Steampunk Fest The Enchanted City steampunk festival returns to Troy on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Celebrating its fifth year, The Enchanted City is an urban street fair and spectacle of steampunk fashion, fantasy and fabrications that will magically transform the historic blocks of downtown Troy into a “cosplay” alternative reality where Victorian fancy meets modern technology. The free festival offers a family-friendly inspired day of music, magic, games, performance, food and fantasy. An opening parade of Mad Machinery showcases ingeniously devised “mechanical conveyances” and the “Inventors Challenge” pits these machines against each other in races against time. One of the new additions this year includes a Mad Steampunk Art Show Gala with absinthe tasting on the eve of the festival. Housing Meeting Washington County will host a public meeting on Tuesday,
Sept. 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to review the Housing Transitions Action Plan. The meeting will take place at the Kingsbury Volunteer Hose Company in Hudson Falls. In June, Washington County kicked off a project to evaluate homeless housing needs and gaps throughout the county. The study is exploring housing challenges faced by homeless individuals and identifying recommendations for homeless and transitional housing for the county to consider and potentially pursue in partnership with existing service providers. The county will share preliminary findings and recommendations from the study and seek feedback from members of the community. Festival of Fire The annual Intercollegiate Festival of Fire will be held Sept. 21-23 at Salem Art Works. Friday’s activities start at 10 a.m. with demonstrations and speakers throughout the day. An Iron Pour Performance will take place at 8 p.m. The festival is a chance for artists from across the nation to come together to share techniques, ideas, and resources in iron casting, blacksmithing, ceramics and glass workshops. 22 SATURDAY Wool & Arts The 10th annual Adirondack Wool and Arts Festival returns to the Washington County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, 22-23 in Greenwich. Tour de Salem The Salem Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual Tour de Salem Flame
Fighters bike rides on Sunday, Sept. 23. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the first ride leaves at 8 a.m. The rides start and end at the carnival grounds on Archibald Street. This is not a race, it’s just a ride. Workforce Development Board Associate Director Part-time 20 hours per week $30K annual salary The Associate Director for the Saratoga-Warren-Washington Workforce Development Board (SWW WDB) serves as a primary staff support to the Executive Director on behalf of the Board and related committees. The WDB is an entity that recognizes local workforce needs of business, develops resources and services to address identified needs and coordinates a system of local services for both business and jobseeker customers. The Executive Director with the assistance of the Associate Director accomplishes this by assisting workforce system entities that engage business and business organizations, providing oversight of our local career centers and the associated use of federal workforce funding (WIOA) received for these efforts. In addition, the Executive Director and Associate Director also work with other local partner organizations in a collaborative process to assist local businesses, workers and job seekers. The Associate Director reports to the Executive Director and plays a support role in carrying out the direction of the Board. Duties include providing management & tactical support within the system. Additional specific tasks include the Associate Director engaging in employer outreach, workforce planning, assisting in the coordination of system services and coordinating WDB meetings. The Executive Director functions closely with the Associate Director and oversees the day to day work on behalf of the Board and regional workforce system. Minimum Qualifications: Associates degree plus 5 years’ experience related to business outreach, operations management or business administration. The ideal candidate will have experience with education/workforce programs, grant writing and project management. The position requires proven facilitation and communication skills along with basic computer proficiency including word processing, spread sheets, etc. Local and occasional regional travel will be necessary.
