How alcohol impacts driving ability precisely what drivers do when getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, which can blur vision. Vision helps drivers determine the distance between their vehicles and objects such as other cars, medians and pedestrians. Alcohol reduces drivers’ ability to accurately assess that distance and also can adversely affect drivers’ ability to determine the speed of vehicles with which they’re sharing the road. The NHTSA notes that vision is affected for drivers whose blood alcohol content is as low as .02, which is well within the legal limit. n Color distinction: Alcohol can reduce drivers’ ability to distinguish colors, which can put the lives of drivers, their passengers, pedestrians, and fellow motorists in serious jeopardy. In addition to compromising their ability to understand stoplights, alcohol can make it hard for drivers to see road markings, traffic signs and other vehicles’ turn signals. n Reaction time: Alcohol impairs drivers’ ability to process information quickly, which can make them especially vulnerable to sudden developments on the road, such as other drivers stopping suddenly or pedestrians crossing roadways outside of crosswalks.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol and other drugs of impairment are involved in approximately 40 percent of all traffic crashes in which someone is killed each year. Men and women who drink as well as people under the age of 21 who consume alcohol illegally may mistakenly assume that consuming a couple of drinks won’t impair their ability to safely operate a vehicle. But the NHTSA points out that alcohol and other drugs reduce various skills drivers need to safely operate motor vehicles. Even a slight reduction in any of the following skills can prove deadly to those who drive while consuming alcohol and/or the people with whom they share the road. n Judgment: The NHTSA notes that alcohol adversely affects areas of the brain that control judgment. Even the most experienced drivers may not judge situations like traffic or poor road conditions after consuming alcohol as they might when they have not had a drink. Momentary or seemingly minor lapses in judgment when behind the wheel can prove deadly. n Vision: Few drivers would willingly drive with blurred vision, but thatÕs
5 tips to successfully sell your car on the vehicle as well to see how it measures up. Some buyers will request that information as well. The Department of Motor Vehicles also suggests gathering a release of liability form to keep sellers from being liable for any damages incurred after the vehicle is sold; warranty documents if the car is still under a manufacturer’s warranty; and the vehicle’s title.
Selling a used vehicle does not have to be a complicated process. But too often private sellers struggle to sell their vehicles because they are unsure of how to do so. A little information on the selling process can make it easy to unload vehicles quickly and at the prices sellers desire.
1. Know the market. The experts at Edmunds say sellers should research the market before putting their vehicles up for sale. Compare the prices of similar makes and models, and track whether those vehicles are moving quickly. Cars that are hot commodities will sell relatively quickly. Even though these may not be the flashy vehicles, family sedans, trucks and vans tend to turn over fast. Convertibles, classic cars or those with special features may take longer to move and will have to be priced accordingly.
4. Prepare the vehicle. Prior to selling, give the car a facelift and a good wash. Vacuum floors, floormats, seats, and the trunk. Clean the interior, and wash windows inside and out. A fresh wash and wax can improve the appearance of the vehicle and help it to photograph well for sale pictures.
5. Advertise the sale. Buyers may be waiting in the wings to purchase used vehicles that have been well-maintained.
2. Determine the vehicleÕs worth. Just because sellers want to get predetermined amounts for their vehicles doesn’t mean those figures are the going rates for their cars and trucks. Using resources like Kelley Blue Book, NADA Guides and Autotrader.com can help sellers determine the value of their
rides according to factors such as mileage, age, model, and condition of the vehicle.
3. Gather receipts and other paperwork. Sellers should dig through their files to unearth maintenance receipts and other documentation on their vehicles.
For those who can’t find receipts, ask for such receipts where the vehicle was serviced. According to Kelley Blue Book, proof of regular oil changes and other services can be a good selling point because it shows that the seller maintained the vehicle to the best of his or her ability. It could be worth the investment to pull the CarFax¨ report
Advertise the vehicle in a variety of different formats. Opt for the classifieds section of a local newspaper, post it online and share through social media. A sign on the vehicle is also smart. This will improve the chances of it being seen. Selling a car can take some effort, but with the right tactics, cars can be sold quickly and at prices that make sellers happy.

A beginner’s guide to electric cars Electric or hybrid vehicles can be smart additions to ecofriendly lifestyles. Although such cars were once science fiction, EVs are now increasingly more common and traversing roadways around the world. Thanks to several mainstream brands offering EVs and hybrid models, consumers are more informed than ever before about the benefits of a pluggedin ride. Still, even with the wealth of information available, some people still may be unsure about what owning an EV entails and how to make informed decisions when shopping for such vehicles. Going electric means thinking beyond the gas station. Here’s how to navigate the ins and outs of EVs. n Type of vehicle: First consider that not all EVs are the same. Hybrid vehicles use a mix of gasoline and electricity and tend to have long fuel ranges. All-electric cars will only use electricity that is gained through charging the vehicle for a certain period of time. n Affordability: Consumers can expect to pay more for electric and hybrid vehicles than gas-powered vehicles. But as demand increases, costs may drop. According to a report from USA Today, estimates point to EVs as being as affordable as gas vehicles by
2021. Another consideration is there may be tax incentives for purchasing an EV. Speak with a tax professional to see if this is applicable. n Environmental savings: Electric cars produce no emissions from the tailpipe and reduce dependency on oilbased fuels. Furthermore, EVs will not need oil changes or emissions checks that traditional cars require, further saving resources. The resource Plug in
Cars says that EVs can also save on fuel costs, ranging at 2 cents per mile traveled, compared to 12 cents for gas-fueled vehicles. n Fill-ups: EVs can be charged at home using personal charging kits or at charging stations in the neighborhood. Charge times will depend on the size of the vehicle and its battery. According to TheChargingPoint.com, an EV resource, the typical time for an all-elec-
tric car using a standard UK home wall socket is between 6 and 8 hours. Some new EVs can be charged in 30 minutes to an hour at rapid charging points. n Solar + EVs = savings: Consumer Reports advises that, when EVs are combined with home solar systems, ‘fuel’ costs can be completely eliminated. That financial gain can be a big motivator for some consumers. n Short trips: Individuals who travel 80 miles or less per day may find pure electric vehicles advantageous. Those who have to go further should consider hybrids that offer greater range. However, Tesla, Chevy and Nissan EVs have recently moved beyond the 200-mile range before requiring a charge. n Charging stations: A report from University of Michigan researchers using data from the Department of Energy suggests that there are now roughly 16,000 public electric vehicle charging stations with about 43,000 connectors in the United States. ChargeHub, with information from the Canadian Automobile Association, states there are a total of 6,473 EV chargers across Canada. Electric and hybrid vehicles could be the wave of the future as more people embrace the convenience these cars offer.

Some telltale signs of engine trouble you should know Engine troubles are many drivers’ worst nightmares. Whether they occur out on the road or they prevent drivers from leaving their driveways in the morning, engine troubles can quickly derail plans and cost drivers substantial amounts of money. Thankfully, engine troubles are often noticeable long before cars break down. Drivers who learn to recognize the signs that suggest engines might be in need of work can avoid being stranded on the road or at home.
· Vehicle shaking: One telltale sign of engine trouble is when a vehicle shakes while it’s moving. Drivers of old
cars and trucks may not expect the smoothest of rides, but cars that shake, sometimes violently, could be experiencing problems. Sometimes a car might shake if its spark plugs need replacing. That’s an easy, inexpensive fix that drivers can do on their own in a matter of minutes. A more serious cause of the vehicle shaking could be problems with its timing belt or fuel intake system. Drivers who inspect and/or replace their spark plugs but notice their vehicles are still shaking should take their cars into their mechanics immediately.
· Sudden gas mileage reduction: Drivers who notice they’re not getting

in the combustion flow. Such noises may include knocking, hissing and popping. Vehicles making these noises should be taken to a mechanic immediately.
· Stalling: Vehicles that jerk or stall also may be experiencing engine troubles. While old spark plugs might be the culprit, stalling or jerking may indicate clogged fuel lines or fuel filters. Such issues may also be traced to issues with the vehicle’s computer system. Bring such issues to the attention of a mechanic, and reduce their frequency with regular oil changes.

as much bang for their gas bucks as they used to might have engine troubles to blame. According to Pep Boys, a dropoff in gas mileage might be indicative of an issue in the compression stroke of the engine. Such an issue can typically be fixed by having the fuel system serviced, which will clean the fuel system and can help restore the vehicle’s performance and reduce emissions. · Noises: If driving has become as noisy as a rock concert, drivers should take heed that this could be indicative of engine trouble. Your vehicle has a recall - now what? Vehicles are expensive. When motorists drive their vehicles away from a dealership, they hope to travel many miles before they need to come back for maintenance. But manufacturers sometimes issue recalls that can affect drivers of both new and old vehicles. Recalls are safety precautions taken should a portion of a vehicle or the entire car or truck not operate in the manner it was intended. In many instances, auto manufacturers will directly contact customers who are affected by a recall via a letter, email or both. Individuals also can stay current on recalls by visiting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website (www.NHTSA.gov).
