The park in Fair Haven will be buzzing with activity this evening, starting at 4 p.m.
Tree lighting, music, Santa visit today! Before folks can even dig into the Thanksgiving leftovers, Fair Haven shifts gears and focuses on the Christmas holidays. The Fair Haven Concerts in the Park Committee will host its annual holiday tree-lighting in the park on Friday, Nov. 23, the day after Thanksgiving. The event, in its fifth year, will begin at 4 p.m. It will include cookies, hot chocolate and songs of the season. It has become a tradition that Santa
arrives by fire engine, escorted by local volunteer firefighters. Following the visit from Santa, the tree lighting will take place. A giant tree along with several smaller trees will illuminate before the crowd’s eyes. Like the town’s summer concert series, the committee has made the holiday tree-lighting into a family-friendly event. Get into the holiday spirit
with fellow community members and enjoy the beauty of the town. Fair Haven’s tree lighting event has been deemed a magical way to start the season off on a high note. Fair Haven Concert in the Park is located at Fair Haven Park, on 3 North Park Place in Fair Haven. For more information on this event, contact Ceil Hunt at 802-265-7913.

A farm business has found a new home in West Haven. Tanya Tolchin and Scott Hertzberg have started Otter Point Farm on 48 acres of exceptional farmland. The couple found the land by working with the Vermont Land Trust’s Farmland Access Program, which connects entrepreneurial farmers with land they can afford. The property was permanently conserved with the land trust at the time of the sale. For several years, the farm’s previous owners, Rick and Ali Wilson, grew vegeta-
bles on the land located on Hackadam Road. When they decided it was time to sell, they reached out to the Vermont Land Trust because they wanted to make sure the farm would remain in production and that it would be protected from development. The Vermont Land Trust maintains a list of hundreds of people looking for farmland. It contacted those on the list and advertised the opportunity as well.

He will then lead the children down Main Street to the Poultney town office where library staff will serve free cocoa and cookies and kids will get the chance to meet with Santa. Farm Continued from front page Tolchin and Hertzberg, who had been farming in Maryland, were chosen to buy the farm through a competitive business proposal process. The land trust gave them a temporary loan to buy the land, while funding for conserving the land was secured through the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. The sale of a conservation easement— which ensures the land will not be developed and will remain available to farmers—ultimately reduced the purchase price of the farm. “We’re both first-generation farmers,” said Tolchin. “We were looking for years for a farm. I’m originally from Connecticut and wanted to be back in New England. When we learned about the Vermont Land Trust, we started looking in Vermont. The land trust really had the farm affordability piece thought through. You can’t just protect a property, you need to make sure that farmers will be able to farm it.” “Scott and Tanya were chosen to buy the farm because they had a lot of farming experience that seemed to be a good fit for the land, along with a lot of marketing knowledge,” said Donald Campbell of the Vermont Land Trust. For 15 years Hertzberg and Tolchin operated Jug Bay
Market Garden in Maryland. They grew organic vegetables and flowers and ran a 100-share CSA. More than half of their land was leased, and the couple farmed by driving between three separate locations belonging to others. The logistics and inefficiency of moving equipment around multiple locations began to take a toll. Building soil health, installing irrigation systems, and constructing farm buildings were hard, because they didn’t know if they would soon lose control of the land they used. “We hear from many farmers who want, and need, the permanence that comes from owning the land that is your business,” said Campbell. “Ownership allows them to make long-term investments that improve both the farm and the business.” Tolchin and Herzberg’s new operation in Vermont has made rapid progress. They moved to the farm in January and were selling their first crops at farmers’ markets by July 4. “The land is so productive, even in this dry summer we had much more production per acre than we had anticipated,” said Herzberg. The previous owners had done much to improve the land, including adding wells and hoophouses, planting regenerative cover crops, clearing field edges, and maintaining the buildings. Tolchin and Herzberg are planning to add three new unheated hoophouses, which will be enough space to grow
more tomatoes and to rotate crops. There will also be more space for winter greens like spinach. “We want to farm organically and pay attention to soil health. We hope to produce enough to sell food affordably and move into farm-to-school sales. We really care about healthy nutritious food for all,” said Tolchin. “By making farms affordable and keeping them that way through permanent conservation, we were able to help both families make sure that some of the nicest land in Rutland County will remain productive forever,” added Campbell. “Helping new farmers access land and successfully establish new operations are key goals of VHCB’s Farmland Conservation and Farm & Forest Viability programs,” said Gus Seelig, Vermont Housing & Conservation Board Executive Director. “Our conservation funding made the farm’s purchase price affordable for Tanya and Scott, and business planning assistance from the Intervale Center, through VHCB’s Viability program, will provide technical support as they grow their operation.” The financial assistance from the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service have helped make it possible for Vermont to permanently protect its highest quality agricultural resources.

Mettawee School salutes Vets ans who just keep returning each year, even after their children have left the school. “I am so proud of my time in the service,” said one former Marine. “It warms my heart to see these young people recognize that sacrifice. When my young neighbor asked me to come this morning, I jumped at the invitation.” The program was a celebration of the American spirit. Following the Pledge of Allegiance everyone sang “The Star Spangled Banner.” The Presidential Veterans Day Proclamation was read aloud and each of the Armed Forces’ songs were performed by the assembled gathering: U.S. Marines, “The Marine’s Hymn;” U.S. Navy, “Anchors Away;” U.S. Air Force, “The U.S. Air Force;” U.S. Coast Guard, “Semper Paratus;” U.S. Army: “The Caisson Song.” While the students watched in rapt attention, Mettawee Principal Brooke DeBonis, introduced each of the honored guests. She walked purposely through the tables with a hand microphone to stop at each Veteran, who in turn stood, stated their name, service branch and years served.
“We honor you.” That was the title of the heartfelt video shown near the end of this year’s annual celebration of Veterans Day at the Mettawee Community School. The breakfast gathering of nearly 250 people, included all kindergarten through 6th grade students, staff, volunteers and more than 40 invited veterans. The service men and women in attendance represented all five branches of the United States armed forces: Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. “This is such a special event,” said one of the parents serving coffee and clearing tables. “It shows the real value of community and how this school brings all of us together.” Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union Superintendent, Jackie Wilson added. “I’m so glad I was able to attend this celebration. It was wonderful to see all these young children so respectfully acknowledge the service and deeds of older generations.” The veterans arrived by 8:30 a.m., when they were individually escorted to their assigned seats scattered throughout the auditorium. Soon, the students filed in by grade and the room was filled with hugs and smiles. While most of the honored guests were parents or grandparents, there were some veter-

One Navy serviceman enlisted in 1956, more than 60 years ago. “It is so valuable for our students to understand the importance of recognizing our community members who served in the military.” DeBonis observed. I love how we give each veteran the opportunity to stand to be acknowledged by the whole school. I know that the veterans feel appreciated and this event is so meaningful to them.” One of many high-points during the celebration was the showing of the video produced by the Mettawee 6th grade class. Photos from past Veterans Day gatherings were mixed in with videos of current students publicly expressing their gratitude: All too soon the program came to an end. But before leaving the auditorium, students at each table went up to their guests, shook their hand and said, “Thank you for your service.”

Special Events at Castleton Free Library Calling all preschoolers! We are very excited about our upcoming visit with Vermont writer Phoebe Stone, who will be coming to Castleton Free Library to give a free program especially for preschool children on Friday Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. Please note that this event will take the place of our regularly scheduled Story Hour, but begins a half hour earlier than usual. The morning will include about 30 minutes of storytelling/booktalking, followed by an opportunity for each child, including babies, to choose a free book to keep. This event is funded by the Children’s Literacy Foundation, part of a “Year of the Book” grant awarded to Castleton Elementary School in partnership with the town library. We also received $1,000 worth of new books for the library collection. Stone is the author and illustrator of three acclaimed picture books, When the Wind
Bears Go Dancing; Go Away, Shelley Boo!; and What Night Do the Angels Wander?, as well as middle-grade novels, many of which received starred reviews. An artist from Middlebury, she has twice-received the Vermont Council on the Arts Fellowship for painting, and her work has appeared in many galleries and museums. From Kirkus Reviews, describing What Night..: “Vibrant spreads offer a feast of folk-art illustrations steeped in gorgeous shades of red, green, and blue. Enchanting images -- stitching the world a quilt of snow, trimming the tree with clouds, mist, and moon -- emphasize the celestial qualities of this magical holiday picture book.” Her work is dreamy and lyrical. Phoebe grew up both painting and writing in a family of novelists and poets, transmitting the storytelling tradition to her own son through bedtime stories. Speaking of Wind Bears, “When my son was
