Fair Haven Concerned: Helping its neighbor Mother Teresa once said that she wanted people to be concerned about their neighbors. She then followed her statement with an urgent question, “Do you know your neighbor?” Fair Haven Concerned can answer that with a resounding “yes.” The organization, established in 1983 as part of the

There was a need for a place where people could get affordable clothing,” said Ashley Bride, executive director. Since opening its doors in February 2016, the shop has recirculated an estimated three tons of new and used clothing in western Rutland County, eastern Washington County of New York and beyond. The shop also serves another purpose that is often forgotten in the world the non-profit. “Second Chance Thrift Shop helps Fair Haven Concerned cover some of its operational expenses,” Bride said, a much-needed boost to the budget as grant money dwindles, leading those awarding non-profits to add a caveat to the check. able to anyone in Fair Haven or West Haven free of charge, regardless of social status, creed, race, age or any other difference. Throughout the year, Fair Haven concerned does various fundraisers and charitable events, so anyone who is interested in helping the organization can do so by participating in any of these events. The events are continually posted on the group’s Facebook page “Fair Haven Concerned, Inc.” Fair Haven Concerned also works with various organizations and businesses throughout the year to put on other community-oriented events. The organization recently teamed up with Shaw’s in which the grocer donated bags for The Second Chance Thrift Shop’s “fill a bag” event. Shoppers were invited to take a Shaw’s bag and fill it with items all for just $7, Bride said. Fair Haven Concerned will once again be teaming up with the American Legion in hosting an Easter event for families. Bride is hoping to top last year’s whopping 3,000 eggs that were hunted by the children. And when prom season comes around, the thrift shop is a place where teenage girls can find affordable gowns. Last year, the store also gave away gift certificates to local nail salons and hair dressers during prom season. “We really can’t thank all the community groups and businesses enough for all their help and support,” Bride said. For more information visit them at 73 Main St., call 802-265-3666, email fhci@comcast.net, visit www.fairhavenconcerned.info, or visit their Facebook page.

Fair Haven Summer Concerts in the Park Each summer, hundreds of music lovers travel to Village Green to enjoy the sweet sounds of the annual Fair Haven Summer Concert Series. Fred Capron, chairman, said 400-450 people from across the region bring their lawn chairs and blankets to the park to listen each Thursday night during the summer. “Sometimes we get 700,” he said. This year’s series runs from June 14 to Aug. 16. Starting at 7 p.m., area bands including Blue Jay Way, the Starline Rhythm Boys and Catamount Crossing perform hits from a variety of genres from Honky Tonk to Bluegrass and

Country to Rock & Roll. “It’s a pretty good mix,” Capron said. Capron said concertgoers are of all ages. “We see kids, moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas… people who enjoy good music,” he said. “It’s very kid-friendly,” Capron added. “We have a spot in the back of the park where the kids play.” This year, Burlington, Vermont-based Mellow Yellow kicks off the season with the first concert June 14. The Psychedelic Era Tribute Band will get attendees dancing and singing to music from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. “Once in a great while, there will be people dancing. And a lot of them sing along,”

Capron said. Added Capron: “It is a fun time. Everybody is happy. I enjoy watching the hands clapping and everyone enjoying themselves.” Irish band J P Murphy will cap off the season on Aug. 16. “We always close out the season with J P Murphy,” Capron said. “They get the kids involved…” The series started off featuring only eight concerts each year. Now, 10 take the stage on the gazeebo in the Village Green. Demand, Capron said, has grown the series. “We could do 15 and they would find a way to get there,” he said. There’s not just musical

fun to be had in the park. Hot dogs, popcorn and water are also sold. This year’s summer the concert series will feature five free ice cream nights: June 14, June 28, July 12, July 26 and Aug. 16. Tickets for a 50/50 drawing are also sold at each concert. Annually, $2,000 of the raffle proceeds are awarded as a scholarship to a graduating senior at Fair Haven Union High School who plans to study music. Another $1,000 is donated to Dodge House, which assists homeless veterans, in Rutland. The concert series is funded by the Town of Fair Haven. Historical Society brings town together Percy Bysshe Shelley, considered one of the epic poets of the 19th century who penned such works as “Ode to the West Wind” and “The Masque of Anarchy,” viewed history as a cyclic poem written by time upon the memories of man. Fair Haven has a poem not only written upon memories of its earliest residents, but has those memories lovingly preserved by the dedicated members of its historical society, whose mission on its page on the Fair Haven town website says it all: to bring together people interested in history and the Town of Fair Haven. The society, led by president Mary McNeil, houses an extensive collection of books, scrapbooks, magazines, photos, newspapers

and artifacts in its offices at the Fair Haven Municipal Building. There are also town records and genealogical files for those searching for information on long-lost relatives or to see where a dear great-great grandparent was born or buried. Or perhaps one is searching to see whether they are related to any of Fair Haven’s colorful characters, such as shop owner Nathan Durkee, who is mentioned in “A History of Fair Haven, Vermont” to have advertised in 1798 that he “has lately received, and is now selling, at his store in Fair Haven, at the corner opposite Brown’s Tavern, a small assortment of English and India goods, for cash, country produce or ashes.”

While preserving Fair Haven’s long and rich history – the town received its charter from the General Assembly of the state meeting in Manchester on Oct. 27, 1779 – the society is active in present historymaking events, participating in such events as the Spring Fling in May, Welcome Center Expo in June and Applefest in the fall. Each summer, the society co-sponsors Local History Day with the Fair Haven Farmers’ Market. They also have held annual teas for senior citizens and celebrate Charter Day in October. Board meetings are usually held on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and the society publishes a quarterly newsletter, “Slate of Historic

Events Past and Present.” Those interested in having a souvenir of Fair Haven’s history can stop at the society’s office and purchase books, postcards, notecards, mugs and sweatshirts. All proceeds support the work of the society. A campaign is currently under way to raise money to replace the wooden posts surrounding the Fair Haven Park with marble posts. For more information on the marble posts or how to become a member of the Fair Haven Historical Society, call 802-contact the Fair Haven Historical Society at 802-265-3010 or visit fhvthistory@gmail. com.

Spring Fling kicks off Memorial Day in Fair Haven The snows will have melted and been replaced with budding trees and sprouting grass as the region’s residents begin tilling the soil, planting vegetables and flower gardens. American flags also begin to appear with increasing frequency in front of homes and businesses reminding folks not only of Memorial Day but also that Spring Fling time in Fair Haven is upon them. Organized by the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, the 2018 Spring Fling will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 26 on the Fair Haven Town Green. The event is hosted concurrently with the Memorial Day parade. A perennial favorite with the community, Spring Fling has hosted up to 40 vendors in years past. The Chamber hopes that number grows this year. Offerings include carnival-type games, food vendors selling hamburgers, French fries, snow cones and more; arts and crafts vendors offering everything from handmade jewelry to wooden toys as well as others. There are also many local groups with tables, such as the Cub

Scouts and the Fair Haven Historical Society. To whet your appetites further, the Fair Haven Rotary traditionally hosts a chicken barbeque. Volunteers from the Chamber, which has about 45 members, begin setting up for Spring Fling early in the morning, with vendors showing up soon afterward to put the finishing touches on their displays. Throughout the day, hundreds of people swing by and wander through the Green, taking in the sights, buying a trinket or two, eat-

ing a delicious treat and, odds are, especially in a small, tight-knit community like Fair Haven, catching up with neighbors and friends. During the early afternoon, attention turns to the annual Memorial Day parade, organized by the local American Legion Post 49. The parade begins immediately after a ceremony honoring this nation’s veterans, which is held at the memorial at the intersection of Main and Washington Streets. The parade begins and ends here, usually starting

at 1:30 p.m. In past years, the parade has featured marchers from the local fire department and Little League teams. Old cars have also graced the parade route, ushering in the unofficial start of summer in Fair Haven style. For further information about Spring Fling, contact the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce at 802-265-8600 or check out their website at www.vtlakesregionchamber. org. Vendor registration forms can be found and downloaded at the site.

Carver Falls: A hidden gem Many locals may not believe it, but there is a 126foot waterfall right in their backyards. Carver Falls is on the Poultney River, along the Vermont-New York border. Water falls over the course of three drops. A dam is located at the top of the first fall so water there flows over a wide ledge and cascades beneath the penstock, then over the 30-foot high middle fall. After that fall, the river gathers in the plunge pool, before leaping over the final 65-foot drop into the pool below. In periods of very low water, the plunge pool seeps into the heavily fractured bedrock and rises at the base of the lowest drop – it will actually well up like a spring at the base of the totally dry cliffs of the lower fall. The gorge below the falls is almost as impressive as the falls themselves; the walls are so steep one can clearly see the river 100-feet below. Of interesting note, the falls are not in their original location. A deceitful land surveyor from New York deliberately surveyed the

land in such a way as to have the waterfall on his property. The surveyor was hoping to harness the power of the 126-feet high falls for his own lucrative ends – to power a mill. However, the victim of the scam didn’t take this decision sitting down. On his own property, the victim searched and searched, eventually finding a weak point in the river bank.

What does every resident in Fair Haven have in common?

Having found it, the man went to work with pick and shovel, creating a trench for the river to run into. After that, nature took care of the rest. The running water began to erode the man-made gap in the bank and eventually the rivulet became a torrent and the torrent became the new Poultney River, dropping over the ledge in the current location of Carver Falls.

To reach Carver Falls, drive west out of Fair Haven along West Street. The Poultney River coincides with the New York and Vermont border. Upon crossing the bridge spanning the river, turn right onto Manchester Road. After a couple miles, take another right onto Carver Falls Lane. Park at the dead end and you can find the start of the falls just below the dam.

They all receive a copy of the FreePress in their mailbox every Friday! Call 800-354-4232 to promote your business.

Fair Haven Classic Auto Car Show The classic car market is a hot one, with novices and connoisseurs alike making pilgrimages to metal meccas throughout the country. Luckily for car enthusiasts of the Green Mountain state, one such mecca of antique and classic metal can be found right in their backyard. For the past 13 years, the Vermont Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce has sponsored the Fair Haven Classic Auto Show the last Saturday in July. This year’s show, at Fair Haven’s Town Green, takes place on July 28 with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and judging commencing at 1 p.m. Kerry Fowler, Chamber of Commerce president, said those attending can expect to see more than 100 vehicles. “We’ve run anywhere from 90-130 vehicles,” Fowler

said. “It all depends on the weather.” Although a “classic auto show,” vintage cars are not the only thing on display. “We also have bikes, trucks, motor homes – anything they want to bring on wheels,” said Fowler, adding that exhibits in years past have included old HarleyDavidson motorcycles, Model T trucks, two-cycle Saab cars and more. “Everything under the sun,” he said. The event is free and open to all. In addition to cars, tractors and motorcycles, there will be live music to entertain visitors. Fowler said judging will be wrapped up in early afternoon after which the top 25 cars will be named, including who claimed the oh-socoveted Best in Show honor. While a Vermont event, Fowler said car enthusiasts from throughout the region

The Fair Haven Classic Car Show will return this year in July in the Park in Fair Haven. attend with some hailing as far north as Ticonderoga, New York and as far west as Saratoga Springs, New York. As people clear their endof-July schedules in anticipation of the auto show, Fowler is hoping the sun continue to shine as it has in

years past. “If it’s a nice day people want to go for a drive,” he said. “We’ve been fortunate these 13 years – usually the weather cooperates. For more information call Fowler at 802-345-0921.
