For more than four decades, enormous advertisements displayed in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal affirmed a picturesque notion of everyday American life. The 18-foot-by-60-foot images depicted an idyllic nation: beautiful landscapes, holiday celebrations, world-changing historical events, family road trips, and patriotism. This exhibition examines the captivating advertisements, offering insight into America and the histories of advertising, photography and technology. Thirty-six reproduced images from the George Eastman Museum depict an idealized past for a new generation, and a welcome reintroduction for those who lived through the decades that helped shape photography. Winter Hike Green Mountain Club will host a Winter Hike on Buckner Preserve in West Haven, Vt., on Saturday, Jan. 19. Group will leave at 9:30 a.m. from Main Street Park, near the east end of the fire station off Center Street in Rutland, Vt., and depart at 10 a.m. from the Buckner Preserve in West Haven. Depending on snow, or its absence, this could be an easy hike, moderate snowshoe or a moderate cross-country ski tour. The group will go from the Old Galick Farm on easy grades about two miles north on recently brush-hogged farm lanes to a Lake Champlain overlook. They will then return either by the same route or one with a bit more of up and down. Newcomers and nonmembers welcome. Bring drinking water and a lunch. Moonlight Ski The Wilton Wildlife Preserve will present its annual Moonlight Ski and Snowshoe on Saturday, Jan. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Camp Saratoga at the Wilton Wildlife Preserve in Gansevoort. Luminaries will glow along 2.5 miles of groomed trails. Along the way participants will find fields and forests, warming bonfires and plenty of hot chocolate. There will be a bake sale of homemade goodies in the Winter Lodge The terrain is suitable for all levels and ages and includes a smaller one-mile loop. Snowshoes will be available on a first-come first-served
basis in the Winter Lodge off of Parking Lot 2. The rental fee is $5 per person for non-members. The event is free, but registration is required. Employment is temporary from February 11 to November 29, 2019 with pay rate of $12.19 per hour (subject to change as may be required by law). Hours: M-F 7:00 to 3:00 pm, Sat 7:00 to 12:00 noon with extra hours and shift work during busy periods. All required tools provided at no cost. For non-commuting workers, company provided housing is available. In-bound travel and subsistence expenses reimbursed upon completion of 50% of the contract period.
