The historic East Poultney Meeting House on the village green in East Poultney

Historic church seeks renovation donations By Serena Kovalosky

LOCAL JOB OPENINGS INSIDE!  See page 18.

One of Vermont’s most-photographed and treasured historic churches needs help. The white-steepled United Baptist Church of Poultney, also known as the East Poultney Meeting House, is a familiar visual focal point of the classic New England-style vil-

lage green in East Poultney. Due to age and weather, damage to the exterior “building envelope” of the more than 200-year-old church has reached a critical point.

Church Continued from front page “If we don’t fix it now, we could start seeing serious structural damage in 10 years, which would greatly increase the cost of repairs,” said the Rev. Todd Eaton, the church pastor. The church needs $400,000 to restore, which will include an upgrade to their handicapped accessibility according to standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The upgrade will include installing a lift connecting the basement to the second-floor sanctuary. For a small congregation of “20 to 40 parishioners on any given Sunday,” it could have been a daunting task, but the church members, community leaders and historic preservation enthusiasts has come together and raised $127,000 to date. “It’s been a blessing,” Eaton said. The project has also earned national recognition from the National Fund for Sacred Places, enabling the church to receive $100,000 in additional funds in the form of a one-toone matching grant program managed by Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. For funds raised over $100,000 the grant will match additional donations two-toone.

“Our church was one of only a handful from across the nation to receive this grant,” Eaton said. “It’s impressive for something like that to happen to a little church.” But there is still more money to be raised, and this “little church” is now reaching out to the community-at-large to help with the remainder of the funds necessary to undertake the renovations. The Federal-style church was built in 1804-1805 by architect Elisha Scott. The building was “modernized” in the late 1830s when a second floor was built, raising the sanctuary to the second floor. The most recent extensive repairs were in 1983, when a basement was built. When Eaton arrived as the church pastor five years ago, one of his goals was to promote the importance of reaching out beyond its small congregation by opening the church doors to the greater community - literally. “The church doors had always been closed during East Poultney Day,” said Eaton. Now the church remains open during the festivities and vendors are invited to set up inside. “It’s a tip of the hat to the old days when the first floor became the ‘town space’ for meetings and farmers’ markets after the sanctuary was moved to the second floor,” Eaton said. Now businesses and organizations are welcome to use the first floor for meetings and activities and can use the church’s audio-visual equip-

ment. The Rotary Club and the Horace Greeley Foundation Symposium are among the organizations that take advantage of the building’s facilities. As there is no youth center in Poultney, the church hosts weekly Youth Nights. Eaton invites the community-at-large and beyond to consider making a donation to help with the church renovations. “The church is on the National Register of Historic Places,” said Eaton. “There’s so much history here, from the Underground Railroad to its ties to George Jones, co-founder and former publisher of the ‘New York Times’ and an East Poultney native.” “But it’s not just to protect the church’s historical significance,” he said. “The church has made strides to become more of a community asset, not just a church asset.” Eaton said he feels restoration is possible and within their means if everyone pitches in. “We’re getting a lot of traction – it’s very positive,” he said. “We’re excited.” The deadline for donations is Jan. 31 and may be made through the church website at www.ubcofpoultney.com. Checks are also accepted, payable to United Baptist Church of Poultney Capital Campaign and sent to 1500 E. Main St., Poultney, Vt. 05764. Citing failing health of the restaurant’s owner, AJ’s Fine Food & Spirits closed its doors last week. The Scott family, operators of the 37-year-old Granville eatery, announced Angelo J. Scott, Jr., “Scottie,” would be leaving the business. “AJ’s has been in operation for over 35 years on Quaker Street in the Village of Granville. And until recently, Scottie has been a fixture at the restaurant, happiest among the community he holds dear,” read a news release from the business. “I would like to thank all of our loyal customers and employees over the years who have supported AJ’s and made this business possible. We couldn’t have done it without you,” the release continued. Scott also owned “Scottie’s” restaurant on Main Street until it closed in October 2015 and was sold in 2016. That business was operated by the family for 83 years.

Castleton’s Director of Upward Bound Jennifer Jones traveled to Washington D.C. to help deck the White House halls for the holiday season.

Castleton staff decks White House halls Last month, Castleton’s Director of Upward Bound Jennifer Jones traveled to Washington D.C. to help deck the White House halls for the holiday season. Jones was one of nearly 150 volunteers — and the only from Vermont — to take part in this annual tradition, dating back to 1973 when Richard Nixon’s wife invited volunteers from across the country to help decorate the People’s House. The White House received the most applications ever this year, with 7,000 people hoping to help honor the unique heritage of America with this year’s theme, “American Treasures.” Hopeful volunteers must complete a short application and essay about why they would be a good fit for the experience. Interns from the White House Visitors Office read every essay and select the volunteers. “In my essay, I mentioned the two deployments I had been through with my husband, his 31-year career with the Vermont Army National Guard, that I am a first-generation American on my mother’s

side and that she had been a World War II refugee from the Soviet Union escaping communism, and that I work in TRIO Upward Bound,” Jones said. The first day of decorating, Jones was assigned to “Team Twinkle” and spent eight hours at a government warehouse making bows, dusting off and repairing ornaments from previous years, and helping to select decorations. “Team Twinkle was one of three teams which would be working in the warehouse that day, but then moving the White House to put lights on 55 natural trees in every public room and the residence,” she said. The next day, Jones and her crew began lighting trees around the White House, including two 17-foot tall trees, which took five hours for two teams of six people to fully light. While decorating, Jones and the other volunteers were informed that the President and the First Family would be leaving the property on Marine One shortly to begin the Thanksgiving holiday, and Jones took a seat in the Red

At the end of the day, volunteers were treated to a special tour, including viewing the Diplomats Reception Room and the Rose Garden. Forest Service tells snowmobilers to use caution Holiday concert Sunday Snowmobilers should travel responsibly and yield to other users,” said Sinclair. The maximum speed is 35 miles per hour on state and federal land and Vermont has a tough Snowmobiling While Intoxicated Law that covers alcohol, as well as drugs. The U.S. Forest Service is also warning the public of the dangers associated with riding, hiking and skiing on frozen water bodies. Trail users are encouraged to be mindful of fallen trees and other hazards they may encounter. Operators must maintain control of their snowmobile while riding; keep to the right at all times, wear helmets, and stay on designated trails only. All snowmobiles must be legally registered, have liability insurance, and operators must purchase a VAST Trails Maintenance Assessment decal. Officials also encourage winter trail users to pack a flashlight, cell phone, food, and extra warm clothing in case of an emergency.

“We are concerned about user safety. Patrols which are aimed at enforcing rules and regulations, monitoring trail conditions and providing visitor information will occur throughout the Forest,” said John Sinclair, Forest Supervisor for the Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests. The GMNF will continue to work closely with state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) to make sure that users of the trail system are respectful, responsible, law abiding, and safe. With additional snow expected in the coming weeks, the U.S. Forest Service is looking forward to a successful snowmobile season and wants to encourage all riders to put safety first. Green Mountain National Forest (GMNF) officials are recommending that snowmobilers exercise caution when operating on the National Forest, and all lands, in Vermont this winter. GMNF officials remind snowmobile enthusiasts to heed to all gates and signs and to stay off roads and trails that are closed. Due to heavy snow in November, Forest Service employees and several snowmobile clubs throughout Vermont have been working to clear trees and other debris from trails. Officials want to remind trail users to use extra caution early in the season as some trees may be weak due to snow accumulation and downed tree hazards are likely. Weather permitting, snowmobile use is allowed on designated trails within the GMNF for four months beginning on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018 and ending on Monday, April 15, 2019.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SANTA You know Santa is really quite elusive. He flies in, lands on people’s roofs and decks, stuffs himself down their chimney, eats all of the snacks on the dresser, drops a few gifts and then takes off. He ought to stick around a little longer! Here at the Birdseye, we would like to give him a meal or something, it can’t be easy driving all night. At least we could hook him up with a fresh cup of coffee or maybe a hot sandwich. Being such a great fellow, he deserves a solid meal. So if you see Santa this year, let him know that the Birdseye Diner is looking for him. (But please ask him not to park on the roof.)

Granville chorus Concert Jan. 4 The 30 members of the Granville Area Chorus will be filling the South Granville Congregational Church with the sounds of Christmas on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019. There is no admission fee, but donations are accepted to defray purchasing expenses for the chorus. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. with the chorus and audience joining to sing “O Come, All Ye Faithful”. The chorus will continue with “Christ Is Born” from Handel’s Judas Maccabeus. Next will be a traditional Spanish song called “Sing Ye All Noel”. Mary Tooley will accompany the choir on her flute for two of the next three songs. First is a Celtic piece entitled “Shepherd’s Joy;” followed by “Christ Was Born for You,” which is an arrangement of “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” and “Infant Holy, Infant Lowly.” The third piece is “Born Is Emmanuel, which is based on the “Ukranian Bell Carol.” The men of the chorus are featured on “Sing This Night with Joy,” which is an arrangement of “God Rest Ye Merry

Gentlemen,” and is followed by a poignantly beautiful piece featuring the women called “The Yearning.” The main section of the concert ends with A Spiritual Christmas, which combines “I’m Gonna Sing,” “Wonderful Counselor,” “Wasn’t That a Mighty Day? and “Go, Tell It on the Mountain.” Next, the GAC will present their version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” during which they will invite children from the audience to assist them with the “days.” Finally, the concert will end with the traditional combined singing of the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah. The concert will be accompanied by Mrs. Barbara Chellis and conducted by Miss Crystal Everdyke. The ladies of the South Granville Congregational Church will host a reception for the chorus and audience directly following the concert. The South Granville Congregational Church is located at 7149 State Route 149 in Granville.

Holiday Wishes from Castleton Free Library Happy Solstice! Winter has officially arrived, and Christmas is just days away. You may be feeling magical, stressed, joyful, depressed. Maybe you spent way too much money and are looking for some free fun to balance things. Maybe you can’t wait to spend cozy time reading with your kids by a fire (with chestnuts?), or maybe they are already driving you crazy with excitement, and you’re wondering how you’ll possibly endure that long car ride to see the relatives. Maybe we can help. Please include a visit to Castleton Free Library as part of your “holiday wellness plan” to stock up on de-stressors – no credit card needed! Note that we will be closed on both Christmas and New Year’s Day, and will have limited hours on the two Eves, opening only from 3-5 p.m. on those two Mondays, but we’ll keep regular hours the other days

(unless road conditions are bad). Please follow us on Facebook and/or Instagram for updates; check our website, or call 802-468-5574. So here are some ideas: We still have loads of holiday books on the shelves, cookbooks for last-minute baking or entertainment ideas, and Christmas DVD’s. For the car rides, or bedtime listening, borrow some audio books on CD – we have many titles for adults and older kids, including some from the popular DCF Reading List (Dorothy’s List) for 5th-8th graders. Another option for younger children is our collection of musical CD’s, with over 50 titles. Genres include world music (many Putumayo titles), lullabies, kid rock, folk, classical intros, and more. If you have any kind of device on which to download audio or eBooks (maybe you received one as a gift?), you can

access two extensive libraries of downloadables through our subscriptions with Listen-Up Vermont (via the new Libby app through Overdrive), and/or RB Digital (which now includes many Pimsleur foreign language titles - Thai Short Course, anyone?). Downloads and apps for your phone or tablet are all free. Browse titles through links on our webpage. We’re happy to help you get started if the set-up is confusing. But perhaps you feel a little stir crazy, and need fresh air and exercise. If weather cooperates with a snow blanket for Christmas, come borrow some snowshoes! We have 20 pairs in three sizes for lending, thanks to last year’s generous gift from the Vermont Department of Health. All you need is your library card for a week of free fun! Best holiday wishes from CFL!

GIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE!

THE PERFECT GIFT Is there such a thing as the “perfect gift”? Will it cost more than you can afford? What if the person you are giving it to doesn’t like it? So much stress and this is supposed to be the happiest time of the year? Well, let me tell you a little secret. We all have the opportunity to give the perfect gift. It doesn’t cost a thing, and the recipient will cherish it forever! Best part is you have choices on what to give. How about giving your time? Is there someone you haven’t made time for and they really mean a lot to you? Even 10-20 minutes could make a difference in someone’s life. Is there someone you need to make amends with? Forgiveness is a beautiful gift. I believe friendship is the greatest gift of all—and I am so fortunate to have the best friends and family ever. They are my perfect gifts. May you all receive perfect gifts this holiday season. Remember, if a gift is given with love, you can’t go wrong. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all!
