YOUR GUIDE TO AUTO SERVICE & PARTS VALUES IN THE WASHINGTON COUNTY REGION / DECEMBER 2018
Protect your vehicle from snow, ice and the cold
Winter can be an unforgiving season. Freezing temperatures coupled with snow and ice can take its toll on people who live in climates where cold weather is a fact of winter life. While winter can test people's patience, it also can be harsh on cars and trucks. Understanding what components of a vehicle can be compromised by dropping temperatures and snowy roads can help drivers take action to safeguard their automotive investments. While the Canadian Automobile Association notes that winter can wreak havoc on just about every part of a vehicle, there are some parts that seem to bear the brunt of Old Man Winter's abuse. Properly servicing and caring for a car or truck can help. Drivers should take their vehicles for a tuneup and inspection before wintry weather arrives. A mechanic will examine the car battery and check antifreeze
levels and make sure that the thermostat, defroster, brakes, and even wiper blades are working effectively. Have the tires inspected for adequate tread, which can make navigating roads safer. If the treads are worn, replace the tires. In addition to visiting their mechanics, drivers can perform some inspections and fixes themselves. n Check that all of the vehicle's lights are operational so your car can be

n A new coating of wax can serve as a shield against
road salt, snow, sleet, and rain. Try a polymer wax to protect the paint. Whenever possible, rinse off salt and grime so it does not dry on the car and gradually wear away at the paint. Some drivers mistakenly believe that salt stops being a problem once it dries simply because moisture is the active ingredient for a corrosive reaction. But humidity in the air is enough to keep the salt eating away at the car's paint, and that can con-
tribute to rust. Be sure to rinse off the undercarriage of the vehicle as well. n Have your tires' alignment checked toward the end of winter or early spring. A season of traveling over pothole-ridden roads or hitting curbs buried under snow drifts can affect the alignment. Get everything back on track. Similarly, inspect tires routinely, as weather changes can affect tire pressure and strength. n Use a soft snow brush or a foam brush to clear snow off of the car. Avoid hard plastic scrapers you might use on your windshield, as they can scratch painted surfaces. n Try to park the vehicle in a garage or under a car port, each of which can protect cars and trucks from the often harsh elements of winter. Vehicles can be affected by the cold weather. Keep them running efficiently to prevent damage this winter.

Tips on digging your car out after a storm The arrival of cooler, shorter days is often a precursor to winter storms dominated by snowfall. A snow-covered landscape can make for an appealing image. But heavy snowfall also makes for extra work, especially for drivers who must dig their vehicles out of the snow after each storm. Some people live in suburban areas where they can park their cars in driveways or garages, while others live in cities and have to park on the street, where snow plows can do a wonderful job of burying vehicles underneath mounds of snow. Rescuing a car or truck from a pile
of snow can be tricky and time-consuming, but there is a process that can make the job easier. n Begin by clearing out the tail pipe of the car. This is a vital first step because failure to do so can back harmful carbon monoxide gas and other fumes into the car. Take the time to clear out the rear of the car, including the taillights, so you will have improved visibility. n When the exhaust pipe is clear, turn on the car. Some people prefer to put the defroster on right away. Others wait until the vehicle warms up before doing so. Having a warm car will melt

some of the accumulated ice and snow and make it easier for you to clear the car. n Work from the top of the vehicle down. Otherwise, you will end up negating all of your work by throwing fresh snow on the areas you already cleared. n By now the defrosters should
have kicked in sufficiently enough to make it simple to clear snow from the windshield and rear window. Use some deicing windshield fluid to dislodge wiper blades if they have frozen to the windshield. Some drivers leave their wiper blades standing on end and away from the windshield prior to a big storm to pre-

puncture the tire with a metal shovel. Try to create a tire path in the direction you plan to move the vehicle. So if you will be backing out of the driveway, clear the way behind the car. If traction is a problem, use a bit of rock salt or cat litter behind the tires to give them more grip. Slipping a car mat under the tires also can provide much-needed traction. Shoveling out after a snowstorm is a task few people enjoy. However, it is a necessity of the season and one that can be done safely and efficiently.

Prevent breakdowns with battery care Many drivers have experienced the misfortune of getting into their vehicles only to realize their engines won't turn over. Although there may be plenty of reasons why a car will not start, quite frequently a dead battery is to blame. Car batteries can last for five years or more when properly cared for, but many batteries wear down and become inefficient within three years of daily use. According to the UK-based company Warranty Wise, car batteries deteriorate with every charge from a vehicle's engine. Naturally, drivers who are
stranded by dead batteries wish they had done more to prevent their battery dying while they're on the road. Certain factors might offer clues as to how much life vehicle batteries have left. n Longer start time: A dying battery may cause the engine to crank, but it can be slow to start or not seem to exude a lot of power. n Cranks but doesn't start: You may turn the key to hear the engine trying to turn over, but it won't. Even if the vehicle eventually starts, have the bat-
tery checked and, if necessary, replaced by a mechanic. n A jump start has been necessary: Batteries that have required a jump or multiple jumps are on their last legs and should be replaced immediately. n Dim lights or check engine indicator: Batteries powers the electric components in a vehicle, so dim lights could be indicative of a loss of power. Having the "check engine" light come on also can be a clue.
n Extreme temperatures: According to Firestone, hot or cold temperatures can shorten a battery's life. If you live in an extreme climate, your battery may not last as long as the manufacturer suggests it should. n Short driving trips: People who take many short trips (less than 20 minutes each) may find their batteries do not have enough time to fully recharge, shortening their life expectancy. n Pungent aroma: Leaking and cor-

How to stay safe on winter roads Snowy weather can be a time for fun, especially for avid skiers or children who relish spending days off from school tossing snowballs and building snow forts. Many adults, however, do not look forward to the snow as much as youngsters do. Snow can be hazardous when driving, but putting snow tires on a vehicle can improve vehicle safety. According to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, roughly 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States. Each winter, snowfall compounds treacherous road conditions, increasing the risk of accidents. It is important to know how to drive when weather conditions are dangerous. It is also wise to outfit a vehicle to reduce its risk of slipping and sliding on icy, snowy roads. Here are some tips to follow.
n Limit time spent driving in the snow. Avoid driving during snowstorms or directly after whenever possible. Snow not only makes roads slick, but falling flakes can impair a driver’s visibility and reduce his or her response time. Try to wait until snowclearing teams have salted, plowed and sanded roads before venturing out. n Be sure you can see clearly. Clear off the snow from the windshield, side mirrors and windows so it does not compromise your view. Also, top off the windshield fluid so you will be able to clear snow and salt kick-up from your windshield. Look for a washer fluid that has an antifreeze component, other-
Slamming on the brakes will only exacerbate the skid. Rather, take your foot off the accelerator, allowing the car to naturally slow down as you turn your wheels into the direction the car is skidding. This should help right the car and get you back on track.

between your car and the one in front of you helps you avoid a collision.
n Drive slowly. Reduce your speed when driving in inclement weather. It can be more difficult to stop or maneuver around a potential obstacle when conditions are less than ideal. Traveling at a high speed will increase the risk of accidents.
n Be aware of black ice. Black ice gets its name from its veritable invisibility. It is so thin and hard to spot, it just looks like the black asphalt of the road. Black ice tends to form in areas that have had snow or ice melt, which then refreezes at night when temperatures drop. Be extra cautious on turns and on highway exit and entrance ramps, where black ice frequently forms.
n Leave enough room between you and other motorists. Tailgating is responsible for many accidents, even when there is no snow on the ground. In inclement weather, it can take longer to slow or stop the car after pressing on the brakes. Having an additional space
n Steer your car into the skid. Remain calm and do not panic and jam on the brakes if your car starts to skid.
How to recognize brake problems
Battery Continued from page X cause battery issues. If there is a rotten egg smell under the hood, it may be a leaking battery on its way to dying. Drivers can have their vehicle batteries tested by mechanics. Batteries can be replaced at home or at a garage. Servicing the vehicle frequently can prevent performance inefficiencies and help determine if any components are straining the battery and causing premature loss of battery life. multiple jumps are on their last legs and should be replaced immediately.
Maintaining a vehicle is more than just a way to protect one’s financial investment. Vehicle maintenence can protect against accidents and make the road safer for drivers and their passengers as well as their fellow motorists. Fully functioning brakes are an important component of automotive safety. In its 2015 Crash Stats report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that brake-related problems accounted for 22 percent of crashes where vehicular failure was cited as the cause of the collision. Bad brakes are particularly notorious for rear-end collisions. Faulty, worn brake lines, antilock brake system malfunctions and worn brake pads and discs are some potential brake problems. It is important that motorists learn to recognize the first symptoms of brake trouble so

they can address issues before they put drivers, their passengers and other motorists at risk of accident or injury. n Unusual noises: Screeching, grinding, rubbing, and high-pitched sounds are common indicators that brake pads, rotors and other parts of the braking system need attention. Worn pads can cause damage to other vehicle parts, resulting in more expensive repairs if they’re not addressed promptly. n Pulling: If the car pulls to one side when applying the brakes, this may indicate brake pad linings are wearing down unevenly. A brake adjustment may be necessary. Pulling also may be indicative of an object or debris caught in the brake fluid. n Less responsive: If when pressing on the brake pedal the brakes just do not seem to be as effective as they once were, or it is
n Invest in snow tires. Those who live in especially snowy climates and do a lot of driving would be wise to purchase snow tires. Snow tires, also called winter tires, have special tread patterns that offer better traction in snow and ice. They also are made from softer rubber compounds than regular tires that retain their flexibility in cold weather, allowing the tire to conform to the surface of the road. Although many vehicles come with technology to prevent accidents, they cannot do their jobs if tires are not maintaining their grip on the road. All-season tires are not a replacement for snow tires. All-season tires are designed to work in all sorts of conditions, from rainy weather to dry roads. Therefore, it is better to invest in a set of snow tires that will offer you better protection. When putting snow tires on a car or truck, be sure to do so on all the wheels -- not just the driving wheels. Otherwise you may still risk spin outs or uneven gripping of the road. It is not a good idea to keep snow tires on all year. Because they are softer, snow tires tend to be more noisy and can wear out faster in warmer weather. Therefore, switch out the tires at the beginning of the snowy season and then before the spring arrives anew.
necessary to press the pedal harder for the brakes to engage, there may be a brake fluid leak or an air leak. Check under the vehicle to see if any fluids are pooling. n Pungent odors: Firestone Tire Company says a burning smell may be indicative of worn out brake pads and friction on the tires. Each of these issues require immediate attention. n Vibrations: Certain vibrations may indicate brake issues. Rotors can become warped from metal-on-metal rubbing, potentially leading to a failure of the vehicle to brake properly. Vibrations also may indicate tires are misaligned. These problems can be properly assessed by a trained mechanic. Do not let potential brake problems go unchecked. Keeping brakes in good working order helps drivers stop more readily and avoid collisions.

Must-have items for automotive emergencies sengers warm if a car breaks down in chilly weather. Blankets also can be placed on the ground so that you can lay on the road and be cushioned from debris when looking under the car.
Few drivers want to think about their vehicles breaking down. But cars are not foolproof, and even the most well-maintained vehicle can be sidelined by a flat tire or a dead battery. In certain times of the year, a breakdown may be an inconvenience that takes up a few hours of a person's time. In extreme weather situations, a broken down car could be dangerous. Preparing for emergency situations can help drivers get moving faster. There are certain items that should be kept in the trunk or cargo area regardless of the season, and some of these items should be modified as the seasons change.
n Extra clothing: An extra set of clothing can be handy should your clothing become soggy or soiled. n Nonperishable foods: A few snacks and bottles of water stashed in the car can help quell hunger while waiting for a tow truck.
n Sand and kitty litter: Sand can weigh down
n First aid kit: If someone is hurt in an accident, medical supplies in the trunk allow drivers and/or passengers to treat injured persons until paramedics can arrive. Go over what is in the kit and learn how to use each item correctly.
n Flares: If your car breaks down at night or in situations where visibility is poor, flares can keep other drivers away from your vehicle when it is parked on the side of the road. Flares also will illuminate the area so that you can

Rudolph's Rockin' Christmas Tree-lighting, parade, festival today Granville will be overtaken with holiday cheer Friday as the annual treelighting ceremony, holiday parade, Festival of Trees and Festival of Wreaths and Centerpieces take place.
Holiday parade Kicking off the evening will be a holiday parade, which will start at +Great Meadow Federal Credit Union on East Main Street at 5:45 p.m. Santa Claus, local law enforcement officials and firemen will process down Main Street to Veterans Memorial Park on Quaker Street. The group will be accompanied by Santa’s Helpers, a group of nine second- and third-graders from Mary J. Tanner School. The students were chosen to ride along with the parade after exhibiting good behavior.
Tree lighting Once at the park, at about 6 p.m., one of Santa’s Helpers will have the important responsibility of waving a magic wand to illuminate the park lights and start the music. “There are 40,000-plus lights in the park … and more than 150,000 lights decorating the village,” said Rick Roberts, Granville village clerk and member of the holiday decorating committee. The theme of this year’s tree lighting is “Rudolph’s Rockin’ Christmas.” The annual holiday celebration and treelighting will focus on the kids this year, with Kelly Clarkson’s “Run, Run Rudolph” at the center of it all. Holiday decorations, lights and more in the park will dance along with the music after Wyatt Loomis, one of Santa’s Helpers, waves the magic wand and gives the que. Also available in the park, until 9 p.m., will be goodies and treats from area businesses, fire pits to roast s’mores, live reindeer, horse-drawn carriage rides and more.
Santa visits Children will have the opportunity to
sit on Santa’ lap and receive an early holiday present. At 4:30 p.m., a ticket booth will open for area youngsters to sign up for a time to visit Santa. Santa’s Helpers get to meet the jolly red giant first, but regular visits start at about 6:30 p.m. Nearly 500 children meet Santa in the park each year.
Festival of Trees The evening also features a pair of festivals, which run from 5 to 9 p.m.: The Festival of Trees at the Slate Valley Museum and the Festival of Wreaths and Centerpieces at the Pember Library and Museum. At the Slate Valley Museum, the seventh annual Festival of Trees will feature a display of decorated trees, carolers, snacks and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. There will even be a tree with hats and mittens available for free to anyone who needs them. Several of the 40 or so trees, which have been decorated and donated to the museum by local organizations, businesses and crafty individuals, will be sold in a silent auction, which runs from Dec. 7-15. At exactly 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 15, the bids will be collected and the winners announced. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Slate Valley Museum.
Festival of Wreaths and Centerpieces Across the Mettowee River footbridge, the Pember Library and Museum’s fifth annual Festival of Wreaths and Centerpieces will run simultaneously. At the Pember, wreaths and centerpieces will be available for purchase in a silent auction, carolers will sing and snacks will be available. Bidding on wreaths will start Dec. 7 and close on Dec. 12. Winning bidders will be announced on Dec. 12. Proceeds from the wreath and centerpiece auction benefit the Pember Library and Museum.
Tractor parade next Friday Nearly 40 tractors, all-terrain vehicles and other vehicles illuminated with lights and other decorations will make their way through Granville streets next Friday as part of the village’s annual lighted tractor parade. Last year 53 vehicles took part and about 2,000 people lined village streets to watch. “We are expecting exciting entries of dancers and horses on top of an already impressive lineup of gators, tractors and trucks,” said organizer Heather Pauquette. This year’s parade is set for Friday, Dec. 14. The parade kicks off at 6:30 p.m. from Telescope Casual Furniture. The route will take Church Street and Main Street to Veterans Memorial Park. Each vehicle will pass by a judges’ stand on Main Street, where mystery judges will decide which entry will receive a prize for the most festive entry. The winner, which will be announced at the park following the
parade, will receive an engraved glass trophy. “It’s a light-up trophy,” Pauquette said of the award that was donated by the Granville High School Class of 1998. There’s still time for participants to register by the Tuesday, Dec. 11 deadline. “They are running out of time,” said Pauquette. To enter, obtain a form from Pauquette. Contact her at hpauquette@telescopecasual.com. Forms can also be picked up at Telescope, Glens Falls National Bank, the Granville village office and Great Meadow Federal Credit Union. There is no fee to participate in or watch the parade. There are also no restrictions for lighting or decorations. Following the parade, floats will be parked along Quaker Street for viewing. One surprise includes Santa & Mrs. Claus participating in and closing the parade again this year.
