Arts Continued from front page The building will be 200 years old in 2022. “We’re applying for grants to purchase two cold-climate heat pumps so we can stay open during the winter months and become a year-round arts center,” Mook said. The pumps will also provide climate control during hot summers. Other renovations will include electrical upgrades, painting, stone work and more. Stone Valley Arts offers dance, art and music classes to children and adults in addition to concerts, open mic events and a full schedule of art exhibitions. “We’re very excited to have Erika Schmidt as the organization’s executive director,” Mook said. The building will re-open in April with an exhibition featuring photographers Chuck Helfer and Denise Letendre. Stone Valley Arts has come a long way since its humble beginnings on the third floor of the Journal Press Building. “The response of the community has been wonderful,” Mook said. “One of the attendees of Gary Schmidt’s performance of ‘Chopin’s Nocturnes’ just couldn’t believe a quality program such as this could happen in Poultney,” said Mook.
“Thanks to Stone Valley Arts, we’ll have even more.” “We had 50 people attend that concert,” said Mook, “and over 150 people came out on the hottest day of the year for our Summer Arts Party.” Stone Valley Arts offers something for all ages and all levels for people who want to be creative. Funding will also help support an expansion of performances as well as educational programs. “We are excited about what we’ve accomplished and what’s possible,” Mook said. “We have great volunteers and people step up when there’s work to be done. “It will only grow from here.” Stone Valley Arts at Fox Hill is located at 145 E. Dorset Library hosting art by Donna Wynbrandt The featured artist at the Dorset Public Library during the month of January will be Donna Wynbrandt. The public is invited to meet Wynbrandt at the opening reception on Saturday, Jan. 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served. All works are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the library. Wynbrandt, a native of Cambridge, New York, is a selftaught artist, who has showed at the prestigious Puck Building in Manhattan as far back as 1992. Since then, dozens of local venues in Washington County, New York have shown her work. Wynbrandt’s items are also sold in the Bennington Museum gift shop and she will
participate in their fundraiser this year. Will attendees of the Dorset Library connect to the abandonment of brushes and paint and take to this new graphic art made with bold black ink? About a dozen whimsical graphic art works reveal Donna’s movement into a new career phase. At least seven watercolors will highlight her watercolor delights. Please come for a look see and to add your voice to the conversation. The library’s hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Call 802-867-5774 for more information. The Dorset Public Library is located at 3331 Vermont Route 30 in Dorset.

Bands to battle for cash, title Jan. 12 By Krystle S. Morey Bands singers, dancers and more talented acts from across the region will compete in Granville next Saturday for a $500 cash prize – and the title of Battle of the Bands victor. This year’s battle marks a decade for the event, which is a fundraiser for the school’s Future Farmers of America group. Organizers expect it’s going to be a big one. “We usually can fill up the whole auditorium,” said Chris Rathbun, Granville FFA president. The curtain will rise at 7 p.m. on Jan. 12 in the Granville High School auditorium. The theme this year is “Internet sensations.” Viral YouTube, Facebook and Twitter videos, as well as popular music videos, are fair game. “Our main focus was on viral videos… getting back Michael Jackson and those kinds of artists,” Rathbun said, noting the acts could get quite “interesting.” Past themes have included
“Back to the Future” and “School of Rock.” Six bands and several student acts were preregistered last Friday, about two weeks before the show. Past events have attracted more than 20 acts including The Saints of Nowhere, Soaked in Bleach and Five Star. This year, talent old and new will take the stage, including nine-year-old musician Conner Mears with the Wolf Holler Classic Country Band. The Battle of the Bands event isn’t just about good fun and loud music. It a learning experience too. The students do all the planning, marketing, stage setup and more for the event. “We’re going to have a pretty cool laser show this year,” Rathbun said. The event is open to parents, students and any fans of music. “It’s a way to show them what we can do,” Rathbun said,

regarding why the battle is open to the community. Added Rathbun: “It’s a really fun event – to see local talent come in.” Advance tickets can be purchased from FFA members or in the main office for $10. Tickets can also be purchased at the door the night of the event for $15. Battle of the Bands T-shirts will be sold separately for $15. All funds will be used to help FFA students travel to conventions and competitions. The Granville FFA, which has about 60 members at the school, came up with the Battle of the Bands in 2006 when the local charter was brainstorming fundraising ideas. “It’s a great fundraiser,” Rathbun said.

Get messy at Family Art Night (and more) Are you willing to get messy with your kids? Then don some smocks or old clothes, and start the New Year with art. The Castleton Free Library is excited to announce the second event in its monthly series of multiage get-togethers: Family Art Night on Tuesday, Jan. 22 from 6-7:30 p.m. This is a free program for all ages, but children must be accompanied by a participating adult. Several projects are collaborative and require adult supervision/help for safety. Please sign up with approximate number of people and ages of kids attending so that there are enough materials. Email castletonfreelibrary@gmail.com; send a Facebook message to Castleton Free Library or call 802-468-5574 to leave a message. Enrollment will be limited by space so contact the library no later than Friday, Jan. 18 if possible. We’ll warm up with some fast group tempera murals
(to be displayed in the library) in the crazy style of artist Herve Tullet, as featured in his book, Art Workshops for Children. Then we’ll divide up to explore different media at stations, including fused fabric appliqué, weaving, origami, and other surprises. Some stations will feature quick independent explorations, while others will introduce techniques for longer projects to be completed at home. Librarian Jan Jones (an art educator) will organize, with creative family members helping to keep the evening flowing. For a more focused approach, we’re offering a free workshop in creating Art Maps for students in grades K-5 on Sat. Jan. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. In this geography/art mash-up, students will first review elements of mapmaking, and then begin pieces for possible submission to the 2019 Barbara Petchenik Children’s World Map Competition. We will pro-
vide all materials, including an assortment of media, and will show many examples of creative mapmaking. Pre-registration is not required. Be watching for upcoming information on another Intro to Dance series for 3-6 year olds beginning in late January, offered in partnership with the Castleton Rec Department. Follow Castleton Free Library in this paper every other week, and also on Facebook and Instagram for last-minute updates and photos. Finally (completely unrelated to the arts, because we want to be well rounded), a reminder that this is Friends of CFL Science Pub Sunday. Join your curious neighbors on Jan. 6 at 4 p.m. to hear Assistant Professor Gregory Engel of Castleton University discuss the question, “Why can some people safely use opioids or drink alcohol while others become quickly addicted?” Meet on the third floor of Lake Bomoseen Lodge.

appreciated tremendously. Similarly, leading up to the holiday season, a host of impressive community efforts were made to ensure that older Vermonters in our area were cared for during the holidays. WSYB Radio, The Salvation Army of Rutland, Rutland Regional Medical Center, Federated Church of Castleton, Hubbardton Forge, St. Peter’s Church of Rutland, BAYADA, At Home Senior Care, Second Congregational Church of Bennington, Zion Episcopal Church of Manchester and their various departments, employees, members, friends and families etc., among others, worked to deliver gifts and holiday cheer to clients of SVCOA.
For this we are so thankful. Additionally, we’d like to thank the hardworking, compassionate volunteers of our own Senior Companion program who have also played an integral role during the holidays in caring for elders in our region. On behalf of SVCOA management, staff, board of directors and those we serve, thanks to all of these great organizations and individuals, you’re generosity is valued by so many.
