The 2018 Washington County Fair Program - 13
An agricultural tradition for over 100 years Dating back to 1883, the Washington County Fair has been the ultimate culmination of agriculture and entertainment for residents of Washington County. The fair exhibits the hard work and dedication of those involved in the agriculture field and allows everyone to come together and enjoy the best of what the area has to offer. Every year a multitude of attractions draws people to the fairgrounds to celebrate. Whether it’s the tractor pulls, the rides, the food, winning prizes or the educational experience of discovering the vast agriculture of the county, people pour into the fairgrounds each year. For the first six years of its existence the fair was held in the Town of Jackson and was hosted by the Farmers and Mechanics Agricultural Society. After its time at Lake Lauderdale Park in Jackson, a new society called the Cambridge Valley Agricultural Society and Stock Breeders Association took control and relocated the fair to a new location in Cambridge. In its time at the Cambridge location, the
fair grew exponentially more popular and began to draw crowds from further away. Prior to the popularization of private automobiles, trains were the ideal way for scores of “out-oftowners” to make their way to the fair. The
Washington County Fairgrounds circa late 1960s. Delaware & Hudson Canal Co. Railroad offered a very popular service at the time; the company would supply round trip rides to and from the fair, which would also include admission. Residents from Granville, Fort Ann, Fort Edward and other areas could all utilize this service for under $3. The popularity of the Cambridge site was probably due to the fact that it included 40 acres, stables for 200 horses, a half-mile

track, a 2,500-seat grandstand, and seven acres of buildings. Perhaps the largest impact that the Cambridge location had on the fair was in 1929, when the fairground garnered the power of electricity. World War II had a neg-

ative impact on the fair, as the fairgrounds were not open during the war, leading to its bankruptcy. The bankruptcy could have stymied the growth of the fair or destroyed the fair all together, but ultimately, it didn’t. The Cambridge Valley Agricultural Society and Washington County Junior Fair, which were previously two separate organizations, joined forces and in 1954 the fair was conducted at the intersection of Routes 29 and 40 in Greenwich, the presentday location of the Hannaford Supermarket. The two Boards of Directors, although working together, were still separate boards, and they decided to move the fair in 1961 to its current location at the intersection of Route 29 and Old Schuylerville Road in Greenwich, which was initially purchased as a 25-acre plot but has grown immensely ever since.
The 1960s and 70s in particular saw drastic expansion of the fair grounds, which allowed the event to become the spectacle that it is today. “There were new buildings added almost every year through the 1960s and 1970s and further additions were made in the 80s and 90s,” said JoAnne Booth. “It’s an ongoing thing. Our fair is extremely fortunate to have the buildings and facilities that are here.” In 1967, a 43-acre parcel was added on to the grounds and four years later a dormitory was added to supply housing for the large number of kids involved in the fair, especially those involved in the 4-H and Future Farmers of America programs. In 1977, a historic school house was erected at the fairgrounds. The 1970s also saw some events and attractions come and go, such as pony racing which lasted three or four years. In 1991, the Cambridge Valley Agricultural Society Board of Directors and the Washington County Junior Fair Board of Directors, which had been working together for decades, finally merged into one 32-member volunteer board. The name of the new organization was simply the Washington County Fair Inc., which has stuck as the name ever since. In 1999, the agriculture center was built and in 2008 another 40 acres were thrown into the mix to make sure there was plenty of room to park for the thousands who come, while also allowing some room for potential expansion of the event.
Currently, the fairground stands at 120 acres and the fair is now the largest tourist attraction in Washington County, with more than 120,000 people flocking to it from all over the country each year. This year’s fair kicks off on Monday, Aug. 20, with the gates opening at 5 p.m. The gates will open at 9 a.m. the remainder of the week, through the final day on Sunday, Aug. 26. Admission is $12 per day; all-week passes are available for $36. Kids 13 and under get in free, as do active military personnel with valid identification. There will be a carnival fun day, senior citizen day, children’s day and family fun day, each offering unique discounts. As usual, parking is free.

MUSIC Adirondack Fiddlers In 1978 at Lanfear’s Tavern in Lake George, the Adirondack Fiddlers started as a group of people interested in enjoying old-time fiddling and square dancing. Friday is Career and Technical Education day Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs provide students who are hands-on learners an opportunity to master academics and technical skills within subject areas that interest them. The WashingtonSaratoga-Warren-HamiltonEssex BOCES has sponsored Friday’s events for this year’s fair and will offer a full day of events featuring students demonstrating some of the BOCES technical programs. Maribeth Macica, the organization’s public information specialist, said CTE programs are for students entering 11th and 12th grades from the 31 school districts within their fivecounty region. The students attend one
of two technical education centers located in Saratoga and Hudson Falls. “They graduate with industry credentials that they can use to go on to college, a technical school or go straight into the work force,” Macica said. The purpose of the Career and Technical Education demonstrations is to spread the word about the 24 programs available through the BOCES CTE program and to answer questions about what is available. “We feel it is important to introduce parents to what their children can do in the coming years,” Macica said. “Students will demonstrate the skills they have acquired at CTE to show the public what these programs are really all about and to give

kids and their parents a preview of what they can do if they choose CTE.” The program allows students who know what they want to pursue to get a head start on their career field and allows those who haven’t yet decided what their future holds to explore a variety of options. “It’s hands-on and exposes the students to these opportunities early,” Macica said. Demonstrations during the week include things like culinary arts and hospitality on Monday, health occupations and auto body repair on Tuesday, cosmetology and health on Wednesday, and
horse care and early childhood education on Thursday, On Saturday, demonstrations are planned for advanced manufacturing, criminal justice and environmental conservation and forestry. Sunday offers horticulture, landscaping and floral design. Friday, however, is the big CTE Day at the fair. Demonstrations are held throughout the day in twohour blocks. Culinary arts and hospitality, auto body repair, building trades, criminal justice studies, environmental conservation and forestry, and welding demonstrations are scheduled.

The label tells a story. New York State’s agriculture industry is one of our great assets. Keeping it growing and thriving is one of the most important things we can do. The New York State Grown & Certified program makes it easy for consumers to identify local, safely-handled, and environmentally responsible agricultural products including pure maple syrup. This voluntary program is a cooperative effort among producers, processors, wholesalers, retailers, restaurants, and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets to meet consumer demand for high-quality food and agricultural products. The New York State Grown & Certified program certifies that participating farms are protecting natural resources and using safe food handling practices, with audits that verify that products are handled in a manner that minimizes the risks of food safety hazards. 4-H gets youth involved The Washington County Fair continues to offer 4-Hers as well as all youth opportunities to show off their mastery of skills, maybe develop some independence, share some of their generosity and meanwhile letting others know that they belong to this worldwide organization. “We are all about building and developing youth into active and contributing members of their communities,” said Chrys Nestle, the 4-H Extension Educator for Cor nell Cooperative Extension. “The Washington County Fair is a great platform for them to experience many of these opportunities.” 4-H offers many activities through three missions – Science, Technolog y, Engineering, Math; Healthy Living; and Citizenship and Leadership. Youth spend a great deal of time preparing for the fair each year. “Our projects incorporate one or more of these missions,” Nestle said. “While not all project work can be entered in the fair, youth can be very creative in exhibiting the new skills and knowledge they’ve gained throughout the year.” The range of activities for 4-H participants is exciting. Some members raise and show animals – not only dairy cows but beef cows, chickens, rabbits, goats, sheep and pigs. Youth also showcase home grown vegetables, baked goods, and photography for judging. Clubs also can enter displays in the fair. The club exhibits is a good place to see what clubs
have been doing over the past year. Photography continues to gain popularity during fair week, and has gotten more diverse. With the addition of a new set of categories, youth are now able to enter digitally enhanced photos. All submissions are judged by a volunteer evaluators using the Danish System. Instead of first place, second place etc., this evaluation method focuses on recognizing what the children have accomplished. Judges primarily consider age and the amount of work dedicated to the project. Entries are then awarded blue, red or white ribbon for excellent, very good and worthy. Another type of valuable experience gained within the exhibition process is communication skills as youth are able to converse with their judge about their project. Judges are encouraged to engage the youth to talk
about their project, what they liked and what they thought was challenging. “Part of their success,” Nestle said, “is being able to have a conversation with the judges.” However, if a child has nothing of their own to display, volunteers are always welcome in other areas. Youth can volunteer in the 4-H Food Booth, be a junior superintendent or do an activity with fairgoers in the Youth Building. Everyone involved is able to contribute to the goals of 4-H and lend a helping hand at the fair. The 4-H Food Booth will return this year offering hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches and more. They also offer a full breakfast until 9:30 am every morning. The Milkshake Booth offers cones and shakes. Proceeds are used to support the 4-H clubs, educa-
tional trips, 4-H volunteer trainings and college scholarships. Both stands are operated by 4-H members and volunteers but all are welcomed to help out. This is a great community service opportunity. “They work hard,” said Nestle. “Most of the kids love meeting new people. They also gain valuable work experience that can help them later on get a job.” “The fair and 4-H provide youth with opportunities for growth and mastery, become more independent, share their generosity and experience a sense of belonging,” states Nestle. And what are the 4 H’s? The answer is in the pledge: I pledge my Head to clearer thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to larger service and my Health to better living; for my Club, my Community, my Country and my World.

The Cheese Lady In the creative world of culinary arts, Sarah Kaufmann has literally carved a unique niche. The former graphic artist has focused her talents on cheese – not making it, or painting it, but carving it. Her work has ranged from a 10-pound violin, to a 300-pound gorilla, to a 1,900-pound astronaut and to a 2,185-pound Year of Dairy Cows cheese creation that was displayed at the Indiana State Fair. Kaufmann’s Where: Ag. Center cheese-carving career evolved from milking parlor her experience in When: Wednesday-Sunday food marketing and 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. promotion where she learned a special event can be a catalyst for drawing media attention and building retail sales. Her decision to become a cheese carver combines her artistic talents and marketing skills to entertain and educate consumers, the media, retailers and chefs. Known as “The Cheese Lady,” Kaufmann has received hundreds of commissions for her work. She creates sculptures in her studio and sculpts cheese at countless venues including many fairs. Although she uses many kinds of cheese, she works most often with mild yellow or white cheddar.
Kaufmann returns to the Washington County Fair for the fifth straight year and will display her talents on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the milking parlor. She invites fairgoers to stop in to, talk with her, and to enjoy delicious free samples of Cabot cheese.
Visit www.washingtoncountyfair.com The New Incredible Talking, Milking Cow Aggie Culture, Aggie for short, named by Name the Cow contest winner Amanda Perkins of Hudson Falls NY, is found in the AG Center. The incredible Milking Cow is an interactive educational tool, allowing children of all ages to learn the art of milking and to learn about the dairy industry. Kids can take turns milking Aggie. The fiberglass milking cow is handmade and hand painted. A hidden pump delivers constant fluid from the holding tank to the udders to the authentic stainless steel milking pail. The Incredible Milking Cow talks and will say things like “I have quite an appetite. I eat 40 pounds of food every day…and then I wash it down with about a bathtub full of water!”

AG Center celebrates 20 years In 1997 the Washington County Fair Board of Directors envisioned a building at the fair that had as its purpose to educate the general public about the agriculture industry. For the next two years through much planning and donations from many local individuals and businesses, the Ag Center became a reality. This vision created a building with a working milking parlor, a milk room, bathrooms for exhibitors, a modern cattle washing area and a large area for agri-businesses to The AG Center exhibit their products The actual construction and educate the general public about the impor- and design of the building was performed by many tance of agriculture.
local businesses such as Fort Miller Group, Agway, Dairylea, Stewarts, Capital
Tractor, Big Green Farms, Doug Weaver, DJC Enterprises, Premier Delaval and M o r e h o u s e Construction. Listed on the wall of today’s building are other major contributors who made this vision possible. This idea has evolved into the present “Ag Center Building”. At today’s Ag Center a fair goer can experience the dairy industry from milking, cooling of the milk, to tasting products from Cabot Cheese, Battenkill C re a m e r y and Stewarts. The Ag Center page of the fair program contains all the activities and exhibitors at this year’s fair.

FFA presents the Famland and more The FFA Farmland is one of the best-known attractions at the Washington County Fair, with its collection of kid-friendly farm animals that are enjoyed by fair-goers all week long. Organized in 1928, FFA, originally Future Farmers of America, is a national student organization dedicated to developing their potential for leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The Washington County Fair is the highlight of the year for these students from high schools throughout Washington County who will be sharing their knowledge and love of agriculture with visitors. While the FFA Farmland is their “home base,” FFA members can be found throughout the fair. They will be there with their cows, sheep, pigs, goats and show horses. They’ll be in the Toy Tractor Barn and at the opening ceremony. The Washington County Dairy Princess and alternates are FFA members. Erin Armitage, the District 3 president from the Greenwich FFA, will be presenting the FFA’s involvement with the fair at the opening ceremony. “They’re very involved everywhere,” said Betsy Foote, FFA advisor for Greenwich. “From the very beginning of the fair, FFA students will have a very full week.” It takes a lot to be involved with the fair, but Foote said the FAA members love it. Each of the schools invites school administrators, staff
FFA member Tyler Ziehm showing chicks.
FFA member Olivia Snell with piglets. and teachers to take tours around the fairgrounds, led by their FFA members. Students talk about their involvement with their animals and all the work that goes into their exhibits. “It’s the students who lead
the tour, which gives them a great leadership opportunity in speaking to adults,” Foote said, “and it’s a great way for the adults to see what these students are doing outside of school.” FAA students also clean
and feed the animals throughout the week-long fair while educating and interacting with the public. They encourage visitors to ask questions. “Visitors are more likely to ask kids questions that the adults,” said Foote. “They believe the kids - it’s a good interaction.” It’s the animals that bring people into the FAA building and while they’re there, Foote hopes they will gain an appreciation for agriculture. In addition to a busy fair schedule, many of the FAA students also juggle sports practice during the fair as the dates coincide with the beginning of sports season at area schools. “Students are getting up very early, sometimes as early as 4 a.m.,” said Foote. They wash and feed the animals and get their beds cleaned out before going to schools as far away as Granville, Cambridge and Hartford for sporting practice before returning to the fair for the rest of the day. “They do more before 9 a.m. than most people,” she said. “They have an incredible work ethic and dedication.” “They live for the Washington County Fair,” Foote said. Throughout the week, students make life-long friends with FFA members from other schools. “This is their summer vacation,” Foote said. “Maybe they don’t go to the beach but they go to the fair and all their friends come to the fair. “It’s a pretty neat vacation having your animals at the Washington County Fair. It’s a great opportunity.”

Museum, Schoolhouse Display Heritage Displayed at the Washington County Fair, the Farm Museum and Perkins Hollow School-house showcase artifacts and historical heirlooms from more than a century ago. “Each year we try to have a few different displays,” said Joan Prouty, education director at the museum. This year’s displays include one dedicated to butter making and include molds, cream separators and more tools unique to the process. “There are a big selection of butter bolds,” Prouty said. There will also be several special demonstrators throughout the week outside the museum. The demonstrations this year include a wood bowl turner, pottery, broom make and, new this year, John Bielik, a period paper marbler. Prouty explained that paper marbling is a form of aqueous surface design which mimics smooth marble and was primarily used in designing book covers. The Farm Museum is open on the fairgrounds from May through October and it illustrates aspects of agriculture throughout the county including dairy, poultry, potatoes, crop production and ice harvesting. Local farmers developed many tools to make their work easier and faster. Some inventions were very successful and yet others never made it off the local homestead. All of the farming implements in the Farm Museum collection were used or manufactured right here in Washington County. Additional authentic out-buildings moved to the museum complex include a corncrib, summer
kitchen, milkhouse and 1853 one-room schoolhouse complete with woodshed and outhouses. The Perkins Hollow schoolhouse has a storied history here in the county. It was initialed used for scholastics in 1853, continuing in that function until 1910 when it closed and was left untouched. It wasn’t until 1977 that the schoolhouse was donated and moved to the county fairgrounds. In 1984 the schoolhouse received the Washington County Historic Preservation Award and in 2010 it was recognized as a Landmark Schoolhouse and listed on the Country School Association of America National Schoolhouse Registry. The furnishings of the single room were the teacher’s desk and chair, another chair for company and charts used as teaching aids. There was also a low bench which could be used as an extra seat or moved close to the wood stove on a cold morning. A water pail and longhandled dipper stood at one end of the recitation bench. The Perkins Hollow Schoolhouse offers a multitude of educational programs from May through October. Courses include “Make their Manners,” which focuses on 1850’s etiquette and personal hygiene and health; “Schoolhouse” which replicates a typical class held during the 1850’s; “Springtime on the Farm,” which details spring activities which would have occurred on a farm during that era; and lastly “Harvest Time,” where students learn how to harvest crops with modern tools – modern for the 1850’s leastways.

Visit the Dairy Princess at the fair Carlee McGreevy the 53rd Washington County Dairy Princess is unlike most Princesses. Carlee of Hartford New York started her agricultural journey working on a local dairy farm in her hometown of Granville milking cows. This is where her already great love for animals grew in size from household pets to heifers and hens. It was caring for these beautiful gentle creatures she realized her true passion for the industry. While she didn’t grow up on a farm and does not own her own dairy animals she is still an amazing advocate for all Dairy Farmers across the county, with a vast knowledge of animal care and production due to her experiences. Carlee aspires to be he best voice heard by all groups to inform all on the health benefits of dairy products and the importance of dairy farming that comes along with it. Working towards her future goals Carlee now is a Kennel Worker at her local
Carlee McGreevy Veterinary practice. There she walks, feeds, and cleans
up after animals in need of care. She wishes to attend
college earning a degree in Veterinary Technology then continue working with animals both large and small. Carlee’s role as her counties princess entails participation in parades throughout the county, holding school programs to inform children on dairy knowledge, attending farmer meetings, holding a booth at the Washington County Fair, and other community events. Her and her team of alternates Hannah Monroe, of Hartford and Lauren DeSorbe, of Greenwich attend community events such as farmers markets to reach out to the public. They spark up any conversation that comes there way to answer any questions and inform the public to the best of their abilities. Carlee and her team are thankful and appreciative of all support they are given from Farmers and any member of the agriculture community in their hard work of promoting the Dairy Industry in both an online and personal presence.

The Big Push Birthing Center Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26, 2018 Witness the miracle of life unfold, at The Big Push Birthing Center - Washington County Fair. Visitors to The Big Push Birthing Center, located inside the dairy judging tent, will get a first-hand look at the beauty of new life that farmers get to see on their farms many times throughout the year. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn how our cows are cared for and how we raise them to be strong and healthy. The Big Push Birthing Center is staffed by volunteers experienced with caring for dairy cows. They
will answer questions from visitors and will keep the animals comfortable and safe. An experienced herdsperson and a veterinarian are on staff to assist the cows with the birthing process. The Big Push Center will be open from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday and Sunday. It is our hope to have a total of six births over the weekend, but much will depend on Mother Nature. This is a free exhibit for fair goers of all ages and gives them the opportunity to witness the miracle of life unfold.

Fairgrounds home to more than fair Every year thousands of people flock to the Washington County Fair to revel in the joy and entertainment of fair week. It’s estimated upward of 120,000 people filter through the turnstiles every August. But there’s a lot more happening at the fairgrounds than just the fair itself. While no other single event can boast of such large crowds, the fairgrounds remain a busy place throughout the year. For seven months of the year, from April through October, the fairgrounds play host to a variety of notable events. The Washington County Antique Fair and Flea Market spends two weekends a year at the fairgrounds— the first weekends in May and August—and features more than 200 vendors from throughout the United States and Canada. Dealers sell a variety of rare antiques, hard to find collectibles and a myriad of crafts. And because the show is traditional-
ly held a week before the Brimfield, Mass., antique show, there are many items that appear for sale for the first time. The 2019 shows will be held the first weekend in May, and the first weekend in August and feature vendors in both indoor and outdoor venues. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is also an “early buyer” pass, which gives guests access to the show during setup on Friday. To learn more visit fairgroundshows.com. For the past four years the fairgrounds have hosted the Adirondack Wool & Arts Festival, a two-day celebration featuring more than 120 vendors from throughout the Northeast. The weekend includes workshops, demonstrations, livestock shows and much more. This year’s event will be held on Sept. 22 & 23. For more information, visit www.adkwoolandarts.com
Other notable events held at the fairgrounds are the Tour of the Battenkill, America’s largest one-day Pro/Am cycling race, and the Friends of The Washington County Grasslands IBA (Important Bird Area) Winter Raptor Festival. The fairgrounds also host a number of smaller events by local groups and organizations. Horse, cow and rabbit shows, dog agility trials, livestock sales and other agricultural events are held there throughout the year. Local Scout groups and 4H clubs often hold events at the fairgrounds, and the Washington County Seniors held their annual picnic there last month. The grounds are also available for family reunions, wedding receptions, corporate events, fundraisers and other private events. To learn more about the events held at the fairgrounds or to inquire how you could hold your own event, visit washingtoncountyfair.com.

Milking Cows at the Fair Most of the dairy cows at the fair are milked in the milking parlor at the Ag center. The milking parlor itself has stalls for 12 cows which work independently of each other. Visitors at the fair can watch the cows being milked and also see how the milk is cooled and stored before being picked up by Stewart’s in the early morning hours. In preparation for fair week, the parlor is made ready for Delaval, Archdale Agricultural Products, and the fair staff. They will make sure all systems in the parlor are ready to go – from proper cooling temperatures, washing cycles, and the milking equipment itself. The Department of Ag and Markets also inspects the milking system before the Fair. Parlor operators, Craig Hansen and Mike Green, are in charge of the parlor during the week. They make sure it is ready for the over 100 cows that are brought into the parlor for milking every day. The Fair’s milk itself is cooled and tested for bacteria and antibiotics just like the milk from any dairy farm before it is transported and processed. During the fair milking times, local dairy farmers and fair staff are available at the parlor to explain the milking process and to answer any questions from fair goers about

Washington County Craft Beverage Corral and Tasting Washington County Craft Beverage Producers will host a tasting event in the County Bounty Building from 4:00 8:00 PM on Tuesday. There is a $5.00 fee for a wristband to enter the tasting area. Participants are limited to Washington County Craft Beverage producers; consisting of wineries, breweries, and cheese makers. Gerry Barnhart of Victory View Vineyards and Christopher Castrio from Argyle Brewing met with members of the Washington County Fair to discuss ways to showcase the region’s growth in the craft beverage industry, and their impact on Washington
County agriculture in the “farm-to-glass” movement. “We believe there is real potential to expand this event in the future,” said Castrio. “We do need to be very sensitive to the Fair’s long-standing no alcohol policy and family focus. We are confident we can do a good job by pooling our resources and working together.” The fair is pleased to be able to include this aspect of the county’s agriculture. A tasting corral will be created, with ID check station and wristbands. No other onsite consumption is permitted.

Where’s the Beef? Most of beef animals at the Washington County Fair are located in Barns 9 and 10. Shows take place on Thurs and Fri in barn 9 show ring. Beef showing differs from dairy as Western attire is worn and the person walks forward with the right hand on the halter and a show stick in the left hand. When posing or setting up the animal, the exhibitor must turn, face the animal, and switch hands on the halter and show stick. The stick is used to place the feet and scratch the belly of the animal. This takes practice and coordination. In the 1950’s there were only about a dozen beef ani-
mals at the fair and limited to Angus and Herefords. In those days the typical beef animal had a stout body and short legs. Today there are about 6-7 beef breeds shown totaling 80 to 120 animals making Washington County one of the larger county beef shows in the state. Cow/ calf classes are judged on how well the cow is doing raising the calf. As with dairy, each breed has its own characteristics. The beef exhibitors are always happy to answer questions about their particular breed and the beef industry in general.

Kids’ Power Wheel Demo Derby Head to the track to watch our youngest motorsports event participants in our first every Power Wheel Derby. Children from ages 3 to 8 years old will compete in two heats, driving their battery operated vehicles. The object is to pop the oversized balloons on their competitor’s car. This derby is fun and picture worthy. Driver profiles include fun information like “He loves to play with farm animals, trucks and tractors in the mud. He loves to get dirty. His favorite animal is a “piggy” and his favorite food is watermelon,” and “Lucas is in third grade and loves the color green. His favorite food is mac and cheese. He loves Godzilla and watching mom in the demolition derby!”
