Wells food pantry planning Nov. 10 craft fair; vendors wanted By Adam Cook Michelle Bates knows what it’s like to go without. When she was a kid in the 1950s, her family of four was on welfare, and were hungry, though she said they never knew it. This drove her to start Our Neighbor’s Table in Wells, Vermont. “We have a tiny little cupboard,” she said, “but we’re extremely organized.” Bates said most food shelves in the state of Vermont belong to the Vermont Food Bank out of Barre. Our Neighbor’s Table is a network partner. “Ninety percent of our food comes from the Vermont Food Bank,” she said. “I can’t say enough good about the Vermont Food Bank. They are a wonderful organization.” Our Neighbor’s Table has been in existence for eight
fifth year,” she said. “The doors open at 7 a.m. for vendors.” The craft fair will be staged in a building right next door to the food shelf. Both buildings are owned by the Modern Woodsmen, who permit the food shelf to run at no cost. “We’re going to have a 50/50 raffle. There’ll be a lot of good vendors,” Bates said. “In the past, we’ve had tables with garage stuff. We’d rather have fewer vendors and more quality.” The craft fair is still looking for vendors. The costs are listed at $15 for a 6’ x 3’ table, or $20 for an 8’ x 3’ table. Electricity is available for an additional $5, and refreshments will be available for purchase. And while they have picked up a number of vendors, there is still room for more. In addition, there is another fundraiser that week.
years, Bates said. Before that, she ran another program called the Neighborhood Pantry Express. Using the building that the food bank is in now, the Vermont Food Bank delivered 5,000 pounds of food once a month, and she gave it out to people. That program got shut down because there wasn’t enough food to sustain it though they let her run an extra year until she got her food shelf up and running. “I went and I looked at a bunch of food shelves, even down in Florida,” Bates said. “I wanted to get good ideas and bad ideas, and then I sorted all through, and then opened this up.” And coming up on Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is one of the food shelf ’s biggest fundraisers - the annual craft fair. “This will actually be our

“Election day is that Tuesday,” she said. “We always do a food and bake sale. This year, because we’ve got both of them in the same week, we decided not to do food. But we are going to have a bake sale.” There will be volunteers to run the bake sale, and a donation jar as well. For those who can’t make it over to the craft fair or the bake sale, checks can be mailed in the name of the organization to PO Box 912, Wells VT 05774. Bates worked as a cafeteria employee at the Wells Village School before, and she said she could tell which kids had eaten that weekend and which ones hadn’t. So, in addition to their usual work done at the food shelf, they run a summer lunch program for kids on free and

WHO SHUT THE HEAT OFF? What happened? I mean one minute we are cruising along with fall clothes, watering the mums on the stoop, and chatting on the walk way. Next thing you know it’s flurrying out, the plants have crystallized, and the only time we go out is to get to the car. Winter comes quick. But as usual, here at the Birdseye we are cooking up a storm with home cooked meals and a big cozy dining car. So next time you are down, come on in to warm up and enjoy the Birdseye Diner experience.

Turn in prescription drugs on Saturday Anyone who has unused prescription medication lying about in their medicine cabinet can get rid of it this Saturday, Oct. 27. Local law enforcement agencies will collect the medication from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “The main thing is to not leave it around in people’s residences because of the type of criminal activity that we’ve had in the past,” Granville and Whitehall police chief Ernie Bassett said. “That’s one of our main concerns, and safety wise, if there’s kids in the residence you don’t want that type of stuff to be left around, either.” In both the Granville and Whitehall police stations, there is a box where drugs are accepted. That goes for Fair Haven, Vermont, as well, according to police chief William Humphries.
“We’ve been involved in this a number of years,” he said. “Ourselves and Castleton P.D. obtained drug drop boxes a few years ago. I think it’s important to get the drugs off the street.” Humphries said there have been some cases in which prescriptions have gone missing from people’s homes. “People will go, knock on the door, ‘hey can I use your bathroom’?” he said. “Unfortunately, people will let them in, they go through their medicine cabinets.” But it always isn’t a stranger, he said. “You have family members over that might have a substance abuse problem, and they know that Grandma or Uncle or so-and-so used medication,” he said. Like their counterparts over the border in New York, Fair Haven’s police
department collects prescription medication all year. The police department doesn’t advertise it daily, and the month of October is their big push to let people know it’s there. “We’ll take drugs from Hampton,” he said. “We don’t care where you’re from. You don’t have to be a Fair Haven resident. You can walk into any of the drug take-back facilities, and we’ll take your drugs if you’re from New York or Mass., just to get them off the streets.” Last year during the drug take back event, the department took back 27 pounds, Humphries said. “The sheriffs usually come once a month now,” he said. “The sheriffs have a program where they come and collect it once a month, and then it gets turned over to the feds.”
The other important piece of information is to keep the drugs out of the sewer system. It was once common for people to flush medication down the toilet - but Humphries says that’s a bad idea. “Obviously if you flush it down the toilet, it ends up in your waterways,” he said. “It is environmentally sound to not flush them.” There are several locations around the area to turn over prescription medication. Aside from police departments, Wilcox Pharmacy at 252 Stratton Road in Rutland and Rutland Pharmacy at 75 Allen Street in Rutland are also taking back unused medication. There will be a location set up in the Diamond Run Mall as well at 46 Diamond Run Mall Place in Rutland.

Slate-Scapes Artist Chuck Helfer to give gallery talks Nov. 2 The “Slate-Scapes: Slate on the Land” exhibit currently running at the Slate Valley Museum will add another dimension to the gallery experience by hosting gallery talks with photographer Chuck Helfer on the First Friday Nov. 2, from 7-9 p.m. This unique opportunity will allow museum visitors access a local artist as he discusses his work and creative process while documenting an integral part of Slate Valley history and culture. Talks will begin at 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m., and 8:30 p.m. Come explore the beauty of slate in the natural world as well as local art and culture at the museum. “Slate is the dominate feature of the Slate Valley. It underlies our hills and valleys in addition to being a leading industry across the area over the last 180 years. This project took me many places throughout the valley to explore the theme of slate on the landscape,” says Helfer. In putting together this body of work, the artist considered how the natural resource of slate has and continues to shape the landscape of our valley. Helfer has lived in Poultney, Vermont for fifteen years following his retirement as a federal employee from national service programs such as the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps. He grew up around gold mining in the California deserts and began carrying a film
camera as a teen. Since living in Vermont, he has been an active photographer producing images for nonprofit and governmental agencies such as The Nature Conservancy,
Vermont State Historical Parks, and the National Park Service. “This night of gallery talks will allow photography, art, and local history enthusiasts the
chance to speak directly to Chuck and learn firsthand more about his approach to documenting the slate industry and slate from a landscape perspective,” says Krista Rupe, execu-
tive director of the Slate Valley Museum This exhibit will be on view through Nov. 17. For more information, please visit slatevalleymuseum.org.
