Colonial Continued from front page guided tour, which features a collection of private homes, public buildings, historic sites, galleries and exhibits. Displays include a period fashion and accessory collection, quilts, antique tools and carriages and demonstrations of Colonial Crafts. Perhaps the most popular location on the self-guided tour is the Castleton Federated Church building where visitors can see the beautifully carved pulpit. The pulpit at the Castleton Federated Church is often considered the architectural masterpiece of Thomas Royal Dake, a prominent builder of the day. Dake’s influence doesn’t stop at the church, though. Many of the houses included on the tour have pieces of Dake’s architecture in them.
Wells Continued from front page through Aug. 18. “There will be entertainment nightly, rides for the kids … all the normal Carnival food of course – hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and peppers, fried clams, homemade French fries, jalapeño poppers, mozzarella sticks, fried dough and onion rings,” said Brad Saunders, organizer. He added: “We have a cake booth, pie booth, blanket booth, plush booth, birthday booth, ring toss, bingo of course, and more as well as our annual money raffle with drawings every night, and our famous dime toss.” Live entertainment will be featured throughout the week. Wednesday was the Whiskey River Band, Thursday will fea-
Another prominent building featured on the tour is the Higley House, which is a home base for the Castleton Historical Society. At the Higley House, tour-goers can look through displays including period fashion and accessories, quilts, antique tools and carriages. Members of Vermont’s Legislature will present a proclamation at 4 p.m. at the Castleton Federated Church followed by a presentation by William Hosley, who is director of the New Haven, Connecticut, Museum and Historical Society. According to the Castleton Historic House Tour’s website, “Hosley surveys the contributions of some of Connecticut’s legendary builders, men whose practical work helped give birth to a new architecture that was both worldly and nationally distinctive. Considered together, the profiles of specific builders form a group portrait of the emerging architectural
profession, and suggest how roots in the trades and the concept of “Yankee ingenuity” prepared Connecticut builders to be at the forefront of our new national architecture.” Hosley’s talk, which is free of charge, is a Vermont Humanities Council event hosted by Castleton Historical Society. It will be held at 4 p.m. at the Castleton Federated Church, 504 Main St. The Castleton Colonial Day Historic House Tour began in 1938 as a fundraiser, but today it has evolved into a community celebration of Castleton’s heritage. This year’s Historic House Tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors 62 and older, while children 12 and younger are free. The tours will be held rain or shine.
ture Green, Friday Reflection and Saturday Free Wheelin’. The final day of the carnival will kick off with antique tractor pulling at 10 a.m. There will be fun for the kids throughout the day including a sawdust pile and free pony rides from noon to 2:30 p.m. At noon there will be a chicken barbecue presented by Modern Woodmen of America. The menu is half a chicken, corn on the cob, coleslaw, potato salad, rolls, coffee, tea, and lemonade, and ice cream for dessert. A parade will step off at 4 p.m. This year’s theme is “Back to the 80’s.” Line-up starts at 2:30 p.m. at the Wellsmere Farm on Vermont Route 30, just north. Fireworks will cap off the carnival celebration on Aug. 18 at 9:30 p.m. “Our goal for this annual event is to be a celebration of
the community,” Saunders said. Added Saunders: “This event is about having a good time with your family and friends. It’s the belief of what the Woodmen stand for, helping our friends and family, and our community.” Admission is free. Unlimited ride passes are $15 daily. The Modern Woodmen of America is a life insurance company located in Rock Island, Illinois, with fraternal chapters across the U.S. The MWA Chapter 10244 in Wells is very active, with bingo as the main fundraiser for area charities. It helps build access ramps for those in need, houses the area food shelf, it donates $500 to 15-plus area churches annually, and just gave out more than $15,000 in scholarships to area students. Bread & Roses, Too “Hearts starve as well as bodies, give us bread, but give us roses.” This line from a 1911 poem by James Oppenheim was repeated by women marching for fair wages and safe working conditions -- women who often worked long hours alongside children in textile mills across New England. The 1912 “Bread and Roses” strike in the city of Lawrence, Massachusetts was a labor walkout of immigrant workers, men and women, from at least 20 countries. It was a two-month protest that turned violent, prompting parents to send their children away for safety, ultimately changing labor history. The poem continues, “...we battle too,
for men, For they are in the struggle and together we shall win...As we go marching, marching, we’re standing proud and tall. The rising of the women means the rising of us all.” Please join the Castleton Free Library as it examines timely themes through a series of events centered on the 2018 Vermont Reads book Bread and Roses, Too by world-renowned Vermont author Katherine Paterson. This accessible young adult novel tells the story of the “Bread and Roses” strike through the eyes of an ItalianAmerican girl and a runaway boy. The novel relates the journey of Rosa, who, along with Jake and other children, are
sent temporarily out of harm’s way to foster families in Barre, Vermont, as children actually were during the strike. Thanks to a generous grant from the Vermont Humanities Council, there are 75 copies of the book, available now, to circulate freely in the community. The library will be holding the first event, a general introduction to places and themes in the book, on Tuesday Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. The evening will include a visual presentation of period photos, film clips related to the strike, images of labor paintings by folk artists, and background on Katherine Paterson’s work. Participants don’t need to read the
book before this event, but those who have will be invited to share first impressions. Discussion topics will be generated for a more structured book discussion to be held at a later date. The program will end with informal social time, including homemade bread and recordings of labor songs. Pick up a copy of the book anytime, now or at the program. This program is free and open to all accessible entrance on the north side of the building. For more information email castletonfreelibrary@gmail.com or call 802-468-5574.

J.P. Murphy band to perform Art on the Green show Saturday in Manchester Thursday in Fair Haven Having the J.P. Murphy band close out the Fair Haven Concert’s summer series has become a bit of a tradition. This Irish band will be back on center stage Thursday, Aug. 16 beginning at 7 p.m. This is a free ice cream night, so you will want to get there early. J.P. Murphy was formed in early 1991, by Patrick Gray Sr. who sings lead and plays rhythm guitar or banjo as well as an occasional harmonica. His love for his Irish heritage, the words and music he grew up with, made it a natural choice for him to form a traditional Irish group. The band engages the audience and encourages them to sing and even dance along. One of the highlights each year is when the children in the audience are invited up to do the “Unicorn dance” for the song first made famous by the Irish
Rovers. So, bring your lawn chairs and blankets early to enjoy the ice cream and the toetapping, hand-clapping tunes. It promises to be a truly entertaining evening in one of Vermont’s loveliest venues. The concert committee would like to thank all the sponsors, donors, patrons, musicians, sound engineers, and many volunteers for once again making our summer concert series such a success. The concerts go on rain or shine. The rain location is the Congregational Church at the north end of the park. In case of inclement weather, call 802265-3010 ext. 301 to find out if the concert is moved indoors. Thanks to everyone for their support of another successful summer series. Hope to see you for the holiday concert in November and next summer for the 2019 series.

These rugs were practical and beautiful coverings for their cold wood floors. Anyone who is interested can try their hand at the braiding process. This program is free and should last about 1.5 hours. Then from 7-9 p.m., join the
library for the last dance of the summer. This fun, free dance is open to all, including families. There will be snacks and dance music (appropriate for all ages… young, medium and old.) Bring your old friends, make some new ones and have a great time. Visit the library’s website dorsetvillagelibrary.org for complete descriptions and more information on these events. The Dorset Library is located at 3331 Vermont Route 30 I nDorset.
