Festival of Fire The annual Intercollegiate Festival of Fire will be held Sept. 21-23 at Salem Art Works with an Iron Pour Performance on Friday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. The festival is a chance for artists from across the nation to come together to share techniques, ideas, and resources in iron casting, blacksmithing, ceramics and glass workshops. Keynote speakers throughout the weekend will include Jason Hess, ceramics; Grant and Erin Garmezy, glass flamework and Jay Wholley, iron. Jordan LaMothe will present a blade forging demonstration on Friday and glass demonstrations will take place on Saturday. Free and open to the public with opportunities to participate in workshops for an additional fee. Balloon Festival The 46th annual Adirondack Balloon Festival will be held Sept. 21-23 at the Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Queensbury. Gates open at 3 p.m.

British military facility at Fort Edward was a major part of it. Each year in the last weekend of September, the Rogers Island Visitor Center of Fort Edward hosts a French & Indian War Re-Enactment. About a hundred people participate, all dressed in the uniforms and clothing of the day and equipped with arms and supplies typical of the period. Battles are fought with real flintlock rifles and heavily armed rowboats of the British Navy are in the waters of the Hudson River along Rogers Island. There are also Indian allies taking part. The Shays’ Settlement Project is the first formal archaeological study of the ruins of a fortified 18th century settlement, considered the most significant archaeological site in Vermont. The settlement was founded by Captain Daniel Shays and his fellow refugees, who fled from Massachusetts following the uprising he commanded there in 1787. Incredibly, the lost site of American history lay hidden and untouched for more than 200 years until its rediscovery in April 2013. Opera A new American opera, “The Falling and the Rising,” will be presented at Hubbard Hall in Cambridge by the Seagle Music Colony on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. for two shows only before it begins a nationwide tour. The opera is based on the true stories of dozens of active duty soldiers and veterans. It chronicles the imagined journey of a soldier suspended inside a coma after a roadside attack as she makes her way through a coma-induced dreamscape punctuated by powerful encounters with other fellow service members, each on the brink of discovery. Together, they must find clarity, consciousness and communal hope inside a strange and ever-shifting universe.
