Tea party Sunday in Pawlet By Adam Cook Pawlet Public Library is looking to bring the community together to relax this Sunday, Dec. 16, by hosting its holiday tea from 2 to 4 p.m. “This is the first year that we’ve had a holiday tea,” said Mary Lou Willits, the library’s director. The library will provide some of the refreshments for the event but Willits said that people are encouraged to bring along their own goodies to share. And while this is a tea, it’s not just for adults. “The library has dedicated children’s room and library, which is spacious,” she said. “We’ll have herb

C.U. features ‘death-row’ poetry By Adam Cook In 1992, a young man who had run away from home was shot dead while trying to steal an elderly man’s truck in Eugene, Oregon. At the trial, the man was not convicted, as he was defending his personal property. At the same time, Seattle-based author Tim Moxley was finishing up his education at the nearby University of Oregon, and halfway through his first novel, when he heard about the incident. “I kind of felt like, ‘I love the story that I’m working

Imagine historic East Poultney Green without its beautiful meetinghouse! One of Vermont’s most photographed and treasured historic churches, the East Poultney meetinghouse (United Baptist Church of Poultney), needs your support now. Due to age and weather, damage to the exterior ‘building envelope’ is at a critical point. Restoration is still possible and within means if we all pitch in. More than $120,000 has already been raised for restoration and building updates, thanks to the efforts of church and community leaders and historic preservation enthusiasts. The project has also earned national recognition from the National Fund for Sacred Places, enabling the church to receive at least $100,000 in additional funds from a matching grant program managed by Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation – the more we raise, the more we’re eligible to receive! “This Historic Building is everyone’s heritage... Though the congregation is small – the spirit of the Poultney community is strong. Strong enough to work together and give the more than 200-year-old church a $400,000 makeover.” The Rutland Herald Please join us in restoring this community and state treasure by making a donation or 3-year pledge by January 31, 2019. They can enjoy having tea just like the grownups.” Willits said there’s plenty of room for whomever shows up. The library currently has service for 55 people and there’s been quite a buzz created around the library’s patrons about the event. “I know we won’t run out of tea, and I doubt we’ll run out of goodies,” Willits said. “We’re excited. I don’t know how many will come, but we’re certainly prepared for over 50.” The library also offers two book clubs, a weekly classic book group that meets on Wednesdays at 7 p.m., and a ‘tea read’ book club that meets on the third Thursday of every month at 1 p.m., though the tea read is unrelated to the holiday tea event. The library is at 141 School St. in Pawlet. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information, call the library at 802 325-3123.

DeBonis graduates from Snelling Center The Snelling Center for Government announced on Dec. 10 that Brooke DeBonis of Poultney graduated from the Vermont School Leadership Project. DeBonis is currently the Principal at Mettawee Community School in West Pawlet. As a participant in the Vermont School Leadership Project, DeBonis joined 24 other educators from across the state in a unique program that offers intensive professional development for superintendents, principals, curriculum and special education directors, as well as other education professionals who have proven leadership abilities and seriously aspire to leadership

roles. The Class of 2018 embarked on their leadership journey in July 2017 and met for seven overnight sessions with a total of 18 seminar days. The final celebration for the Class of 2018 was held on Nov. 10 at Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee. Social entrepreneur and educator, Hal Colston, served as the keynote speaker, inspiring the group to remember to bring love into their work with students. Colston’s message highlighted the importance of their role and their work in not only the lives of students but also the needs of society. Through theoretical discussions, experiential activities and personal reflection, associ-

ates considered and applied concepts related to leadership, education systems, organizational change and community. The Class of 2018 is the 13th graduating class of the Vermont Leadership School Project, and DeBonis joins more than 250 other graduates who are making a difference in Vermont’s schools. Recruitment for the Vermont School Leadership Project Class of 2020 is now underway. The Class of 2020 will begin its program in July 2019 and meet through November 2020. ther from the truth.” His goal behind the book was to educate people through the words of these death-row inmates. “Education, not incarceration, has got to be the primary focus of any true civilized society,” he said. “That’s what I wanted to do with this book.” When the collection of poems was all put together, Moxley said he had a difficult time finding someone to publish his book. “I don’t call them rejection slips, I call them non-acceptance letters,” he said. “But I got 52 of them from every publisher I sent a copy of the manuscript to.” The last non-acceptance letter came on the day the execution of Timothy McVeigh was announced. Undeterred, Moxley decided he would publish it himself. Just outside the auditorium where Moxley gave his presentation is the Christine Price Gallery. On the right side of the gallery stands “Cellblock Visions” by curator Phyllis Kornfeld. Kornfeld has been teaching

art in prisons for 36 years. The artwork contained in this gallery, and in the published book of the same name, was made by prisoners from 1983 and 2011. “These artists tell the truth, without self-consciousness, unfettered by concepts and theory,” Kornfeld said on her website. “This pure expression of individual personality has produced a wide variety of styles and imagery, and at the same time, the commonalities of their imprisonment color every piece.” The artwork in the gallery is made using different mediums. Some represent the more conventional mediums, such as acrylics, colored pencils, and pen and ink. Others involve more creative mediums, such as coffee, or even carvings from a bar of soap. According to her website, Kornfeld never really had to do much to get the true potential of the artists to come out. “I try not to get in the way of the inmate’s natural expression, no conventional “lessons” or the

The authors of the poems are, or were, death-row inmates. A woman in Nevada, who went for a drive down a Reno sidewalk and killed seven people. A man in Virginia who shot his elderly neighbor. And it always struck Moxley how divided people were on what he was doing. “I was always struck by the divisions between people who thought it was such a great thing, and people who were truly angered at the idea that what they thought I was doing was trying to make famous the people in this book,” he said. “Nothing could have been fur-

Breakfast with Santa a hit Breakfast with Santa, sponsored since the 1980’s by Poultney Woman’s Club, was another successful event. Saturday, Dec. 8 was a frigid two degrees at 8 a.m., but 160 hardy folks ventured out for a hot breakfast and a warm welcome from Santa on Main Street. As for many years, the cost was still only $1.25 and we so appreciate donations from our local Shaw’s, Stewart’s, Williams’ Hardware, Pruniers in Bomoseen and Hannaford in Rutland. Eighteen club members were assisted by guest chefs, Bob Isherwood and Gary Smith, two loyal friends, Christine Gamble and Colleen Duffy, Jack Roberts and of course, Santa, Dale Lott. It continues to be a wonderful way to begin the holiday season and share our many blessings in Poultney.

National Theater Live National Theatre Live, the best of British theatre broadcast to cinemas around the world, comes to Burr and Burton Academy’s Riley Center for the Arts on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and $8 for students. But at the fringes of a war-torn empire the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra and Mark Antony have fallen fiercely in love. In a tragic fight between devotion and duty, obsession becomes a catalyst for war. Burr and Burton’s Riley Center for the Arts is located at 143 Seminary Ave. in Manchester.

TIME TO SMARTEN UP Not so sure if Santa is going to be dropping any gear off for Johnny this year? Maybe you ought to let him know. He needs to be careful that he doesn’t blow all 11 months in the next three weeks. I hear Santa is cutting costs this year by raising standards. Don’t have him make an example of little Johnny. If you need to, bring him down to the Birdseye for dinner and a refresher, and let the Birdseye Diner put the merry back in Christmas.

Fort Ticonderoga to reenact the ‘Christmas Riot’ Saturday Fort Ticonderoga on Dec. 15 will present a living history event: “RIOT! Yankees vs. Buckskins.” Throughout the day, visitors will participate in engaging presentations, weapons demonstrations, historic trades, and living history vignettes. Watch the disunity between officers unfold during an intense riot that plagued the

American army in 1776. A special pop-up exhibit on display Dec. 15 only will present one of the garrison’s original orderly books. “These official documents which buried the details of the altercation and the riot between Pennsylvanians and Massachusetts soldiers has been known only circumstantially through two diaries and

memoirs,” said Beth L. Hill, Fort Ticonderoga president and chief executive officer.” Fort Ticonderoga Museum Curator Matthew Keagle recently discovered new evidence about this moment of American disunity. Sitting under noses of generations of historians is an event that shatters popular notions of the Revolutionary War. On Christmas day 1776, an

altercation unfolded at Ticonderoga that resulted in American blood being shed by other Americans. “Late on Christmas Day 1776, Pennsylvania soldiers attacked the camp of a Massachusetts Regiment and assaulted the regiment’s almost 60-year-old colonel, ransacked their quarters, and fired at the Massachusetts men,” said Keagle. “The violent

assault was the explosion of grievances over issues of class, race, and military professionalism that divided soldiers from the “south” with those from New England, and were exacerbated by alcohol and boredom in garrison at Ticonderoga.” To learn more about this living history event, call 518-5852821 or visit www.fortticonderoga.org.

Parade

Tanner School parking lot and drop them off on Main Street. Buses provided by the Granville Central School District will complete the route about every 20 minutes. Buses will transport spectators back to the pick-up points following the announcement of

winners. Parking is also available at various lots in the village including the free parking lot on East Main Street, the Granville High School lots on Potter Avenue and Church Street and the Mettowee River Park on Church Street.

There will be no parking on one side of Church Street and a portion of Quaker Street, near the park, will be closed the evening of the parade. “Some of the floats are quite large,” Pauquette said. Following the parade, floats will be parked along Quaker

Street near the park for viewing. “I can’t wait to see how many participants we will have this year! I’ve got lots of fun surprises,” Pauquette said. One surprise includes Santa & Mrs. Claus participating in and closing the parade again this year.

Continued from front page Street,” said Pauquette. From 5 to 6:15 p.m. two shuttles will pick up viewers at Price Chopper and at the Mary J.
