Museum Exhibit From the early 1800’s through the mid-20th century, hundreds of mills operated along the banks of the Battenkill River. “Mills on the Kill” is an exhibit curated by Salem’s deputy historian, Judy Flagg, and artist and author of “Untold Stories of the Battenkill” Elizabeth Cockey, at the Georgi Museum in Shushan. An opening reception with light refreshments is planned for Saturday, Nov. 3 from 2 to 5 p.m. along with the opportunity to meet the curators. The exhibit will continue to be on display Nov. 4 from 2 to 5 p.m.; Nov. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m.; and Nov. 10 and 11 from 2 to 5 p.m. Mills of all types once dotted the banks of the Battenkill at each hamlet and village along its course to the Hudson River. Grist mills and sawmills gave way to textile and equipment factories. Very few operating industries remain; the rest lie in ruins or were burned down years ago. Many of the farming implements, stenciled tin trays, blankets and pottery that were produced still survive and will be on display. Information: 518-854-3773.
