Imagine historic East Poultney Green without its beautiful meetinghouse! One of Vermont’s most photographed and treasured historic churches, the East Poultney meetinghouse (United Baptist Church of Poultney), needs your support now. Due to age and weather, damage to the exterior ‘building envelope’ is at a critical point. Restoration is still possible and within means if we all pitch in. More than $120,000 has already been raised for restoration and building updates, thanks to the efforts of church and community leaders and historic preservation enthusiasts. The project has also earned national recognition from the National Fund for Sacred Places, enabling the church to receive at least $100,000 in additional funds from a matching grant program managed by Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation – the more we raise, the more we’re eligible to receive! “This Historic Building is everyone’s heritage... Though the congregation is small – the spirit of the Poultney community is strong. Strong enough to work together and give the more than 200-year-old church a $400,000 makeover.” The Rutland Herald Please join us in restoring this community and state treasure by making a donation or 3-year pledge by January 31, 2019. Visit www.ubcofpoultney.com (click on giveserve) to learn more and to make a secure donation via PayPal. You may also send a check made out to: United Baptist Church of Poultney Capital Campaign, 1500 E. Main Street, Poultney, VT 05764. Nativity Continued from front page Participants can expect to meet in front of the Methodist church near the village green. On the other side of the park will be a flock of live sheep with young shepherds to watch them and at the bandstand, angels will be singing. Deedee Bruce said that, like in years past, whoever attends the event can expect to do some walking.

Lighting Continued from front page limit to the number of honorees. Pick up a form at the Castleton and Fair Haven libraries, Castleton Village Store, Third Place Pizza, Castleton Family Health, the Birdseye Diner and elsewhere. Each ornament or bulb can be purchased in memory of someone who has passed by donating $1 or more. Checks may be made payable to the Castleton Women’s Club and sent to Rosie Doran at 550 Doran Road, Fair Haven, Vermont 05743. The library is located at 638 Main St. in Castleton. Call Jan Jones at 802-468-5574 for further information.

“Those who attend will be traveling with Mary and Joseph to the stable where Jesus will be born and Christmas carols sung,” she said. Participants are reminded that this is a narrated walking drama and that dressing for the occasion and bringing a flashlight is highly recommended. Following the event, folks are invited back to the Methodist church where refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. The Methodist church is located on the corner of Washington and West Street in

Fair Haven. For more information, contact Deedee Bruce at 802 265-3390.

Middletown Springs Middletown Springs Community Church will present its annual Christmas in the Park on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 6 p.m. on the green in Middletown Springs. The live nativity will take place first, followed by caroling and the lighting of the Christmas tree. Afterwards, attendees are welcome to warm up by the fire and enjoy some refreshments and conversation. The church

notes that the donation of cookies is always appreciated. “It’s been going on, I believe, since 32 years ago,” said Rita Hansen, who has been organizing the event for 10 years. “It’s mostly kids that partake, but adults are in it too. We’re hoping to have live animals this year there.” The church is located at 40 Park Avenue in Middletown Springs. For more information, contact Hansen at 802 235-2436.

Giant holiday celebration starts tonight in Granville By Krystle S. Morey Granville will be overtaken with holiday cheer Friday as the annual treelighting ceremony, holiday parade, Festival of Trees and Festival of Wreaths and Centerpieces take place.

Holiday parade Kicking off the evening will be a holiday parade, which will start at Great Meadow Federal Credit Union on East Main Street at 5:45 p.m. Santa Claus, local law enforcement officials and firemen will process down Main Street to Veterans Memorial Park on Quaker Street. The group will be accompanied by Santa’s Helpers, a group of nine second- and third-graders from Mary J. Tanner School. The students were chosen to ride along with the parade after exhibiting good behavior.

Tree lighting Once at the park, at about 6 p.m., one of Santa’s Helpers will have the impor-

tant responsibility of waving a magic wand to illuminate the park lights and start the music. “There are 40,000-plus lights in the park … and more than 150,000 lights decorating the village,” said Rick Roberts, Granville village clerk and member of the holiday decorating committee. The theme of this year’s tree lighting is “Rudolph’s Rockin’ Christmas.” The annual holiday celebration and treelighting will focus on the kids this year, with Kelly Clarkson’s “Run, Run Rudolph” at the center of it all. Holiday decorations, lights and more in the park will dance along with the music after Wyatt Loomis, one of Santa’s Helpers, waves the magic wand and gives the que. Also available in the park, until 9 p.m., will be goodies and treats from area businesses, fire pits to roast s’mores, live reindeer, horse-drawn carriage rides and more.

Family Christmas Party Saturday The Granville Assembly of God will host its annual Community Family Christmas Party this Saturday, Dec. 8 from 2- 4 p.m. Father Christmas will distribute gifts to children. There will be skits on the meaning of Christmas, a turkey giveaway, singing of

Christmas carols and interactive games. All families with children 5 to 12 years old are welcome. For additional information, visit the Family Christmas Party Facebook page. The Granville Assembly of God is located at 18 Bulkley Ave. in

FAIR HAVEN RANCH! On the edge of town is where you will find this home situated on 2.7 acres that offers extreme privacy while offering the land for a couple of animals. The main part of the house has an open floor plan, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, full basement that is dry due to the recent foundation work, new oil burner, and Hybrid electric heat pump. Beautiful appointed inground pool that overlooks the pretty Vermont scenery.

Santa visits Children will have the opportunity to sit on Santa’ lap and receive an early holiday present. At 4:30 p.m., a ticket booth will open for area youngsters to sign up for a time to visit Santa. Santa’s Helpers get to meet the jolly red giant first, but regular visits start at about 6:30 p.m. Nearly 500 children meet Santa in the park each year.

Festival of Trees The evening also features a pair of festivals, which run from 5 to 9 p.m.: The Festival of Trees at the Slate Valley Museum and the Festival of Wreaths and Centerpieces at the Pember Library and Museum. At the Slate Valley Museum, the seventh annual Festival of Trees will feature a display of decorated trees, carolers, snacks and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. There will even be a tree with hats and mittens available for free to anyone who needs them.

Several of the 40 or so trees, which have been decorated and donated to the museum by local organizations, businesses and crafty individuals, will be sold in a silent auction, which runs from Dec. 7-15. At exactly 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 15, the bids will be collected and the winners announced. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Slate Valley Museum.

Festival of Wreaths and Centerpieces Across the Mettowee River footbridge, the Pember Library and Museum’s fifth annual Festival of Wreaths and Centerpieces will run simultaneously. At the Pember, wreaths and centerpieces will be available for purchase in a silent auction, carolers will sing and snacks will be available. Bidding on wreaths will start Dec. 7 and close on Dec. 12. Winning bidders will be announced on Dec. 12. Proceeds from the wreath and centerpiece auction benefit the Pember Library and Museum.

Cookie swap in Sunday in Fair Haven If you love cookies, the Wooden Soldier in Fair Haven may have the event for you. The restaurant will host its sixth annual Cookie Swap on Dec. 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. Cathy Monty, one of the founders of the event, said the idea to host a cookie swap came from others in the area who did the same thing. “A few of us have been to them before in the past,” she said. “We just said, why don’t we do our own?” The rules for the cookie swap are simple: Bake a dozen of your favorite cookies to bring and take a dozen home with you.

The more cookies you bring, the more you get to take home. And, the event has proven popular. “We usually have about 20 people, if not more,” Monty said, adding that a lot of cookies get traded at the event. But it’s not just about the cookies. Three years ago, the hosts started a 50/50 raffle to benefit the Rutland County Humane Society, which has proven good for the organization over the years. “I think the first year it was like $100, last year it was $88,” she said. In addition to the raffle, door prizes are up for grabs and

light refreshments will be provided by the Wooden Soldier. The cookie swap has become a tradition for the restaurant, and Monty said that it’s both enjoyable for the staff of the Wooden Soldier and for those who attend. “People enjoy coming, and it’s something to do on a Sunday evening,” she said. “We like doing it.” The Wooden Soldier is located at 31 Main St. in Fair Haven. There is no charge at the door to enter - just bring some cookies. For more information, contact the restaurant at 802 2657985.

Whitehall Chamber to host Mini-Mall Dec. 8 A Holiday Fair and MiniMall will be held at the Whitehall Athletic Club on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, which has been a Christmas-time staple of Whitehall for many years was a tremendous success last year with a veritable horde of vendors turning out to hawk their wares and shoppers, estimated at “more than 200,” attending to scoop them up for last minute Christmas gifts. “It was extremely successful last year,” said Holly Rabideau, member of the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event. “We had foot traffic coming in throughout the day.” As of press time the chamber had 42 vendors signed up out of a maximum allotment of 48. Last year at this time

Basket Raffle in Wells Dec. 8 The Wells Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Christmas Basket Raffle on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the MWA Main Hall in Wells, Vt. Doors open at 5 p.m., drawing begins at 7 p.m. Food and refreshments will be available. Admission tickets: $5 for a sheet, additional sheets are $2 each. Prebuy on the Special Raffle, don’t need to be present to win: $5 for one ticket, $10 for three tickets. Tickets, information or to make a donation: Jill Davis at 802-342-6622.

there were 37 vendors, with the chamber ultimately garnering so much support they exceeded the allowed number of vendors. “I think we’re going to be over-full again this year,” Rabideau said. Among the vendors signed up are Buddy Bandanas, a Poultney, Vermont-based entrepreneur who crafts bandanas for pets and embroiders their names on them; lots of jewelry vendors, gourmet cupcakes, wildlife photos, maple products, rustic décor, baked goods and a multitude of handcrafted gifts. With so many vendors, Rabideau said the Mini-Mall presents shoppers a great opportunity for some last-minute Christmas shopping. “Here they can find unique gifts not found in stores,” she said.

Additionally Chazen Companies, a Queensburybased consultation firm enlisted to draft a comprehensive plan for the village will have a booth, allowing village residents the opportunity to learn more about and get involved in the future planning of the village. Last year, the Mini-Mall featured a raffle, with the grand prize being a massive stuffed bear. This year the chamber has opted to do away with the raffle and instead invite food vendors, like Joe’s Pizza, to setup shop. “A lot of times people aren’t here for the raffle,” said Rabideau. For more information about the Holiday Fair and Mini-Mall or to register as a vendor contact Rabideau at 518499-0220 or email her at Holly. Rabideau@cbna.com.

TIME TO SMARTEN UP Not so sure if Santa is going to be dropping any gear off for Johnny this year? Maybe you ought to let him know. He needs to be careful that he doesn’t blow all 11 months in the next three weeks. I hear Santa is cutting costs this year by raising standards. Don’t have him make an example of little Johnny. If you need to, bring him down to the Birdseye for dinner and a refresher, and let the Birdseye Diner put the merry back in Christmas.

‘Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs’ in Dorset The Dorset Players’ annual production for children and all those young at heart will be a delightful musical version of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Performances at the Dorset Playhouse will be held on Dec. 7 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. and on Dec. 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 2 p.m. The Dorset Players are happy to once again present a musical rendering of a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Carol Weiss’s wonderful adaptation of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” involves a powerful witch, a vain, jealous queen and her toadies, ladies-in-waiting, a magic mirror, the princess Snow White and her handsome prince, and, of course, seven dwarfs who help to save the day. Director Kevin O’Toole

and Musical Director Michael Gallagher have marshaled a talented cast of six adults and 11 children from eight area towns. There are charming songs, colorful costumes, many laughs, and a happy ending for everyone. Well, almost everyone. The cast includes Billy Jamieson as Sir Pompous, Courtney Carter as the Queen, and Lillian Kelly as the Mirror. All were featured in last season’s musical: “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” The Queen’s somewhat ditsy sibling, Witch Wicked, will be portrayed by Jennifer Lalli. The Queen’s hapless stooges, Sir Silly and Sir Clumsy, played by Luca Bowen and Luke McChesney, provide slapstick comedic relief. Snow White and her

dream prince will be played by Lily Gallagher and Aiden Kennedy. Elizabeth Spurr, Siobhan O’Keefe and Grace McDonald appear as the Queen’s three ladies in waiting. Rounding out the cast are the seven dwarfs, played by Isabel Mazzola, Molly Flint, Ryder Scott, Anabel Grattan, Penelope Kimball, Emma Daley and Camryn Monforte. Presented by Factory Point Place, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is proudly sponsored by New Morning Natural Foods, The Bank of Bennington and Baierlein Landscaping. For ticket information, call 802-867-5577 or visit www. dorsetplayers.org. The Dorset Playhouse is located at 104 Cheney Road in Dorset.

Tree of Remembrance and holiday crafting In this hustle-bustle season, it’s hard to fit in another event. But these tree lights are more than just dazzle. This, and similar “Tree of Remembrance” lightings in communities across the country, ask us to take a pause from the bustling and to remember loved ones and special people in our lives - in hometowns, in faraway places, and in the great beyond. Each bulb symbolizes not one person, but a throng of people netted together both in space and time, depending on each other; each trying to make the world better. Earlier this week, we received the news of President George H. W. Bush’s passing, and (those old enough to remember) probably thought of his phrase, “a thousand points of light,” referencing the power of volunteerism. Can complex societal problems be fully solved by volunteers? Probably not. But should we abandon such values: serving our communities, getting to know our neighbors, remembering our elders and predecessors, and passing on traditions

to our children? The lights on trees of remembrance remind us of these essential things, as we gather outdoors singing (often poorly but with great heart) in the cold night. And all money raised by “purchasing” bulbs continues to “pay forward” via the Castleton Woman’s Club local scholarship fund. Please join us at the library on Wednesday for fireside stories, singing, huddling together around the Woman’s Club spruce, a tiny transplant, now grown so tall out front, hot cocoa and warm conversation inside, Christmas music played by Skip Fenton’s CVS Jazz ensemble, cookies, gift books for children, and a visitor in red fur. Free and open to all; accessible except for the fire - use north entrance and west side parking to avoid stairs. Our holiday books and snowshoes have all been pulled from the closet. Preschool Story Hour continues at 10:30 a.m. every Friday with seasonal themes and artwork, and we have two upcoming programs for older kids which require

pre-registration. The first, a Gift-Making Workshop for kindergarten through fifth graders in collaboration with the Castleton Recreation Department has a $20 fee, and will be held on Friday, Dec. 14 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Drop your kids off at the library while you enjoy a night out, or time to get last minute errands done before vacation. Children will make holiday gifts for their loved ones with ideas and inspiration from Zo MarrHilliard. Registration was due yesterday, but if interested, call the library at 802-468-5574 to see if there is still space. On Saturday, Dec. 22 from 10:30 a.m. till noon, Mary Kearns will present Gingerbread House Decorating for students in fifth grade and up. Each participant will be given a small house to bedazzle with sweets. This is free, but enrollment is limited. You must call, email, or Facebook message the library to put your child on the list.

The Fair Haven indoor track team's roster boasts youthful talent.

Fair Haven has young track team this season Last year’s Fair Haven indoor track and field team was loaded with experienced seniors who were influential in helping the younger team members develop to ensure that the program enjoys continued success. “It led to the team’s widespread success which was seen at the end of the winter indoor season and throughout the spring outdoor season,” said coach Jon Oakman. With that strong group of seniors having graduated, the team members

who were mentored by them are now moving into the leadership role on a youthful squad. “We are a young team this year,” Oakman said. “I look to the older students to continue mentoring the younger athletes while continuing their development and a goal of working toward a state title.” Oakman named several returning athletes who he feels will play key roles this season. On the boys squad, senior Jack Gregory is a sprinter with his

sights set on some new school records. Fellow senior Sean Dougherty is a thrower whose guidance and experience will help the younger throwers. On the girls’ side, junior Janelle Kitchin ended her 2018 outdoor season by achieving a personal record in the long jump at the state meet. Sophomore Tessa Barber is also returning to indoor after a 2018 outdoor season that saw her qualify for the state meet as a freshman in the 100 Hurdles. Adelaide Oakman, a senior, is a returning fourth-year athlete

looking to build off last year’s high jump success. Senior Shantel Gregory is a returning senior who is looking to have a big year in long jump and the 55 meters. Newcomers that Oakman expects good things from include Gabe Ellis, Alexandra Williams, Evan Williams, Aunnika Brannack and Anna Breslen. GIRLS BASKETBALL

Poultney Blue Devils

Dedication will help Poultney's young team When a team loses a 1,000-point scorer, one might think the next season could be difficult, but that’s not the case with the Poultney girls basketball team. While Leanna Mason has taken her skills to Green Mountain College, Blue Devils coach Todd Hayes said there is still room for optimism this season. "We will miss her," Hayes said of Mason, "but we have a lot of good, young players." Without the post presence of Mason, Hayes said his team will have to rely more on shooting behind the arc. “I want to shoot a lot of 3s,” Hayes said. One of the top shooters of treys for Poultney could be the coach’s daughter, sophomore guard Grace Hayes, who will be playing her third season in the blue and gold. Hayes is an outstanding multisport athlete, but her father likes the overall athleticism of this year’s team. “We will be a lot more athletic than we have been here in a number of years,” Hayes said. One player who will add to Poultney's

athletic ability is Kassidy Mack, who played on the Blue Devils’ varsity as a freshman before transferring to rival Fair Haven last year. Hayes is thrilled to have Mack back in the fold. Veteran Julia Bruno is the only senior on the Poultney roster. Mack is the lone junior. "We are still a young team," Hayes said. "We have just one senior and one junior, but we have a good group of young players." Hayes is feeling good about the program because of the dedication of his players during the off-season. The turnout for summer league was outstanding and many of the Blue Devils participate in AAU. Poultney has a large group of players at the junior-high level that Hayes is excited about for the future. "We're not there yet, but we're going the right direction," Hayes said. MSJ, Proctor and West Rutland should be among Poultney’s toughest contenders. Poultney opens the season at Twin Valley on Dec. 7.

The Poultney girls' basketball team will open its season tonight at Twin Valley.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fair Haven Slaters

Fair Haven girls basketball team eye playoffs Despite losing one of their most talented players to a season ending injury last year, the Fair Haven girls basketball team still found their way to the Barre Auditorium for the Vermont Division II State Championship game, dropping a 33-25 decision to Mount Abraham in the finale. Again this year a talented Fair Haven team with a nice blend of experience and youth is gearing up for another deep playoff run. One thing that will be different this year is the return of Coach Kyle Wilson. After sitting out last season, Wilson is back to head up the Slaters’ program. “It’s the passion for coaching,” Wilson said. “I am really looking forward to the season.” Another reason Wilson may have chosen to return is the possibility of another run at a state title. “Expectations seem to always be high in Fair Haven,” Wilson said. “After losing some key members to graduation we may get off to a slower start than some because of so many young players with not much varsity experience.” Among the key returners that Wilson listed are Kaleigh Brown, who led the

Slaters in scoring in last year’s title game with 11 points, Ryleigh Coloutti, Courtney Brewster and Kyleigh Grenier. Wilson also has some younger players he feels will play key roles. “I feel that Katrina Bean and Kerigan Disorda will be able to fit in nicely,” Wilson added. “There are a number of junior varsity players from last year that will be in the mix.” Wilson predicted that Mill River, Springfield and Otter Valley will be among the teams to watch in the division. The Slaters will also play a difficult non-division schedule which includes Rutland, Brattleboro, Burr and Burton, Mount Anthony and Windsor. “We also play Northeast Clinton out of New York which is a quality club,” Wilson noted. Wilson is excited to be back and says that Slater Nation can expect to see a little old and maybe a little new from his squad. “We are going to be young, athletic and fast,” Wilson explained. “We may try to experiment with a few new things, but our defense in the half court will be our staple as always.”

CHEERLEADING

Fair Haven Slaters

Fair Haven cheerleaders tout experience Joey Williams is entering her second year as coach of the Fair Haven cheer program. The former coach at neighboring Poultney, a former Blue Devil cheerleader herself, feels that with a year of experience things are going a bit more smoothly. “Things aren’t much different this year than last,” Williams said. “but I’ve kind of learned the ropes of the Slater way.” Something that Williams has playing in her favor this season is that not only does she know the girls better and they know her better, the squad returns plenty of experience. The Slater cheer squad is comprised of a senior and nine juniors, eight of whom were on last year’s team. Riley Taylor, Chea Ko, Makayla Woodbury, Beanie Camara, Briana Clark, Savanna Desrocher, and Olivia Scher all return to provide experience to the squad. Miranda Scott and Taylor Coloutti are new to the Slater team this season. “We’re a pretty experienced team,” Williams added. The goals that Williams has set for the team are similar to last year as she tries to rebuild the Fair Haven program. “We want to have fun at games, and we want to learn our routines so that we can do well in our competitions,” she said. One hurdle the Slaters will have to overcome again this year is the lack of boys on the roster. Having the male team members does help, but Williams feels there is a lot of stunting her team can do with success.

Good Luck Slaters & Blue Devils!

Fair Haven cheerleaders look forward to learning new rountines for games and competitions. “It’s nothing they’re used to having (at Fair Haven),” she said. “Not like when I was at Poultney when we had a ton of guys. Guys do have a little more strength, but really it’s not much different.” Besides the Vermont State Championships in February, the Fair Haven cheerleaders will compete in the Central Vermont competition and the VCCA. Williams concedes that a part of cheering is being on the sidelines at games cheering for the Fair Haven boys and girls teams, and entertaining the

crowd, but it’s much more than that. “We cheer at the game, but then we’re also at practices trying to learn our routine to go and do our ‘game,’” which is a

three minute competition,” Williams said. “The competitions are our time to go prove what we have been working on.”

CHEERLEADING

Poultney Blue Devils

Poultney cheerleaders working hard to get back on track The Poultney cheerleading program has long been one of Vermont state’s strongest. Last year the Blue Devils squad went through a bit of a transition year, not participating in the state championships and moving on to New England’s for the first time in recent memory. Coach Megan Franzoni is hoping that her team can get back on track this season. “We have about half of our team that cheered for us last year,” Franzoni said. “We have some seniors who came back after being away for two or three years. So I’m excited abut that.” One thing that is different is that the Blue Devils are an all girl team this season for the first time in awhile. Typically the strength of the Poultney team has been being able to have a few male members to help with the stunting. Franzoni thinks that not having any boys on the team could challenge the Blue Devils to be better.” “It will make us work harder, because we will have to pick up the slack for the boys in stunting,” Franzoni explained. “but they’ll be a bit more focused because of it.” To get back to being a solid contender at the state and New England level Franzoni was clear about what the Blue Devils need to improve on. “Probably stunting is our hardest spot right now,” Franzoni said. “Tumbling is always weak for us, but we are working on that at Peak again this season so that will help us.” Emily McIntyre and Olivia Cook are the only two seniors on the team. Bella Milazzo and Lauren Schreiber lead the

Poultney cheerleaders hopeful to make it to state competition. junior class. Kylie Davis, Pam Bettis, Chelbie Olden and Hannah Noble lead a talented sophomore class. Franzoni is pleased with what she has seen so far from her team, and feels with hard work they will be able to do some good things this season. “They’re a really hardworking group,” Franzoni praised. The target for date for Poultney is the last Saturday in February when the Ver mont State Cheerleading Championships are held.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Poultney Blue Devils

Poultney boys eye return to playoffs When Bob Coloutti took over the Poultney boys basketball program he put a five-year plan into effect to bring the Blue Devils back into contention for a state title. Last year, in only his second season, Coloutti guided Poultney to the Vermont Division III championship game at the Barre Auditorium, falling to Sharon Academy. Coloutti admits that the Blue Devils were a little ahead of schedule and understands that things could be different this season. “Last year was kind of a surprise to us,” he said. “We weren’t really expecting that run that we had. It was awesome and great, but now everyone is gunning for us. “I know we’re going to get everybody’s best shot now.” Poultney should be strong in the paint as it has one of the biggest lineups in Division III. Levi Haviland returns up front, as does Heath Mason. Jon Baker also is back on the team after a one-year absence. Wing players Eli Rosario and Taylor Dunlap will provide the Blue Devils with some shooting from the perimeter and have experience. Tom Dunbar is a newcomer up from the junior varsity who Coloutti thinks can contribute. “We’re expecting big things from him,” Coloutti said. An area that Coloutti is concerned about is his backcourt. Rob Brill graduated and Levi Allen suffered a serious knee injury in football. With another key guard electing not to play this year, the Blue Devils’ backcourt could take time

ROSTER Levi Haviland Eli Rosario Heath Mason Taylor Dunlap Jon Baker Tom Dunbar Ryan Alt Jesse Combs Chris Ray Lucas Van Nostrand Coach: Bob Coloutti to develop. “The first month of the season is going to be trial and error and try to see what we have,” Coloutti said. “Obviously losing Levi really hurt, but we can adjust and we will adjust.” Coloutti believes that being better late in the season than at the start is a goal for Blue Devils. “Being better in March than we are in November,” he said. “Record doesn’t really matter because once you get in the tournament you just need to win the next game” Coloutti is not ruling out another trip to “The Aud.” “It’s not easy to get there. Obviously it’s a goal to try to get up there. When you get in the playoffs, win two games and you’re up there. We’ll see where the cards fall and go from there.” Poultney opens the season on Dec. 12, hosting Leland and Gray.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fair Haven Slaters

Fair Haven's goal: Another title The Fair Haven boys made it to the Barre Auditorium a year ago where they won the Vermont Division II State Championship in basketball. The Slaters took down Milton, 59-47, for their first state title in 16 years. Last year’s success has not changed a thing for Fair Haven. The goal remains the same. “Barre is always the goal,” said veteran coach Bob Prenevost. For the Slaters to meet the program’s annual lofty expectations, there are smaller goals for the season. “We want to get better every day,” Prenevost said. The Slaters return plenty of talent, including last year’s leading scorer, senior Cam Coloutti, who poured in 29 points in that championship game. Seniors Parker Morse and Andrew Ferrara are also listed among the top returners for the Slaters. Fair Haven also will feature a solid junior class paced by Aubrey Ramey and Joey Gannon. Gannon began last year’s season on the Fair Haven junior varsity squad, but when he was moved up to the varsity squad his impact was immediate. Among the newcomers that Prenevost is planning on to contribute are junior Andrew Lanthier and sophomores Kohlby Murray and Zack Ellis. Prenevost believes that MSJ, Otter Valley and Mill River will be among the teams to beat in the MVL Division II

The Fair Haven boys' basketball team has aspirations of claiming a second state championship title. race. The Slaters will also tangle with difficult Division I opponents Rutland and Burr and Burton. Prenevost feels that his team had many valuable strengths. “We are athletic, interchangeable and have a lot of depth,” Prenevost said. Fair Haven opens the season and defense of its state championship on Friday, Dec. 7, hosting Springfield.

WRESTLING

Fair Haven Slaters

Fair Haven wrestlers 'tough as nails' The Fair Haven wrestling team is having the same issue that many sports team are having lately. A lack of numbers. The Slaters have only six members on the squad right now but that hasn’t dampened coach Scott Schaddock’s enthusiasm. “Our numbers have dropped greatly, but we are hoping more will come out in the coming weeks,” Schaddock said. “We have no seniors on the team this season, but in the first week of the season we have four athletes who are practicing.” Freshman Rian Trask and junior Ryan Mason are expected to wrestle but have not started practicing yet. The Fair Haven wrestlers who are out for the team have a lot of ability. Owen Doran is a sophomore and was a former Youth Wrestler with the Slater Wrestling Club who has been away a couple years but he looks tough. Sam Worthing is another sophomore who took third at the Vermont State Championships and is looking to

capture a state title this year. Todd Sumner, a junior, is a first-year wrestler with plenty of talent and potential as he continues to train. Dylan Lee is a junior who was fifth at Vermont States last year and is looking to improve on his performance to be another State champion. Schaddock is hoping that a strong youth program will help to improve the Slaters’ numbers in the future. “Three of our wrestlers are from our Slater Wrestling Club which has 30 kindergarten through sixth graders which grows every season,” Schaddock said. Even with the lack of participation Schaddock believes that dome individual champions could emerge from the group. “This team will again be small but tough as nails and will again work toward bringing a state champion back to Fair Haven from this season’s 50th state wrestling championships,” Schaddock said.

Fair Haven bowlers eye a Top-5 finish this season.

Fair Haven keglers optimistic In the 2016-2017 season, their first season in existence, Fair Haven claimed the Vermont State High School Bowling title. The team previously had been a club program but wasted no time joining the ever-growing list of Slater athletic squads to earn a championship banner. After suffering some key losses last year to graduation, Fair Haven finished sixth in the state, falling to Essex in the state quarterfinals. Slaters’ coach Vern Seaver is hopeful the team can take a step forward this winter. “Our expectations for this season are to be competitive and finish in the top five,” Seaver said. Seaver built the Fair Haven bowling program from the ground level, having to go out and recruit just to have a team in the early stages. With only six bowlers on the roster, Seaver knows that everyone will have an integral role.

“All of our team members will play key roles as we only have six bowlers this year,” Seaver said. Two of Fair Haven’s key bowlers return for the season: Kerry Crossman and Katelyn Kennett. Seaver lauded the skill and leadership of Crossman. Newcomers on the Slater squad include Joseph Turgeon, Nicholas Snide, Chance Clark and Colby Wade. One of the toughest opponents for Fair Haven this year will once again be Essex. South Burlington and Randolph should also have strong teams, Seaver said. Seaver doesn’t yet have a sense of how the season will go, but one of the coach’s goals is that his bowlers have fun. “As we haven’t really started the season yet it’s hard to say how this season will go,” Seaver said. “With the newest members being young we hope to stay
