Poultney hosting annual celebration Saturday The Poultney Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for their annual fall town-wide yard sale on Oct. 13, rain or shine. Sixty vendors have registered so far for prime real estate on Main Street, and there are more slots available. “There’s more slots Vendor spaces left,” said still available chamber member for purchase Nina on Main Street Corbin. “We have almost 90 slots on the whole Main Street.” Each vendor space on Main Street is $20, and the space is 15 feet by 10 feet wide, with depth being from the side street curb to the sidewalk. Spaces can be picked out at The Original Vermont Store or at Brenda’s Hidden Treasures in Poultney. Businesses that turn out for the event include jewelers, craftspeople, food vendors, and people who just want to sell stuff from their houses - and not all of them are from Vermont. “Some come from Connecticut, a couple come from New Hampshire, New York,” she said. “So it’s not just the Vermont area.” The yard sale is to benefit

Dan and Holly Boyce of Benson are pictured with their award-winning 2,017 pound pumpkin. In fact, the pumpkin is a new Vermont State Record and the first to weigh more than one ton. The pumpkin grew from the size of a walnut to more than one ton in 86 days. The couple knew in August they had something very special in the pumpkin patch. Often, they report, the pumpkin grew by 50 pounds in a day. They recently took the giant pumpkin to the Topsfield, Massachusetts Weigh-off. The Topsfield Fair is the oldest and most prestigious pumpkin weigh-off site in all of New England The recordsetting pumpkin will be on display this Sunday from 1 - 3 p.m. at Leapfrog Nursery School for everyone to view and enjoy during Poultney’s pumpkin festival. Forum on Vermont’s proposed carbon tax Thursday in Wells Vermont’s proposed Carbon Tax will be discussed during an interactive forum at the Modern Woodmen’s Annex in Wells on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 7-9 p.m. Bob Hedden, president of the Hedden Company, a full-service management consulting, research, and education firm specializing in Efficient Home Heating, will moderate the forum. Senator Brian Collamore will provide insights into the formation of the proposed bill and forecast its effects on Vermonter residents and on both Vermont and New York businesses. Matt Cota,
the Executive Director of the Vermont Fuel Association will forecast the expected impacts on homeowners and commercial industries. Farms, slate and trucking industries will be featured in the discussion. With the conclusion of brief highlights by panelists, the forum will be opened to the public for questions and an interactive exchange of information. School Continued from front page in the proposed changes. The plan would reconfigure district schools serving grades sixth through eighth. Seventh and eighth grade students could potentially occupy a separate wing in the high school building. Sixth grade students at Castleton Village School would attend Castleton Elementary. ple have their yards open on the side streets as well. In addition to being beneficial to the chamber, Corbin said the event is beneficial to businesses. “It gives businesses a chance to get some new customers,” she said. One of those businesses is the Poultney Rescue Squad Thrift Shop. Although its grand re-opening is not scheduled
until later this month, there will be a tent sale outside the thrift store on the day of the yard sale. The store will be open as well. The yard sale is set to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Profits from the lots rented on Main Street go to benefit the chamber. For more information, call the chamber’s office at 802 2872010.
through 12. The change would increase the school by 163 students given this year’s enrollment. The grade reconfiguration would result in space being available at Castleton Village School that could open the door for a birth to Pre-Kindergarten center for the region. Castleton University, which announced its new Early Childhood Lab as part of the Early Childhood Institute in July, presented a plan to the SVMUUSD board which included leasing the school. SVMUUSD, like many other
school districts, is challenged to provide high-quality educational opportunities in the face of declining enrollment. Currently, filling teaching positions is problematic, as is fielding full middle school athletic teams. With an expansion to the high school, the burden of filling multiple same-subject positions would diminish, creating opportunities to add additional classes and programs. Seventh and eighth grade athletes would enjoy full rosters, supporting the stellar athletic program at the high school. Savings through the reduction of operating costs at Castleton Village School could be directed to new student opportunities and support necessary renovations across the district to address deferred maintenance. According to Superintendent Brooke OlsenFarrell, the plan is under development. The next phase engages community and staff members in the conversation. “We would like to include students in the design process of their middle and high school experience as well,” OlsenFarrell says.

Wells PTO hosting Fall Foliage 5K event Saturday The Wells Village School PTO is hosting their Fall Foliage 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 13. Proceeds will benefit the PTO. Kellie Sykes, PTO president, said this idea occurred while she and her running partner were out for a run. “About six years ago my running partner and I were running and were trying to come up with something to help the school community and do what we like to do,” she said, “so we started the Wells Fall Foliage 5K.”
The event starts at the school and takes participants around Wells Lakeside Park. Currently, there are 10 sponsors for the event, and 15 people signed up to participate, but sign-up can occur on the day of the event. “Our numbers have changed throughout the years,” Sykes said. “It really depends on the weather.” Sponsors for the event include Rutland Regional Medical Center, Wells Country Store and Vermont Traditional Builders.
The event offers medals and a raffle for participants, Sykes said. When participants register, they are given a tag that is put into a jar at the end of the 5K. Those tags are pulled and participants have a chance to win syrup, hats and running materials such as water bottles. The cost for registration is $15 for adults, $5 for kids, and $40 for families. Registration begins at the start at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. The event itself
starts at 9 a.m. Participants can pick up the registration form at the school and are asked to make checks payable to the Wells PTO and to return the forms to the school at 36 MWA Loop in Wells, Vermont. As for Sykes, her favorite memory is watching her kids. “My personal favorite of course is when my daughters come through the finish line,” she said. “But mostly just seeing the kids run through the line knowing they finished.”

Pat Dillon I just lost one of my best friends from my Williams’ Hardware Store days. Pat worked at McShane Pharmacy as a clerk. They had started a line of generic products and she was always checking labels and switching me to the lowerpriced items. In return, my boss, Bob Williams, would have special in-store (not advertised) sales and I would turn her onto them. Now, this was friendship enough until one day I tested her sense of humor and told

Greeley Writers’ Symposium next Saturday in Poultney Pen’s Ready: Annual Horace Greeley Writers’ Symposium is Oct. 20. In its 16th year of offering the writers’ symposium, the non-profit Horace Greeley Foundation, funded through donations and proceeds from Symposium fees, is dedicated to promoting the writer’s trade and the spirit of public oration that was central to Greeley’s life. The Symposium will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the United Baptist Church, On the Green, East Poultney. Registration for this event is $85, with a special student rate of $20. Registration forms are available online at: www.horacegreeleyfoundation.org. Registration forms can also
be found in brochures throughout the region, and at the Poultney Public Library. Onsite registration will be available at the event, as well. What is perhaps equally central to the mission is preserving the sense of place and memory of life in a small New England village. Each year, writers meet in those places where Greeley lived, worked, debated and voraciously read the books and journals that fed his intellectual curiosity. The Horace Greeley Writers’ Symposium is a celebration of Horace Greeley’s life. The symposium explores the art of writing as presented by publishers and writers in the fields of literature, poetry, philosophy, and history. This year’s keynote speaker
is screenwriter, director and actor Stephen Ohl who will give a presentation titled “How to Write for Film.” Ohl recently received his Masters’ Degree in Directing from the American Film Institute Conservatory in LA. Before that, he graduated from Boston University in 2011 with a BA in Film and Television. He has interned for director Louis Leterrier (The Transporter, Now You See Me) and producer Richard Gladstein (Finding Neverland, The Hateful Eight) He has written, directed and starred in many independent films. He coproduced and starred in The Longest Swim which was filmed in Poultney on Lake St. Catherine in 2012. This film was purchased by Echo Bridge
entertainment and is available on Amazon. Stephens’ short film, “Que?” earned third place in the prestigious Redstone Film Festival. His Thesis Film for AFI, White River Tales, which he wrote and directed, will be premiering at film festivals throughout the year beginning on April 14 at the AFI Expo 2018. Stephen will present a workshop for the aspiring screenwriter. Additional featured speakers include: John Manchester, “What would Horace think? Reflections on Horace Greeley, journalism and the world today.” Bianca Amira Zanella, “Against Poetry: When we lack the words.” Debbi Wraga, “Publishing
How To’s”, from Northshire Book’s Indie Publishing Manager. The Symposium is a dynamic day of learning and nurturing for writers of all ages, experience levels, and genres. This event draws writers and authors from across New York and New England to Poultney, Vermont every year. For more information, or a link to the brochure and registration form, visit the website at www.horacegreeleyfoundation.org or find the symposium on Facebook where you can also read about a Florida vacation rental raffle to benefit this 501 C3 foundation. Tickets are $5 each or $20 for five tickets; call Suanne at 802-884-5803 for further details or to enter.

The Friends of the Middletown Springs Public Library in conjunction with the Middletown Springs Historical Society will host a Sunday afternoon event featuring Yvonne Daley, a journalist, book author, educator, publisher and director of the Green Mountain Writers Conference. Daley will speak on Oct. 14, in the dining room of the Middletown Springs Historical Society at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome. In her writing, Daley has concentrated on issues at the heart of what it is to be living on this beautiful planet: the
environment, creativity, human rights, community, war and peace, resilience and healing. These subjects are always in the context with the human story as she employs real people’s stories to illustrate. In her most recent non-fiction book, Going Up the Country, Daley writes of the generation of hippies back-tothe-earth-landers, dreamers, and political activists who moved by the thousands into this tiny state in the 1960s and 1970s. In her talk, Daley will read from her book and discuss Vermont’s long history of attracting progressives and
free-thinking people who influenced this state, highlighting how this history is and has been an influence to new young people who are attracted to Vermont for her ideals which are rooted in its land and people. The event is located in the Museum on the green at 10 Park St, Middletown Springs.

Fall has arrived in full blazing glory, with shuffling and crunching underfoot, pumpkin flavoring everything from muffins to beer, sweet woodsmoke, and crocks of soup. October is a time to celebrate the natural world, food, coziness, and books – it is National Book Month, the time to “Fall into a Good Book” according to the National Book Foundation. At Castleton Free Library, we’re ready to help with your fall. Start in the cookbook section, where Mary recently ordered some titles such as “The New Essentials Cookbook” and “Food52 Genius Desserts,” or for people on the run, “Quick Fix Meals” which promises 200 delicious recipes. The National Day Calendar tells us that October is also the month for American cheese, apples, chili, desserts, pasta, pickled peppers, pizza, pork, sausages, seafood, spinach lovers, vegetarians, and cookbooks - you really can’t go wrong. That same calendar informs us that it is Squirrel Awareness Month, and a quick catalog search yields more than 25 kids’ books with squirrel information or characters. Head outdoors with your child to watch the pesky gatherers after browsing our parenting collection - titles such as “How to Raise a Wild Child” and “Homegrown: Adventures in Parenting Off the Beaten Path…” If your curiosity is

Fair Haven hosting special talk on Ethan Allen’s brother The Fair Haven Historical Society and the Friends of the Fair Haven Free Library are hosting a Charter Day event on Tuesday, Oct. 16 beginning at 7 p.m. Vincent Feeney will be visiting through a generous grant from the Vermont Humanities Council. The topic of his presentation is Levi Allen. Feeney has visited in the past and is a wonderful speaker. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the talk. Levi Allen was an outsider within his own family. Though he supported his brother Ethan at the taking of Ticonderoga, the two fell out during the American Revolution: Levi was a Loyalist. When the war ended, Ethan and Ira Allen recruited Levi as independent Vermont’s liaison with the authorities in British North America. In the end, Levi lost the support of his family and friends, dying a pauper in Burlington. Levi’s life presents a vivid picture of the turmoil that a prominent American family experienced during the formative years of Vermont and the American Republic. Please join us and help Fair Haven celebrate another Charter Day anniversary.

Historic guided hike Sunday in Orwell Step out on Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell for the last “Hike into History” guided walk of the year. The hike runs from 1-3:30 p.m., with Stephen Zeoli as your guide. Enjoy a dose of fascinating history and the vibrant autumn colors. The walk is included in regular admission of $5 for adults and free for children under 15. Wear sturdy shoes or boots, dress for the weather, and bring water. Zeoli is president of the
Mount Independence Coalition, the friends group for the site, and has been studying the history and grounds of Mount Independence for years. Mount Independence was one of the largest defenses built by the Americans for the Revolutionary War and is considered one of the best-preserved archaeological sites from the war. Construction started in July 1776, the Americans withdrew in July 1777 with the arrival of the British, and the British and
Germans were there until Nov. 8, 1777. Mount Independence is located at 497 Mount Independence Road, six miles west of the intersection of Vermont Routes 73 and 22A. For more information, call 802948-2000. The site is open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday, Oct. 14. Amanda Gustin of the Vermont Historical Society will provide background and share clips ranging chronologically from 1919’s Way Down East to 2005’s Thank you for Smoking. Pawlet student disciplined, sent to corner Sunday at the Braintree School open house in West Pawlet, Vermont teacher Miss Muhurin was forced to discipline an unruly student. Rumor has it the student was lobbing spit balls at the cute pony-tailed redheaded girl two rows in front of him, and he later referred to the teacher a “woebegone spinster.” The student was promptly sent to the corner by Miss Muhurin and told to sit on the stool and wear the dunce cap, which he promptly did. Officials later clarified he was disciplined for not paying attention and distracting fellow students. School officials hired Miss Muhurin in 1887 and said she is one of the best teachers in the Pawlet one-room school house network, but that she is a very stern disciplinarian. After a brief spell in the corner, Miss Muhurin told the student he could return to his desk. He was a model student the rest of the afternoon. (See full story on this page)

She was dressed in the teacher’s attire of the day and also lectured her “class” on reading and writing. Mrs. Muhurin even displayed the discipline techniques used in one-room school house days by sending fellow re-enactor and Pawlett Historical Society Board Member Keith Mason to the corner and told him to wear a dunce cap. The brick Braintree School building was con-
structed in 1852 at 9 Warren Switch Road. It was named Braintree because many of the settlers in that area of Pawlet had come from New Braintree, MA. The school was for students up to grade eight and was in operation for 84 years, finally closing in 1934. In 1973 the property was donated to the Pawlett Historical Society. That group did a major renovation on the structure: the floor was re-stained, the woodwork refinished and the walls and ceiling refinished with horsehair plaster, as used in the original 1847 buidling. The building is furnished with desks of the era along wih a wood stove, a teacher’s slate board and more.
