Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce recently named Ida Mae Johnson its 2018 Citizen of the Year. The Citizen Award will be presented to Johnson at an Open House reception to be held on Sunday, Oct. 21 from 2-4 p.m. in the Town Room at United Baptist Church on the East Poultney Green. The public is cordially invited to join the Chamber in honoring Johnson at the reception. Johnson was chosen by the Chamber for this award following nominations for numerous reasons witnessed, described and endorsed. Johnson is a long-time member of Poultney Woman’s Club and served as President of it for three years. She has also served as State Secretary of the General Federation of Woman’s Club; an international women’s organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. She continually works on promotional and organizational needs of the Poultney club for its many community events. Those include, but are not limited to, “Breakfast with the Easter

Bunny,” the Christmas season’s “Giving Tree” and “Breakfast with Santa” events and the July 4th “Petting Zoo.” An avid garIda Mae Johnson dener, she often contributes decorative floral arrangements for community events. She has aided with pre-event planning and hands-on help at musical events, church suppers, Welsh heritage events and Poultney’s 250th celebration planning. Johnson said that research and writing of grants for St. John’s and United Baptist Church’s restoration needs has been, and continues to be, a learning experience, as does also her volunteer time as the primary Editor of St. John’s Facebook pages. Johnson has “worked” endlessly as a volunteer on many events, projects and grants for needed repairs for several historic properties in Poultney. Saint John’s Episcopal Church
and its cemetery as well as historic United Baptist Church are two for which she has devoted endless hours. Each historic property is undergoing needed upgrades. These buildings are part of Poultney’s history which everyone feels a connection to, members and non-members alike, who realize the value of them to our community and its identity. Johnson has also willingly assisted other community non-profits and ecclesiastical institutions with questions they pose to her regarding grant options they may seek. She writes publicity releases and feature articles about Poultney’s current community events, its history and its historic buildings which are published in many periodicals. She has organized a collective history of United Baptist Church, East Poultney. She is a volunteer member of the board of directors of the
Horace Greeley Foundation. The Greeley Foundation is a Poultney non-profit which organizes The Horace Greeley Writers’ Symposium, an annual event in Poultney, Vermont which is a celebration of Horace Greeley’s life. The symposium explores the art of writing as presented by publishers and writers in the fields of literature, poetry, philosophy, and history. Johnson’s childhood years were in California; she has been a resident of Poultney since her early teen years. She graduated from Poultney High School and Middlebury College. She returned to the Poultney community after years of work in Vermont and New York locations. She worked In New York City for Time Life; in the President’s Office at Williams College and a career as a teacher of English, French and Art in both public and private educational institutions. She has taught children, teens and college students in educational institutions in Adams, Massachusetts; Middle Granville, New York; Vergennes; and Poultney, Vermont.

Johnson Continued from front page Having begun her life in Poultney as a young teen resident with her parents in historic Eagle Tavern, she has, while continually dedicated to educational studies, career, worldwide travels and volunteer projects, maintained an interest in Poultney’s history, writing, art, and its historic buildings. “I could have chosen to live anywhere, but Poultney is where I came back to and where I enjoy being”, she explained. She has and continues to share her knowledge, experience and time with the Poultney community. Living, continually learning and a lifetime of sharing her knowledge for the benefit of
the Poultney community, Johnson will be presented Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Citizen of the Year Award. The Chamber also invites past recipients of the Citizen of the Year Award to join with them for a 2018 group photograph to be taken of Poultney Citizens of the Year, to-date. The Chamber’s Citizen of the Year Award, presented annually since 1990, honors a resident citizen who has made major contributions to the betterment of Poultney; has distinguished herself or himself through outstanding service to the community and typifies the true spirit of service and selfsacrifice in representing the finest ideals of Poultney citizenship – a real “unsung hero” of Poultney. As Poultney’s 2018 Citizen of the Year, Johnson will be the
Grand Marshal of the 2019 July 4th parade in Poultney. Past award recipients are remembered in an historical accounting which may be viewed on the website of Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce. A continually expanding memorabilia scrapbook collection about past citizen award recipients will be available for viewing at the Oct. 21 reception. For more information about Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce or its Citizen of the Year Award, contact the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce at 802-287-2010 or email poultneyvtchamber@ gmail.com . The Chamber office is in the Stonebridge building which is located at 66 Beaman Street (Route 30) near its intersection with Main Street, East Main Street and Grove Street.

Letter to the editor
Poultney residents urged not to support Dollar General project Editor: Leonard Knappmiller of Poultney Properties LLC, who wants to develop a Poultney Dollar General, has massmailed an appeal to “Dear Poultney Neighbor,” asking citizens to petition the selectboard to support his proposal in the court now weighing the case - in opposition to Poultney’s Development Review Board, which rejected his zoning application for the development. He is simultaneously circulating a petition for a new zoning bylaw to transform the industrial zone, where the Dollar General would stand, into a mixed industrial-retail zone. We urge Poultney residents not to sign any statement supporting this project. We see no reason to ask the town to undo its decision. While he addresses us as neighbors, Mr. Knappmiller, of Rutland, attended only one of the five DRB hearings on
value of adjoining properties, and suck his project. In the letter accompanying patrons away from locally owned busihis petitions, he makes unsupported nesses. The claims: A jobs would Dollar Having a dollar store next door be few, and General open 98 hours weekly - would degrade low-end. would not The zonbe disrupthe adjoining neighborhood, decrease ing amendtive to the the ment he adjoining residential grand-list value of adjoining proper- seeks would change the neighborties and suck patrons away from industrial hood, would add value to locally owned businesses. We hope people won’t supdollar store next door - open 98 hours port it. weekly - would degrade the adjoining If Mr. Knappmiller sought a suitable neighborhood, decrease the grand-list

Light industry, bank, pharmacy - Poultney needs them all, but the Dollar General dominates the development foreground. Let’s get it off the stage and begin fostering an economic vitality that honors Poultney’s traditions and potential. Thank you to all our supporters Editor, FreePress: Summer is closing, and with that the summer services at St. John’s Episcopal Church, EastPoultney, have ended for another year. It has been a good year ending with a special choral Evensong. The Executive Committee of St. John’s wants to acknowledge the extraordinary effort of several individuals who made these services successful. Our organist for all services from 2014 through 2018 has been Dr. James Cassarino, Professor at Green Mountain
College and organist at Trinity Church, Rutland. He played music from the Renaissance through recent times on the original, hand-pumped pipe organ. He also donated a military chapel organ which was better for accompanying hymn singing. He gathered his musical friends to create a choir for our closing, Aug. 11, choral Evensong. On Facebook at St. John’s Episcopal Church, East Poultney, you may hear a section of this service. There are not thanks enough for his support. Our organ pumper is equally dedicated. University student, hidden out of sight and energetically sending air to the bellows and through the pipes, committed needed Saturdays for the same five years. Without his effort, we could not have enjoyed Dr. Cassarino’s playing of the amazing antique organ. Finally, great thanks to a woman who makes it her concern to keep Poultney aware of everything past, present and Welsh, Janice Bruso Edwards. She has not only publicized the annual Welsh service among her St. David’s Society and Welsh contacts in the larger area, she has created events and dinners on the same weekend to enhance atten-
dance at the Welsh-themed service. It was who created our Facebook page. She even managed the traffic on the front lawn. She is a superb supporter and deserves our best thanks. Much has been accomplished since 2013 to save a rare, unaltered worship space and to return it to its proper use. There is yet more to do. Our thanks, also, to all our silent supporters. We hope to see you next year. For the St. John’s Executive Committee, Ida Mae Johnson, Secretary

Friday celebration to feature crocheted baskets, canoes and more The Slate Valley Museum and the Pember Library and Museum will host a pair of events in celebration of First Friday on Sept. 7. Fiber artist Ardyce Bresett will be exhibiting her crocheted baskets at Pember First Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Bresett has turned mountains of unused yarn and “works-in-progress” into dozens of useful and attractive baskets. “I found myself buried in yarn - eight barrels of it, and resolved to crochet my way out,” she said. The baskets come in all sizes and can be used to store items all over the home: in the living room, they can hold mail, toys, remote controls, or magazines; in the kitchen you can dress up a potted plant, store fruit or vegetables, or serve bread at the table.
To round out the show, Cy Bresett will have his hand-built kayaks on display. “It all started with a book and a museum,” he said. “I was inspired to build by an exhibit of guide boats at the Adirondack Museum, and the book ‘Stripwood Canoes You Can Build’ showed me how. My first project was an 18-1/2-foot Stripwood that the Boy Scouts used to camp in the Adirondacks.” He has progressed to build even larger boats and even makes his own paddles! Megan Long of Blue Boot Farm in Middle Granville will be also be at the Pember First Friday with her jellies and salsas. She cans them from local gardens and offers tomato salsa, Lemon Verbena Chardonnay, Mint Riesling, Apple Cider, Habanero Ginger,
and Roasted Garlic jellies. Long recommends serving Lemon Verbena Chardonnay jelly with goat cheese. A special play list of music will be provided by Kris Gibson. Rumor has it that Elvis will be in the building. Across the Mettowee River, from 7 to 9 p.m., the Slate Valley Museum will host its Annual Auction Preview. Get a sneak peek of items that will be sold at the museum’s auction the next evening, Saturday, Sept. 8. First Friday visitors can leave a bid and take a chance at winning one of the many goodies donated by area businesses and community members before its annual auction, Cocktails on the River. All First Friday events are free and open to the public. Cocktails on the River runs from 6 to 9 p.m. 0n Saturday. A
live auction will start at 8 p.m. “I hope to see the community out for an enchanting evening in support of SVM. Weekend
of Mount Independence. On Saturday, the popular Baldwin Trail walkabout is back. From 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. visitors walk along the trail to meet reenactors and other experts who will discuss such topics as Revolutionary gunsmithing, an interactive laying out of a brigade, the life of the soldiers, building and defending the gun batteries, and more. Get your card stamped and win a small token if you visit all the stations. The event is open each day at 9:30 a.m., with the soldier’s camps opening at 10 a.m.,
closing Saturday at 5 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m. Reenactors offer military tacticals, camp life, and colonial skills and crafts. Special hands-on children’s activities are available both days. The military tacticals includes a woods skirmish with a guide you can follow. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons the public is invited to participate in the first Mount Independence Revolutionary history “mask”querade, focusing on the people who played important roles here.
Reenactors also will offer a new presentation on what they do and how to get involved. The “Strong Ground 5K Walk” on the site’s trail system is back for the third year on Sunday and benefits Mount Independence Coalition education and special programs for the site. Registration starts at 10 a.m. The $10 fee (cash or check payable to Mount Independence Coalition) includes admission to Soldiers Atop the Mount and a simple lunch in the picnic area. Call 802-948-2000 to pre-register. This
lunch is available for everyone for a modest donation. On Sunday there is a recreation of the July 1777 sermon by Rev. Thomas Allen encouraging the soldiers in the face of the British, a changing of the guard, and the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence, for which the Mount is named. Site interpreter and historian Paul Andriscin offers an illustrated lecture on “Reasons for Revolution” on Saturday and “The Northern Campaign” on Sunday, both at 3:30 p.m.
Continued from front page Campaign of the American Revolution. Event admission is $6 for adults and free for children under 15, and includes the museum. Call 802-948-2000 for details.
