street from the library. Concert goers supply their own lawn chairs and blankets. Admission is free. More than 40 talented musicians from New York and Vermont play at various venues during the summer months. Under the direction of Paul Kafer, each concert is different to encourage followers to attend all the band’s con-
certs in the local area. The group performs popular songs of different styles of music like show tunes, jazz and American classics. The volunteer band was organized about 40 years ago, and it recruits younger musicians to join the seasoned musicians who take on a mentorship role. Currently, the ages of the band members range from 16 to 86. The Pawlet Public Library is housed in a renovated and accessible historic grammar school building, located at 141 School St. in Pawlet. For the full schedule of 2018 public programs, visit www.pawletpubliclibrary.wordpress.com or call 802-325-3123.

The parade route will follow Main Street, beginning at Pawlet Mountain Road and continuing to the Rupert firehouse. After the parade, which typically lasts an hour Lewis said, the carnival starts at 6:30 p.m. and Nobody Special, a Queensbury, New York-based band which peforms “a little bit of everything: including old country, new country and classic rock. The performance begins at 7 p.m. There will be food and bingo each night. Old Home Days is held at the Rupert firehouse, which is located at 2673 Vermont Rte. 153.

It also features several old and never-before-seen photos that were obtained from private collections and original glass plates that were scanned. Historical Society members called residents, met people on the street and more to collect memories. One source, who remembered Fair Haven’s old theater, turned out to be one of the people who was at the movies when the blackout happened in the 1980s. Another helped gather photos of all three fountains that were installed in the park over the years. The Civics Club, which featured male business owners, and various businesses such as
Because of the circus’ popularity last year, the Shriners decided to expand the events from six to 10. “It was a good turnout and that’s why we’re back again,” Trasacco said. The Shriners are a non-profit organization that manages 22 children’s hospitals throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The hospitals specialize in providing care to “children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and other special healthcare needs.” The nearest Shriners hospitals are
located in Montreal and Boston. “If we break even on the circuses we’re happy,” Trasacco said. “It’s all about the kids.” Tickets are available on the day of the show and are $15 for adults. Each adult ticket allows the admittance of two children under the age of 12; this practice being a long-standing tradition of the Shriners. There will be camel and pony rides available for one hour prior to each show. For more information call Trasacco at 518-480-3982.
banks, pharmacies and funeral parlors are also featured. “Those memories are in there,” Brown said. Many of the people who were interviewed for the book have since passed away. Brown said she was glad their stories are preserved because of this project and not lost. The common theme that kept emerging, Brown said, was: “It was a wonderful place to grow up.” Interviews, writing, editing, researching kept the Historical Society busy. The core team of volunteers consisted of Brown, Ceil Hunt and Ron Pesha. “And there were a lot of people who helped in other ways,” she said. Just because the book has been published doesn’t mean the memories have stopped filing in. The Historical Society already has some ideas for a
possible second book. “I found out after we had gone to print that there was a little ski area here,” Brown said. “It was up in the Maplewood Orchard area.” “And already, we have remembered a couple of things that we didn’t put in,” she said. “Memories of Fair Haven Book” and CD are available for purchase for $25 at the Historical Society Office in the Fair Haven municipal building on Mondays from 9:30-11 a.m. Copies can also be obtained by calling Brown at 802-265-3843 or Ceil Hunt at 802-265-7913. Books will also be available at the annual Charter Day Celebration at the Fair Haven Library. The celebration will take place on Oct. 16, beginning at 7 p.m. Those who have a Fair Haven memory to share should contact Brown or Hunt at the phone numbers listed above. They can also call the Historical Society office at 802265-3010.

Busy Saturdays in Castleton many along Main Street. The historical society is a partner and participant in this event, which falls on Saturday, Aug. 18 this year. In support of Colonial Day, Castleton Historical Society is sponsoring an outstanding illustrated lecture by cultural resource development expert William Hosley from Connecticut, at 4 p.m. in the accessible Federated Church for the finale of Colonial Day 2018. Mr. Hosley’s presentation, “Country Houses for a New Republic: Connecticut and Vermont’s Master Builders,” is co-sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. The Vermont Division for Historic Preservation said, “Castleton village, a historic district listed in the National Register of Historic Places, contains a wealth of architecturally distinguished buildings, particularly from the early 1800s, when it was an important regional trading center. Many of its Federal style houses were designed and built by Thomas Dake, and are richly detailed with elaborate doorways and windows and delicately carved ornament.”
Castleton Historical Society offers a pair of opportunities to visit historic buildings on Main Street in Castleton on the following Saturday mornings: Aug. 4, 11, 18, 25 and Sept. 1. The venerable Buel block at 556 Main St., next to the Castleton post office, was built 200 years ago as three brick commercial buildings joined together. Let a historical society volunteer show you the interior on a summer Saturday between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Holly Hitchcock, the president of Castleton Historical Society, suggests also taking a free tour of the society’s Higley house (built 1810-1811), which is located at 407 Main St., not far from Buel block. The Higley building is Castleton’s historic house museum, open Saturdays through Labor Day weekend between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. For 80 years, the Castleton Woman’s Club has presented “Castleton Colonial Day” each summer. The event features self-guided walking/ driving tours in which costumed club volunteers greet and orient guests inside remarkable residences and other places of interest,

St. John’s Episcopal Church to hold Choral Evensong Celebrate East Poultney Day 2018 by joining St. John’s Episcopal Church on Aug. 11 for a choral evensong. The service will begin at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Route 140 in East Poultney, Vermont. This song service will include music from the English Renaissance, including works by Thomas Morley, Thomas Ravenscroft, and Richard Farrent. The prelude will be played on the church’s circa 1830 William Nutting pipe organ music that will include compositions by Thomas Tallis, Matthew Locke, and Orlando Gibbons. The
service will be led by a choir specially organized for this event. The service is curated by Dr. James Cassarino, Director of the Vocal, Instrumental and Welsh Heritage programs at Green Mountain College. Following the service, light refreshments and fellowship will be offered. St. John’s Episcopal Church, which held its first service on May 27, 1832, sits on the historic village green in East Poultney, Vermont. St. John’s held regular Sunday services until 1931. In 2013, a group of concerned citizens took on the task of caring for this virtually untouched structure. The church features the orig-
inal box-style pews, stenciled walls, oil lamps and a remarkable, intact mechanical organ, one of four remaining organs manufactured by the Nutting Organ Company of Vermont. The Church has no plumbing facilities, no furnace, and no electricity. Recent restoration efforts have included repair of the Church roof and steeple and a complete reconstruction of the front stairs, all under the guidance of a restoration architect. For more information, please contact Reverend William Davidson of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, in Wells, Vermont by calling 518-499-1850.

Film screening Monday Israel Congregation of Manchester (ICM) concludes its Jewish Film Series with “Fanny’s Journey” (“Le Voyage de Fanny”), the incredible story of 13-year-old Fanny BenAmi and her younger sister who, after being fostered in Italy, are left on their own to flee from the Nazis to freedom. This moving film will be shown on Monday, Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Manchester Community Library in Manchester Center. Forced by circumstances and faced with the treachery and weakness of adults, Fanny gains the trust of 28 youngsters and, using uncommon resourcefulness and courage,
leads them out of Nazioccupied France to safety in Switzerland. This FrenchBelgian co-production (with English subtitles) has been called “a tour de force” and praised as “a handsome, compelling period piece that deftly portrays events through the eyes of its young protagonists” (Variety). Produced in 2016, it was inspired by a book written by Fanny herself, now in her late 80’s and living in Israel. “Fanny’s Journey”, the fourth in a series of Jewishthemed films presented by ICM this summer, is open to the public. A free-will donation is appreciated. For more information, call ICM at 802-362-4578.
China’s Xi Jinping: The Next Mao Zedong? Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) welcomes Jessica C. Teets of Middlebury College to discuss the rise to power of China’s Xi Jinping. The talk will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in Burr and Burton Academy’s Hunter Seminar Room. When President Xi Jinping was overwhelmingly reelected to a second 5-year term in Nov. 2017, Western media called him the “chairman of everything” or the
“next Mao Zedong” because of his expanded control over the party apparatus. It is, however, unclear whether he is doing this to fight corruption and poor policy implementation, or to merely to consolidate his own power. This talk will attempt to discern between these intentions. Registration is $15 in advance or $20 at the door. For more information or to register, please call our office at 802-867-0111 or visit www. greenmtnacademy.org.

Corn maze opens Aug. 11 in Ticonderoga What activity combines solving puzzles and testing your knowledge of history with fresh air, sunshine, and more than two miles of winding trails? Fort Ticonderoga’s “Heroic Maze: A Corn Maze Adventure!” Beginning Saturday, Aug. 11, bring the family along to test your navigational skills among towering stalks of corn in Fort Ticonderoga’s six-acre corn maze located near the King’s Garden. The design changes every year, making it the perfect annual family fun activity! The Heroic Corn Maze is included in a Fort Ticonderoga general admission ticket and will be open daily Aug. 11-26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m. The maze will be open on weekends only Sept. 1 through Oct. 21. It is also open Labor Day and
Columbus Day. Call 518-5852821 to ask about group rates and availability, or visit www. fortticonderoga.org for corn maze details. The maze, with a fun new 2018 design featuring a naval ship to represent the year of 1781, is divided into two phases, giving guests the chance to gain confidence in the smaller maze before tackling the main maze. The average journey will take 20 minutes for the first phase and up to an hour for the second phase. Hidden in the maze are eight stations, each representing a component of an 18th century ship. Players are given a Quest Card to collect a stamp from each section. It takes perseverance and skill to find all of the objects. Fort Ticonderoga’s youngest guests will have a chance to explore the Heroic Maze in the Kiddie Maze, a short maze
designed for the youngest visitors, giving a fun introduction to corn mazes! This maze has twists and turns, but no dead ends. With adult supervision, this maze is recommended for children up to age four. Also available: experience the Maze at night with Maze by Moonlight. Explore the six-acre corn maze using your flashlight as a guide and under the light of the full moon and crisp October air. The mysteries of the night surround you as you search for hidden stations in the maze to complete our “Engineer a Fort” Maze Quest! The Maze by Moonlight event takes place Oct. 26-27. The cost is $10 per person; tickets are available at the door. Admissions booth/maze opens at 7 p.m.; last ticket sold at 9 p.m., the maze closes at 10 p.m.
