Poultney Continued from front page According to his daughterin-law, Mary Ann McWithey, “Milt” who passed away in January 2017, over the course of several years, “created a working train design of downtown Poultney from his young childhood days. He was born in 1929. It is a very exact replica based upon his memory and photographs from that time period.” The replica was generously donated last year by Milt’s son, Keith McWithey, and transported to Poultney from Tennessee, but the detail and workmanship is amazing. Only a portion of the replica has been reconstructed. The restored exhibit-classroom will also showcase other all new exhibits of neverbefore-seen items from the collection--a “Poultney on the Move” exhibit with historic photographs documenting changing modes of transportation in the community, including a map of the D & H line and circa 1905 train schedule,

During the restoration, new portions of the old slate chalkboards and cork boards were uncovered, and an original color scheme discovered, as determined by historic paint color expert, Leonard Spencer of Cabot, who has worked with us before on the exterior repainting project for the East Poultney Schoolhouse several years ago. Spencer also recreated a faux wood grain paint effect on the window trim and doors that was original to the classroom. East Poultney Day this year will also feature a speaker sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council-- novelist Deborah Lee Luskin with her program, Getting from Here to There: A History of Roads and Settlement in Vermont, scheduled for 11 a.m. in the East

Historian to speak on cultural diversity at Mount Independence On Sunday, Aug. 12, the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell, will offer a talk on “Ethnic and Cultural Diversity at Mount Independence” by historian and site interpreter Paul Andriscin. The event is included in the regular admission fee of $5 for adults and free for children under 15. While there you can visit the museum and walk any or all of the six miles of trails on the over 300-acre site. Call 802-948-2000 for more information. This talk looks at how a rag-tag force from six states and Vermont managed to maintain the Northern American Army here during the American Revolution. They faced lack of supplies, disease, starvation, bad weather conditions, and having to overcome prejudices against their fellow soldiers. Why was there so much distrust and hatred between the troops? What forces divided them and what kept them together? The Mount Independence State Historic Site is one of the best-preserved Revolutionary War sites in America. It is located at 497 Mount Independence Road, six miles west of the intersections of Vermont Routes 22A and 73 near Orwell village; carefully follow the signs. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Oct. 14. For more information about the Vermont State-Owned Historic Sites, visit: www.historicsites.vermont.gov

Blood drive Tuesday in Rutland Rutland Regional will be cosponsoring a community blood drive with the American Red Cross, Tuesday, Aug., 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the CVPS/Leahy Community Education Center, 160 Allen St., Rutland. An estimated 38 percent of Americans are eligible to give

blood, but of those, less than 10 percent actually donate each year. If you are healthy and eligible, please come out to donate. The need is real. Most donations take about an hour, so book your appointment by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-733-2767.

Twig remembers....

Laura Loso It was Calvi’s Dairy Bar, then Kandi’s Korner, and then Babe Minard’s Snack Bar (in Rutland where the KFC stands) when daughter Laura and her husband, Larry, took over. Laura was this pretty little lady who always looked 20 years younger than her actual age. There was a good crew of guys of all ages who hung around the place to have fun kidding with her. One day, she was down and out and told me that her two boys needed one more year of band and their instruments would be paid for. She said she had asked everyone and nobody could help. “I can.” She said “No, you can’t.” I said, “Spell my last name… there is no “T” – Don’t tell me I can’t do something.” I went to my friend, Ray Pierce, who was director of the grade school band and told him of my plan. He lent me one of the extra trumpets Ellis Music allowed him to have. My older brother had been good on that instrument and he taught me the scale. One day at the Loso

house, I found Darren at home. I played the scale and told him I wanted help with a few Christmas songs. We started in. His brother Jody came in and went up and brought down his trombone. He brought in his friend, Colin Hurlburt, another trombone, and then one of them brought Danny Sbardella, who spent a lot of time with his Gramma (Minnie) who lived three houses up the street. We had six songs down pat, so I hooked up with the two local convalescent homes for early concerts. Telling my friend, Rube St. John, owner of “The Promoter” newspaper, he wanted a concert for the Rotary Club for their last meeting before the holiday. Six songs. Now I was going to do something special for the finale and show off our ace trumpeters and also give those trombonists a few good slides. The Rotarians ate it up, especially the finale – a super duper jazzed up version of “The Saints Go Marching In”. Fred Smith, owner of The Somewhere Restaurant, was

telling everybody that I was the music teacher at the high school. I was going to Castleton State as a business major, but my part time job was custodian at the high school. People would ask how I liked my job at the high school… “Ok. I love it.” Was always my answer. They thought I was “Music Man” for a couple more years. Well, things worked out for everybody. Ray Pierce got his two ace musicians back, and Laura got her instruments to keep. Final Fair Haven concert of the season Thursday Having the JP Murphy band close out the Fair Haven Concert’s summer series has become a bit of a tradition. This Irish band will be back on center stage Thursday, Aug. 16 beginning at 7 p.m. This is a free ice cream night, so you will want to get there early. J.P. Murphy was formed in early 1991, by Patrick Gray Sr. who sings lead and plays rhythm guitar or banjo as well as an occasional harmonica. His love for his Irish heritage, the words and music he grew up with, made it a natural choice for him to form a traditional Irish group. The band engages the audience and

encourages them to sing and even dance along. One of the highlights each year is when the chilThe J.P. Murphy Band dren in the audience are invited up to do the “Unicorn dance” for the song first made famous

by the Irish Rovers. So, bring your lawn chairs and blankets early to enjoy the ice cream and the toe-tapping, handclapping tunes. It promises to be a truly entertaining evening in one of Vermont’s loveliest venues.

The concert committee would like to thank all our sponsors, donors, patrons, musicians, sound engineers, and many volunteers for once again making our summer concert series such a success. The concerts go on rain or shine. The rain location is the Congregational Church at the north end of the park. In case of inclement weather, call 802-2653010 ext. 301 to find out if the concert is moved indoors. Thanks to everyone for their support of another successful summer series. Hope to see you for the holiday concert in November and next summer for the 2019 series.

Pancake breakfast set for this Saturday The members of Hiram Lodge #101, F&AM, and those of Gilman Chapter #88, OES, will once again be hosting their monthly pancake breakfasts for the public on Saturday from 8-11 a.m. Cost to attend is $9 for adults and $3 for kids ages 4-12 years.

Celebrate East Poultney Day 2018 by joining St. John’s Episcopal Church on Aug. 11 for a choral evensong. The service will begin at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Route 140 in East Poultney, Vermont. This song service will include music from the English Renaissance, including works by Thomas Morley, Thomas Ravenscroft, and Richard Farrent. The prelude will be played on the church’s circa 1830 William Nutting pipe organ music that will include compositions by Thomas Tallis, Matthew Locke, and Orlando Gibbons. The service will be led by a choir specially organized for this event. The service is curated by Dr. James Cassarino, Director of the Vocal, Instrumental and Welsh Heritage programs at Green Mountain College. Following the service, light refreshments and fellowship will be offered. St. John’s Episcopal Church,

which held its first service on May 27, 1832, sits on the historic village green in East Poultney, Vermont. St. John’s held regular Sunday services until 1931. In 2013, a group of concerned citizens took on the task of caring for this virtually untouched structure. The church features the original box-style pews, stenciled walls, oil lamps and a remarkable, intact mechanical organ, one of four remaining organs manufactured by the Nutting Organ Company of Vermont. The Church has no plumbing facilities, no furnace, and no electricity. Recent restoration efforts have included repair of the Church roof and steeple and a complete reconstruction of the front stairs, all under the guidance of a restoration architect. For more information, please contact Reverend William Davidson of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, in Wells, Vermont by calling 518-499-1850.

Yes, you can learn how to communicate with your dog “WOOF!” What is that dog saying? Is a yawn always just a yawn? Why does a dog shake off even when it’s not wet? Is a tail wag always friendly? Come learn all about how dogs communicate and what they say with their bodies. Castleton Free Library will be presenting Deb Helfrich on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 1 p.m. in a free program for adults and children aged 10 and over. She will demystify dog communication, explain how dogs express themselves, and explore how we can all live safely and happily together. Deb Helfrich is the owner and co-founder of Gold Star Dog Training LLC, based in Fairfax, Vermont. She has been a therapy dog handler since 1996 and the volunteer Director of Training and Certification for Therapy Dogs of Vermont (TDV) since 2005. In this role, she manages the testing and evaluation of new therapy dog teams, oversees a statewide team of testers and evaluators, and is responsible for all policies and guidelines related to therapy dog certification. She also created the TDV’s first training programs in 2008. The program is free, but open to humans only. Please leave pups comfortably at home. Light refreshments for all humans

will be served. The library is located at 638 Main Street, Castleton, Vermont. It is accessible through its north entrance via a walkway from parking on the west side. Manchester Wood closes abruptly after 42 years By Krystle S. Morey After 42 years of manufacturing solid wood furniture, Manchester Wood announced last week that it would close its doors for good. Owners Ed and Priscilla Eriksen announced the news of the business’ closing on the company’s website (manchesterwood.com) and on its Facebook page (facebook.com/ ManchesterWood) on Aug. 1. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of Manchester Wood Inc.,” the posts read. Manchester Wood, a major employer in the Granville area, handcrafted a multitude of woodproducts at its Granville plant including folding food trays, bookshelves, end tables, foot rests and coffee tables. An employee who preferred to remain anonymous reported that the company laid off a number of its employees in July in preparation for the closing. The Aug. 1 post, signed “Love and Peace, Ed and Priscilla Eriksen,” continued: “We cannot thank our employees, customers, friends, and community enough for their unwavering support. “A heartfelt thank you to our employees. Without you, we would not have even been in business. Your dedication and talent allowed us to have 42 great years making quality solid wood furniture. ‘Family’ is how we feel about you.

Manchester Wood’s plant at County Road 24 in Granville, New York Working by your side was a very special honor and we will never forget you. “To our customers, who have chosen to buy American made products and graced us with glowing positive reviewsWe cannot thank you enough for your support over the years. It has been an honor bringing our furniture into your homes.” In another post on Aug. 2, Ed and Priscilla Eriksen blamed “treacherous times for American-made products, let alone American-made furniture,” for the company’s demise. No official close date was noted, but the company is hosting a “going out” sale. The Eriksens failed to respond to multiple calls for comment.

Granville Town Supervisor Matt Hicks said he was surprised by the announcement. “…we didn’t see this coming,” he said. “There was no notification at all.” Further commenting on the abruptness of the closing, Hicks said: “Certainly it’s going to hurt … the economic impact of losing that many jobs in a town is going to hurt.” “We are certainly going to miss them,” he added. The parcel on which Manchester Wood is located, at 1159 County Route 24 in the town of Granville, is assessed at $1.4 million. The company last year paid $23,042.56 in school taxes and $15,176 in town and county taxes. Though the factory is located just over the town-village

line, the village will miss out on some income as well. When Manchester Wood moved to Granville in the early ‘90s, it reached an agreement with the village board to service the site with village water and sewer. Then-owner Clifford Pierce paid for the installation of 1,200 feet of pipeline to connect the village’s existing line to the village boundary and a pair of grinder pumps to hook into the village’s sewer system. Additional footage was installed in the town to the plant at a cost of $45,000 to the company. The company began in owner Clifford Pierce’s basement in Walton, New York. He started producing outdoor furniture after a plant in Walton burned down. The community in 1958 paid Pierce a bonus to move to the burned site and build a plant for his company. The company expanded from 10,000 square feet to 140,000 square feet over the years at the Walton site, before moving operations to the company’s offshoot plant in Manchester, Vermont. “They outgrew Manchester,” Hicks said. Pierce in May 1989 declared that in order to be competitive, the business would need to relocate and build a larger plant. The company was forced to turn over its stock at the Manchester factory store seven times a year because of lack of space. Before moving to Granville it tried to make a move in Vermont, but zoning regulations would have taken two years or more. “Two years is nothing to IBM or GM, since they usually work with a five-year plan, but we work by the seat of our pants,” said Pierce at the 1989 luncheon. It even purchased an old sawmill site nearby its Manchester plant with the intentions of expanding there. Six months of site tests and $78,000 later, the plan was abandoned.

“We’re planning now for the next 35 years – that’s why we’re trying to make a move,” said the then-60-year-old businessman at a luncheon with area officials and community members. Pierce’s sights were then set on a 46-acre site in Middle Granville, located on the village-town line. About 40 percent of its employees at the time were from the Wells, Pawlet, Dorset and Granville area. He also cited the low unemployment rate (about 2 percent) in Manchester and Bennington counties. “There’s no one to hire,” Pierce said of the area. “We feel Granville offers us the opportunity to stay within a commuting distance for many of our employees,” Pierce said in a 1990 issue of the Granville Sentinel. “The community seems positive, and the availability of housing and (an) excellent building site were all factors in our decision.” Construction of the 60,000 square foot, $1.6 million plant began in November 1989, at the site of the former Smith farm. In January 1991, Manchester Wood became fully operational in Granville, bringing to the area more than 100 jobs. Priscilla Eriksen, Pierce’s daughter, and her husband, Ed, owned and operated the company for the last 20-plus years. “Fighting, fighting, fighting to keep the dream going,” the couple wrote in a post on the company’s Facebook page following its announcement to close. In a July 1989 issue of the Granville Sentinel, Michael “Craig” Campbell Realty congratulated Clifford Pierce and Manchester Wood with an advertisement, calling the business a “substantial new asset” to the Granville community. “It will be a great boost to the area economy and existing job market,” the ad read. Local officials at the time agreed, calling the plant an “economic boon for Granville.”
