Swap Continued from front page “A few of us have been to them before in the past,” she said. “We just said, why don’t we do our own?” The rules for the cookie swap are simple: Bake a dozen of your favorite cookies to bring and take a dozen home with you. The more cookies you bring, the more you get to take home. And, the event has proven popular. “We usually have about 20 people, if not more,” Monty said, adding that a lot of cookies get traded at the event. But it’s not just about the cookies. Three years ago, the hosts started a 50/50 raffle to benefit the Rutland County Humane Society, which has proven good for the organiza-
tion over the years. “I think the first year it was like $100, last year it was $88,” she said. In addition to the raffle, door prizes are up for grabs and light refreshments will be provided by the Wooden Soldier. The cookie swap has become a tradition for the restaurant, and Monty said that it’s both enjoyable for the staff of the Wooden Soldier and for those who attend. “People enjoy coming, and it’s something to do on a Sunday evening,” she said. “We like doing it.” The Wooden Soldier is located at 31 Main St. in Fair Haven. There is no charge at the door to enter - just bring some cookies. For more information, contact the restaurant at 802-2657985.

Ban Continued from page 2 with people. If it snows, we’ll probably give you a ticket.” The option to have the vehicle towed lies with the Fair Haven Department of Public Works, and the vehicle is towed at the owner’s expense. Humphries said there usually isn’t an issue. “Sometimes you’ll have a few,” he said. “DPW has towed a couple because they were in the way in the middle of the
night for snow removal, but it’s not common.” The Fair Haven public notice specifies that other objects, such as basketball hoops, should be removed from the sides of the road. The notice also notes that it is illegal to plow snow onto a public highway, and that violators can be subjected to fines, covering the cost of the damages, or even imprisonment. For Humphries, however, it’s important to remove the vehicles for the DPW to be able to do their plowing quickly and efficiently.
“They’re not trying to work around cars to clear your roads out,” he said. “In the past years, they’ve had to tow a few cars in the middle of the night.” In each community, violators are subject to being towed or may face fines. For more information on the parking ban, residents in Fair Haven and Poultney should contact their respective town manager. For Fair Haven, call 802-265-3010. For Poultney, call 802-287-9751.

TIME TO SMARTEN UP Not so sure if Santa is going to be dropping any gear off for Johnny this year? Maybe you ought to let him know. He needs to be careful that he doesn’t blow all 11 months in the next three weeks. I hear Santa is cutting costs this year by raising standards. Don’t have him make an example of little Johnny. If you need to, bring him down to the Birdseye for dinner and a refresher, and let the Birdseye Diner put the merry back in Christmas.
