Lake Bomoseen hosting Dog Dock Diving event By Adam Cook For the 11th time, dogs will take to the water at the Rutland County Humane Society’s Dock-Diving competition on Sunday, Sept. 16, at The Palms just off Route 30 on Lake Bomoseen. The competition, which usually draws about 40 dogs each year, was begun because of a beer distributor’s desire to promote one of their lagers. “It came about… because of a beer called ‘Flying Dog Beer’,” said Beth Saradarian, associate director of the Humane Society. “They actually came up with this idea of having a fundraiser for us where dogs are flying into the water.” The beer itself is no longer produced, but the idea stuck. Saradarian said the Humane Society brings in

The event is no longer hosted at the Lake House. In addition, in the past, two dogs competed against each other at a time. Now, it’s just one dog jumping at the time “The measuring system is much more accurate.” Saradarian said. “We’ve come a long way with the measuring and the overall execution of the event.” This is Stamp’s first year running the event, and she
says that there won’t be much change from last year. For Saradarian, the event is just meant to be fun. “There are some dogs that… they do it a lot, and there’s lots of backyard dogs that are like ‘woah, I don’t want to go into the water’,” she said. “It’s just a fun, opento-anybody kind of event.” All proceeds from the dockdiving competition go to benefit the Humane Society. Poultney Chili Cook-off The second chili-inspired event is set for Saturday, Sept. 29. pie contest. This year marks the 10th year of the Fair Haven Historical Society’s apple pie contest and apple decorating contest for grade school students. The pie contest is open to nonprofessional bakers. Rules of entry are as follows: pie must be at least eight inches in diameter, wrapped in plastic; majority of fruit must be apples; pie must be delivered to booth by 11:15 a.m. the day of contest; bakers are allowed to use own pans but the entrants must retrieve them after contest. Judging will be held at noon. After judging, pies will go on sale by the piece or the remain-
ing pie can be purchased too. There will also be apple crisp from the Wheel Inn available from 9 a.m. until gone – it goes quickly. For the decorating contest, entrants must use realistic foam apples that can be purchased from the historical society for two dollars. The reason for the foam apples is they prevent bees. All grade school students are eligible. Apples must be delivered to the booth by 11:30 a.m. Judging will be immediately after the pie judging. Apples can be picked up after 2 p.m. For more information or to pick up apples call 802-265-3010 ext. 8, 802-265-3843, 802-236-0171.

The end goal of the committee is to make Fair Haven a destination with amenities which will attract visitors and increase the quality of life for its residents. New England Impressions: Art and the Making of BAKER’S Regional Identity at Pawlet Public Library on Sep. 16 BURNER On Sunday, Sep. 16, at 3 p.m., the Pawlet Public Library hosts Vermont Humanities Council Speaker William Hosley, whose talk explores New England Impressions: Art and the Making of Regional Identity, 1885-1950. An exhibit of paintings, prints and photography of Pawlet and the region from the library’s permanent collection complements his presentation. Hosley, a collector, photographer and preservationist, talks about generations of aspiring New England artists who applied history, landscape, environment and traditional industries as subject matter and muse. By drawing inspiration from their environment, the artists helped shape New England’s image at
home and abroad. Some were realists, others impressionists, while many were drawn to genres of daily life. According to Hosley, what they shared was a reverence for place, past and seasonality, and ideas associated with New England’s epic heritage. Hosley tells the story of the painters, printmakers and photographers who pictured New England. The exhibit of the library’s art collection includes works by artists Bill Graveline, Eva Bowker, Dean Fausett, Janice Goehz, J. P. Jensen, and M. Brown and by photographers Peter Miller, Neil Rappaport, Stephen M. Schaub, and Glen Munson. “The artwork has been display on various walls of the library for several

years. This program presented the opportunity to display it as a whole collection with more interpretation about regional identity,” says library director Mary Lou Willits. Hosley’s Vermont Humanities Council program will be presented on the handicapped accessible main floor of the library. The exhibit, which runs through December, will be on display downstairs in the Waite Room. The Pawlet Public Library, housed in a renovated historic grammar school building, is located at 141 School St. in Pawlet. Bourbon to perform in Tinmouth The Old Firehouse season in Tinmouth opens with Claude Bourbon, a French-born guitarist, on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Suggested donation of $10-15, 90 percent of which goes to the musicians and 10 percent to the town to maintain the Old Firehouse. Local groups provide refreshments. Your donations support their activities. Bourbon grew up in Switzerland, where for a time he was classically trained in the guitar. He soon felt the need to explore the guitar without the limitations of written music and delved headlong into folk, blues, jazz and rock music. Now based in the UK, he has
become a world-renowned player, highly acclaimed for his finger-picking style—plucking, picking and strumming at such speed that his fingers seem to appear just as a blur. His music utilizes strains of folk, western, jazz and blues through such melodic delights as the traditional English Dance and the hypnotic Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo. He sings as well, and his vocals that display his slightly gruff, worldweary voice. Although he has toured extensively in the US, this is his first trip to Vermont. The Old Firehouse is on Mountain View Road just a couple of hundred feet south of the intersection with Vermont 140.

Song of the Vikings presentation in Castleton Rally Sunday Celebration Sept. 16 Soon the winds will shift. As we button up, perhaps we’ll hear whispers or howls in that northeast wind. Perhaps we will think about foamy waves and icy land and ancient stories told around fire. Join us at Castleton Free Library on Thursday (Thor’s Day), Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m. for “Song of the Vikings: The Making of Norse Myths,” a free presentation by award-winning author Nancy Marie Brown. “Like Greek mythology, Norse myths are still with us, inspiring storytellers from Tolkien to Neil Gaiman, Michael Chabon, and A.S. Byatt. Surprisingly, most of what we know about Valhalla and the Valkyries, Odin and the Well of Wisdom, the Mighty Thor, and Ragnarok or the Twilight of the Gods was written by a 13th-century Icelandic chieftain, Snorri Sturluson... Brown brings the fascinating story of Sturluson’s life into
focus, drawing on newly available sources and illuminating the folklore and pagan legends of medieval Scandinavia,” in this Vermont Humanities Speakers’ Bureau program. The speaker, now from Lyndon, Vt., was a Penn State science writer who turned to books, with six general interest titles and a young adult novel to her credit, including the 2012 book on which this program is based. She describes her interests - “I like extremes: Science and sagas. Science and faith. History and fantasy. The Dark Ages and modern times. Fire and ice. My books combine extremes. They ask what have we overlooked? What have we forgotten? What knowledge must not be lost?” She has spoken previously in our area on the Lewis Chessmen, walrusivory Viking figurines found in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides in the 1800s. Writing about Song of the
Vikings, a Boston Globe reviewer said, “Nancy Marie Brown has taught me that the roots of this part run deeper than I knew - down through “Norse Gods and Giants” to the imagination of a gouty poet, historian, and lawyer drinking beer in his hot tub eight centuries ago.” And Patrick J. Stevens, curator of the Fiske Icelandic Collection at Cornell University said Brown’s work “…confirms the indelible signature of this sophisticated people on the texts of our global civilization, from Wagner and Tolkien to Thor (Marvel Comics)...” and belongs in the hands of every discerning student of Western civilization. This program is open to all and accessible via parking on the west side of the library on 638 Main St. Questions? Contact Mary at (802) 468-5574 or castletonfreelibrary@gmail. com.
Twig Remembers Tony Poalino He made the best Italian grinder ever. He put all those spicy Italian meats and everything good Italian in it. His younger brother, Junior, and his wife, Shirley, ran a florist business in Fair Haven that was my favorite stop for selling ads for my dad’s newspaper, and then it was my paper. And after that, I still cherished the visits when I sold for “The Fair Haven Promoter”. When it was my dad’s paper, Tony’s dad “Pop” was working there. I spent seven years at St.
Peter’s school in the Italian district of Rutland. All of my friends’ parents spoke broken English and “Old Pop” reminded me of them. Going home from school, if I had some extra cash, I would stop at “The California Fruit” for a “super duper grinder” and a visit with Tony. Now it’s 20 years later at “Poalino’s Florist” and Junior is telling me that when he was in high school, he used to go over to work for Tony. He was downstairs counting bottles and
he dropped one, so he quickly cleaned it up and figured he was ok. It was a Saturday, and Tony and the wife were upstairs running the busy store. In that week’s paycheck, Tony had deducted two cents for the bottle. It was that “close with the pennies” and the very good business sense that got Tony a lot of money through the years. God Bless Tony Poalino – one of those many great Italian men in my life. You get what I mean… “Twig Remembers”

The event will be a first glimpse of potential solutions to concerns brought up over the last few months and will also be an opportunity for residents to engage with the committee members as well as representa-
tives from DuBois & King. On hand will be mock-ups of possible improvements, as well as data collected over the past months. We encourage the community to come out and participate in the shaping of downtown Fair Haven. Paul D. Allen-Webber, Innkeeper

Revitalization committee to host forum Fairy house program The Fair Haven Downtown Revitalization Committee will host a community forum, in the park, on Sept. 16, 2018 from 3-5 p.m. The event will feature make-your-own sundaes while members of the committee are on hand to listen to ideas, suggestions, and feedback. On display will be possible solutions to economic development, parking, traffic, and beautification concerns raised during the group’s survey collection during July and August.
As part of a grant, the town of Fair Haven has hired consultants Dubois & King to use information provided by the committee to make recommendations in three areas: traffic Calming, economic development, and downtown beautification. This forum will showcase ideas for downtown improvements, review options, and give residents an opportunity to provide input. The purpose of the committee is to give input to improve the safety of pedes-
trians and motorists, revitalize economic development, improve parking, and make the town more beautiful. The committee aims to make Fair Haven a destination with amenities to attract visitors and increase the quality of life for its residents. Flea market event to help veterans By Krystle S. Morey Still have a few boxes of those dishes and clothing you didn’t sell during town-wide garage sale weekend? Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1653 in Granville is hosting a flea market at its pavilion on North Street in Granville, NY. Buyers and sellers alike can visit the sale, which is slated for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 22. Shoppers can enter for free. “There’s no cost to browse,” said Wayne “Butch” Hurlburt, local post commander. Various items from books to furniture and tools to clothing will be available for sale. Vendors can rent space inside or outside on the lawn for $15. Some tables will be available, but it’s recommended sellers bring their own. “I have a limited number of tables, so it’s first-come, firstserve,” Hurlburt said. He said anyone is welcome to set up a table to sell items. “They can sell new or sell
old,” he said. “We’re going to make a little bit, they’re going to make a little bit…,” Hurlburt said. The VFW is also accepting donations of items for it to sell at the flea market. Hamburgers, hot dogs and various beverages will be sold as well. There will also be a basket raffle with winners announced at 3:30 p.m. Proceeds from the donated items, vendor fees and food will benefit the VFW building fund,
for upgrades at the pavilion and roof repairs at the VFW post; and scholarships awarded to local students. This is the second year the VFW has hosted its flea marketstyle fundraiser. Last year’s inaugural event, which featured nearly 25 vendors, made $1,100 for the organization’s building fund. To donate items or to reserve a space, call the Post at 518-642-1599 or Hurlburt at 518361-0185.
Incredibly, the lost site of American history lay hidden and untouched for over 200 years until its rediscovery in April 2013. Butz’s lecture weaves together several themes: the tale of the present-day archaeological investigation, the history of the settlement, the story of Shays’ heroic life; his role in the infamous Rebellion; and his impact on American law. Butz created a public education project about the settlement, which includes a summer archaeology field school at the sites. Over 100 students have participated in the program thus far learning techniques in archaeological fieldwork, surveying, mapmaking and digital imaging by taking part in the scientific study of the settlement. For more information visit: shaysettlement. org
“The story that lies behind Shay’s Rebellion is an important American tale. Steve is an amazing researcher and we look forward to having him at SVM to tell the story of Daniel Shay,” said Krista Rupe, executive director at the Slate Valley Museum. The Slate Valley Museum is handicap accessible and is located at 17 Water St. in Granville. There is no charge to attend, though a free will donation may be made. Refreshments will be served. Steve Butz will have a book by the same title available for purchase at the presentation. It can also be purchased at the Washington County Historical Society Bookshop. For more information call the Washington County Historical Society at 518747-9108 or the Slate Valley Museum at 518-642-1417.

Revolutionary lecture in Granville Sept. 25 Educator, writer and archaeologist Steve Butz will give a presentation on the Shay’s Settlement Project: A Story of Revolt and Archaeology” based on his research on the life of Shay and his followers after the Rebellion. The talk will be given on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the Slate Valley Museum in Granville. It is co-hosted by the Washington County Historical Society and the Slate Valley Museum. Butz will speak at 7 p.m. The Shays’ Settlement Project is the first formal archaeological study of the ruins of a fortified 18th century settlement, considered the most significant archaeological site in Vermont. The settlement was founded by Captain Daniel Shays and his fellow refugees, who fled from Massachusetts following the uprising he commanded there in 1787.

‘Slate-Scapes’ exhibit opens Sept. 21 at Slate Valley Museum The Slate Valley Museum offers visitors the chance to explore the natural beauty of slate across our region through the powerful photographs of local artist and outdoor enthusiast, Chuck Helfer. SlateScapes opens during a special reception on Friday, Sept. 21 from 6-8 p.m. “Slate is the dominate feature of the Slate Valley. It underlies our hills and valleys in addition to being a leading industry across the area over the last 180 years. This project took me many places throughout the valley to explore the theme of slate on the landscape,” says Helfer. In putting together this body of work, the artist considered how the natural resource of slate has and continues to shape the landscape of our valley. Helfer has lived in Poultney, Vermont for fifteen years following his retirement as a federal employee from national service programs such as the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps. He grew up around gold mining in the California deserts and began carrying a film camera as a teen. Since living in Vermont, he has been an active photographer producing images for nonprofit and governmental agencies such as The Nature Conservancy, Vermont State Historical Parks, and the National Park Service. “Chuck’s show last year was so impactful across our community. We are excited to be bringing his work back to SVM, espe-
cially as this collection of photographs offers a fresh perspective on just how slate and slate mining has shaped the landscape of our unique region. Through this exhibit, SVM also looks forward to celebrating the strength and beauty of slate as a natural resource,” says Krista Rupe, executive director of Slate Valley Museum. Helfer previously displayed his work at Slate Valley Museum in an exhibit entitled Rock Work during 2017, which served as a modern photo survey of what it is like to work in the slate industry today, and captured the daily life of workers and operations in slate mills across the Slate Valley region. This former exhibit gives an artistic nod to area photographer, Neil Rappaport. Now, Slate-Scapes serves as the sequel to Helfer’s first exhibit at Slate Valley Museum and offers both new and returning visitors the chance to explore slate mining from an artistic and environmental vantage point. This exhibit will be on view through mid-November 2018. Slate Valley Museum is pleased to offer visitors the opportunity to purchase reproductions of these stunning photographs. This exhibit was made possible by the generosity of New England Slate Company and the Vermont Slate Quarry Association. For more information, please visit slatevalleymuseum.org.
