Veterans Day 2018
Veteran’s Day parades, ceremonies planned Veterans Day will be here on Sunday, Nov. 11, and several local organizations are giving people the opportunity to honor our nation’s servicemen and women. Those interested in sharing a meal with a veteran, attending a ceremony honoring veterans, or simply stopping by an area monument will have ample opportunities to say “thank you for your service” to friends, family, and neighbors who chose to put their lives on the line. Here’s a look at Veterans Day events in our area:

Then and now: Pictured above left is Ed Hayes in 2018 following his interview at the FreePress offices. Above right is Hayes following his enlistment in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
He crawled through tunnels in Vietnam By Matthew Saari Tunnel rats. That was the unofficial moniker given to volunteer soldiers and Marines during the Vietnam War who were tasked with crawling through the often cramped and uncharted tunnels the Viet Cong dug throughout their country to fight first the French and then American armed forces. Ed Hayes, 69, was a tunnel rat, serving in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971.
“You know what you’re getting into more or less,” said Hayes, a Granville High School graduate who lives in West Pawlet, Vermont. “They explain it to you a little bit.” Hayes graduated from high school in 1967 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. After completing basic training Hayes was assigned the military occupational specialty of 11B – infantryman. When shipped to Vietnam, Hayes was assigned to a mecha-
nized infantry company with five armored personnel carriers (APCs). Although the APCs were able to carry troops, Hayes always found himself marching behind them on patrol. “They used them for the wounded, more or less,” he said.
‘Not afraid’ After a month, Hayes’ company needed volunteers to explore the tunnel complexes the soldiers

Veteran Continued from front page would come across. For whatever reason, Hayes raised his hand and volunteered for the duty. “When you’re younger you’re not afraid of anything,” Hayes said. “When you’re young you don’t have the fear.” In an interview Monday, Hayes explained the standard procedure the Army used when discovering a tunnel system. First, the company would establish a perimeter around the suspected complex, with soldiers on the lookout for enemy activity. Hayes didn’t provide details of what would happen if they observed people coming and going from the tunnels, saying only: “it wasn’t good for them.”
Lightly armed The next day Hayes and a couple other volunteers would be tasked with heading into the tunnels. The tunnel rats would leave most of their gear behind so they could fit into the tunnels, often armed only with a flashlight and pistol. “You went down light but you had weapons to protect yourself,” Hayes said. Many readers may have difficulty comprehending the extent of the Viet Cong’s tunnels. These were not straight culverts but rather extensive tunnels, often curving through the ground, to connect rooms that Hayes estimated as being eight feet by 10 feet in dimension, with a height of six feet. “This was planned well in advance,” he said. “You don’t build these tunnels overnight.” Hayes and his fellow “rats” went down searching for weapons caches, operational intelligence and enemy activity. Fortunately for Hayes, he never encountered enemy soldiers in the tunnels, but combatants weren’t the sole danger.
A drawing of a typical Viet Cong tunnel complex used during the Vietnam War.
Booby traps Often the tunnels were rigged with booby traps ranging from the simple but effective “punji stick,” a feces-covered, sharpened bamboo stake to trip wires attached to explosives. “They had everything you could imagine,” Hayes said. It was one such trap that caused Hayes no small amount of consternation for years to come. Because of illness, Hayes was unable to go into a complex for one mission. Another soldier was assigned to take his place. When the replacement went down into the tunnel he
triggered a trap. The resulting explosion took the replacement’s legs. “I really felt bad for a long time,” Hayes said. “You learn to be careful, I’ll tell you that.”
Nighttime firefights Although Hayes never encountered the enemy in the handful of tunnel complexes he explored, there were plenty of firefights above ground. “We ran into them at night,” he said. “They were pretty sharp…they were pretty tough to find during the daytime.” Hayes recalls accompanying a company sniper out into the field one night. Unlike typical soldiers, the sniper was

equipped with a thermal optics scope, allowing him to see at night. On this mission, the sniper allowed Hayes to look through the scope at an enemy officer, before the sniper took the shot. “He bagged a kill for me,” Hayes said. After months of slogging through the war zone of Vietnam, Hayes was taken off the line as a “sole surviving son,” finishing his time at Cam Ranh Bay. “The last month I was down on the beach; I just hung out for a month,” Hayes said.
No regrets
from Vietnam, Hayes assimilated smoothly into civilian life, working with his father in an excavation business. And because he returned to a largely conservative town, he was not subject to the anti-war sentiment that greeted many returning soldiers. Hayes said he has no regrets in serving in America’s most controversial war, and he expressed gratitude that today’s veterans are treated better than many of those of his generation. “I would never want my kids to go through it,” Hayes said, “but I don’t regret it.”
Unlike many who came back

Contemplation and Thanks - Castleton Free Library It’s that contemplative time of year, when we can’t help but think of temporal change, as leaves etch intangible pathways in the gloom, and vistas open, revealing secrets we haven’t seen since last year. We’re thankful for V’s of geese, for foraging turkeys and fog-laden forests, for woodsmoke and apple crisp. We’re thankful for the hush of November. Who better to engage our minds, here and now, than a poet? We are extremely pleased to welcome poet Tom Smith to Castleton Free Library on Monday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. for a
reading from his new book, Poet Steals Headlines: Sentenced to Life, a collection not only contemplative but also humorous, satirical, whimsical, and sensual. Smith’s poem titles are actual headlines from a variety of tabloids and “more respectable rags;” his poetry spins them through realms of Greek mythology, pop-culture, and reflection. We meet Steven Spielberg, Aphrodite, a local chicken that dared to cross the road. Smith delivers his words with a bemused smile, as one who derives wry amusement
from life’s peculiarities and baubles. His acknowledgements open with an R.L.Stevenson quote: “The world is so full of a number of things…” Smith taught literature and writing at Castleton University until retiring in 1995. He has been publishing poems since 1959 in many literary magazines and book-length collections. Our library collection includes eight of his books. More to think about: 100 years ago, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marked the end of hostilities in “the war to end all wars.” We all know how that idea

turned out. But this annual marking of Armistice Day, celebrated as Veterans Day in the U.S., gives us pause to contemplate the service and sacrifices made by our military veterans in times of war and peace. On this ceasefire centennial, visit the library to learn a little more about the “Great War” and the other conflicts endured by those serving in the US Armed Forces. So many can no longer tell their stories, but books and films keep them alive, revealing the human hopes, fears and bravery behind the gunshots; providing deeper understanding of why we are so thankful. Be thankful for food, family, free access to libraries and ideas, the fullness of the world…. Happy Thanksgiving from Castleton Free Library! following businesses during normal working hours: Poultney Library, Original VT Store and Marcie’s Hair Studio. Guild to P. Beatty, 751 Hampshire Hollow Rd., Poultney, Vermont 05764. ‘Bread and Roses, Too’ at the Dorset Playhouse “Bread and Roses, Too” is a novel of historical fiction that tells the story of the 1912 “Bread and Roses” strike in the Lawrence, Massachusetts textile mills through the eyes of an Italian-American girl and a runaway boy.
A staged reading of the book will be presented tonight at 7:30 p.m. on the Dorset Playhouse Stage. Director, Maureen Chaffee, has adapted a reading from the book. The novel relates the journey of Rosa, who, along with
Jake and other children, are sent temporarily out of harm’s way to foster families in Barre, Vermont, as children actually were during the strike. The Dorset Playhouse is located at 104 Cheney Road in Dorset.

Why do we celebrate Veterans Day? Why do we “STAND” when our National Anthem is played? Why do we honor all Veterans and thank them for their service? Why? Because they leave their homes, jobs and families to keep the rest of us safe. They live in places where there is extreme heat or cold, go days without sleep, and months without a home cooked meal, or seeing the smile of a loved one. They see and do things unheard of so we can live in peace in the comforts of our warm homes. Why do we celebrate Veterans Day? Because “thank you” is not enough! We should honor, respect and do everything in our power to let these brave men and women know how grateful we are for their service. They are the real heroes in this unsettled world of discontent. Why do we celebrate Veterans Day? Because we can—and we can because of THEM! God bless Veterans everywhere!

Each year volunteers transform the Slate Valley Museum into a winter wonderland for its Festival of Trees.
Museum prepares for Festival Volunteers spent several days this week fluffing trees, stringing lights and hanging garland and wreaths at the Slate Valley Musuem in preparation for its 7th Annual Festival of Trees. The festival is set for Dec. 7 this year. Artisans, crafters, decorators and anyone who just enjoys holiday decorating are welcome to use their skills to play a major role in preparing the museum this Thursday and Friday, Nov. 8-9. Prior to the festival, the museum takes on a whole new look with the interior transformed to become a backdrop to the featured trees. This transformation is a unique opportunity for those interested in investing some time in a most rewarding project. The museum has a substan-
tial inventory of design materials (swags, ornamental greens, wreaths, and trees) to be used in creating a holiday feeling throughout the building. There is a majestic tree that is challenging because of its size. Decorating it is an enriching experience as there are exquisite ornaments in the museum’s collection. In addition to the actual decoration of the museum building, the Slate Valley Museum invites the public to participate in the Festival of Trees. There are two ways to participate: Decorate a tree to be displayed during the festival, with a donation of $25 to the museum. At the conclusion of the event, the tree is yours to take home and use elsewhere for the holiday. The second way is to design a tree to be donated to the
museum which will become part of the Silent Auction fundraiser. Should you be interested, but you’re not sure of how to decorate a tree or what to do about finding a theme, there are people with the museum who can provide design ideas. The Festival of Trees is linked to the Village of Granville’s lighting of the trees in Veterans Memorial Park on the same First Friday of December. The village theme for this year is “Rudolph’s Rockin’ Christmas” and this theme can be carried over into tree designs as well. Registration forms and guidelines are available at the Slate Valley Museum at 17 Water Street in Granville, on their website www.slatevalleymuseum.org or from Molly Celani at 518-361-9475.
