It is with great pleasure that we bring you your all-new 2018 Cambridge Valley Community Guide. This edition contains information on all aspects of living in the Cambridge Valley. From school news to church schedules, from community organizations to profiles of important local organizations, you will find this edition a treasure trove of valuable information. We would like to thank town, village and school officials for their assistance in compiling of the information contained on these pages. Also an extra special thanks to Sara Kelly of Sara Kelly Graphics & Design for providing us with the beautiful cover shot of Hubbard Hall. That picture is unique and was quite a challenge for Sara. She had to make sure there were no cars parked in front of the building and she spent countless hours using photoshop to remove all the power lines and other 'general interference.' The end result is a wonderful picture of a real Cambridge Valley treasure Hubbard Hall. We hope you enjoy this guide and find it useful...and keep it handy throughout the year --- right alongside your 2018 Southern Washington County Phone Book. John Manchester, Publisher

Cambridge Football

Cambridge: A football town By Keith Harrington When sports fans think of small-school high school football in this area, the first name that comes to mind is Cambridge. The Indians are the most dominant smallschool football program in Section II, maybe in the state. And it doesn't look like that’s going to change anytime soon. Football in the Washington County town is a community undertaking. Nearly everyone in Cambridge takes on a role, whether it be coaching at some level as many former players do, being a member of the booster club that helps raise funds for the program, or just coming out and supporting the team on game days. Cambridge is just a football town. And every year the goal never changes: Win a state championship. 'Yes, it’s part of our schedule we send out each year. The goal is always the same, it just doesn’t happen that often," Coach Doug Luke said. "When it does you cherish the moments and then look forward to the next year. There will always be a chance to look back and remember those times." Last November the Cambridge football team made history by defeating Maple Grove 26-14 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, their second straight New York State Class D title, thus becoming the first team in the modern championship era that began in 1993 to

claim back-to-back state championships. Cambridge has won an unprecedented 16 sectional titles, 10 in Class D and six in Class C. From 1995-2005 Cambridge played in 10 consecutive Section II finals. The Indians have played in six state championship games, winning in 1999, 2016 and 2017. The seeds of Cambridge's success were planted upon the arrival of Ken Baker as the head football coach in 1986. In the season prior to Baker taking over, the Indians went 1-7. In 1992 Baker coached the team to the Section II Class C title when the Indians stunned Watervliet 7-6. Watervliet entered the contest on a 36-game winning streak. "He taught not only the X’s and O’s, but more importantly gave the football team a sense of family,” Luke said. “He also taught responsibility. That everyone has to watch the back of their teammates, like a brother. "There were many difficult times during Coach Bakers’ first few years, but he taught that it took a lot of hard work and dedication to become part of a good team. It took a few years for the program to change and Cambridge football was changed forever." So what changed after Baker arrived? It was a Baker who implemented the Indians' Pee Wee football program. With a feeder program teaching kids the same sys-

The Pee Wee program starts players in kindergarten and they play in the same system until they graduate high school. Many of the plays that Baker put in are still being used. The future stars see their varsity heroes practicing and want to grow up to carry on the tradition. "The pee wee program had a great impact on the Cambridge football future.,” Luke said. “It was not because we now had youth programs, but because we had the right people running the program. We didn’t have parents of the players, we had men that were developing a program. They bought into the things that Coach Baker believed in, and also employed the same offense and defense. The youth program today, in my opinion, is still one of the best because of the coaches and the way the program is run."

Next the next football season rolls around, Cambridge will have won 25 of their last 26 games when practice begins and will once again set their sights on reaching the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. Several seniors will have graduated, but the goal of the Indians will remain the same. A third straight state championship would put Cambridge in unchartered territory when it comes to New York high school football. However, as Luke pointed out, it won't just be about his squad. "I believe it’s as important to the community as it is to the players and coaches," Luke said. "It (the 2017 state title) was a good feeling and it will be something that every player, coach and community member of Cambridge will be able to look back on and remember, the feelings of those special moments."

Cambridge Valley Farmers Market

Chamber helps move farmers market indoors for winter months The Cambridge Valley Chamber of Commerce launched a new initiative early this month for those who miss shopping at the Cambridge Valley Farmer's Market over the winter months. The Second Sundays Makers and Farmers Market will be held every second Sunday of the month from noon to 4 p.m. This new series will fill the gap until the regular Cambridge Valley Farmer’s Market begins their regular season in May. Shoppers will be able to stock up on meat, eggs and maple products as well as storage vegetables for hearty winter meals, such as potatoes, onions, beets, carrots and cabbage. Local artists and makers will also be included, offering unique handmade goods from pottery and jewelry to artwork and greeting cards. Different crafters and artists will be featured every month. “We will be building on the success of this Second Sundays Market so it will grow and also support local businesses along Main Street,” said Chamber board secretary Sara Davis. “We have several ideas in the works.” The first Second Sundays winter market was held at the Argyle Brewing Company's taproom at the

A selection of artisanal beers and ciders and nearby lunch options rounded out the experience and live music was provided by local musicians. “We had a great turnout!” said Lindsay Fisk, marketing manager for the summer Farmers Market and a vendor at both markets. Information and updates on the Second Sundays Makers and Farmers Market can be found on the Chamber of Commerce Facebook page or by contacting the chamber at 518-677-0887. The Cambridge Valley

Farmers Market, which runs from mid-May to the weekend before Christmas, is organized and run by a market committee and community volunteers. The market operates with the assistance of the Cambridge Valley Community Development and Preservation Partnership and Hubbard Hall Projects. The Farmers Market is held every Sunday throughout the season, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the green space at the corner of Main and Broad Streets. The market moves into the Lovejoy Building on Hubbard Hall’s

Most vendors are from Washington County, bringing fresh local produce, pasture-raised meats and eggs, artisan baked goods, wines, maple products, ready-to-eat food including wood-fired pizza, and unique handmade goods. Christmas in Cambridge

Plans for Cambridge Christmas 2018 are in the works Cambridge celebrates Christmas with a flurry of events throughout December that are guaranteed to get everyone into the holiday spirit. Plans for 2018 are still in the works, but this overview of Christmas happenings that have been organized in the past represents the events being considered for this year. To kick off the season, the Cambridge Valley Chamber of Commerce has encouraged all residents and businesses to “Deck the Halls” with the potential reward of winning a prize for the best holiday decorations. To get holiday shopping off to a start, the chamber has organized a Christmas Basket Raffle, with the entrants shopping locally from Black Friday to right before Christmas. The more each entrant shops locally the higher the odds are of winning. Two baskets were given away last year, filled with gifts and gift certificates from generous chamber members. The first weekend of December is the annual Christmas in Cambridge Weekend, now in its 21st year. The three-day holiday celebration begins on Friday night with the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Claus and the lighting of

On Saturday, there’s usually a Christmas Goodies Holiday Bazaar at the Cambridge United Presbyterian Church and a Christmas in Cambridge Craft Fair at the Cambridge Central School. Proceeds from the fair’s Chinese auction has benefitted Operation Santa Claus in Cambridge. The weekend closes on Sunday with the lighting

of the Eternal Illumination Memorial trees purchased through the Cambridge Lions Club and decorated in memory of a loved one. The Lighted Christmas Parade celebrated its second year in 2017 with floats, tractors, livestock, music and ugly sweaters. It was an event that was resurrected by Eric Mattson of Mattson Concrete, with the help of the chamber. The parade usually kicks off on East Main Street and travels west towards Broad Street, delighting young and old alike. An Ugly Sweater Contest is held after the parade with prizes awarded for best

family sweaters, best individual sweater and best pet sweater. Last year, the festivities continued at Argyle Brewery’s taproom at the Cambridge train depot with live music, artisanal beers and cider. “It’s been a huge success,” said Cambridge Valley Chamber President Teresa Conrad. “It will be even bigger this year!” For more information about the 2018 Christmas events, visit the Cambridge Valley Chamber of Commerce website at www. cambridgenychamber.com or visit their Facebook page.

Balloon Festival

18th Annual Cambridge Valley Balloon Festival Returns June 1-3 Hot air balloons float above the Cambridge Valley each June, making the weekend of the Cambridge Valley Balloon Festival such a spectacular event. The festival, now in its 18th year, will take place June 1 to 3, with food, music and community events adding to the fun. Organized by the Cambridge Valley Chamber of Commerce, the festival draws more than 5,000 visitors and features four launches of about a dozen hot air balloons throughout the weekend. It is exciting for both new and returning spectators to see these majestic balloons rise into the sky and float throughout the surrounding countryside. Rides are available and can be purchased directly from the pilots. Between the launches, the Cambridge community throws out the red carpet and provides a myriad of activities to entertain the crowds. “It’s a great family weekend and it’s all free,” said Balloon Festival chairperson Lisa Pembroke, who is also on the chamber’s board of directors. “Even the parking is free.” Friday night generally features a Block Party and Candlestick Glow on Main Street followed by a fire-

Pembroke said organizers hope to expand on last year’s Block Party event this year. On Saturday, a “Taste of Cambridge” showcases local food producers and restaurants. The “Taste” is followed by the annual Moon Glow, a spectacular evening display of tethered hot air balloons that are lit from inside in time to music. Local organizations augment the festival with activities including a craft fair, farmers’ market,

museum tour, and concerts. The Lions Club hosts a Car Show and The Cambridge Valley Flying Club offers a “Fly-In/ Aviation Day at Chapin Field. Sunday brings an end to the official festival activities with a Pilots Breakfast at the Cambridge American Legion on Route 22. This is a great opportunity to meet the pilots and discuss the details of ballooning with the experts. “Sponsors are crucial to the success of the balloon festival. They make it possible for the event to occur

free of charge,” said Pembroke. “We couldn’t do it without them!” Opportunities range from smaller donations to the sponsorship of an entire balloon, where sponsors get two free rides along with free tickets to pilot events. Sales of official Balloon Fest merchandise also help fund the event. For information on the Cambridge Valley Balloon Festival, or to become a sponsor, visit www.cambridgenychamber.com or call 518-677-0887.
