Whipple City Festival June 15 & 16 The Whipple City Festival was once just a local craft fair, but over the past 26 years the festival has grown into one of the top spring events in Southern Washington County. The annual festival will be held June 15-16 (Father’s Day Weekend) with events that take place throughout the village and parks of Greenwich. The festival opens with a parade at 6 p.m. on Friday with this year’s theme, “Heritage and History.” Businesses, families, groups and individuals are invited to get creative with themed floats for the event. Live music will be heard in Mowry Park all weekend, including the popular groups Buck2Fifty for a Friday night performance and Eastbound Jesus, scheduled for Saturday. An artisans’ market will
feature authentic handmade items created by artists and craftspeople from throughout the region. The Kids’ Zone will return to Academy Street with inflatable activities, laser tag and more. Affordable family games, food vendors, exhibits, free horse-drawn carriage rides, face-painting, caricaturists and more will entertain throughout the weekend. Saturday morning, the popular Whipple City 5K race (and a 10K for the more athletic) will offer a family-oriented run/walk through the village and farmland. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Greenwich Central High School Scholarship Fund. Historical re-enactors representing the Revolutionary War, Civil War and World Wars I and II will be in Dorr Park all day Saturday. The Human Foosball Tournament
returns this year with a life-size Foosball Table created and teams set up just like in real foosball. The famous Whipple City Festival Cake Wheel will have everyone spinning the roulette wheel and placing their bets for the chance to take home delicious goodies baked by local home chefs, who “go all out” with their pies, cakes, cookies and cupcakes. Local beer and wine complements the great food served up all weekend, with churches and local restaurants featuring barbecues, fried dough and more. For more information, or to participate as a vendor or register for activities, contact the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce at 518-692-7979 or visit www.greenwichchamber.org or visit the Whipple City Festival Facebook page.

Tractor Parade a holiday favorite Celebrating Christmas countrystyle, the annual Holiday Lighted Tractor Parade in Greenwich kicks off the season with thousands of lights…and more than 55 tractors! The popular parade, now in its sixth year, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, the weekend before Thanksgiving. Sponsored by the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, the parade features tractors, wagons and floats trimmed with holiday lighting and decorations that awe and amaze spectators. “It’s an all-tractor Tractor Parade,” said Greenwich Chamber president Suzanne Becker in an interview with RFD TV last year. “At least half of the tractors have a float attached on the back.” To insure the maximum “wow factor,” organizers stipulate that all entries must be lighted with a minimum of 1,000 lights per tractor and another minimum of 1,000 lights for each float. “In reality, most of the tractors have around 5,000 lights on them,” Becker said. “It’s a lot of fun to watch!” The parade begins at the Greenwich Central High School parking lot and proceeds down Woodlawn to Church Street, then down Main Street where grandstands are set up and each tractor is announced. Then it continues on to Washington Street and up Bleeker to Hill Street, where the parade ends. Creativity is highly
encouraged and prizes are awarded. Last year’s entries featured members of the Salem FFA dressed as the Whos in Whoville for their float, com-
plete with a costumed Grinch. Boy Scout Troop 127 created a winter scene float with a lighted tree, skating pond and a “bonfire.” Santa and Mrs. Claus are always a much-anticipated part of the parade as the last tractor in the lineup. “The parade’s Facebook page has more than 7,000 likes from 48 coun-

tries around the world,” Becker said. “We’re getting people from New Jersey and Pennsylvania traveling to Greenwich to see it.” Participating tractors have come from as far away as the Albany area. Space is limited to 70 tractors, with an entry fee of $20 each. Proceeds support a scholarship for a graduating Greenwich Central School senior who will be continuing his or her education in agriculture, as well as Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce activities. Spectators are encouraged to carpool or walk to view the parade. Parking will be prohibited along the parade route. To register a tractor, visit www. greenwichchamber.org or call 518692-7979. Greenwich Free Library In 1902, a small group of local women saw the need for a public library and launched a project for the establishment of the Greenwich Free Library. Today, the Greenwich Free Library not only provides free and open access to literature and information, but also technology, meeting spaces and cultural and educational experiences. “We get 5,000 people a month coming through our doors,” said director Annie Miller. “But there are still people who think we just have books.” A reading room provides quiet space for enjoying magazines, newspapers and books, the historic I.V.H. Gill Room offers the opportunity to research local history and genealogy and the Margaret & O.E.S. Hedbring Community Room provides a place for meetings, programs and events. A robust schedule serves a variety of age groups. For kids, the Pre-K Building Blocks programs teach skills and behaviors for school success. After School at the Library features a Lego Club, a new Teen Lounge for snacks, games and socializing and Fab Fridays with fascinating names like Elephant Toothpaste and Spaghetti Architects. For the visually impaired the library is equipped with a desktop video magnifier, large type and audio books, accessible e-books and RISE radio receivers for WMHT broadcasts. There are eight public access computers with high-speed internet and WiFi access for those with their own devices. To add to the success
of their programs and events, Miller said she’s always looking to attract new markets. “We are working to increase the library’s presence outside our walls by going to where potential patrons are, rather than waiting for them to come to us,” Miller said. “We’ll be taking part in more local events and encouraging collaborations with local groups.” Miller is excited about this year’s summer reading theme: Libraries Rock! “We’ll be organizing hands-on activities for kids and teens, such as making musical instruments, and we’ll be planning a Battle of the Bands,” she said. Renovations are also scheduled for the sum-

mer months, creating more meeting and classroom space in the basement and revamping the Gill Room. It’s a lot to manage, and it takes one full-time and seven part-time staff members and 75 volunteers to get it all done. “We have a wonderful board, incredible staff, great volunteers and excellent community support,” Miller said. “That makes all the difference.” The Greenwich Free Library is located at 148 Main St. in Greenwich. Chamber of Commerce Come join us! For over 28 years, the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce (GGCC) has been providing services to the business community and the general community of Southern Washington County. The GGCC was organized in April of 1990 as an outgrowth of a Village Downtown Greenwich business organization, and has since grown to nearly 200 members from Washington County, Saratoga County and the Capital District. By working to support, promote and attract business in our local area, the GGCC strives to improve the quality of life in our region and improve and enhance the local business economy. There are a number of benefits to being a member of the GGCC, some of which include 24/7 easy access to business information on our Member Directory page: http://www. greenwichchamber.org/directory.asp, and direct links to business websites. We also offer referrals to member businesses only and participate in many regional advertising programs to spread the word about the Greater Greenwich
area and its many offerings. The GGCC is also able to offer quality CDPHP health insurance plans to business groups with more than one person in the business. The support of our members and that of other area businesses allows the GGCC to provide a number of great community events which have become “classics” of Southern Washington County. Join us June 15 & 16 for the annual Whipple City Festival, now in its 26th year, and the Halloween Parade in October, and our annual Holiday Lighted Tractor Parade. Now in its 6th year, this event has surpassed every expectation in popularity, enjoyment and beauty, and has become a wonderful way to ring in the holiday season! This year the parade will be on Saturday, November 18, 2018. To learn more about the area or to become a member, call the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce office at (518) 692-7979 or visit our website at www.greenwichchamber.org.
DUMPSTERS FOR RENT 10 & 15 yard dumpsters available.
Editor’s note: While every effort has been made to provide a complete listing of the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce’s membership, readers can visit www.greenwichchamber.org to check for any updates.

Tour of the Battenkill Dirt roads. A covered bridge. 5,000 feet of elevation change. Every year, 3,000 cyclists from the U.S., Canada and Europe take up the challenge of one of America’s largest single-day road races – the Tour of the Battenkill. Now under new ownership, the 14th annual “Queen of the Classics” returns to Greenwich on April 28, offering a premier rider experience, including an all-inclusive post-race party with food and craft beer. The race begins and ends at the Washington County Fairgrounds with two events: the legendary 75-mile “Gran Fondo” and a new 40-mile “Medio Fondo.” The Gran Fondo begins at 9 a.m. and travels from the fairgrounds toward Easton, then on to Center Cambridge, Buskirk, and Cambridge. It continues north to Salem and West Hebron, then back through Cossayuna to return to the fairgrounds. The Medio Fondo starts at 8 a.m. and travels throughout the Greenwich-Easton-Cambridge areas. The loop course is unlike any other in the U.S. For participating cyclists, it’s a back-road journey through open farmland, narrow canopies of trees, and a covered bridge.
Tour of the Battenkill takes place in Greenwich in the Spring. “It’s the kind of naturally carfree, rural roads you wish you could ride every day,” organizers said. Battenkill’s numerous dirt sections are its trademark, and therein lies one of the special ingredients that have led to its popularity. There have been a lot of superlatives thrown around about the Tour of the Battenkill since its inception in 2004: “America’s biggest one-day road race,” “the toughest one-day road race in the country,” “the greatest number of flat tires at a cycling event…” The result is that everyone who finishes, even everyone who starts, goes home with rich stories to tell.
An awards ceremony will take place around 2 p.m. near the finish line at the fairgrounds. New for this year: A “rocking after-party” will celebrate all riders right at the fairgrounds with free food and a beer offered to participants. The cost to participate in the 2018 Tour of the Battenkill is $79 to $99 for Medio Fondo and $99 to $119 for Gran Fondo. Spectators are free. Parking for cyclists and spectators is free and will be adjacent to the start/finish line at the Washington County Fairgrounds, 392 Old Schuylerville Road, Greenwich. For information and registration, visit www.tourofthebattenkill.com or info@tourofthebattenkill.com.

Adirondack Wool & Arts Festival Washington County is a top producer of animal fiber with its own carding and spinning mill located right in Greenwich. The annual Adirondack Wool and Arts Festival at the Washington County Fairgrounds is a natural draw for fiber enthusiasts, attracting more than 3,000 visitors for two days of browsing, shopping and learning with friendly and informative vendors. The 2018 festival is scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 22-23. Gates open at 10 a.m. each day. “The festival is celebrating its tenth year,” said Ida Williams, Washington County Fair board of directors’ member. “Commemorative T-shirts will be sold throughout the weekend.” More than 100 vendors and exhibitors from New York, New England, Pennsylvania and beyond will showcase their products including fiber arts, raw fleece, roving, spinning supplies, needle felting, dyes and yarns. The event was formerly known as the Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival. The title was changed to represent additional artisans added to the festival including art, craft, body care products, healing arts, jewelry, culinary arts and craft beverage producers. “Argyle Brewery will be selling their craft beer and BarStream will be serving wine and wine slushees from a converted 1966 Airstream,” Williams said. Demonstrations and workshops throughout the two days will offer techniques, ideas and inspiration for all those who knit, crochet, and weave. Fleece and handspun skeins will be available for show and sale and a Fiber Arts Show will feature knitted, crocheted, felted and woven arts and garments. The Used Equipment Auction returns this year, featuring wheels, looms and other fiber equipment – perfect for those looking to upgrade or for those new to the craft. The live animals are always popu-

Sheepshearing and herding demonstrations provide a behind-the-scenes look at the work involved in the care and raising of these animals. “There will be more activities for children this year,” Williams said. “Pumpkin decorating, wagon rides and pony rides are all free - included in the price of admission.” Admission for the festival is $5;
