Museum Exhibit “Ground, A Reprise of Photographs from the FSA” by Bill McDowell, is now on view at the Bennington Museum. The Photography Division of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) documented rural communities throughout America during the Great Depression, directed by Roy Stryker, creating some of the most iconic images of the era. However, many of the negatives were “killed” by Stryker, often without any apparent reason. The exhibition arises from these hole-punched negatives. Drawn to the impact of the black hole, Bill McDowell, photographer and University of Vermont professor, focused on the transformation Stryker brought to the image. McDowell’s selection of images for Ground is from a particular group of photos taken by different photographers from 1935 to 1939. Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through October. Admission: $10 adults, $9 seniors and students over 18. Free for younger students, museum members or to visit the museum shop. Information: www.benningtonmuseum.org or 802-447-1571.
