Notice of Ordinance Adoption The Town of Fair Haven amended its Traffic Ordinance at a regularly scheduled meeting on August 14th, 2018. The Board amended Article 4 to change the speed limit of North Park Place, West Park Place, South Park Place to 25 miles per hour from 30 miles per hour. In the same Article, the speed limits were reduced to 25 miles per hour from Prospect Street to the intersection of North Main Street and 4A on Main Street, South Main Street and North Main Street. The ordinance shall become effective 60 days after its adoption unless a petition is signed by at least five percent of the voters of Fair Haven requesting voter approval as provided in 24 V.S.A. 1974 and is received by the Town Clerk within 45 days following the adoption.

Fun Continued from front page ed to Fair Haven Concerned, an organization in downtown Fair Haven whose mission is to prevent homelessness and hunger in the towns of Fair Haven, West Haven and Benson. “We’ve been trying to work with Jamie (Matta), the owner of Fair Haven Fitness, to try and get him to bring an event to the park.” Said Joseph Gunter, Fair Haven town manager, in an interview. “This is kind of what showed up from that conversation.”

Gunter says that he plans to try to join the competition, if he can get one more person for his four-person team. “I’ve seen the folks that work out over at Fair Haven Fitness, and the chances of me winning are slim to none,” he said with a laugh. “(But) it’ll be a good time.” Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the events starting at 10 a.m. The cost for attendance is $20 per person. Each team must have a team bandana, and their own team name, and can register with Fair Haven Fitness. The fitness center is also looking for volunteers to help cover the event.

It’s true. The FreePress is the only publication delivered to every home in Castleton!

Whitehall town-wide yard sale this weekend By Matthew Saari Friday is the last day of August and that means two things – summer is coming to a close and it’s time for Whitehall’s annual Yard Sale Days. The Whitehall Chamber of Commerce sponsors the weekend-long event that begins Saturday and runs through Sunday. Each day the sale starts at 9 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. Every year individuals

and businesses put out a plethora of stuff which may be treasure to someone else. “I always think of it as Halloween when you were a kid,” said Marge Mohn, sale organizer. “You go door-todoor and you get to meet people. I think that’s important too – the interaction between seller and buyer.” Mohn continued: “We get a lot of people; they should make a day of it, visit Skene Manor, which will be open for

lunch.” The items to be had range from everyday electronic appliance to clothes to rare and unusual knick-knacks and more. Mohn, a veteran bargainhunter, has seen an indescribable variety of goods for sale but perhaps the oddest sale item was a plant pot – complete with soil and plant. “The pot alone was worth it,” she said. “It’s like a treasure hunt.”

The weather may not be the most agreeable. The Weather Channel provides a forecast for Saturday of cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers and a high of 80 degrees; and Sunday is expected to be partly cloudy with a high of 80 degrees. Even if the weather is spotty, the yard sale will go on. For more information contact Mohn at 518-499-2435 or email times@nybiz.rr.com.

This is the fifth year sale locations will be provided on a map. As of press time there were 11 residents signed up and two businesses – including newly-opened Mattison’s Sport Shop – but Mohn said this should not deter prospective bargain hunters. “A lot of people don’t go on the map,” she said, adding that shoppers should wander through town to see what clandestine goodies can be found.

Castleton Library News

It’s transition time Summer is closing. Transitions (which happen every moment, relatively unnoticed) feel sped up and more significant. Just prior to this column being written, the sun set into Cape Cod Bay, the nearly full moon rose over dunes, and three brilliant planets illuminated the deepening sky (Venus setting with the sun; rosy Mars accompanying the moon, and Jupiter on an arc between the others) - a perfect evening of gratitude and wistfulness. Back in Vermont, kids will be riding school buses again (sand toys packed away), and the library will shift into a quieter mode, as summer reading programs end. But before we bid farewell to summer, a quick look back: we had potters, playwrights, a singing pirate, and rocks; rock music and a quarry tour; weekly Story Hour and Playgroup; and 116 people at our CLiF Grant Storytelling and Book Giveaway (watch for another CLiF event in November). Many thanks to Vermont Department of Libraries and CLiF for grant funding. Adults learned about dog language. And older school kids created a cool virtual tour of Castleton Free Library at their Maker Camp - check it out at this link: https://www.thinglink.com or visit our webpage - www.castletonfreelibrary.org to see the tour

In September we’ll be making room for new materials, including the rest of the 18-19 Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award titles (for 4th8th graders) and many books on the Green Mountain Book Award list for high school students. These lists encourage students to read from nominated titles throughout the year and vote for their favorite in April. We’ve weeded many older titles for space, and will be selling them at mini-booksales throughout the month, along with kids’ paperbacks. Concurrently, all of our youth VHS tapes will be on “free” tables. Please browse picnic tables in good weather, and downstairs indoor tables if rainy! LEGO Saturdays return in September. During our 10 a.m. to noon open hours, LEGO bins will be out with challenges to create particular designs or simply freebuild. It’s a great time to hang out with friends on rainy days while also stocking up on books. A reminder for the littlest patrons: Wednesday Playgroup at 10 a.m. and Friday Preschool Story Hour at 10:30 a.m. continue all year. We wish happy trails to some of our regulars as they enter kindergarten (we’ll miss you!), as we welcome and eagerly await new friends.

Church to Sunday services St. David’s Anglican Church of Poultney (more recently, Wells), for many years under the faithful ministry of the Rev. Alexander Stringer, will be resuming Sunday Services sometime this Fall. Stringer fully retired this past Easter but maintains an active interest in the affairs of the congregation, which over the years has dwindled in size. Pastoral duties of the church have now fallen upon the Rev. James Hogan, appointed to St. David’s parish by the Most Rev. Brian Marsh, Bishop of the Northeast Diocese of the Anglican Church in America (ACA), and Presiding Bishop of ACA. Hogan has Anglican roots on both sides of his family, and has for many years appreciated and benefitted from the ethos of historic Anglicanism. He is by no means new to the area and lives just north of Poultney. He has been serving at Hydeville Baptist Church on Route 4A since being called to that ministry in 2002. He was ordained to Christian ministry in 1986, and has been a pastor to churches in Western New York, Ontario and Vermont. Hogan is an avid student of the Bible, church history and theology, and during his formal schooling received training in Biblical Greek and Hebrew. Along with St. David’s, he shall continue his pastoral work in Hydeville, including leading worship there every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The time for Sunday Services at St. David’s is still undetermined, but will be scheduled for the afternoon and held at the Young at Heart Senior Center in Poultney. Hogan has been acquainted with Marsh since 2015. Over the last three

years he has found a second church home. He has been active in Diocesan affairs as both a participant and a speaker, and plans are now underway for him to receive his Ordination to the Diaconate in October. He has embraced his dual calling to both Hydeville and now St. David’s, believing the Christian Church to be bigger than any one denomination or jurisdiction. As Bishop Marsh has said, “it’s all God’s Church.” St. David’s Anglican Church and the Anglican Church in America are members of the worldwide Traditional Anglican Communion, which is independent of the Church of England and the Episcopal Church USA. The Traditional Anglican Communion and its member bodies strive to faithfully maintain historic Christian orthodoxy, and to uphold a Biblical morality in a world where even the most basic moral standards are being rapidly swept away. During Sunday worship, St. David’s will be using the 1928 edition (American version) of The Book of Common Prayer. Historic Christian orthodoxy will be evident at St. David’s. The Book of Common Prayer helps the worshiper to learn Christian truth through worship. It reminds the worshiper on every page of the truths of the Bible, thus helping the Christian to remain faithful to Jesus Christ during his or her spiritual journey through life. For anyone who wishes to be part of St. David’s future, or is just curious and would like further information, feel free to call Hogan at 802-265-2206. For those who prefer correspondence by email, his address is: jimhogan715@gmail. com. All inquiries are welcome.

Tickets for the raffle are only $10, available at the Carding Studio and Sculpture Center in West Rutland, Vermont; the Pine Grove Diner in Granville; Skelebar Studios in Hampton; Skene Valley Country Club; and Vermont Marble, Granite, Slate and Soapstone. The drawing will be held Saturday, Sept. 29 in Skenesborough Park in Whitehall at the Third Annual Sasquatch Calling Festival, during the Sasquatch Calling contest at 5 p.m. Ticket holders

Pember adds audio tour to exhibits Wonder what the story is behind the specimens in The Pember Library & Museum of Natural History? For some of them, the answer is now on your smartphone. Beginning earlier this summer, a new audio tour feature was put in place for 18 of the specimens. Bernadette Hoffman, museum educator at the Pember, said patrons just need to download the UniGuide app. You can find links to the app at www.audiotour.me or search for UniGuide on Google Play or the Apple store. With the app on your phone or tablet, look up the Pember. There are 18 files that correspond with tagged displays in

the museum. You’ll get to hear a short description of the species and if it’s a Pember specimen, you’ll get additional details. “It’s about a minute to a minute and a half of interesting information about that specimen,” Hoffman said. The best part of this new addition to the museum is the cost. “It didn’t cost us anything, which is great,” Hoffman said. “You can’t beat free.” The company makes money by selling advertising space on the app and provides the service without cost to the museum. The company even provided

Brewery opens on Granville’s Main Street Saturday By Krystle S. Morey The beer is brewed, taps are in and it’s finally time for Slate Town Brewing Company to open its doors. The brewpub, located at 31 Main Street in Granville, will open this Saturday, Sept. 1. “It’s time,” said co-owner Glenn Wetherell. After working nearly a year and a half to renovate the downstairs and exterior of the 1950’s row-style building, the plastic was removed from the windows Monday. There is still a bit of work to be done with upgrading the kitchen and

outfitting office and that focus studio space to just getupstairs, but ting the Wetherell and busidoors open,” she ness partner Susan said. Horace Greeley Symposium Oct. 20 Pember The 16th Annual Horace Greeley Writers’ Symposium will be held Saturday, Oct. 20 at the United Baptist Church in East Poultney, Vermont. Keynote speaker this year is filmmaker Stephen Ohl. He has written, directed and starred in many independent films. He coproduced and starred in The Longest Swim which was filmed in Poultney, Vermont on Lake St. Catherine in 2012. Currently he is working on a science fiction/comedy for Kinogo Pictures that is sched-

uled to begin shooting in December. Also speaking will be Bianca Amira Zanella, a Vermontbased performance poet. Her poems have appeared in The Rutland Herald, The Mountain Troubadour and The Reverie. She is the recipient of the 2014 Robert T. Marsh Memorial Prize for Excellence in Writing. She also hosts a monthly Poetry Open Mic series in Rutland. Special guest Debbi Wraga of the Northshire Bookstore

will also give a presentation on how to get your work published. Wraga is the Indie Publishing Manager at the Northshire Bookstore. Manchester Newspapers publisher John Manchester will talk about the life and impact of Horace Greeley and what the legendary journalist might think of journalism and the world today. For more information call 802-884-5803 or visit www.horacegreeleyfoundation.org

Continued from page 10 the signage for the displays. “It’s awesome,” Hoffman said. “We’re thrilled.” The program allows people to visit even if they cannot get to the museum in person. Through the app, a visitor can see photos of the specimens and hear the audio description, allowing people from outside the area to see what the Pember has to offer. The biggest problem

Hoffman said she faced was deciding which displays to choose. She went with some of the displays that are most popular, even if some of them are not local. “Picking the particularly animals was so hard,” Hoffman said. “We have the big Kodiak bear. It’s not a Pember specimen. But people always comment on the bear so it had to be on the audio tour.” The tour is now part of the museum and is available to the public without charge.

Slate Valley Trails to open news trails in East Poultney Get off the beaten path and try Poultney’s newly built mountain biking and hiking trails. Come ride Bumper Cars or Cliffhanger, stroll Maple Sugar, and join the fun Saturday, Sept. 1 as Slate Valley Trails invites the public to celebrate the opening of the new Fairgrounds trails. Beginning at 1 p.m. there will be a brief presentation, followed by guided mountain bike rides and hikes. Event and parking will be located at Town Farm Road. The Slate Valley Trails organization,

in collaboration with the generosity of private landowners, has added six new miles to their existing mountain biking and hiking network. Nestled in the bucolic fields and hills near Town Farm Road in East Poultney, the new trail system is near the area rumored to have been referred to as The Fairgrounds. Sustainable Trailworks has constructed mountain biking trails well suited for beginning bike riders as well as the experienced single track riders looking for a challenge. With this project, SVT is looking to complement the

existing trail systems in the slate valley and to address the growing enthusiasm for mountain biking. Hikers will also be able to enjoy the meandering paths through fields and forests. Hardy Avery, trail builder with Sustainable Trailworks, reports that this is phase one of the project. Additional trails are currently being built on the west side of Route 140. “Developing trails and promoting active lifestyles is paramount for a healthy and prosperous community” said Bill Alexander, member of SVT. “We’re partnering with schools, busi-

nesses, and other organizations in an effort to make the slate valley area that kind of community. Members are the key to our accomplishments and we encourage everyone to join.” Slate Valley Trails is a local, volunteer-based nonprofit established in 2015. SVT currently manages more than 20 miles of multi-use trails in Poultney, Wells and the surrounding area. Visit www.slatevalleytrails.org to become a member, donate, learn about upcoming events, and volunteer.

Dinner and music to benefit Haynes House of Hope A spaghetti dinner to benefit the Haynes House of Hope will take place from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 2 at the Modern Woodmen of American Hall in Wells, Vermont. The Perry girls will be in the kitchen serving up a scrumptious dinner featuring salad, bread and spaghetti with a choice of meat sauce or meatless, plus dessert. A beverage of soft drinks or

water is also included in the meal. The cost is $15 per person with takeout $10 per person without beverage. Music will be provided by Fritz Henry from 6 to 9 p.m. An accomplished singer/guitarist/ songwriter, Henry specializes in classics of folk, pop, rock and country-rock from the 1960s and 1970s. He has been seen on PBS, ABC, NBC and CBS, and

has opened for notables including Livingston Taylor, the Association and Marilyn McCoo of the Fifth Dimension. The Haynes House of Hope is a comfort care home for the terminally ill and their families. Since accepting its first patient in January 2010, Haynes House has served more than 60 residents. The resident’s stay and care are provided free of charge. Since Haynes

House receives no funding from insurance or government agencies, it is totally dependent on fundraising events, donations, grants and the generosity of the community to fulfill its mission.
